Hi, just came across this beautiful video. Thanks a lot. While driving off-road through Namibia since 35 years, I've only see the Hoarusib river one time flooding like this. amazing. To be honest, there are no white sharks off coast Namibia! Anyway, great movie. Best Stefan

I’m grateful that you’re filling in the rest of Koakoland that I missed. You have courage for doing this alone esp., with a leaky Land Rover. Would have enjoyed sharing a pint or 3 to hear more of your travel experiences. I too appreciate the sounds of silence. Being in the Koakoland serves to make one feel humble to nature. Thank you for sharing.

Great episode - thanks for sharing. The volume of water was quite astonishing - hard to believe that it was from one nights rain up in the mountains. I guess when it rains in the Desert - it really rains!
You mentioned the silence - I think one related thing that comes through from your videos is the slow pace of things - lots of big empty spaces slows time down.

This area, and across into southern Angola is the harshest for UV strength/heat that I've ever experienced.
The sun bakes the ground rock hard, or it is actually just rock. So when water falls onto it, it can't sink into the ground, so it flows on top of it and forms this kind of water wall.
Only in the sandy parts of the river bed does it sink in somewhat, and in fact form underground rivers. This allows plants, people and animals to live there all year round.
The catchment area for the river is quite large - there is a large valley about 150km NE so I suspect that storm passed over that area and dumped into it - I could see the edge of the storm the night before.
Silence is lovely to hear :-)
I travel alone, long term rather than just on a few weeks holiday and not in a group, so I can set my own pace and dynamic.
Lovely in some ways, lonely in others, but that's why I have the camera lens to talk too ;-)

Thanks! Though that footage is from 2020 - whereas I assume you are in Namibia/Southern Africa now so your footage is more recent?
If so, your flood is newer than mine, so surely better! Or does flood water age like wine and get better with time?! (Its a whole new area for science to explore ;-)

Not in all places in Namibia, some places have not got a lot of rainfall at all this wet season.
Yes, it is quite seasonal and regional - the footage from this video is from 2020 though.

Darren, I'm watching from Rawsonvliie, South Africa. I've been to Namibia before but not your region. We went straight up to Swakopmund and Mile 72 on a fishing trip 1982.
Ah! I know it as I spent 7 weeks in Stellenbosch rewiring the Landy and drove to Rawsonville and back as the first test drive afterwards!

Glad the Landy didn't get stuck (or rather, swept away) in that! Any ideas what your raised air intake is? I'm looking for one like it that goes into the top of the wing instead of the side.
Yes, me too... I know a local guide who lost a vehicle in that river to a similar flood.
Mine was custom made by Foley's SV in the UK - cheap and cheerful - really just replacing the old military one with a welded piece of pipe - then silicon hoses inside, a standard LR filter on top.

I'm trying to understand where all that water comes from... i know there was a storm... but I'm still not understanding the beginning to end of this water.
Hi, if you follow this google maps link, you will see a wide open sandy plain up near the town on Opuwo, about 150km NE from Purros. You can see all of the veins/wrinkles on the map which are dry river beds.
Scroll slowly to the left and follow the main river bed all the way down to Purros. Its a huge area, with large mountains.
When it rains in any of that area, its always a storm with heavy rain and all of the water runs to this one main river, which then floods down to Purros, and then into the ocean... does that make sense?

I feel like I need to get into nature for a few months to reset - nature, animals, down-to-earth people. Learn self-sustainability, bushcraft, that kind of thing... no technology.

All of the camera batteries ran flat, so I didn't get any shots of getting pulled out which was unfortunate (I bought more batteries later :)
