This serves several purposes. It maximizes leverage, the pinky being the lowest point of contact on the bottom hand while the upper hand and wrist acts as a pivot point. Also, you can't really squeeze the hilt of a sword with all five fingers very hard and still maintain anywhere near the range of motion or fluidity as if you hold it this way, mostly because you can't really move your wrist around very much while squeezing hard. (this really only refers to slashing style, two-handed blades though) Make a really tight fist and move your wrist around. Now, just make a snug fist, but squeeze really hard with your pinkie and move your wrist around... See?
Pinky power is extremely important. I learned this as a young teen from looking at my hands and just training the weakest point. For 20 years I've trained my pinky. It's a great skill that skyrockets grip force 👌
This is also probably why firearm triggers are only actuated by the index or at most both the index and middle finger. Because using the little finger to do so will sacrifice heavily the grip and thus handling of the weapon in your hands.
Adam as a beginner you have really inspired me to push myself and constantly bringing out new information on how to improve your mind and body. Your channel honestly has improved my life thank you so much!
You have just confirmed my intuition on my golfer's elbow from calisthenics. I promise I had come to the conclusion I need to stregthen the little finger, I feel it attaches directly to the elbow where it hurts. I only found your channel recently, your contents are just great, one step ahead any other on TH-cam !
I study japanese sword, and yes the little fingers (and ring fingers as well) play a fundamental role in wielding the sword. I saw your video about balistic-isometrics last time, and now I'm training my grip strength using mostly that method. It's very intense, but I feel that it's altready improving my grip strength. Many thanks! 😊😊
Excellent tip, thanks. Good to know about these details on human physiology. For me this relates to comparing the Karate punch to Wing Chun which uses the lower knuckles and feels stronger, in my experience anyway.
I think some cool areas you could touch on where there is a lot to work with is: • Jason Bourne's Situational Awareness. In the movie, he was able to learn the license plates of the 6 cars in the parking lot and that the waitress was left-handed among other things by noticing without obviously paying attention. While this isn't normally done this way, being able to analyze your surroundings would be something a peak human, both physically and mentally, would need. • Tom Cruises' underwater breathing regimen for Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation. He was able to hold his breath for over 6 minutes with a routine he was using. This would be beneficial not only cardiovascular endurance, but being able to hold your breath for a long time underwater would prove useful any peak human in the event of a water torturing method.
String players can benefit from engaging the pinkies of both hands. This is more convenient on bowed strings, since the pinky already does a lot of work pushing down on the stick to leverage weight away from the strings as the hand and arm approach the instrument. But the biggest group of musicians to get the most drastic improvement are guitarists. Many guitarists let their pinkies fly far away from the fretboard, and neglect to train the pinky. A warmup in which the pinky is made to perform 50% of the stops while staying aligned with the strings can develop strength that also improves the performance and alignment of the rest of the hand. The other hand benefits from finger strums without guitar picks, with extra time given to the pinky. Players of electric guitars, steel string acoustics, and classical guitars benefit from doing a few pinky-involved Flamenco strumming exercises on a regular basis. The speed and strength developed make sound production bigger, and the increase in precision deepens the range of expression.
Thanks Adam , I always watch ur vid on flow States and I really am Motivated to train hard but can u pls tell me some exercises to dodge ( more reaction time ) and increase punching power thanks
To increase reaction time practice keeping your eyes open while getting hit. The better you at keeping your eyes open during sparring will dramatically increase reaction time. It is important to also be attentive while keeping yours open. At the end of the round you should be able to remember every move exchanged between you and your partner. As far as increasing punching power practice horse stance all the while attempting to sink your weight into the ground. The better you are making yourself heavy the more punching power you’ll have. But there is a catch, you need to have a great core and hips
Practicing dodging anyway you can will help, and check out my video on spidersense. But I’ll make a video on this in future. Would make an awesome topic :-D And thanks, I appreciate it :-D
One way I think of this one is like how the pinky contributes to the overall shape of the hand almost like how the arches of the feet work. If you relax your pinky it’s like actively not engaging your arch in the feet and that would leads to more difficulties in maintaining whatever shape you please (foot triangle or grip)
The pinky on the non-dominate hand becoming stronger is called "compensation strength" . We became familiarized with it while shooting guns. Its up to the bioneer to find out & go into detail from that term alone.
Wow! This is incredible. I am crawling every day as part of my routine, and this morning I tried putting emphasis on the pinky. I felt an immediate burn, so this is obviously a weak link for me. Can't wait to see the results in overall performance once this link in made up to par. Cannot help but think if there's similar applications for the little toe, which for most is completely immobilised by modern footwear. Thanks Adam.
I bought an adjustable grip trainer from 1-60 kg, and i noticed that i rarely used my pinky and i maxed out at around 30ish After using my pinky i could almost close 60 kg, but im still working on it :)
Very interesting. When i go overboard one of the first things to start playing up is my pinky finger. If i'm not careful the inflamation goes from the pinky up to the elbow. Currently tying rice bucket training to minimize my weakest links in gripping and the counter actors. Would love to see you look into rice bucket training!
Have you thought about doing a specific video on neural drive/muscle innervation/mind muscle connect and specifically training it? Maybe you already have and I just need to watch it, but if you haven't I think it'd be right in your wheelhouse.
Well, thank god I got two metacarpal fractures last year and my pinky one healed funny, and is like.. rotated inwards and has a hard time gripping anything properly lol
Loving your videos brother! I’m recovering from a “boxer’s fracture” of the base of ny pinky finger it’s doing pretty well but what would you recommend in this case?
@Luke Brown thanks I appreciate your answer!! Well I had to start working soon and I do landscaping. I kept doing push ups and pull ups and things that didn't bother the finger at all because I believe and have experienced that a "trained" body heals quicker than an untrained body if that makes sense. But did my best to not do anything that caused pain. I think all of this helped me to heal faster. So I was curious. Thank you so much!
You know 1 day I was angry and punched the wall and I felt my little finger pushed inside. Like I heard a crack and saw my finger going back while maintaining the same stance. Now I am fine but I was thinking it was useless. So now I know
Not sure if you check these old video's, but a good example of this would be Tommy Caldwell, who is one of the best rock climbers in the world and is missing a pointer finger.
I've been trying to find some video talking specifically about the pinky muscle and this kinda covered what I wanted to know but it's funny you say the pinky strength on the dominant hand is much greater because it's the opposite for me. The muscles on my left pinky look like a balloon with how massive they are especially when you compare it to my right hand which are probably average size. I'm right handed but I always noticed that my left hand is significantly stronger
Great video as always mate. Did you ever develop that tool that will let you view web pages with synaesthetic coloring? Because I'd love to have the link :)
The Yakuza maintain the tradition of removing little finger as punishment. My sensei surprised his doctors when they were measuring his grip strength because he gripped the measurement device like sword wit the strength in his little finger.
In your recent video on toe training, you mentioned band work for the individual toes. Could the same method be applied to the fingers? Thanks for always putting out such great content.
Woah I had that ninja gaiden figure when I was a kid it’s cool. I think I broke it or something, no idea where it is now though. :/ Ok maybe not that exact figure but it was still cool.
So if you to sacrifice ome finger for life? Which one? im thinking ring finger. thumb for laces, index for indexing, pinky forbstrength and middle for fingering and salutes
Bruce Lee one in China punch on wrist👌🏻 You got to check out the Martial Artist Dk Yoo. Can I Request a Video On special forces endurance training such as navy seals combat side stroke. Thanks Man!
I can't even move my pinkie one it's own on my non-dominant hand. When I flex it the ring finger works in tangent with it. But this behavior is not mimicked on my dominant hand. I'm trying to fix it. But I'm not sure if it's even a hindrance I should be worried about
Any tips for numbness and tingling in the pinky and ring finger? It happened after acupuncture and now when I hold stuff too long like mousing or holding phone it tingles.
Question: I just started running and I have a 3 days a week running program that I want to incorporate in my lifting routine. How can I set up my program so that I can still have a pretty decent heavy leg workout without impairing my recovery for the next running session? Thanks in advance.
Miyamoto Musashi said to also grip the katana hardest with the little finger, those samurai dudes knew wassup...
Fo sho!

How did you train it
I learned the pinkie strength through kendo
Awesome! Just like the samurai :-D
Exactly what I needed. Time to get stronger in training.
I learned from Jeff Cavalier that you should grip the bar pinky first. Performance improved immediately.
This is also probably why firearm triggers are only actuated by the index or at most both the index and middle finger. Because using the little finger to do so will sacrifice heavily the grip and thus handling of the weapon in your hands.

Cant wait for upcoming videos! This video was surprisingly useful!

Conic handles used by armwrestler is a good way to put more strain on the pinkie.
Awesome tip, thanks!

Thanks! Yeah, trying to increase output, will see if I can keep it up! :-D

Awesome. Will help with my pullups. Thank you
when i train grip i usually wrap my index finger around the bar first, im excited to try leading with the pinky.

True.
Your videos makes me smile of hapyness
I remember Ed Coan, in an interview, said that he trained pinch grip farmer's walks with his pinky fingers and thumbs gripping the plates.
This video is gonna change my life I’ve never used my little finger and I do jiu jitsu and always wondered why my grip felt a little awkward
Awesome! Hope it helps!

I use a pool noodle doubled on it's self or extra thick one for grip strength training. You can do quick grabs with it for marshal arts.
