Boeing Starliner Parachute Test in New Mexico

  • #Starliner parachutes were put to the test one final time using a high altitude balloon at White Sands Space Harbor in New Mexico in September. A Starliner test article equipped with reused parachutes was lifted 35,000 feet to initiate and simulate an unlikely "two-fault" scenario the spacecraft could experience upon reentry. Despite the higher loads and stresses from reuse, Starliner’s parachutes performed as expected ending a reliability campaign designed to build out even more landing system robustness ahead of crewed flights.

    I like how it gets completely quiet once the three main chutes fully unfurl (Reminds me of the times I went skydiving :D)

      That system is MCAS (i think) and that was only used on the MAX aircraft because of the LEAP engines, that has nothing to do with starliner

    • @anonymousperson2110
      @anonymousperson2110 3 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      No, the Starliner is designed to land on solid land (cushioned by airbags). This is better for reusability, because saltwater destroys lots of components.

    • @mikeking596
      @mikeking596 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Starliner can land on water (the landing air bags act as flotation), but that's more of a backup. It would be bad if a launch abort occurred during boost (heading east from Florida) and it sank in the Atlantic ocean.

    It’s old fashioned, though. It’s just like a Chinese copy. You can get all the blue prints for what NASA did before I was born online! NASA wants something new that they can reuse. Not go back in time. I don’t know who Boeing expects to buy it. NASA can do that themselves. 😂

    • @mikeking596
      @mikeking596 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      buy it? This is being built on a fix priced contract from NASA including multiple flights. It's already been bought. Boeing has the option to use it for other services (tourist, etc), but will have a harder time using it that way since it's operational costs are nearly double SpaceX Crew Dragoon (built under a similar contract).
