    "Sim City 2013... Is it any good?" Ah. Remember when there was still mystery and optimism? lol

    • @liesdamnlies3372
      @liesdamnlies3372 8 ปีที่แล้ว +93

      No. :( I had no optimism. I was sure EA was going to fuck it all up hard, especially after Societies (bleck). As soon as I see EA is the publisher of something my mind goes to "Well, better wait for a bunch of reviews first before I decide to even invest any time in thinking about getting it."

      After playing the beta of SimCity 2013, I was sure the game was going to be a flop. The game wasn't even alpha quality during the beta! I felt like the game was being rushed out as some kind of EA sudo kickstarter. As far as I know, SimCity 2013 never supported Fullscreen (Windowed) mode, which was a basic and common feature even then!? It was frustrating having a game act like a game from the year 2000.

    • @PFAlt
      @PFAlt 7 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      +lies damnlies Societies wasn't made by EA, nor was it a full game or a title in the main series. It was a spinoff sold at a reduced price compared to the actual series and made from some contracted 3rd party dev focusing more on social issues than city building.

    Sim City 4 was the last great sim city sadly. When they started making all the terrible ones I'll never forget what EA officially told the fans who called them out on it. "Sim City is moving away from simulator based play as this is a niche market and we want to broaden the base of sim city fans" --EA. Thankfully they were proven dead wrong when Cities Skylines came out and out sold all of the sim cities since sim city 4. Lesson for game developers: DO NOT ALIENATE YOUR CORE FAN BASE.

    • @ryanmassie448
      @ryanmassie448 6 ปีที่แล้ว +65

      But it's EA if they aren't making half a billion dollars off of it than it is not a successful game and must be reworked to "appeal" to the largest market possible, or in most cases completely drive it into the ground and kill the studio with micro transactions.

      It literally takes a game which is popular, bastardizes the name from its roots, and leaves a game with no audience or message for the market.

    • @ryanhalien8468
      @ryanhalien8468 5 ปีที่แล้ว +27

      Unfortunately to “broaden the appeal” of a game often means To rework a game in such a way that those who love the franchise will now hate it, but possibly those who didn’t like it/know about it might, possibly, LIKE it. That is beyond foolish and will end up killing game franchises yet so many developers insist on going down this path. In the end greed ruins everything

    The SimCity 4 music (and to a lesser extent SimCity 3000's music) is just so good for relaxing, kicking back, or just for...anything. The music just has a perfect feel, and I listen to it all the time while on my laptop or in the car.

      That's people say some things were ahead of their times. The market was either too short sighted to see what they had, the inventor didn't have enough ambition/charisma to properly market it, religious/political BS prevented it from catching on or actively stomped it out, etc.

      Skylines just feels too easy even if you get a hardmode mard that makes everything more expensive and well "harder" I have yet to fail in a city I've built but in SimCity 4 I'd overlook some small issue early on then next thing you know I'd be bankrupt because of it.

    • @besotoxicomusic
      @besotoxicomusic 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      This. I found deluxe for $5 at a thrift store and with the mods I ended up putting years and hundreds of hours into it. Made some crazy interchanges that couldn’t really be utilized in game to the max due to the software placed limitations for how far people were willing to commute for work.
      Cities skyline can more easily make these interchanges and utilize them better but I still think SC4 plain looked better.

Atheism is ironically still a religion, regardless of the claims and protests otherwise on the matter, and b. the 'real life simulation" of the people that are in those games where such a thing is a priority is about as realistic as a scripted Hollywood television show, or, more accurately, some pseudo-reality drivel like Big Brother, Survivor, Jersey Shore, etc. I, for one, want to build a far more realistic city building simulation game that fixes not only the flaws of the Sim City games, but also those flaws in other games of its related ilk, and The Sims as well.

    I worked for Maxis back in 97 when EA took over. Everyone in our studio was promptly laid off the next day. All our projects were either cancelled or given to other studios and had our names removed from the credits. One of the other folks from the Walnut Creek main office quit (or whatever) and formed a media company and hired me on as a graphic artist. I remember he had that original "Godzilla-like" toy that was featured in the original box art sitting on his desk.
    I will never forgive EA for effectively ending my career in the video game industry.

    I know this is a bit late in the game to mention it but there was a port of SimCity 2000 to Windows CE/Pocket PC 2002. It ran just like the Windows version and save files were compatiable between the two. I was amazed the find it when I was in high school and had all the same music and graphics, just on a tiny touch screen in your pocket to boot. I haven't seen it mentioned so I thought I'd throw it out there. It had the issue of costing $30 USD at the time with SimCity 3000 already being out on the market.

    Sim City 3000 Deutschland was so awesome! I loved the scenarios so much. The other located scenarios such as "London Fires" and similar were also fun but even from an international perspective they stand no chances against the reunification of Berlin! It was so cool to demolish the Berlin Wall, connect the separated infrastructure and renovate the fucked up eastern Berlin. I missed such scenarios in SC4 (even though I loved the game because of the mod community). The scenario of "A better Betterfeld" (?) was also amazing because it is based on the real story of Bitterfeld - maybe the city with the lowest environmental life quality in whole central Europe (and it is so clean, calm, modern and green today!).
    Don't have to talk about SC2013. Societies had it's moments but was to limited in all points.

      It's actually a pretty decent game. The problem is that map sizes are limited, there are no building sets, too much emphasis on multiplayer, and not enough "god mode" aspect. But I mean--it's still an enjoyable game. I've clocked 60+ hours in it.

    • @isabellalukas8955
      @isabellalukas8955 10 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Good Decision! Then maybe you want to look for some custom content. New stuff is created even now 11 years after the initial release. That contains new buildings, various fixes for several bugs in the vanilla game and even new network types (the Network Addon Mod). Therefore you should take a look at simtropolis.com where most stuff is released (more than 18000 files right now), whilst at sc4devotion.com/csxlex you get high quality content only, which might be better for the beginner. In order to download stuff you have to sign up at both sites.

      True. And it doesn't offer much in terms of replayability, either. Once you reach the edges of the map and have achieved everything (which can be done in a day) the game is done.

    Sim City 3000 will always be my favorite. Detailed yet simple. All they needed to do was keep updating graphics but they just kept adding and changing shit nobody asked for, leading to the games of today like Cities Skylines where you need to be a literal city planner to properly build a city. Simply too much work required.

    "Societies" had some cool elements - the way the city, environment, and even music changed based on what you placed was really interesting, and earning points in different categories was ahead of its time. Whatever Maxis comes out with in the future, I'd love to see elements of SCS mixed with more advanced city simulators like Cities: Skylines, Cities XL, and even oldschool ones like CityState, Pharaoh, etc.
