    We are taking you up to Mount Titlis, one of the most scenic destinations in Switzerland, high in the Swiss Alps.
    Please subscribe: bit.ly/2pmdyeu
    Switzerland playlist bit.ly/2qsUism
    The most exciting excursion out of Lucerne is to Mount Titlis where you can get a chance to frolic in the snow at the top of a mountain, guaranteed because it's a glacier, so there is snow all year round, throughout the summer throughout the winter and it just takes 2 hours to get from Lucerne up to the mountaintop. It is really a thrill to go up in the summer time and play because you wouldn't expect to run into snow on a warm summer day, but there it is, and it's very easy to get there. You take the scenic train from Lucerne on a one hour journey to Engelberg enjoying beautiful views of the mountains, farms and villages along the way.
    Mount Titlis provides a spectacular view right into the heart of the Alps with the lofty peaks of the Jungfrau, Munch and Eiger visible in the distant Bernese Overland on a clear day, the Titlis viewing platform at 10,000 feet elevation has an elaborate multistoried restaurant, café and gift shop complex, along with ice cream snack bar and coffee bar out on the terrace in typical Swiss fashion. They have civilized this mountain and provided creature comforts while bringing you right into this wild natural environment.
    Another activity while you're at the top of Mount Titlis is the glacier tunnel. It's an ice tunnel that they've carved right into the foundation of the glacier itself and there is colorful lighting inside. They have some ice sculptures inside and secure footing on a good rubber mat walkway and it's a lot of fun. You walk in the tunnel which goes around in a small loop circle. It just takes a few minutes but be sure to look for the ice grotto while you're up top.
    One of the most exciting attractions is called the Cliff Walk. It's a pedestrian suspension bridge that gives you dramatic views looking all around, and even straight down 500 meters beneath your feet. It's claimed to be the highest suspension bridge in Europe and there is no extra charge for walking on it so by all means take advantage. It opened up at the end of 2012. It took them 5 months to build it and it has become a really popular attraction, sometimes called the world's scariest bridge.
    For some more fun on the trip down you can get off the cable car at the next-to-last stop and rent a scooter to ride down the final mile. It is just a simple stand up foot scooter, you hold onto those handlebars with both hands and it's a wonderful ride that goes around zigzagging down on the road, which is at times a gravel road, a dirt road, but mostly it's a paved road. So it's really quite safe, quite fun. You’ve got good brakes with the scooter so you can slow down, you can stop, take a picture. Don't try and take any pictures while you're moving because you’ve got to keep both hands on the handlebars and wear that little protective helmet that comes with the rental. At the bottom you just leave the scooter in the pavilion and they will pick it up for you.

    I really am jealous! What a fantastic life getting to travel as much as you do. I was wondering if you could say whether or not most of Europe is wheelchair friendly? I’d really like to take my father but I’m worried most of the historic places which he wants to see are not wheelchair friendly. Thanks for all the fantastic videos.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thanks for that...yes I'm fortunate, and work hard to make those new movies keep coming. Titlis is wheelchair friendly, as you might notice in this movie. Many European places are not however -- they don't have a lot of curb-cuts in sidewalks, and there are many cobbled lanes in the most charming areas. Switzerland is more advanced in these provisions.

    Thank you Dennis. I was really looking hard to find such a video introducing the way for Titlis. In regards to scooter, how can I reach Gerschnialp? There are two cables as I understand from your video. The first from Engelberg Talstation to Stand, then from Stand to the Summit and vice versa. So, how can I reach the scooter stop? You have some videos with maps illustrations and I do really thank you for them.

    • @denniscallan

      Yes, my Titlis video, like most of my work, is detailed, glad you like it. The scooters are available when you change cablecars on your way back down from Titlis. It's easy. Just ask one of the workers, they will explain. It is definitely worth it.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  7 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I'm glad the Titlis video is helpful. I generally don't mention prices because there are many different possibilities, depending on what discount you might have from Swiss Pass or other options, and the prices do change from one year to the next, so it's best for you to do a web search and you will get current info on range of possibilities. It gets a bit complicated -- I've found that sometimes the clerks at the rail station are not even sure!

      I started from Innetkirchen (near Meiringen) and the train ticket was about 40.- (or $) to Engelberg, where the cable cars start. I believe the ticket from Lucerne was about half that. So it was 80.- for the train tickets (2nd class) plus 92.- fot the cable car.

    The Spannort Hotel has a more than excellent restaurant. It has always been of a Swiss family, but around 2009 it was bought by a Skandinavian chef who brought it to an even higher level. Their Chateaubriand roast for two persons minimum is the best, from Swiss cows that are fed on the Alp meadows. The staff is mainly non-Swiss. as the majority in Swiss tourist industry is, and to my experience they remember who you are even after two years. They even remember your favorite salad dressing, ´´franzosisch´´ French dressing if it is Pamela from Portugal.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  5 ปีที่แล้ว

      In normal conditions it is easy to walk over to the cliff walk, no special shoes needed. Once you are on it, all is protected with railings -- but not for those afraid of heights.

      Maybe you went up in the wrong direction, to the right side, following some others who went up that way. The direct route is not very steep -- slippery maybe, you're walking on snow. I have seen young and old make it no problem.

    I really like your videos, but a bit of constructive criticism - you don't always have to talk. You are trying to fill dead air, but it isn't necessary and it comes off as awkward.

    • @denniscallan
      @denniscallan  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks for the feedback. I do invest a lot of effort to create useful narrations that describe what is happening on screen and hold the viewer's attention, which I believe to be a strength of the programs, but yes, I could talk a bit less, at least take some longer pauses and let the visuals work. This would surely make my production easier and I will keep it in mind. Maybe I'm over-reacting to the 90% of YT travel shows that have no narration whatsoever, which is just not my style. I like to entertain and educate at the same time, which can be a real challenge.

    I have been there exactly 20x for skiing, its very beautiful, Titlis is often pretty crowded. I can imagine how calm Titlis is now without any chinese tourists
    I've heard that they planned to replace the 80 pers. gondolas with larger 100 pers gondolas and even plan to refurbish the titlis station in the future and make the weather station/tower accessible for visitors as a view point.
    If you got more time, go visit Fürenalp in Engelberg, its much calmer/lesser known and its a very scenic place. Ideal to hike or to go climbing

    So fun to this video of a place we go often as well! We live in Zurich and hike in this area a lot. Love that you're sharing it with the world. Gorgeous!

    Since this pandemic and the following lockdowns have occurred, TH-cam has been my saviour. I love anything Mountains and snow and have been very lucky in finding your video's. I want to explore Switzerland and didn't really know where to look for guidance regarding the locations of different places. I know now!! The series of films has helped me plan and given me an insight of the places that I may well have missed. Trouble is, now I want to go every where!! Thank You Mr Callan.
