Amps aside, that clean tone track is hauntingly beautiful! Had to replay that a couple times over! Is there a full track release, or was that just the snippit made for the video?
Awesome vid! I got a VH4 last year-amazing amp, but quite tricky to set up! The deep knob can really change the sound. The VH4 is definitely the amp with the most definition that I've played. I also really like channels 2 and 4 a lot. Cheers!
G'day from Australia, Love all the videos you do. I would love to see a you do a feature on the Herbert MKIII or a shootout with it. Awesome informative info you provide greatly appreciated.
Awesome! I'm not necessarily interested in the amps but your playing and mixing/production are outstanding. The nuance and finesse in your playing and tone really impressed me. Keep up the great work!
I had to sell my vh4 kt77 couse i needed the money only used it on engl 4x12 and i had the best umpf/bark as is in this video. Il get another one, one day. I love the cleans on the vh2 you have there, but il go vh4 all day, its my thing. Great video man and loved the riffs. 🤘🤘🤘
Would love a VH4 vs. Mark V 90w video, similar to an old one you did with the Mark V:25! Not only old-school Metallica this time, but also Modern Metal/Baritone/7-string styles.
one of your best!thay sound amazing,i love the vh4 much more...the vh2 sound more modern closer to the engl sound...combine the sound of the vh4 with the engl fireball 100 or savage 120 it will be almost perfect😁
I struggled to hear the difference in the clean tones with the left/right double track. For the rest of the channels, I was thinking the mids on the VH2 were more lower mids than where the VH4's mids lived. I could also hear that as being more scooped. You said what I was thinking though, the upper mids of the VH4 reminded me of Marshall. Both sound fantastic but I'd go with a VH4 as I prefer the aggressive mids.
In the mix I preferred VH4 distorted channel, it somehow filled up its frequency space better (the "right mids" were there in VH4). Clean channels had miniscule difference maybe with a bit of EQ moves would make them more like the same. Now I'm going to hunt VH4 NAM profiles :D.
At this point, I think the VH4 may be my desert island amp. I still love my ENGL Fireball 100 40th Anniversary Edition half stack, though... easily one of the best metal amps out there.
Great video as always John. I didn't catch if you mentioned the difference in the power section. From what I hear, the difference mostly sounds like Diezel accommodating for a different power section. What's your take on it? For a wild guess VH2 sounds a bi more KT77ish while VH4 sounds EL34ish, but I might be totally wrong.
I'm not sure how true this is, but I remember reading the VH2 is a rebadged Lil' Fokker with a different transformer. Probably another reason why they aren't 100% similar. Overall the VH2 sounded more relaxed in the mids and overall more scooped, while the VH4 is more compressed but is a midrange sledgehammer. I'm surprised at how tight you got them to sound in the metal demo, too.
the VH4 is my desert island amp. I used to never love it in demo's, then i actually played one and i have never left it since. Cleans seem a bit more compressed on the VH2 and scooped, which is nice, as the VH4 really has a super dynamic fender Twin like clean, which can sometimes be inconvenient. I like the VH2 here For the classic rock tone the VH4 sounded less held back than the VH2 to me, liked the VH4 more. The punch i expect from my VH4 is there. For rock as well, the VH4 i just prefer it, lik eyou said, just wilder. So fun. The VH2 sounds safer. Both great amps though! But .... the VH4 is my baby. The midrange, he roar, the punch, it's just unmatched.
I have a Herbert, I don’t know if you have one. I would like how you would set a herbert in a video to test it at your taste. I did it with prs mt15 and your setting works very good for me and helped me a lot to get a very good tone with my mt15. I know, hands, guitar, pickups, but it worked for me your setting. 🤗
The vh4 doesn’t sound like it hit you in the balls the way the vh2 does but it sounds better in the mix. My best description of what I heard is it is like the Aston Martin db9 vs the dbs. It’s a like jeremy clarkson said. It should have been called a db9s because the vh4 is the vh2 but with everything slightly better. What stood out to me is a well refined band of eq where it sounds less pronounced but that make it sound “just right”. Guitar players generally create a sound that is too much for a mix and although it’s fun to play with it is just generally never the tone you hear on an album with major notary. The vh4 was just enough that it made you want to scratch for more but didn’t lack to where you needed more.
VH2 clean has a little more presence. Subtle, but noticeable. VH4 somehow sounds a little "muted" by comparison, but I wouldn't have noticed on its own. Similar for the crunch, but in this case the VH2 is a little ear-piercing and thin. The amount of gain on the "rock" sample fills up the low end, and in this case the VH2 is tighter, and (pleasantly) more aggressive. Final tone, more of the same as the last. The interesting thing is, because you downtuned to C, it sounds basically identical to James Hetfield's St Anger tone 😅
Maybe its just me, but something about the gain channels on the VH-2 sound a little more "boxed in" vs the VH-4. The VH-4 sounds more feral and untamed, where as the VH-2 sounds slightly more contained. That's one thing I took away from these comparisons!
Why are the clean channels always demoed first, and the high gain channels are last? It seems like it should be the opposite to me, less fast forwarding.
No mean to offend, I really enjoy some of your videos, but I found this comparison the meaning of "cork sniffing"... I just listened to two almost identical amps. Even two different VH2 or two different VH4 may have 5% differences in tone, so I found this pretty unnecessary...Sorry, just my opinion...
@ I will listen again tonight in my studio headphones to be 100% fair. Don’t get me wrong, I really enjoy your videos, if I am mistaken I will come back correct myself…
@billtrip77 in any case, I can hear pretty significant differences but if others can't, that's totally fine and if the takeaway is that "they sound similar" that's fine too
@billtrip77 This is for someone who wants the tone and wants to know if the VH2 has the same VH4 tone, I've had the VH4 but didn't get a VH2 cause I worried it wouldn't sound the same. So it's a great video, in my opinion. Plus to hear him dial and play them is great also and a big reason I watch!

Finally got your VH4!
I love your videos man! So glad to see you comparing these two. I got a VH4 last year and couldn't be happier with it.
Amps aside, that clean tone track is hauntingly beautiful! Had to replay that a couple times over! Is there a full track release, or was that just the snippit made for the video?
Vh4 sounds great. Please make a tonex pack of it! You have some of my favorite sounds on tonex
Been waiting this demo for so long! 😊

I just bought my VH4 a week ago!!! I love it!!

Man those tones. I think I need a VH4 now. Would love to hear more from that amp. Maybe some extended range or thrash riffs. :)
Awesome! I'm not necessarily interested in the amps but your playing and mixing/production are outstanding. The nuance and finesse in your playing and tone really impressed me.
Keep up the great work!
Thank you!
Your programs are usually clean and efficient
Love my VH4 but I use the VHX WAY more as the cleans are sick, fx are amazing and it sounds near close to my VH4.
Now do the vh4-2 pedal vs. the vh4 amp
Great video waiting for the VH 4 mini tube.To come out
Dude your music is awesome!
Thank you!
Sounds sick as usual John! It would be kind of you to share all the settings of the AmpCentral, mostly level knobs settings. Thanks!
I used it as a passive loadbox, so not settings
That bass on the vh4 is nice too because it’s as if the eq is really creating a vacuum to pull out the lower hz’s like that of a piano or bass.
I really need one of those Red Seven reactive load boxes. Everything sounds great with them.
My one note is these are NOT affordable 😂😭 otherwise I love the tones and kickass video!
Would love a VH4 vs. Mark V 90w video, similar to an old one you did with the Mark V:25! Not only old-school Metallica this time, but also Modern Metal/Baritone/7-string styles.

🔥 They both sound good
VH2's extra treble clashes with the cymbals constantly whereas the VH4 sits so much better in the mix.

I would like to hear the vh4 vs the 2c + reissue.
At this point, I think the VH4 may be my desert island amp.

Vh4 all day to my ears

Not sure but fwiw, they both have EL34
I prefer the VH4 as well
Great, now I'm shopping for a VH2!!! T_T
You won't regret it
vh 2 distortion is a little Herbertized jejeje more HI-FI. Both are amazing. Clean tone of vh2 is insane.
Id like to see your engl collection vs diezel vh2 and vh4. The "german titans battle".
I'm not sure how true this is, but I remember reading the VH2 is a rebadged Lil' Fokker with a different transformer. Probably another reason why they aren't 100% similar.

You write that clean thing in 6/4 just for this? Very nice
🧶 🐈⬛ **the cat twiddling the yarn as the knobs of the amp change**
VH4 & Quad cortex comparison video ?

I prefer the VH4. The VH2 sounds great but the 4 has that "thud".
And the "crack"!

Not all VH4’s are equal. I prefer the 2007 or earlier VH4 models. Every comparison I’ve heard has the earlier models beating the newer ones
A VH3 would be amazing. Probably sounds dumb but...
vh4 for sure, the vh2 is great , but the vh4 has that tone
Howa then john , whats your secret? How do you afford so much awesome gear ? I do alright but theres no way i could keep up with you 😅.
i have got the diezel vh 2 and de channel 2 is blend channel 2 en 3 from de diezel vh4 not 3 and 4.
That's not what they say in their official video
Why are the clean channels always demoed first, and the high gain channels are last? It seems like it should be the opposite to me, less fast forwarding.
I start at channel 1 and work my way to channel 4 :)
@@SonicDriveStudio a lot of amps label channels clean crunch lead. I guess youtubers do those alphabetically.
Man, under gain, they were like 99% the same, the difference was negligible. Clean you could actually hear more of a diff.
vh4 ltlbt better
All your amps sound the same jk bro 😂
🤣
Cleans on vh2 better imo. Vh4 kills with having the ch3 and ch4
The cleans on the VH2 definitely are special
No mean to offend, I really enjoy some of your videos, but I found this comparison the meaning of "cork sniffing"... I just listened to two almost identical amps. Even two different VH2 or two different VH4 may have 5% differences in tone, so I found this pretty unnecessary...Sorry, just my opinion...
May I ask what you are listening on?

The "thru" output jack in front of the amp is not very convenient (prone to mistakes), I would have put it on the back of the chassis...
