Ive always loved the smoothness of that sax at the beginning. Saxophone in an orchestra is so underrated. Shostakovich is a master at integrating saxophone to his orchestra and it's what gives a special vibe to the piece.
Actually, Shostakovich just wrote the melody for a movie in the 50s. This arrangement (the Suite for Variety Orchestra), including the use of saxophones, was done by Leon Atovmyan, not Shostakovich himself.
Nah, I would give that distinction to Brahms Waltz in A-flat major (op. 39 no. 15); I do really enjoy this piece though (and I love Shastakovich's fugues).

Super beautiful and monumental performance of the classic 2nd Walz of Dmitrij Schostakovich from The Ballet Anna Karenina of Alieksiej Tołstoj libretto. Best greetings to All the performers.
I think you're wrong. I have never heard about Shostakovich's ballet "Anna Karenina" (Rodion Schedrin wrote one I think). This piece is from Shostakovich's jazz suite no.2 and Tolstoy wrote the book, not the libretto
Shostakovich is a brilliant representative of the fine, generously gifted section of the Russian intelligentsia. Deep gratitude to the Lord, for every perfect gift comes from Him!

Me encantó esa entrada con el sax y demás instrumentos de aliento. Muy bella interpretación. Muchas felicidades músicos y director. Saludos cordiales desde México 🇲🇽.
This is art. All the people gathered together to witness and celebrate this spectacle. A feat of mankind to create these instruments and do certain things to them that makes them sound pretty. And then for a genius artistic mind to come along and put ink on paper that translates into commands on what to do to that piece of wood or brass. Almost poetic.
