Serial January 2025 uh we’re going to look at the photos from last month either that I took or edited and we’re immediately going to start with film. That’s with a camera which is the RA 35 AF, a fixed lens 35mm f/2.8 autofocus camera that’s pretty new. It came out a few months ago, and I’ve been testing it in different situations to get a feel for it. Here I used Kodak ColorPlus 200, a non-expired film.
The first two photos were taken in Geneva, Switzerland. You can see that the lens has some particular characteristics, maybe not super sharp, but still quite decent. The geometry looks good, and autofocus seems reliable. I plan to do a full review of the RA 35 AF soon, but I need to shoot a few more rolls first.
When I test a camera, I just try out different things without necessarily aiming for an artistic project. I don’t even know if the film will come out okay sometimes. Here, for example, I made a classic mistake-I didn’t attach the film properly to the take-up spool, so I ended up with some unintentional double exposures. But one of them turned out pretty cool, showing a layered view of Geneva Bay.
Moving to digital, I used a Leica M240, a rangefinder camera, with the Jupiter-8, a Soviet-era 50mm f/2.0 lens I’ve had for years. I took some New Year’s Eve photos, including a bonfire in Reykjavik. The lens is good for this kind of shot, not super fast but still capable. The fireworks came out interesting too. You can see how the high-contrast bursts appear in the corners-they almost look like birds.
Next, I switched to the Leica SL2, a modern camera, and used the 7Artisan 35mm f/5.6 lens. It’s very compact, has a built-in lens cap, and only one aperture setting. These shots were taken in Manchester, capturing a nighttime street scene and a birthday party setup inside a bar. The lighting and ambiance worked well with this setup.
Back to film, I loaded the RA 35 AF with Ilford Delta 3200, a high-sensitivity black-and-white film. I’ve always preferred Kodak T-Max, but I’m starting to appreciate Delta 3200 more. The film performed well in Manchester, capturing a canal at night and the interior of a bar. I did mess up some long exposures, though, with some camera shake and possible double exposures. One of them has this chaotic mix of dartboards, beer glasses, and lights.
A few more controlled shots show Manchester’s streets at night. This roll turned out to be one of the most interesting ones I’ve shot with the RA 35 AF so far. There’s a building in Manchester, a couple having dinner in an old restaurant, and a long-exposure bonfire shot. The last few images were taken in Reykjavik, where I experimented with flash in the snow. The snowflakes didn’t render as round, which I’ll look into further.
For nightlife shots, I captured DJ Aluna performing at Kaffibarinn, a well-known Reykjavik venue. The high ISO film worked well for the low-light conditions. Another image shows a cocktail bar downtown, where the film did a good job with exposure.
Finally, the last two images are from Geneva. One is a cropped frame from the Old Town, and the other is of two runners in La Jonction, near the Arve and Rhône rivers. Even casual shots can capture something interesting about a place.
That’s it for the first part of this month’s photos. The second part should be out next week or the week after. If you have any questions or comments, let me know. Hope you enjoyed it-see you next time!
