  • In this episode, see the 928 in teardown mode and getting prepared for paint. The 928 has had the interior removed and all of the exterior trim and components removed so that the body work and sanding can be done. Hear an interview with 928 guru, Colin Jensan as he describes the teardown process. I also interview Steve Calvert who is going to do the body work and paint.
This series documents the restoration of my 1990 Porsche 928 s4. I first fell in love with the 928 when it was featured as the hero in Risky Business. The 928 was Porsche first water cooled V8. With its 32 valve 5 litre engine it had 316 bhp and was a true supercar, breaking the land speed record on the Utah Salt Flats at 172 mph in 1987. This series follows the process of mechanical, paint and body work, and interior restoration. It also looks at some of the unique features of the car and the history behind it.

    Very cool!
When I get my 928, it's going to get strippeddown immediately and any issues taken care of right then and there. With cars this old, so much more than you think will be wrong with it.

I think you have made the right decision, using people who know 928s is invaluable and will save you money because of the mistakes that can be made. Dont worry about the strip down it will go back together ok..... I think you have helped me make the decision to remove my side strips when i come to paint... always been a big dilemma.... great quality videos.. 👍 (1985 928 S2 Manual RoW)

Be patient. You are doing the right thing and Colin is THE guy to have on your side. I started tearing mine down 10/19..dropped it off at paint 9/20...picked it up 12/20...did all the tear down myself. All the bushings under the car have been replaced also along the way. Interior is out. (Dash etc). All glass and trim off. Doors off. Sunroof out. Hood off. Hatch off. Rubstrips deleted. Rear wiper deleted. Washer jets deleted. All jams painted. Rocker panels off....Im addressing all the little nit noid things as i go. Redoing seats, fixing small cracks in the dash, window motors refresh , switches...AC...etc etc. This snow ball gets really big really fast once you push it down the hill. Looking fwd to seeing your end result. 🍻

The 911 is the poor man's 928. Sorry - I gotta call balls and strikes. the 928 was European "Car" of the Year 1979. No other sports car including the 911 has ever won "Car" of the year. The 928 has won 2 production car land speed record at Bonneville (1986 and 2020) - the 911 has exactly won none. Even 911 enthusiast Magnus Walker has started his 928 collection - its Now or Never for the 928 still the biggest Bang for the Buck in classic Porsches. Singer/RWB/RUF could easily reimagine 928s - its just a matter of time before someone specializes in customizing and outlawing 928s - There is no substitute.
