Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters are DOMINATING Pickleball

  • Ben Johns and Anna Leigh Waters are the undisputed, unbeatable power duo of professional pickleball mixed doubles. This video examines how the two young phenoms - Johns, the greatest men's player ever, and Waters, the world #1 woman at just 16 years old - have partnered to obliterate their competition unlike anything the sport has seen. We break down the factors fueling their total dominance - Johns' unprecedented mastery, Waters' meteoric rise, their perfectly complementary playing styles, and a lack of depth among the competition. Their 11 tournament win streak and utter destruction of opponents have many calling for rule changes to "even the playing field." But for now, their reign of terror continues as they shatter records and pile up titles with ease. Can any team pose a threat to this embarrassing-of-riches pairing that's making mixed doubles unfairly one-sided?

No reason their should be a handicap and they should stay paired. It will only elevate the level of play in mixed doubles. Why can't the number 2 singles players pair up?

I agree, this should only push the sport in a positive direction and increase the level of play.

You are right it’s just a matter of time when ever legendary team falls. Now is just a waiting game. Who do you think it will be to take them down? Or is it pair we have not seen before. So many are transferring from tennis. Only time will tell.

It's often good for a sport to have a dominant team. Their opponents elevate their play against them. Personally I love watching them. Ben and his brother Collin are equally dominant in men's doubles.

This is not unfair at all ... dominant players (and teams) happen from time-to-time - if players do not like it then they need to be get better - it is not unfair. Other teams also to need to keep together longer not change every 3-4 tournaments. Pickleball is in its early stages as a sport, as it grows, dont be surprised if both Ben Johns and AL Waters dont make it to the GOLD metal all the time in 2024. D Schaefer or Christine Maddox (best two handed backhand in pickleball) - should handle AL Waters soon. And D Frazier, C Alshon should be defeating B Johns soon as well. Team these ladies with these men - consistently - and should have less of Ben and AL show. TMcGuffin / MDizon could also do it if they stay together longer than 3 months - Dizon has the fight to blow past AL if she takes up singles - singles play will improve her doubles game.

You make some good points. Dominant players Like Ben and anna demonstrate incredible skill, but as pickleball grows we’ll likely see more competition depth. They will undoubtedly be challenged more and more as the years go on.

I'm trying to remember if Tennis ever had the same dilemma with a dominant 1+1=1 combo that wouldn't leave.
Not that I can remember. Mixed doubles is so popular in the recreational pickle population.
Eventually they'll want to separate or something like an injury will break it. I say enjoy while it lasts Bud. Cause it never does.

11:52 there is no reason to break this team up my wife and I look forward to watching them, as any team sports when teams get lucky enough to get players that just gel together work hard by both putting extra Time to make sure they improve their own play thru practice and innovation why should they be penalized.

This reminds me of the olden days where there were yells to "Break up the Yankees" or "Break up the Celtics" or "Break up UCLA" (if these don't ring a bell, look up the records of these teams in the 50's and 60's). Personally I love to watch them play. I love to see excellent athletes in action. I have been following AL since the early days when she played Simone Jardim at 12. You could see the potential even back then (look it up. Simone killed her, but you could see the talent).

Now more ex pro tennis players are turning to PickleBall and starting to raise in the rankings. John Sock is one of them. You will see the quality of players raise if the money follows the trend.

I do not sit and watch PPA, maybe at a quick glance like these and some tip videos not always their entirety. I'd rather be outside playing Pickleball than watching it. I find that Pickleball keeps Penalizing good players and their overall athleticism, because others can't keep up or execute the same level of play.

This is the stupid thing I have ever heard. When some of the mixed double pairs play continuous together and get used to playing together, maybe then they will bet the best Mixed Double team in pickleball. Watch out for JW and Jorja Johnson or Bright and Ignatowich, they both are looking great for 2024.

It's ultimately a business. Professional teams (baseball, basketball, football, etc) all pay loads of money to get the best players they can so they can win and make more money. I think it would get really complicated if they started making rules about who could play with other players or not, depending on their ranking. I tried to find rules online to see if tennis pros have any restrictions, but in my 30 second search I came up empty. If tennis has those kinds of rules, just use them. If not, let them have their heyday for now. Somebody will come up and replace them at one point.

I am a huge fan of this team, I love watching them destroy opponents. However, I can see why maybe they should be broken up, if that’s possible or even legal to do. They really are just too good and I admire the other teams that valiantly oppose them. Maybe two players who are both ranked as number one should not be allowed to be a team. But then what is actually fair?
