Aaron, huge fan here and never too late to do things differently. I became disenchanted selling my speared fish 25 years ago and I was making more money out of that than my day job. Before you toss a reel or two that has failed on you, if I could pay you to ship it to me, I could take a crack at repairing it. I have the technical ability and tools to fix/replace the motors and replace electronic components. This is the only way I could ever afford to have one on my disability income. I would love to be able to try deep drop fishing. Even though your catch was limited, it looked like a great day on the water in the Keys. Life is good for the Key West Waterman... All good bro! Went out of Jupiter today. 9 hours of trolling everything along a weed line at the Gulf Stream…nada. Naked hoos, skirted hoos, weighted hoos, dredges, daisy chains, feathers in just about every color. Just a long boat ride. Was a nice day though 🤷♂️

I know you can't give away too much of your operation, but you have a fraction of your fanbase that are still learning. And we appreciate what may seem like over-explaining to some. Thank you as you always share the TRUTH about fishing in general including Rec and Commercial and we have good days and bad. Reality pops the social media illusion of never-ending success. I'll agree that it is getting harder to find the fish and of less quantity over the last decade plus. I'm over on the west coast of FL and we are finally having a decent kingfish run this year for whatever reason. It's still a grind and we do it because we love it! Thanks for what YOU do!

Hey Aaron, as I have been watching for a while now and don’t really know how all this “techno” stuff works, I wanted to comment on a previous video as I don’t know if you look back. On your “dock talk” where you interview other charter captains you speak with one other captain at a time. It occurred to me, that it would be fun to have more than one captain with you in your interview. I’m thinking that bringing a couple others would change the conversation and add much more valuable information to the conversation. Also, it may be a bit easier on you as the discussion would go ‘wherever” and you could pretty much direct it in the direction you choose…kinda of like herding cats. Just a thought but love all that you do. Keep it up. You are truly special in what you do and the way you deliver it. Thanks for listening.

Deep dropping is a new world to me. Never tried it. I don't think I've fished on the bottom in more than 200'. In Costa Rica I did probably get some baits that deep a few times catching Pacific snapper. Usually it wasn't that deep. My local friends used hand lines and we caught piles of fish for them to sell. I kept a couple for dinner and gave them the rest for taking me. You might want to think about keeping a jigging rod ready for fish suspemded off the bottom. I'd need a rod with a popper too to try while waiting for deeper bites. You always surprise us with mixed up content and I really appreciate it. It's very impressive, you don't get in a rut. Cool.

I remember fishing in 400-600' on party boats as a teenager in Cali. 3-6lb. weights. Fun but what a workout! I couldn't have afforded an electric reel but man, I would have loved one.
Aaron, it would be a good idea to point out the razor sharp tip of the gill plate on tile fish. Both species have this. A rookie can easily get a very severe cut not knowing about it. Get yourself a electric trolling motor with spot lock! you will triple your catch. Find good numbers and never share them with anybody. That's how to make $$$ deep droping!

But know I'm a conch born in 64 I wish you could've seen these reefs in the 60s and 70s brother All those rocks you drop on they used to alive elk and stag horn coral those finger reefs would blow your mind. Great video, I was just down there, we did some deep drops off key west. Didn’t do too good, three blue lines and about 10 yellow hinds or whatever those were. They ate really good, like small groupers 1-4lbs
you have to have tension on the line at all times and set with the power slide, sitting like that you dont feel anything and get eaten off... Same issue with mine, its the speed controller, just take it to a dealer they fix them for like 80 bucks.
I agree with your timing. Seems the bite happens between 9:30-11AM. Been out many a morning and had to wait until mid morning for a bite. Normally limit out between 9-11. Then time to go home. ***maybe team up with Bama Saltwater???
In high school we would fish yellowfin and sell it to local high end restaurants. I made huge money during season when I was allowed 3 yellowfin a day. As a Native American here in Canada, my treaty rights let me make a living off the land and sea. After I got out of the army I used all the money I saved to start fishing charters. That was much more profitable.
I caught a few of those on a slow day on a charter. It was a cool experience, just a little weird after watching blue marlin swat baits a few hours earlier. We hit them good late morning though.

If you have any contractor friends that sometime remodel old houses the old window sash weights work great and come in a bunch of different sizes and they just give them away. They work great for day time swords. It just fishing, better to be on the water.

That’s wild how deep you’re fishing for tiles down there in NC 270-300 is the magic number and you mentioned it was rocky too? Also much different than up here they love the mud the muddier the better the fishing. I didn’t realize they varied so greatly in depth and home conditions
Love the videos as always. I do disagree on your perspective on telling people not to deep drop unless they are targeting a certain species. There is only way to learn, and there are miles and miles of ground to cover. If you are not having the best of luck, it is not because of them. Either find some new ground and be creative, or else its just a bad day of deep dropping for whatever reason. Remember, everyone trying this out for the first time has to learn somehow. You were one of those people at one point in time.
I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. I love trying new things, I more than anyone have respect and patience for those learning. I personally didn't feel it was responsible to deep drop while the majority of the species were closed and one was open. so I never did it until everything was open.

ive noticed with me up in marathon deep dropping can be very tide dependent. spent a lot of time last year exploring and the minute tide would change every new spot we hit had fish. and before it would be dead.

Hey Aaron, have you ever thought of starting a line that competes with Grundens gear? Seems like a legit business idea to me. They definitely hold the top spot in waders, etc. Worth a few beers and thoughts, IMO. Keep up the great work bro !
First of all, I'm not a fisheries biologist. There are devices on the market that let you release deep-water that have been brought to the surface. Effectiveness is NOT 100%, but it is pretty high. One company that makes/sells these device is called Seaquilizer. I have no affiliation, I just think they make a worthwhile product.
I looked that up. Ted is correct. I thought they were specifically intended for grouper which I also thought could be very deep indeed, but beyond 300 ft. There’s apparently not much to be done.
Chiming in here… descending devices are very effective at releasing fish suffering from barotrauma at certain depths, but certainly the deeper you go the lower the survival. Vision can actually recover from barotrauma too after recompression which is pretty cool. Although not a ton of work has been done on deep dropping species, Kitty Mitchell’s have been caught in 450’, recompressed and survived long term. A study in California recently documented long-term survival in a rockfish species caught and descended in 590’. Aaron is correct that you shouldn’t be deep dropping if you don’t plan on keeping the fish, but fish in the 3,4 and 500’ range (and probably deeper) can survive release… just likely a low survival rate.

Hello I'm a commercial fisher from Australia and I mainly Deep Drop for Barred Rock Cod. I'm curious about the regulations you have in your fishery. We are constantly having new regulations forced on us. One of the main regs that have the most contention is Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) where we are tracked by fisheries the whole time we are on the water. I just wanted to ask if you have something similar to VMS on your commercial fishing boats over in the States? Cheers
In the Gulf of Mexico, some of the permits require you to have a VMS yes, They have not implemented it on the Atlantic side yet where we are mainly but yes some boats and areas are required to have it on their dime.

I like .7 orb..8 when I want to fish good and cover ground .3 to .5 when I have it dialed in. I spent most of my time in the deep. You got a great wife and a great house in a great place oh and a great cooking friend lol clams. The rest are jealous focus on the positive
Deep drop fish grow very very slow. Its a big ocean but a lot of deep droppers hit the same spots. Commercial fishing when its hot and they find a congregation can wipe a lot of grouper in a hurry due to the way commercial limits are set. Don't take this the wrong way but I honestly think there is more money (for the county as a whole) that could be left in the keys for tourism charter fishing if the deep drop were removed from commercial in Monroe county and were left for recreational and charter only. Deep drop used to always be a simple drop and go for at least a fish for dinner to finish off a long day of dry trolling.
I don't take that personally at all, you should hear the stories from the first guys that figured it out, would catch a 200 lb snowy limit in 3 drops. You can undoubtedly wipe out areas, I've seen it first hand. Unfortunately I think it's too far gone (in some areas) as the fish grown insanely slow as you said. It all boils back down to mismanaged fisheries, regulations set by people who aren't out on the water seeing the stuff first hand.
@@KeyWestWaterman My wife and I have seen it while diving in a few spots each year where we see over 50 red grouper in one spot. They seem to always return to those spots.

for deep dropping you have to run 100+ miles in the gulf, Atlantic drops off much faster!

That’s wild how deep you’re fishing for tiles down there in NC 270-300 is the magic number and you mentioned it was rocky too? Also much different than up here they love the mud the muddier the better the fishing. I didn’t realize they varied so greatly in depth and home conditions

just motor the boat in reverse, but depends on the spot alot of time you wanna cover ground.
Love the videos as always. I do disagree on your perspective on telling people not to deep drop unless they are targeting a certain species. There is only way to learn, and there are miles and miles of ground to cover. If you are not having the best of luck, it is not because of them. Either find some new ground and be creative, or else its just a bad day of deep dropping for whatever reason. Remember, everyone trying this out for the first time has to learn somehow. You were one of those people at one point in time.
I think you misunderstood what I was getting at. I love trying new things, I more than anyone have respect and patience for those learning. I personally didn't feel it was responsible to deep drop while the majority of the species were closed and one was open. so I never did it until everything was open.

ive noticed with me up in marathon deep dropping can be very tide dependent. spent a lot of time last year exploring and the minute tide would change every new spot we hit had fish. and before it would be dead.

First of all, I'm not a fisheries biologist. There are devices on the market that let you release deep-water that have been brought to the surface. Effectiveness is NOT 100%, but it is pretty high. One company that makes/sells these device is called Seaquilizer. I have no affiliation, I just think they make a worthwhile product.
Seaquilizers deepest setting is 300ft, anything typically more then that and the eyes pop their dead.
I looked that up. Ted is correct. I thought they were specifically intended for grouper which I also thought could be very deep indeed, but beyond 300 ft. There’s apparently not much to be done.
Chiming in here… descending devices are very effective at releasing fish suffering from barotrauma at certain depths, but certainly the deeper you go the lower the survival. Vision can actually recover from barotrauma too after recompression which is pretty cool. Although not a ton of work has been done on deep dropping species, Kitty Mitchell’s have been caught in 450’, recompressed and survived long term. A study in California recently documented long-term survival in a rockfish species caught and descended in 590’. Aaron is correct that you shouldn’t be deep dropping if you don’t plan on keeping the fish, but fish in the 3,4 and 500’ range (and probably deeper) can survive release… just likely a low survival rate.
I’m familiar, I have several descending devices. But after four or 500 feet I don’t think they stand much of a chance.

Hello I'm a commercial fisher from Australia and I mainly Deep Drop for Barred Rock Cod. I'm curious about the regulations you have in your fishery. We are constantly having new regulations forced on us. One of the main regs that have the most contention is Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) where we are tracked by fisheries the whole time we are on the water. I just wanted to ask if you have something similar to VMS on your commercial fishing boats over in the States?

In the Gulf of Mexico, some of the permits require you to have a VMS yes, They have not implemented it on the Atlantic side yet where we are mainly but yes some boats and areas are required to have it on their dime.

Glad to see you commercial. Pup shark on the hook. You were still doing what you love and the market won’t turn the fish away. People will consume it. I like .7 orb..8 when I want to fish good and cover ground .3 to .5 when I have it dialed in. I spent most of my time in the deep. You got a great wife and a great house in a great place oh and a great cooking friend lol clams. The rest are jealous focus on the positive
Deep drop fish grow very very slow. Its a big ocean but a lot of deep droppers hit the same spots. Commercial fishing when its hot and they find a congregation can wipe a lot of grouper in a hurry due to the way commercial limits are set. Don't take this the wrong way but I honestly think there is more money (for the county as a whole) that could be left in the keys for tourism charter fishing if the deep drop were removed from commercial in Monroe county and were left for recreational and charter only. Deep drop used to always be a simple drop and go for at least a fish for dinner to finish off a long day of dry trolling.
I don't take that personally at all, you should hear the stories from the first guys that figured it out, would catch a 200 lb snowy limit in 3 drops. You can undoubtedly wipe out areas, I've seen it first hand. Unfortunately I think it's too far gone (in some areas) as the fish grown insanely slow as you said. It all boils back down to mismanaged fisheries, regulations set by people who aren't out on the water seeing the stuff first hand.
@@KeyWestWaterman My wife and I have seen it while diving in a few spots each year where we see over 50 red grouper in one spot. They seem to always return to those spots.
