  • Billy Joel sings "Summer, Highland Falls" at Farm Aid in Champaign, Illinois on September 22, 1985.
A performance from the first Farm Aid benefit concert. Willie Nelson, Neil Young and John Mellencamp founded Farm Aid and serve on the board of directors. The three agreed that family farmers were in dire need of assistance and decided to plan a concert for America. The show was put together in six weeks and was held on September 22, 1985 in Champaign, Illinois before a crowd of 80,000 people. It raised over $9 million for America's family farmers. Performers included Bob Dylan, Billy Joel, B.B. King, Loretta Lynn, Roy Orbison, Tom Petty and many more.
Dave Matthews joined Farm Aid's Board of Directors in 2001 to help further Farm Aid's mission of keeping family farmers on their land.

It's on the album "Turnstiles," which most of his fans consider his best album overall (though not as famous as "Stranger" or even "Piano Man."

With all due respect I disagree. He was a more pure tenor at this point but I think he was at his vocal heights in 90s-early 2000s. He still had the vocal range he exhibits here PLUS an emotional pain in his voice that only the greatest of singers had (Ray Charles, Judy Garland, Edith Piaf). ALL ABOUT SOUL is one of the top 10 vocal performances ever recorded, imo. Technique combined with feeling.

    • @DrakeMayeGlazer

Lynn Turman hey Lynn sorry I’m late. I’m going to have to agree and agree. I think he was his best vocals when he made songs in the attic. But yes the mid to late 90s were when he really got his raspiness and experience in his voice that I just love. River of dreams also just such good singing

@@lynnturman8157 I’m even more late, but this is NOT a pure tenor Billy Joel as you just said, his voice was clearer and more tenor-esque earlier in his carrer in the 70s and his throat didn’t get strained nor closed when he tried to reach higher notes

And you can barely hear the piano b/c the Farm Aid sound guys could give a fuck about the piano. It's all about guitar, bass & drums. Love how the piano is always an afterthought, yet every band always wants a keys player to do the fancy shit a guitar player can't do. Glad we're good for something.
