    I agree with your point about the changing names being a kind of marketing tool - a bit like the Highway One models became the American Specials which then became the American Performer range (for example). They do change the specs a bit, but they are good at pricing things for a particular niche of the market. There are the guitars for those of us on a budget and then there are the Ultra-Super-Deluxe varieties for those who can afford them. I tend to prefer the old-school specs on Fenders anyway, and have owned (and sold) a number of American ones over the years. I now own a Mexican Strat and a Mexican Tele and I'm perfectly happy with them. I'm not in the market for one of these but they sound like they're good value for money. Great playing in the video, too.

    I think the positive story here is that Fender is reacting to being pushed by their competition. Brining back rosewood and rolling fretboard edges is evidence that they realize they cant be so complacent in the sub $1k tier. I think that’s a good thing.

    Didn’t get to test the Vintera II, but my local (crappy) Guitar Center had a Player II Tele in British racing green. It was gorgeous.
    A good neck is the most important thing to me in an electric guitar, and it put an Ultra Tele’s neck to shame in terms of comfort and fret quality.

  • @rudolphpyatt4833

    This version is very similar to mine, a 1991 Standard Telecaster (bought new in 1992) with a six saddle top loader bridge; C-shaped 9.5' radius neck; headstock mounted truss rod adjustment. The biggest difference, aside from the rosewood versus maple fretboard, is the pickups. My now vintage example has the stock ceramics, which do give the classic Tele sound, but are a bit warmer than those on the Player II, which I have tried in my local store. I like the new version, but it's not such a vast difference from the one I have that I felt the need to pounce on it. But I was definitely impressed with it.

    love the guitar, changed the pickups to Seymour Duncan Antiquities. Stock ones were fine, but the new ones seem to have a wider range of sounds. The chambers need to be shielded with copper tape if you have LED lights, shielded cable from pick up to switches and pots too. Otherwise, just a solid choice.

    I bought a Player II tele about a year ago. It's a great guitar - my preferred guitar now. My only complaint is that the neck pickup is too dark and muddled. I have to adjust my amp equalization to account for it, which is not practical. I plan to have a brighter, tighter after-market neck pickup installed sometime soon.

    The made-in-Mexico Standard series was significantly different from the Player/Player II Series. The Player has some features more in common with the American Standard (which became the American Series, and then renamed American Standard which evolved into the American Professional and now American Professional II). But with respect to price points; I believe Fender probably didn't want to incorporate the 2-post American Standard vibrato (in the case of the Strat) and a 22-fret neck out of concern that it could canalize sales of their American models.

  • @jfrankcarr

    There are big differences between the Player II and Vintera. The Player II has 22 medium-jumbo frets on a 9.5 Modern C with a 6 saddle modern bridge vs the Vintera having 21 narrow-tall frets on a 7.25 60's C or 50's U shape with a 3 saddle barrel bridge. If you like a modern feel and features, you won't like the Vintera's feel, and vice versa.

      Vintera II actually has ‘vintage tall’ frets. Much smaller than the ‘narrow tall’ frets on am pro 2 and others. So called ‘medium jumbo’ frets on the player don’t measure out to anything like medium jumbos. I was just at GC and played them all an even measured the frets. Nattow tall and medium jumbo frets on the am pro and player 2 I played were very similar. Vintage tall frets on American vintage and Vintera II were much narrower.

    I have two Player Strats and love the neck. I don't know if these are technically "rolled", but they certainly aren't sharp edges either. Hard to know if the Player II is basically the identical neck and the "rolled edges" thing is simply a marketing gimmick. Anyone have both and can say for sure if there is a noticeable difference? Rosewood, however, is nice to have back. Some of the Pau Ferro necks were hideously colored. Rosewood too has a more solid feel than Pau Ferro, I think.

  • @hartcons
    @hartcons 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

    I got a yellow one which I think was chambered ash. loved the look and weight. but the pickups seemed bland to me and the medium jumbo frets took some getting used to. took it back and discussed replacing the pickups for $300. also tried a beautiful dark green one with rosewood and it sounded a little better. eventually decided to get a used American professional II instead. it has a push-push switch to make a bit fatter sound and comes with a nice case. must say that guitar center is a better place to shop than it used to be. mine even had a used Gibson Les Paul custom shop.

    My first Tele is an MIM 2015 Standard. I put on a vintage bridge plate and brass saddles a while back, along with the ashtray. A few months ago I installed a Vega Trem II but the makeover has stalled for now. I'm going to replace the neck pickup with a CuNiFe WRHB and will use stacked pots and knobs, 250K for the bridge and 500K for the WRHB. Each pickup will have Vol & Tone. I don't know how it will work and sound because it's still requires guard and body routing.
    My other Tele is an MIM 2019 Vintera '50s Tele and I am happy with the way it is, but I did install a black guard. I like that it has all the '50s features (except for the poly finish haha) without spending reissue money. I like my Teles old school, the Standard is more '80s with a 2020's trem.
    I do like the new Player II, as I am not a fan of Pau Ferro, I choose maple over that every time.

    Is the Vintera II higher quality overall? I can kind of give or take specs. I like bigger frets, but for the most part, as long as a guitar is well set up and stays in tune, I can make it work. I prefer a tone that is too bright for most people. Very glassy and full of presence. Feeling like I should get a Vintera II. Any thoughts? No way to try either out where I live.

  • @andrewcampbell204

    I think the look/spec/price of the new player 2 series makes it pretty appealing. I’d would love to see a detailed comparison on standard, player, classic, baja, player 2. I must take issue with one point made in this video - If you believe higher price = better guitar, I have a bridge to sell you (its price is a little higher than the last bridge you bought from me, but I aged this one to look like a much older bridge).

    • @JackFossett

    Have you ever tried the Player Plus series? I'm asking because I'm in the process of building my own partscaster and I was considering a Tele Player plus neck for the project since I found one at a good price, but I'm hesitant because I tried the old player "1" series and I didn't really like the feel of the neck, sharp edges, sticky feeling and overall feel just not there.
    I was wondering how much difference there is between these 2 necks since with rolled edges and satin finish at least on paper the player plus series should addres two of my main complaints about the player 1 series.

    It has a different feel than the American standard. I don’t care for the medium tall frets on the professional II series. I could not vib with this guitar at all. It took me a while to figure out why I wasn’t able to feel at home on this guitar and it was the taller frets. I’m pretty sure the other neck specs were the same on both models.

  • @JW007100
    @JW007100 3 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

    So when you look at all the telecasters made and this one now shown, when you boil everything down it’s about the neck with the tuners. Everything else, the pickup, the bridge, switch, balance and volume pots can be purchased separately as genuine Fender parts. So the neck is what everyone is talking about. Right? Just build your own. Get a custom neck like from Warmoth and play. Resale later is the one benefit. But I never bought a guitar thinking about how much I was gonna make 5 years later. There are other things to do like building guitars and mixing, swapping components for the fun of it.

    I had a PFerro player tele and that guitar was utter crap. From the neck shape to the electronics and fit and finish....just a dud

    MY DAD: “Son…there are people who stay awake 24 hours a day trying to figure out how to get your money.”
    That sums up most of the entire guitar world. All marketing, man.

    The pickups in the Player II strats and teles are the same as the pickups in the original Player Series strats and teles which in my opinion are very good. Fender only changed the pickups in the Player II offset guitars. This is straight from Fender and not just my opinion so if you liked the original Player pickups but not the Player II pickups then maybe you need to get your ears checked...

    Shockingly broken bridge design. Only two screws to secure to the body resulting in these domed screws blocking the saddles on the E strings from intonating properly. Completely defective and terrible. They had a working design with the American Standard but they had to save a few pennies. Don't buy this garbage.

      @@grawman67 Theoretically, but they're never exactly level with the bridge and the worn screws can settle into the grooves in the much larger screws, too. It's just a bad lazy design begging for problems.

      @@iancurrie8844 That makes sense. Thanks. Looks like the entire bridge would really have to be replaced then. Which isn't a huge problem but it shouldn't have to be done for an $800 guitar

      It's a Fender, so everyone expects it to be at least average. You accept commissions that you know will be ok. You don't accept shady commissions. It's common sense.

      I get a commission on anything you buy through the link, not just this guitar. Which I very clearly stated.

      Ok. So say the guitar in your video is a POS. ZZOUNDS sells fender and makes a tone of money. Are they going to be happy with you calling Fender out. No. Are you going to damage your own income by pissing off zzounds by saying this guitar from their BIG supplier is a turd? 🤔 I'm skeptical that you don't have a sense of self preservation. This is what we call in the real world a conflict of interest. TH-cam is full of it. It's the world we live in. But it's decidedly unethical and positively not "HONEST"

      Actually Zzounds encourages me to be honest, and I told them I wouldn’t join the program without that freedom. It’s also the reputation I have with my channel. But thanks for the comments anyway.
