Namaskar dear Michael, only to tell you how grateful I am for your tirelessly repeating every teaching of Bhagavan Ramana. The more we practice, the more things we once thought to be grand and important lose their intensity. Self-attentiveness gradually relieves us from the burdens we carry on our heads.
My experience while listening to various teachers like, krishnamurthy, Alan Watts, Samneriji Jaisara, Moji,Papaji, Nisargdutta, Sufi saints,The kabira, The Buddha are teaching one and the same thing. Truth is one not many.

Michael rightly states that "words" can confuse us if we don't focus on the reality of the words. "I Am" in Nisargadatta 's teaching conflates both the "rope" AND the " snake" in one phrase. " I AM" is the first delusion, YET it is also the route back to "Awareness" . "Consciousness" is the term Nisargadatta uses for Michael's expression " adjunct awareness" of the Ego, awareness of things other than oneself. The KEY agreement between Nisargadatta and Ramana 's "terminology" is to become aware of "I AM", I.e. for Ramana, focus carefully on the "Snake" (I.e. The " I AM" initially on our path seems to be adjunct awareness) and as our self inquiry " progresses" we come to see that the snake is actually a " rope"- I.e. we come to see ourselves as we actually are. In exactly the same way, Nisargadatta urges that we bring our awareness to the " I AM" ( initially the "snake") until we come to see ourselves to be the " light before consciousness" I.e. pure awareness or the " rope" in Ramana's metaphor.
What brought on Bhagavan's fear of death at that young age? My understanding is that he asked himself 'what dies?', but that was after the fear came and is different to self-enquiry.
Michael's answer is far too complicated, everything is really very simple - I am who I am..and I don't need to 'know' who I am. That is the beauty of this fact..
Surely Self Knowledge requires a " means of knowledge" just as ego based knowledge always requires a means of knowledge? Otherwise what is the point of Ramana's teachings , etc?

Lani is right. Nissrgdatta said you can be aware while you ate sleeping.
You can be aware in sleep. Michel is not clear in this case. Ramana Maharshi said absolutely equal to Nisargdutta.
