I own a 97 Infiniti I30 (4th Gen Maxima) Love the thing 201k miles and rock solid. I have never felt the need to replace her. The Vq30de and its variants are solid engines
I got one as my first car in 2020 for $1000. Had nearly 300k miles and the rpm and temp gauge never worked. Drove it for 6 months and as a 17 year old of course I put it through hell. It still held up lol. Might be grabbing a 2003 here soon thankfully
I love this year maxima as well I've own mines last 5 years .. easy to maintain I only run premium gas . Only modifications I've done is custom exhaust and injen full cold air intake with hydro shield .. and swapped interior from leather to cloth no cuts and tears ... runs like a top with 300k I maintain it myself fluids ...motor mounts.. control arms .. oem water pump etc love this gen Maxima's👍🏾
My rule of thumb is Check it, if its not black and still got a pink tint, save the old fluid and risk changing it, you never know, could always syphon out half the fluid and add that amount of fresh back repeatedly until its clean. This way you’re not getting all that friction material from the bottom so it can help the car shift as needed.
Maxima's are awesome. I had a 1999 manual that went close to 400K miles before it literally started to fall apart. I think you are right with that 1 fix to clear all codes. You can sneeze on the older Maxima's and it will throw a code and drive perfectly fine. Keep us updated on the Maxima. Definitely a steal if you plan to flip it.
I got a 2k maxima with over 400k, original engine and transmission, and power steering pump, everything else mechanically is new or replaced within my time of ownership
TPS and Cam Position Sensor and crank sensor can cause shift issues. Trans wants to shift at optimum rpm range. Had an 02 Infiniti I35 clunkingly (is that even a word?) shift 1st to 2nd from a bad cam sensor. Changed the Cam sensors* and all was right.
Love that year Maxima. I had a 2000 and 1987 Maximas. Biggest problem I had with the 2000 was Ingnition coils. Go ahead a swap the TPS. never had a problem with the transmission.
The transmission itself never has a problem, the transmission sensors are what fail over time. It’s the magnets specifically in the sensors like the speed sensors that start acting up. But if the transmission had a problem, there would be issues downshifting and stopping the car. But one awesome thing about these model Maximas is that you can drive the car slowly even with a bad transmission. Most of the other cars by different makers, you can’t drive with a bad transmission.
@@Fwatson757 had an ‘02 with 245k on it when the trans started acting up. I think it was the sensors, dealership said needs new trans. Ended up driving many 12hr trips before I sold it about a year later. It ended up not going into 4th but I was able to keep it going all that time
My first thought on the Maxima was the throttle position sensor. Had a Dodge years ago, ran great then started to have the same problem. It was just the TPS, easy fix. I would start with the TPS, reset the codes, drive it again, see what else pops up, fix that. I still think there’s hope.
I had one of these in the Infiniti format as the i30, it was an amazing car, it had a blown head gasket but for free I didn’t complain, lived long enough for me to learn to drive on it till I upgraded to an 05 Mazda 6 Edit: oh and a word of caution un plug the hydraulic motor mounts, they are unregulated and directly connected to the ECU and when the motor mount goes bad 8 times outta 10 the ECU gets burned out along with it.
Check the throttle body also, if they're really dirty it can make a car run really bad too, but I had a buick century with a bad throttle position sensor and it shifted real hard 1st to 2nd gear. Replaced the throttle position sensor and problem solved, also ran seafoam through a full tank of gas and cleaned the throttle body. Ran like new afterwards.
This was my favorite Maxima. Also sold off as the Infiniti I30 with more bells and whistles. Very nice car. Wish the owner took better care of this one.
Found this video late, but love the 2001 Maxima. Got mine for $300 and spent less than it blue books for to repair it. It was a nightmare trying to figure out what it needed though! Haha! Mine has been a great car for me regardless of the work. Plus I got lucky with the interior, still nice for the age and never any cigarette smoke inside. The peeling clear coat is annoying though.
Had a 2000 version of this car, what a great car this was, they did have maf problems. These also turned into rust buckets, didn’t do well with road salt here in the Midwest.
I would definitely look into that throttle position sensor that could be the main cause of it all and like you said if it fixes it it's a score all day long
It's gonna be interesting to see what you find with this one. I've got a '98 UKDM Maxima, which is same as Infiniti I30 that I've owned for 10 years. Bought it with just under 56k miles - now has just under 93k miles - and it is very reliable. Other than usual maintenance items, I've only replaced the alternator and transmission computer in this time. My brother has owned his '95 JDM Cefiro with the 2 liter engine the past 15-16 years and even though it doesn't look that great anymore, it just keeps going and going.
I really hope it's just a TPS. It'll only take 5 minutes to change. While you're at it, it may also be worth popping out the passenger fender. It's too bad someone threw away a car if it was only a faulty TPS!
Wish I could find one for a price like that I've had about 5 Maximas four were 95s and one was a 00 they are great cars and super reliable and cheap to maintain
These 5th gen Maximas are safe, reliable cars as long as they're taken care of. Sensors go bad all the time and light up the dash, but it's rare to see the actual basic parts go bad; I can't remember the last time the o2 sensor worked in mine. Frame and rear fender rust can be a problem with these too. The response time is quick though so they're very safe for highway driving.
Adding floor mats should solve all the problems. You may want to look at spark plugs for misfire. Does your scanner tell you which cylinder was misfiring? I agree that throttle position sensor should be changed or cleaned first. Then Cam position sensor. Look at trans. oil to see if low or needs to be changed. Worn tires can give wobble on steering wheel. May also need O2 sensor. Graph the O2 sensor with your scanner for sine wave.
I had that same issue on my Infiniti M30 (Nissan Leopard). It turned out to be the automatic transmission control solenoid (Nissan 31940-41X13). It was a little older, but same drive train and miles. As I recall the issue began right at 200,000 miles. By the way, it also went through power steering high pressure hoses about every 30,000 miles.
I'm thinking a couple things that seem to common on them.. I would change the spark plugs and install OEM coil packs. New crank position sensors, a new throttle body and a new fuel pump. Just check the fuse for the a/c first, since it's full. Since it's one of the computer control ones, the controller may be bad. But those things , half a day work, it's going.. Those things were probably never updated in that car.
Hey Man, Love the content. Regarding your AC, the system appears to have way to much r134 in it. Reduce the refrigerant level until it is on the green on your gauge and it should be start cooling, pending everything is in order.
His accurate reading actually was when he was pressing the trigger down and the gauge instantly went to zero. With freon in it, and the trigger pressed down..while the compressor runs is when it should show green. Not when the gauge is connected with the trigger not pressed. That gives an inaccurate reading. If he had put real gauges on it and opened the knobs, he would have gotten that 0 reading that he was getting when he was pressing the trigger on his canister in this video. A lot of people make this mistake and think their system is overcharged when in fact they aren't using it correctly. I repeat..you must connect the gauge, then depress the trigger to see your system's pressure reading with these types of gauges.
I own a 2001 Max with the 5spd. Mine ended up having a cylinder mis and also the primary ignition code..... It was both caused by a faulty coil on mine.... Might be one of the issues. But once you get them running good, theyre great cars. plenty of power, it handles traffic with ease. I love it but I want to upgrade to something newer. Really wanted to keep it as a project to build but I can't afford insurance on both rn. It only has 117k on it though.
@@ferrari250lm 3800 just to get what i put into it.... It has new tinted headlights and fog lights, drilled and slotted r1 concpets with ceramics, pretty much new full sounds system, cool little shifter knob lol. i paid 3200 and put about 1500 into it. The clutch is still solid, its a softer clutch which makes for a smooth engagement.
I personally despise working on Nissan V engines, especially for FWD. Everything is so shoehorned-in and cramped. I learned with the VG30DE how much I dislike working on them. Unnecessary complication and points of failure for not a lot of power gain relative to size and weight. If it's a Nissan with a KA24DE in it, I'm set. I've driven those motors well into the red and had them hold up. I much prefer timing chain to timing belts, and iron blocks are more robust at the expense of weight, but worth it for longevity. Plus they're so simple to work on and diagnose. My $550 Xterra 2.4L ran like that when I got it: it needed O2 upstream and upstream cat from the leaking valve covers, and the MAF sensor also went out right after I got it. Tried using cheap China parts and ended up in the same bind a couple months later. Replaced everything with factory Hitachi/Bosch components (as well as Fel-Pro gasket set) and no issues since. Doesn't matter if it's -5F or 105F outside: starts every time on the first try. It also passed Colorado emissions on first try once the rusted-in-half PCV valve and plugged upstream cat were replaced. Still, I liked the look of these Maximas with the rounded taillights, but if I had to get a Maxima for myself it would be the late 90's model like Tavarish had.
I have owned 2 of these. I currently have a 2000 max that I paid $400 for, so heres some advice: The iacv is on the bottom of the throttle body. They commonly go bad on these and they can take out the ecu. Only replace it with the hitachi part. These also eat coilpacks. Only replace with the hitachi or oem hanshin coils. And I bet the precat is stopped up or damaged also. It was also a common issue on these.
Had an 03 with 3.5L super fast car First I would clean the throttle body then replace spark plugs and see what happens and it wouldn't hurt to flush out the transmission fluid.
here's the thing my dad has a Nissan patrol 2003 and it runs horrible it stalls and it doesn't want to shift but when we changed the fuel filter it runs beautifully.
I fixed one not to long ago that wouldent shift and changed the tps sensor amd it fixed it bc it wouldent idle or shit in some gears cant wait to see more content on this have a good day
That Maxima is an easy fix. Very reliable car. This make me miss my 1996 Max😃. Those VQ Engines are pretty reliable, and they're driven by timing chain. The sensors, alternator, and and the rear valve cover gasket is a pain in the rear.
Randy you might have to hold the gas pedal a little after a dead battery to set the tps or iac. My jeep did the same exact thing after a dead battery and I felt the same way as you do now til I googled it and I was finally able to get it started after I did that trick and it stayed running you have to hold it for a about a minute or so.
Randy I bought a Mustang GT with a slipping trans. Thought it was toast but I tried some Lucus trans treatment and it shifts great now.. It has lasted and not slipped at all.
had one, 2000 nissan maxima gxe or gls. it is a timing chain engine, also VTVC was on the engine cover (missing on yours). i bought mine for 800 and had a p0430 code since 7k by the time i donated i had it fixed at 210k. guess what the problem was and 3 shops never found it and yes the parts cannon fired multiple times nothing stuck.... times up bank 2 fuel rail was clogged it ran on 3 cylinders for 200k estimated
I love your channel. I do wish we got updates on the cars. I watched this one today and the 85 Honda one 2 days ago. Updates at the end of the video or another video on the past vehicles would be cool.
Looks like you had your first passenger at 19:12 😀 Hope the TPS resolves some of the issues. I had a 99 I30 (same as a Maxima) & I removed the sensors & soaked the tip of the o2 sensors in small pie tray in some Chevron Techron fuel system cleaner overnight & brushed them off with a wire brush the next morning. I cleared the codes & the o2 codes didn’t come back for the remainder of my ownership which was like 2 more years. I had to do that to pass CA emissions as it’s an automatic failure if your CEL is on.
Got my ‘03 a while back for 700. The previous owner just didn’t check the gaps for the spark plugs. It might be a “grandma” car but she’s nostalgic for me.
Unplug all sensors, then unplug ur battery for 20 seconds, n it should clear all error. Ur engine lights should be O2 sensor and air flow sensors needed to be replaced
My buddy has a 2017 Nissan frontier pickup truck nismo off-road package and he is experiencing the same thing where everything's driving normal and then all the sudden he doesn't have third gear he's only got first and second when you manually shift it and scan the codes and that's exactly what it brings up that needs replacing and just relearn it the throttle relearn and it should start working back to normal
Your right Randy, you did score. A few tweaks and clear some codes and you should be fine. If they come back then you have to delve a little deeper. Good luck brother!!! Hoping you do a video soon on the 300 😁!!!
Hey Randy , I feel you got a good score on that thing bcos it needs the TPS , plus a couple of other sensors and fresh tune could brighten it up to excellent running condition , and little repaint would do it good and be superb for some good individual or family . But on the other hand I have a doubt , I have a 2007 Mitsubishi lancer which has a confusing problem , it was given in complete engine rebuild a head gasket replacement which after that it's been smooth but the transmission has gone into some issue where after just starting and driving it , it jerks and goes all kind of confused and then no proper gear changes with neutral gear light flashing , I have no clue , I feel it's some sensors / electronics issue but I don't know , if any help or suggestions you have I would greatly appreciate it , anyway stay safe , God bless . Thank you for all the informative and entertaining content.
My I30 did the same thing. Think the mass airflow sensor was bad. Cold starts, had to feed it gas. After that, it ran all day. Excellent engine, like the 4 cylinder SR20DE, but sensors can be an issue.
My friend it's not your transmission it is your MAF sensor that is no good, symptoms is like a slipping transmission. I still own my 2000 Maxima with 225K miles and she run likes a champ!
I think the airflow sensor is bad... it can gives a lot of other failures... Even cleaning can solve sometimes. Throttle pos sensor is also one as you said yourself! These thing make transmissions nuts!
I replaced the throttle position sensor on my 1996 Nissan altima it had the KDE 24 motor reliability is good I drove it 5 times to Vegas and back it was shaking like crazy i though it was a transmission issue but it wasn't it was the sensor after replaced it ran forever
I don’t think that has a bad transmission they didn’t have a lot of transmission problems then I would try replacing the throttle position sensor and a tune plugs coils I think that would help
Had one just like it & a 1988 Max, enjoyed both. Good cars IMO & It's worth a trans if need be. That would make someone a decent car with a little work. It's a max, them cars have a big following & should due fairly good on content🤞🎬🚘👍
i dont think a tps will cause a dead misfire like that. it will make it not choke up right and stall on cold starts and such but usually a misfire is something else. not saying it wont cause it just not as common. try driving it fully warm see if it dead misses then you may see thats the culprit. you can also check the voltage range on a tps with volt meter. now the iac or 02 commonly cause a misfire.
I'd unplug that sensor and plug it back in. Never know it might clear it. I've done that on a few of the older ones I've owned.
As cheap and easy it is to do batter off just ti change it only takes 5 mims
😂😂

My favorite Maxima! Too bad after 42 years, Nissan just killed off the nameplate.
That's when maxima and nissans lasts and were bulletproof and didnt use that junky cvt until 04 and newer is where nissan just lost it and sucks
Just like the Avalon. Nissan probably saw the writing on the wall and now probably only is putting out EVs now.

I would replace the mass air flow sensor on the Maxima. They tend to go bad.
I was thinking the same-typical symptom when they go out. Start and die immediately.
The sight unseen "will run" (& hopefully drive) videos are my new favourite! Great work Randy, keep it up!

His accurate reading actually was when he was pressing the trigger down and the gauge instantly went to zero. My jeep did the same exact thing after a dead battery and I felt the same way as you do now til I googled it and I was finally able to get it started after I did that trick and it stayed running you have to hold it for a about a minute or so.
The Nissan deserves a chance
I had an '01 Maxima. LOVED IT!
Had several over many years, get car...one big flaw is the O2 Sensors, always replacing them
I love your channel.
Love these, I had 2. A 2003, and a 2000. Just sold that 2003 like 2 weeks ago.
The crank and camshaft sensors will make it run rough as well...definitely replace those
Got my ‘03 a while back for 700. The previous owner just didn’t check the gaps for the spark plugs. It might be a “grandma” car but she’s nostalgic for me.
A granny car with 255hp lol
Unplug all sensors, then unplug ur battery for 20 seconds, n it should clear all error. Ur engine lights should be O2 sensor and air flow sensors needed to be replaced
“Oouuu Good Lord !” Jajaja 😝 Randy your commentary never gets old . Keep bringing the Vids
I had to google it myself! All Nissan VQ engines have timing chains!
You are really good at working on cars Randy! I have watched all your new projects so far, and they are all amazing!!
Have a 5 speed with 150k.. Best car EVER
Def check the IACV and usually if it’s bad that blows the ecu too. Just dealt with this problem on my 01 maxima.
Randy that year Maxima is know for Mass airflow unit going bad . And a low pressure hose line pump leaking. Speed sensor may be a concern
Always loved the Maxima. I love my 4th gen maxima and 4th gen Sentra!
The transmission might just need a fluid change hopefully
Gotta check IACV, ECM, MAF, TPS most of the low idle problems on these revolve around that. I have had my 01 AE for a couple years
Throw a TPS in it. If that doesn't work maybe do a JY video for a transmission! they sell for like $200
also got a g37s coupe done put a hole lot of money and time in and a g35 coupe I got it from iaa only 19 man god is good truly blessed
I remember the 1985 Maxima’s!!! I’ve always wanted one
Replace tps and change upper intake gasket. That will take care of the stalling and shifting issues
Clean the Mas Air Flow Sensor in the throttle body clean it with cloths, Q tips and Methylhydrate.
Try some CATACLEAN instead of spending money on a catalytic converter (or does it have two?), and then the TPS sensor should be a quick fix.
I have an 01 Maxima I bought with 175XXX miles. I currently have 212XXX miles with no major engine or transmission issues.
I've got the Cefiro version with the 3.0. Same car. 214,000 miles. My transmission needs to warm up in 2nd gear before I can take off in drive.
I think the airflow sensor is bad... it can gives a lot of other failures... Even cleaning can solve sometimes. Throttle pos sensor is also one as you said yourself! These thing make transmissions nuts!
Throw some parts on it it may just fix it. Put a good charged battery too, that could cause issues. I like these beater vids.
Nice 👍 on finding out the problem. Sweet. Keep up the great work.
Clean the MAF and trottle body with carb cleaner....should work
Had one just like it & a 1988 Max, enjoyed both. Good cars IMO & It's worth a trans if need be. That would make someone a decent car with a little work. It's a max, them cars have a big following & should due fairly good on content🤞🎬🚘👍
I loved that generation remember when they came out i wanted one really bad
The cam shaft position sensor also seems bad on nissans also clean the throttle body, if you change or clean that MAF sensor
i dont think a tps will cause a dead misfire like that. it will make it not choke up right and stall on cold starts and such but usually a misfire is something else. not saying it wont cause it just not as common. try driving it fully warm see if it dead misses then you may see thats the culprit. you can also check the voltage range on a tps with volt meter. now the iac or 02 commonly cause a misfire.
Mass airflow sensor can make it die out like that too. Happened to my 96 maxima
An over or under-charging alternator can put the car into limp mode and lock up the transmission in gear
When the coil packs are that bad you got a 2-foot it so it doesn't die out I used to have to 2 ft mine at every stoplight LOL
That accord is a great car.
That Maxima are european cars too. I love this repair.
I have watched two of your videos and neither one of them finishes the job leaving us hanging .
