One of the most heart wrenching parts about the Sewol ferry to me was hearing about the young school couple. They tied a singular life jacket together because some part of them knew they were going to die and others reported that they said they wanted to be together in the afterlife. They had to take their bodies apart to bring them to the surface, and the rescuer who found them cried thinking about the fact that they felt so desperate to stay together.

Just wanna mention that Kyle had been told his grandfather was critically ill, airport security held him up to the point of missing his flight, he begged them and told them to let him catch the flight but they refused, which triggered his manic episode for which he hadn’t had in years. Not to mention his dog that helped him through his bipolar disorder dying not long before along with another relative. It’s truly a sad story, and eye opening to how the mentally ill struggle and what can happen if they don’t receive help, empathy and aid.

    • @jenx5870
      @jenx5870 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +16

As an RN who is state certified to teach classes on mental illness and developmental disabilities, as well as someone who has Bipolar II, I don't believe it was a Manic episode being triggered. That isn't how mania works. When triggered, it still takes weeks or months for most people to have an actual episode, unless they are a rapid cycler (having four or more episodes of mania per year), in which case, it could take hours or days for the manic episode to occur. By your statement, he hadn't had one in years, thus he wasn't a rapid cycler, and in any case, once triggered, episodes don't begin immediately. They stated he required treatment with Narcan at the scene, so they must have suspected an intoxicant. They were unsuccessful, so I am guessing he probably used a stimulant, rather than a narcotic. It's just a theory. Narcan only works on opioids. Meth and other stimulant type drugs would also explain his behavior. Of course, that makes it no less sad, and it doesn't take away his Bipolar diagnosis or the need for mental health awareness. It would just be odd that his family would have let him go off on his own to the airport if they had noticed manic behaviors hours earlier, which they would have done with a true manic trigger. After all, the stress began when his dog died, then he was told that his grandfather was ill. Those are the triggering events for people with Bipolar I. Add lack of sleep or drug and alcohol use, and he would have shown symptoms much sooner than that night.

24:00 this was so hurtful because the message was telling people to stay put while the captain and assistants already de-boarded. The SK govt denied help from US NAVY DIVE AND RECOVER FORCES (which happened to be passing nearby) because they thought it would make SK look weak. Parents heard of the news, and went to where the ferry had sank. The SK coast guard (or equivalent) did not make any attempts to rescue those that were stuck. They kept boating around the wreckage and ever did anything more. This year BTS released Spring Day which chorus is basically "I miss you, I miss you" and it is still likely charting as the song holds deep emotional ties for the ferry tragedy.

for the sewol tragedy, the message that everyone heard was telling them to stay on board and that whatever was happening would be fine. while it was playing, the captain and some other adults had already gotten off the ferry. the reason the kids stayed is because the adults who were supposed to protect and watch them were saying that they’d be okay, and they trusted that they would be. in the video you can hear that, as time goes on, the kids realized they were actually sinking, but couldn’t do much by that point. there were even two students who tied themselves together so they wouldn’t drift apart after they died, because they knew they wouldn’t make it. that’s why it was such a tragedy, it should’ve been something that had little to no casualties, but the captain was selfish enough to let hundreds of children die because he wanted to live. sk has a day of remembrance on every anniversary. it never should have happened, but i’m glad they (sk) don’t let it be forgotten, and i hope all 304 people who passed are living happily wherever they may be
and as another comment says, today (April 16) is the 10th anniversary of the tragedy. research the incident if you can, and let the victims stories live further than they had, it’s only right to allow the tragedy to prevent another

US navy ships in the area were even offering to help, but it was denied. The parents and local boaters showed up and were denied access to the waters until it was far too late. It's something that always brings me to tears, those kids, most of the crew, and the other passengers were failed completely by the current SK government at the time in order to save face. The mother releasing the video of the two boys in the car is a good thing. It made me think about when I was 17 a good friend of mine was killed in a snowmobile accident. Her boyfriend was driving and they were going over am old railroad trestle (bridge) The were both drunk (it was Super Bowl Sunday and they had left a party.) He drove off of the bridge and they hit a concrete wall and then, she was run over. Her mother decided to have an open casket. Becky's head was pretty much smashed in and there was not much left of her face. Her mother chose to do this to show what drinking and driving can do. Becky looked horrible but, it really did help a lot of kids realize that drinking and driving was not a good thing.

Not to mention that there was a slight amount of families and other pedestrians on the boat besides the students (mothers, fathers, CHILDREN) as well as the teachers of these students. 2. Confess to Jesus that you are a sinner and ask forgiveness for your sins and Turn away from your sins. If you sin again after asking forgiveness of that sin, ask forgiveness again and try not to do it ever again. Jesus will forgive you!

One day, while driving up north with a friend of theirs, a deer jumped out in front of them and they struck it head-on. My grandma, who had been dozing off while hugging my grandpa from behind, went flying off the motorcycle and onto the road, while grandpa flipped off and tumbled, tearing his leg to pieces. He ended up needing plates and screws to hold his leg together; meanwhile grandma was (surprisingly) mostly unscathed, possibly due to her body being limp from her sleeping when she hit the ground. Aviation geek here. I thought it'd be worth pointing out that the age of an airplane in itself isn't a determining factor for how safe that airplane is. For example, Yeti Airlines has an average fleet age of ~15 years, but United Airlines has an average fleet age of ~16 years. Obviously, United has a *far* better modern safety record than Yeti. Now, here's the main difference. If an airplane is properly maintained, it can last a VERY long time (there are Douglas DC-3's from WWII that are still flying today). The US and other western countries have EXTREMELY strict maintenance procedures that every aircraft must undergo - and these procedures are even more strict for aging aircraft. These procedures and guidelines are not in place in many third-world countries, so crashes due to mechanical failures are more common with aging aircraft.

The Waverly flood was no joke. It was an unfortunate series of events where so much rain water rush in and destroyed buildings and homes. There was so much trash and debris that was thrown all over the place and it severely damaged the rail lines. It took months for clean up and the rail lines to be repaired, but till this day, there is significant damage left behind with visible scars left on the building fortunate enough to weather the storm. Ontop of that, the valley got hit massively with the flash floods, destroying a lot of the side/service roads with fallen trees or just washing away chunks of road entirely.

i do want to say as a boat enthusiast that leaning, especially in large ships, is super commonplace and usually is easily fixable with trim tabs, ballast water, and reshuffling weight. If i remember correctly this area has a lot of ferry travel so especially assuming these kids were used to a leaning boat I truly dont blame those students for not taking it seriously and wanting to take advantage of the situation. Ive been in much smaller boats that took on water and we were all making titanic jokes and running around grabbing stuff, too. But that was likely also why they were told to hold in place - the captain probably meant "literally stay wherever you are right now and dont move" and they took it as "stay in your cabins". At a certain point a list is unrecoverable and with them knowing they were overloaded they should've just evacuated immediately especially with children on board. all of those lives lost because of greed :/

@@shosc16 As person who's ridden on motorcycles for a really long time (they are a form of public transportation in my country)
I kinda agree with both of you
Yes, you're fully exposed in case of an accident and yes motorcycles are more dangerous than cars in certain situations, but not everyone who rides one is irresponsible
You can have irresponsible drivers as well as irresponsible riders and in most countries, there's this weird stigma about motorcycles being death machines when in actual cases, the infrastructure of the cities and towns in that country are built without consideration of cyclists (yes, both motorcycles and bicycles) which does tend to create that stigma
Now, I'm not trying to change your mind or anything, I'm just trying to help you understand where the other person is coming from

23:57 If you'd also like to know, one of the civilian divers that was searching for the lost bodies of the students commited suicide 2 years later after the tragedy happened because of suffering from trauma. His name was Kim Gwan-Hong (1973 - 2016). Rest in peace to him, and all the people that died in the tragedy. 🕊

Great advice about the motorcycles Tuv. I myself have been riding since I was 7 years old, mostly dirt bikes. They're amazing but dangerous so yes always wear ALL proper safety gear and if you want you race or challenge your skill on your bike do it on a track.

18:07 OK, IF ANYONE SEES THIS PLEASE SPREAD THIS WHENEVER YOU SEE SOMEONE TALKING ABOUT THIS. Trauma can have different effects on people, that includes complete apathy towards the situation, whether he was apathetic or not, I am not sure, but trauma can easily make it seem like the person dint care, they did, but as a defense mechanism the mind instead of letting the person go insane, just basically "deletes" any emotional connection to the situation.

Ive been riding motorcycles for 17 years. The Reddit comment could not be more accurate. You will crash. Eventually. It might be minor, might be major, but you will crash. A lot of the 18-25 year old crowd getting their first motorcycles make the same mistake. They get sport bikes that are significantly faster than they can actually control. They build false confidence and feel like they’re invincible. And then they crash. And when you think you’re invincible you ride faster, more aggressive, more risky.

As a motorbike rider I can say that you can be as safe as possible wearing all your gear, driving to the limit etc. However none of that matters when car drivers never see us. The amount of times I've almost been killed because a driver in a car didn't see me is amazing. Btw my bike is bright orange and very visible
