⚓️Ship Edmund Fitzgerald's Last Dock! Superior, WI

  • The 729-foot Edmund Fitzgerald’s last dock was in Superior, Wisconsin. This video provides an up close live tour of Dock #1 where the famous ship loaded and departed. Edmund Fitzgerald left Superior, Wisconsin, at 2:15 p.m. on the afternoon of November 9, 1975, under the command of Captain Ernest M. McSorley.
    I intentionally didn't provide videos to chose from or say my typical closing phrases promoting this channel at the end. I wanted this video to be used for educational purposes only.
    I thought about waiting until the anniversary to post this video. However, what put me over the edge is seeing numerous credible publications including the Duluth News Tribune (main news source in Duluth, MN) and other national maritime news sources publish videos and stories all throughout the year about the Edmund Fitzgerald. A few TH-cam channels have FOOLISH rules that prevent people from discussing the Fitz until the anniversary. Whoever implemented that exaggerated rule can keep it on their channel! The best way to honor these sailors is to keep the story ALIVE and tell it accurately anytime a person wants to learn more. Should we wait until the anniversary of any historic event to talk about it? Absolutely NOT! When people want to be EDUCATED it CAN and SHOULD be done anytime, not one day annually.
    Here’s an example of a story a few months ago about the Fitz from the Duluth News Tribune, not during the anniversary. www.duluthnews...

    Thanks for keeping the Fitz alive with this one of a kind viewpoint into her memory. Often times, some people think it is taboo to speak of the lost, but I feel we must remember for future generations, less the mistakes of the past are repeated. We cherish all the mariners who have gone this way before us and offer only respect and remembrance. Never forget the Edmund Fitzgerald.

    I believe Gordon Lightfoot's tribute to the Edmund Fitzgerald is a haunting story of the shipwreck that affected so many people. The crew and captain's families and friends, the legacy of this ship, and the power of Lake Superior. All of these combined will forever leave a mark in history. Thanks for this very unique video Mike. I too have always been captivated by the tragedy of the Edmund Fitzgerald. Isn't there a museum dedicated to the Fitz there in Duluth? I remember getting chills when I realized a dream in visiting the Great Lakes Shipwreck museum in White Fish Point where we saw the wrecked lifeboat from the Fitz and also the ship's bell. The song has always been a favorite of mine. May those souls rest in peace. Another tragic story of loss on the Great Lakes is the story of the Christmas Tree ship in 1912. The Rouse Simmons sunk in a violent storm in Lake Michigan on November 23. It was carrying a cargo of Christmas trees to Chicago. Fascinating story, especially of how the Schuenemann family took over the business after such great loss to keep the captain's legacy alive. God bless!

    Somehow I'd missed that The Fitz had left Superior on her last voyage! When we visited the other end of Lake Superior at Sault Ste Marie, we went to the Museum Ship Valley Camp. That was quite an experience - if you haven't gone there, you should! This 550 foot retired cargo ship is now a 20,000 square foot museum full of Great Lakes shipping history. The Edmund Fitzgerald exhibit has at least one lifeboat from the Fitz. They have a big room dedicated to the ship and shipwreck. It's very nicely and respectfully done and definitely worth a visit in addition to all of the other exhibits on the ship. It left an impact on me and we were there 8 years ago! The Soo Locks are also really neat to watch.

When the song came out in 76, everyone in Chicagoland knew all the words. It played on AM radio at least once an hour. At the bar I worked at, Durty Nellies Irish Pub, all the patrons and staff sang it loud when it played on the jukebox. Especially “Fellas, it’s been good to know ya!”

    I've explored this place probably hundreds of times since me and my buddies found it in middle school. We used to go as a big group on the last day of school, it was great. It's a super solid structure for how old it is, the wood stairs going down the sides can be a little sketchy, one broke on a buddy. The view on top of the arch is INSANE. I'm sure they don't want you on the property, but everyone who lives around here knows how to enter it without being caught. Shoot I've walked through the front gate a couple times lol.

    Great little video Mike, I’ve been so interested in the Great Lakes and the ships the sail them for years now, and it’s my goal one day to take a trip up there and see a few of these landmarks where the Fitz resided. And if I’m lucky, get the chance to see the other most historical ship for the Great Lakes, the Arthur M Anderson. Love the video man, can’t wait for the next!

    Greetings Mike. The Fitz had a number of nicknames as she was the Queen of the Lakes at the time. One was the "Toledo Express" because she made so many coal runs from Duluth to the automated coal docks on the Maumee River in Toledo. My family started boating at TYC in 1966, which is directly across from the coal docks (we often had to swab the coal dust off the decks when the wind blew from the south). We would see the Fitz all the time during the late 60's in Toledo..... little did any of us know the fate that would befall her.

      Hey Jon. My Mom was born and raised in Toledo. When I boated with my parents we would routinely see the Fitz. We were based in the Toledo area for several seasons at Anchor Point Marina. My Grandparents docked at TYC and lived in nearby Perrysburg. My family lived in Columbus during those times.

    Hey Mike...I first heard of the Edmond Fitzgerald fate or saga via Gordan Lightfoot's hit song. The first 'line' out of Gordan's song that got my attention was "T'was the witch of November come stealin" - spooky as all get out because I recalled the 'dare as a young lad to sleep out overnight in a graveyard on Halloween night...the next day being November 1. Being I enjoy cooking so much...this line also hooked me 'When suppertime came, the old cook came on deck sayin' "Fellas, it's too rough to feed ya." At seven PM, a main hatchway caved in, he said "Fellas, it's been good to know ya." Thanks for giving additional context to Gordan's song! Cheers...

    What decides whether the Captain chooses to enter through the Duluth pier or the Superior channel?

    • @vibewithmike
      @vibewithmike  ปีที่แล้ว

      I think it depends on which processing facility they will be going to to either load or unload? Also ship traffic can make a difference, if other vessels are coming through Duluth, some might go through Superior and then they work their way around back to Duluth through the inner channel.
