I think the Seneschal is a character that's incredibly nuanced like the games plot is. He does not test you out of malice, but through the necessity to free himself of the chain and find a new stronger keeper to fit to craft the will to live. It seems even a god understands his time is temporary, and I think that expresses incredible wisdom. We see so many times Gods in fantasy are selfish and greedy. Willing to burn entire worlds to hold onto their seat of power. The Seneschal is a fantastic expression of how ones journey to absolute power that has been tempered can become worthy of it, seeing as how you were willing to fight the worlds greatest danger to spare the one closest to you.
The "Myths of the Realm" raid series in FFXIV is similar. The goods (though technically they aren't devine) know that the world no longer needs them and have you come fight them to return their "aether" to the world so they can move on (effectively die). They are all actually very nice. A former wow player commented it was the first time he'd seen gods in a game that weren't assholes.
For those who may be confused. If you replace the Seneschal you cast them down to be the next dragon. And you stab yourself to gift your pawn the ultimate gift. The gift of freedom in your place. You take your place as seneschal, watching over the world as your pawn lives your life. Unbound from the bindings of the rift. Needing no master to guide them.
@Ax4 there are others. If you fall/die went fighting the Seneschal. You have failed in proving yourself and descend unto the world as the next dragon If you chose life of solitude presented to you then you awake in your village normal and are able to live your life peacefully...in an illusion. If you sacrifice your beloved by taking the dragon's deal you become the next Duke in Solitude. Very depressing.
@Ax4 i mean you can choose to not pursue the dragon and go to Bitterblack or explore the land in its entirety. Nothing is stopping you from doing so. The dragon forged is old and chooses to guide arisen. Living as a hermit in Hillfigure knoll. He accepts his fate gladly
Unfortunately there's a bit of an error in your comment. The seneschal you replace doesn't become the next dragon, instead he finally becomes free of the cycle entirely and gets to finally die.
@@spazzmaticus9086 apologies that's what I figured. Then where does the next dragon come from or does it just get manifested into existence since the seneschal can create life?
@@kaworusilentpaw7246 honestly yeah, probably the seneschal can just make a new dragon out of nothing, especially considering that an arisen becoming a dragon has absolutely 0 bearing on the dragons job.
Seeing as how 2 was a retelling of the story and not a real sequel, i wish they kept this aspect. As much as DD became one of my absolute favorite IPs, 2s ending left a dull feeling in my mouth. I just wanted to be a fisher turned god again. Hell, even DDON had a more interesting story, and it never got past season 3..
@@gionathancurryDragons Dogma Online was an MMO based on Dragons Dogma, as far as I can recall, it was never released in the west, and has since been turned into Dragons Dogma Offline. There are some efforts to revive it I’ve heard.
lol I like how this 2016 video just showed up in my feed. So stabbing yourself with the Godsbane sword sends you back down to the world as a normal human with your romance waiting for you? The previous Seneschal pulled the blade out of himself and was stuck up there the whole time. What am I missing here?
It doesn't make a lot of sense, you die when stabbed and your Pawn becomes you...so no idea. As to why this video popped up now...you probably watched the Netflix series or something. P.S. I'm still pissed the game picke Julien as my love interest because I spoke to him last, it was supposed to be one of the women.
It's been a while, but I think it's from the Ur-Dragon armor I'm wearing, I forget the name of it. Here is one of my Ur-Dragon kills. th-cam.com/video/X9GklTzitpo/w-d-xo.html

Why is this game just such a masterpiece? After realizing how much deeper the plot goes after I killed the dragon, the game really clicked for me
I keep looking back on all the other fantasy games I have played and they keep missing the same thing Dragons Dogma has. A point to your "destiny".
