We certainly have come a long, long way since the early 70s. I remember when my mum used to make tacos, pizza, lasagna etc she had to go to the delicatessen to get the ingredients. I would suggest that the UK today is one of the best places to eat in the world for the sheer abundance of foods and ingredients available.
Having lived in Argentina for many years I can say with certainty it is like England was in the 60s and all the worse for that.

You can do many things really quickly with a bit of puff pastry. :)
I love listening to Mary Berry recipes. Reminds of cooking at my primary school almost 50 years ago! Great memories in the 1970's.
The irony of her talking about using pre-made pastry when she's gone on to judge Bake Off etc.
The other woman is Judith Chalmers. And Mary is very much active today, i.e. The Great British Bake Off.
There is an interesting change in terms or connotations presented here. Something which today may be considered to be an inferior product in quality due to it being mass produced, frozen, and store bought is instead very charmingly referred to as "professionally made."
Yet people today would rather die than cook.
Many mass produced items are still of good quality. Nothing wrong with using pre-made pastry, it might not be as good as a skilled pastry maker doing it at home but it's good enough for everyday home use.
Absolutely nothing wrong with shop bought puff pastry. I always make shortcrust myself, but unless you have no life ain't nobody hot time to be pissing about with making puff pastry.
How we have changed as a society. To-day we are no longer a society but individual self-interest reigns supreme.
It was designed to be that way a hundred years ago. It has not happened by accident or by the people themselves, it has come out of various institutions like the Frankfurt School. When people collectivise they pose a threat to the establishment, and so atomising people with individualism and materialism makes us weak as a group and easy to control and manipulate. Multi-culturalism has also been used as a tool to divide everyone and prevent them coming together. The elites are not stupid, they know how to organise things to work in their favour.
Yeah,you can thank that vile person Thatcher, for that.
Her hands have always looked a bit painful.
She contracted polio as a kid, and spent 3 months in hospital as a consequence. Her whole left arm and hand was affected.

I love Mary Berry and her cooking but British cuisine in the 1970s always looks awful. No matter the recipe, the food looks so distressed to be there that the ingredients would rather climb back into their packaging than be eaten.
God yes, my mum used to scout out health food shops to get better ingredients and her mother used to think she was deeply eccentric!
The ingredients I remember being used in the 1970s here in England, were FAR superior in quality than what we have today. The animals and crops were far better fed and reared back then on the whole, although there were some dubious practices with spraying too just as in 2024. You only get out what you put in, and back then we put more in to our farming. These days there is too much freezing of meat before it even gets to the shops, to be sold as "fresh". Too much dodgy processing methods etc. The homemade meals I had as a child in the 1970s were more natural, with more flavour and texture with more of the personal touch from mum. I really miss the 70s and 80s for food.
@@EgoShredder the point I was making was not so much about the ingredients themselves or the quality of them. It was what was done to them in ‘crimes against cuisine’ that was the problem.
I do love a good vintage segment
She was always second rate and even back when these were being recorded we used to watch them and think my God what a load of old slop. Saving Grace with her comeback that she’s now a sweet old lady apparently that looks good on TV when really she’s a nasty piece of work
