An interesting historical fact: James Madison (the one coughing the entire second act) outlived all of the other founding fathers portrayed in this show. He was sick his whole career and yet they died before him.

tbf this also has a flipside, the full thing was warning him of hubris and arrogance; flying too close to the sun would melt the wax) and also complacency; flying too low and the sea would damp his wings and he'd fall. All about finding that good middle ground!

I thought she was really burning paper. Every time I see that part I wonder how many safety inspections they must need and whether they have a fire crew on standby or something. Theater fires are some of the most horrific disasters in history. In his Tony awards speech he says “elizas story is told” and on the red carpet he says he hoped Eliza would be proud of him for telling the Hamiltons’ story because that’s what she fought for 50 years of her life. I’ve always thought the name of the show was actually because of her. And I very much enjoy the theory that when Lin holds elizas hand and shows her the audience in the last song, it’s him saying “look Eliza I told your story!” answering her question in the same song “will they tell my story?”

Travel took much longer in the 1800s, (there was no such thing as cars or planes) so funerals weren't always held immediately after a person's death. Loved that you included Helpless in this! Fun fact: Lin modelled it after early 2000's Ashanti and Ja Rule songs. That's why at the end of his rap, he lowers his voice and growls through it like Ja (it also made Philippa Soo laugh). So for the Hamilton Mixtape, they actually got Ashanti and Ja to sing it. There's a video on TH-cam of them performing it on the Hamilton stage!

Yes, it’s such an amazing detail!! Throughout the majority of the musical, Burr’s “wait for it” motto is basically seen as foolish and is often mocked by Alexander in particular, but near the end the tone and connotation of that phrase shifts into genuine advice and concern. It starts being used as a way to worriedly warn the characters against making very bad decisions, such as Hamilton writing the Reynold’s Pamphlet and Burr deciding to fire his gun during their duel. Burr even screams “WAIT!” right as his gun fires and the bullet hits Hamilton, as if at that moment Burr’s own conscience is desperately trying to stop him from making what would turn out to be the worst mistake of his entire life.
There’s an amazing video analysis of that “wait for it” motif on TH-cam that I think you might really enjoy!! I can’t remember the channel or the exact title of the video, but I think the title includes something about ‘emotion’ and ‘motifs’. It’s the perfect balance of informative and entertaining, and it also goes into detail about the part you mentioned!

  • @PollypocketE

More foreshadow: when phillip was 9 he kept messing up count in French and he messed up count in the duel. When phillip was asking the girls for George eacker, the girl with the blond and black hair is called the bullet. So when he flirts with the bullet he flirting with death.

"What was Peggy just doing?" Peggy's choreography in that moment matches Satisfied's beat. Notice that when Eliza is saying "I grabbed my sister and whispered this one's mine" the way she's glancing back at Alexander doesn't match her song at all either... But it matches Satisfied. (I look in my sister's eyes and she is -- helpless! -- and I know she is -- helpless! -- and I realized three fundamental things at the exact same time!)
Helpless and Satisfied have nearly identical choreography since it's both sisters memories of the same two weeks. There's a really good comparison video out now.

When Eliza says the line “In clearing your name, you have ruined //our// lives” in Burn, she isn’t talking about herself and Alexander, she’s talking about her and Maria Reynolds.
Eliza never once puts blame on Maria and seems to understand that her husband was forcing her to do it, and that this would RUIN her. Maria Reynolds was NOBODY, there’s no way for her to defend herself or speak her side of the story.
At least Eliza can recover from the shame and pain, she’s independently rich. Maria isn’t, she’s done.
To the entire population she’s just a loose whore who isn’t worth anything, and it’s Alexander and her husband’s fault she’s in that situation.
It says a lot about how kind and selfless a person her character truly is.

In 1804, Burr was running for governor of New York. Hamilton had privately voiced his criticism of Burr in a letter to his friend which was leaked. In the end Burr lost the election and blamed Hamilton for what he considered to be slander and demanded Hamilton apologize. When this was refused, Burr challenged him to a duel. Now dueling was in fact illegal but since they were affairs of honor, they were rarely ever prosecuted (also because as the play says "Most disputes end and no one shoots"). The duel between the two men took place in Weehawken, NJ on the morning of July 11, 1804. In a letter to his wife, Hamilton actually wrote the line "to the best of wives and best of women..." When they had marked out the paces, Burr noticed Hamilton fiddling with his gun and examining the ground. Hamilton then looked up and said to Burr "Forgive me sir for delaying you" and then proceeded to put on his spectacles. Burr took this to mean that Hamilton intended on shooting him. In reality, Hamilton had confided in his second that day that he would satisfy his principles on dueling (he was against the practice of taking a life) and his public honor by firing into the air. There was no way for Burr to know this. Both men fired so closely together that the seconds argued who actually fired first. Hamilton's shot went into the air; Burr's pierced Hamilton's side and lodged into his liver. He died the next day at the age of 47 or 49 (his exact birthday is unknown; some accounts say 1755 and others 1757). Burr was charged with murder though he was never prosecuted.

Icarus ignored his father's instructions not to fly too close to the sun; when the wax in his wings melted he tumbled out of the sky and fell into the sea where he drowned, sparking the idiom "don't fly too close to the sun". So two little facts I have found out after watching the musical 1) when Eliza was running in to see Philip before he died she was dressed in all black and it was because she had just come back from Peggy’s (her younger Sisters) funeral She had died the same year Philip died but different months and I thought it was very sad because she was young (42 when she was already married I believe and then died) and then Eliza got news that her son was dying after. 2) When Eliza says “I live another 50 years” she lived a long time and in that time spent it by trying to piece together everything of Alexander, the soldiers he fought by Washington, Her sisters, everyone she spent all that time telling their stories doing stuff like raising funds for the Washington monument and establishing the first private orphanage and within that time span she started becoming Purblind and almost Deaf.

Ok so if no one else has explained it yet, the story of Icarus and his father, Daedalus, is that they were trapped on an island by a king who kept Daedalus there because he was a great inventor. Daedalus made a plan to escape with Icarus by creating wings for them both using feathers fastened together by wax. The two flew away and Daedalus asked his son to be careful and not fly too high or too low. Icarus, just a kid and enjoying the freedom and ability to show off, flew up too close to the sun, resulting in the wax melting and feathers falling off. He couldn’t stay up in the air anymore and ended up falling into the ocean and drowning. So Hamilton flying too close to the sun was Angelica’s fear that Hamilton wanted fame, money, and success so badly that he might ruin himself for it. There is a real letter from Angelica to Eliza Hamilton making this reference.

39:35 Icarus is a greek mithology tale, its about an inventor and his son (icarus) who are trying to scape a prison of a tour ( they were inprisoned by no fair reason), the dad takes the feathers of the birds of the tower and wax from the candles and makes 2 pairs of wings, he warns Icarus to not fly to down becuse the water splashing from the sea would tear the wings apart and not to fly to high becuse the sun would melt the wax, the wings worked but Icarus loved the feeling of flying so he got higher, he couldnt hear his fathers warnings and he flew to close to the sun.

  • @52andattitude48

And yeah Icarus is a Greek(?) myth where, long story short, a human boy named Icarus got some mechanical wings that made him fly. Out of arrogance he went way too high and flew straight into the Sun and died. (CORRECTION IN THE REPLIES!)
So when people say “they are an Icarus”, it means they’re so cocky that they’ll die (or hurt others) because of their ego.
So Angelica told Eliza that Alexander is an Icarus because he hurt Eliza and their son just to save his own reputation.

No, his wings were made of wax and they melted because he flew too close to the sun. “You’ve married an Icarus and he has flown too close to the sun.” It’s a story meant to convey that being too greedy will be your downfall. Icarus was given the gift of flight, but he couldn’t be SATISFIED, and just had to go higher and higher until his wings melted.

I'm so glad you finally put posted part 2. It's really enjoyable watching with you. Musical theater is my life and any time others get involved, I love it!
Ps: here's how I described Aaron Burr to my son -
If "Down for whatever" and "Hatin' ass bitch" had a baby, it would be Burr. 😂

"Why Aaron Burr always in the trenches somewhere!"
    "Like get in the mix!"
Exactly, that's the whole point lmao

"Hamilton was simping for Maria Reynolds" is the most accurate, unspoken truth I've ever heard.

If you guys are into musicals y’all should watch Newsies next!!! There are 2 versions, the original movie and the newer stage play. Both are good and on Disney+ but I recommend the stage play to see some INSANE dancing skills and a similarish vibe to Hamilton. Love your reactions!!

I love that two of these guys have seen this as many times as I have; when they start bopping at the beginning of Say No to This it was fantastic,

Oh I forgot to say that Burr’s daughter also died young which makes that song even sadder. They both had such high hopes for their children 😢
