    More about spinal anesthesia: bit.ly/2syKgf8
    Meet Rama Jayanthi, MD: bit.ly/2sw1NnR
    Our anesthesiologists offer spinal anesthesia for select patients who are undergoing some types of surgeries. The procedure is typically offered as an alternative to general anesthesia (going to sleep) for patients up to two years old. This allows the patient to stay awake during the surgery, while being numbed and immobilized from the mid-chest down. A member of the anesthesia team will even play with your child while he or she is having surgery. Benefits of this approach are that a child's vital signs very stable and there is no need for anesthesiologists to use a breathing tube, general anesthetics or narcotics such as morphine. The spinal anesthesia also offers good post-surgery pain control and less recovery time. Go inside the operating room to learn how it's done.

    I had surgery for pyloric stenosis as an infant in 1983. My understanding is I was paralyzed but given no pain killers and was wide awake and feeling everything as they began to cut me open, man handle my intestines.
    Didn’t learn about this til now when I’m 40 years old and stress my entire life has destroyed my spine and turned me into an angry emotional wreck

      Yeah, I read a study somewhere on this subject, and apparently, the study authors found that babies given only paralytics for surgery had serious issues in adultedhood compared to babies who never had surgery. They study authors believed in was from the trauma. I cannot believe they used to think babies can't feel pain. Why do they cry then when they get a shot? Ridiculous!

      They gave me a spinal tap at birth but not my twin sister (even though our mother told the doctors no). I've had mood disorders, suicidal tendencies, back problems, and chronic pain ever since I can remember. For decades, I didn't understand and thought I was a mental case. I'm a very angry person at 47.

      How is it dangerous? The doctors who administer the spinal anesthesia are experts in safe administration of the anesthesia. Also spinal/local anesthesia is often a safer option than general anesthesia. With general anesthesia that baby would have had a breathing tube down its throat & be hooked up to life support machines(high amount of danger). Instead because the baby was awake due to a spinal anesthetic the baby was able to breathe on its own & no narcotics are required for pain management. The doctors in this video even said the risk levels for spinal anesthesia are low.

    So basically epidural

    • @helenahuang5286
      @helenahuang5286 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah basically the same. Except epidural involves placing a tube into the back( sort of like the IV in the hand/ arm vein, except its placed in the back ; anesthetics are then dripped from the medicine fluid bag through the tube into the back. Thats the best way i could describe it . The spinal block as shown in this video is just a syringe full of anesthetics injected into the spine and there is no tube. I’m no doctor, all I do is watch birth shows but thats what I learned from these shows about spinal anesthetics. Most of the time these forms of anesthetics are used in pregnant women. Epidural drips are mainly for controlling pain during natural childbirth; it helps them not feel the contractions as much. And spinal block is for c section. Spinal block is usually a lot stronger than an epidural.

      Yeah, I feel you on that one, but in this case the baby has never been put under so there's no saying how his body will react. You know that your body can tolerate it because it has before. There's also the psychological factor that baby has no clue. You sure are one tough cookie, I pray you won't have to go through any more surgeries, they're definitely not fun.

    Can this be done for any cardiac surgeries and how old of children will this work for before there is a window where surgery without general anesthesia is not feasible until adulthood or at least near adulthood?

    • @victormendoza7960
      @victormendoza7960 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Kasie ream it is only for abdominal down operations..if cardiac surgery it would be general anesthesia

    • @alexmcintyre8229
      @alexmcintyre8229 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Stent insertion, which is a cardiac procedure(an alternative to open heart surgery) is performed using local anesthesia. Nerve blocks are often used for surgery on the arm and local anesthesia is used for surgeries on the hand. Awake surgeries can be done above the bellybutton just as easily as they are performed below the bellybutton.

      I had my first spinal anaesthetic a few days ago. I was unable to move anything from the waist down for several hours afterwards. I imagine it would only be used for procedures on the lower body.

    • @MamaPo.SkyCoTL
      @MamaPo.SkyCoTL 4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      It’s a mixture of medications. There are neuromuscular blocking agents (stops you from moving) along with analgesic medications which stop pain. When injected in the spine at a certain junction, it essentially paralyzes and numbs the patient preventing movement. Some patients even get sedatives which relaxes you without going fully unconscious.

      We do it all the time in adults!
      A longstanding issue is that there can be a delay in the return of bladder & motor function which can delay discharge in day case patients.

    • @alexmcintyre8229
      @alexmcintyre8229 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It depends on the adult. Many adults prefer to be awake for their surgery. You can ask the doctor questions about how the surgery is going & the doctor will often give you updates & show you what they’re about to insert into you or show you what they’ve removed. I’ve heard that being awake for a surgery is like the patient playing an integral role in their treatment.
