My grandad used to work for Brighton busses in Lewis road. I can remember going with him as a small child to the depot and taking a single decker through the bus wash. After that we went into the canteen for lunch and a chat with the other drivers. Precious memories ❤.
Hello Fuzz as an ex-bus driver I drove Leyland Atlanteans (Charles Roe) every day, we then drove MCWs and Later Scanias, comfort and safety of passengers at all times.
I truly envy you, I'm 64 and have loved Buses all my life. I have a large collection of model buses', however my dream has always been to drive one. That's a grand old lady you have there. Best wishes.
Lovely video Fuzz - my dad (God bless him) drove for Stratford Blue in the late 40's, 50's and sixties. He was an excellent driver and was able to negotiate snowy roads in the winter with aplomb. Lots of fond memories, and your lovely video brought back memories of him - thanks.
That bus reminds me of the ones that used to run out of Digbeth bus station in Birmingham before we moved to Lancaster in the 70's when you had Lancaster city buses and Ribble buses. Nice one.
West Milands Travel apart from Midland Red were the only buses seen around Birmingham which were the same Home and Away kit of Birmingham City Football Club. As a teenager Ticket Tugging running upstairs with a continuous streamer of ticket and then opening the emergency rear door with silver foil wrapped around card from old cigarette packets to stop the alarm being engaged . I Loved The 1980`s !
Hey Fuzz, I love the old Fleetline, I passed my test in one of those over 30 years ago at Perry Parr garage. We never drove them so gently in service on the Bristol Road though! I hope you and the family are all well.
High Bridge Decker 14'6" then Fuzz not a Low Bridge Decker 13'8". Started driving Bristol VR deckers RE dual purpose no power steering wth both electronic shift and air shift. Passed my test on a Leyland PD2 crash box. I retired in January and what a change in bus design in the last 36 years. Great to watch you drive the old girl
Excellent Fuzz …… I’m sure we all agree with you on wanting a bus …. I’ve driven the Irizar7 all fully comfort reliant driver equipment….. that clip shows though that you’ve gotta drive an oldie …. And You’d certainly know it’s the end of the day ….. great vid thank you Sssirrr🫡🫵👏👏🤩
Growing old is compulsory, growing up is optional. Keep on playing whatever takes your fancy (cars, buses, lorries, boats, planes, trains, full size or model)
Most bus drivers chuck their passengers all over the bus in my very limited experience on the things. However I came across a lady bus driver driving an open top bus in Scarborough and she proved to me it can be done nicely 👌. Great little film, cheers 👍
6:21 I have a number of bus models mainly in RoadCar livery, so I still like playing buses too! lol😂 I've got an East Lancs Vyking in the RoadCar Connect 6 livery from 2001, an MCW Metrobus in standard RoadCar livery, a Wright Axcess Scania in the RoadCar Connect 6 livery from 1999, a Leyland Leopard, again in standard RoadCar livery and a Leyland National in the similar looking Yorkshire Terrier livery, which is RoadCar's sister company as it was another Yorkshire Traction Group owned company, but a number of RoadCar's Leyland Nationals did bear the Yorkshire Terrier livery when they got transferred to them though.
When a student in Birmingham we had the Fleetlines and Metroboxes. We always preferred the Fleetline, especially if it was running empty to Hockley garage It was a guaranteed fast ride!
Brings back memories the travel WM buses in the 70 s 80s in Walsall, Wolverhampton, Birmingham & West Bromwich. I remember catching the 341 from Walsall to Willenhall
If my knowledge is correct you are a week younger than me, which means you have reached a milestone birthday in the last few days. I'm glad to see you haven't grown up. That bus takes me back to my school days. I remember th school bus fare shot up from 5p to 15p in one week and all the school kids protested so much the bus drivers went on strike. Happy days. 1 question, is that power steering or armstrong steering.
Brilliant Fuzz! Have been allowed to drive Fleetlines, an Atlantean, Bristol VRT and even a Dennis Dart all of road. Rally sites and our local bus depot. Also a crash gearbox Bristol KSW with a little help!
Excellent video. I'm a non driver, but I remember we had some similar ex WMPTE Fleetlines at my ex employers at Midland Fox. In the local area GK Kinch and British Shoe Corporation had some too around that time. Greetings from over here in France!
I have a 1975 Daimler(Leyland) Fleetline with flat windscreen which was a real pane because of the headlights of oncoming cars got reflected back, they then went to a curved windscreen.
I remember going into town on buses like that in the 70s-80s. When I heard the sound it took me right back. I can still picture the square tickets with the half circle cut out at the top strewn over the floor and fag ends upstairs. Oh, and if you sat at the front upstairs, when the bus went around a corner there would be a ball bearing run through the hollow handrail.
Nothing wrong with being a bit childish. Your enthusiasm really comes through. Nice to see the bus being driven properly. Not many drivers did when in service.
I drove one of these buses after passing my PSV license for East Yorkshire Motors around Hull. I notice that there is a fare box for the passengers money. These buses would skid in the wet on a banana skin. Good old days.
Had to smile when Fuzz said that the important thing is the comfort of the passengers. Try telling that to nxbus drivers, I've almost been on the floor or through the front window more than once and at 70 years old and with arthritis that's no fun. Great vid though
Hi Fuzz mate,i loved your video on your bus,it was great seeing it in action,i recently watched that episode of Shed and buried where you bought that Blue Coach, that was also very smart,i'am lucky i get to play buses everyday as i drive them for a living in london, have driven RMs aswell,MCW,Volvos,Dennis,Wrights,Daf the lot,but my all time favourite is the MCW.keep up the good work mate cheers.
A friend owns seven buses(was nine). Only one in the road,1961 Atlantean "Earl Howe",ex Devon General. Took thirty five from near Yeovil to Weymouth, last week.
Never understood why i would suffer with travel sickness on the corporation buses, but never on Midland Red. If i was travelling on that bus, i'd be standing next to Fuzz with the door open. Great video, regardless of the memories, thanks Fuzz.
I've never had any involvement in buses but I too want a double decker as a toy, preferable a TWM MCW metrobus. Loved them as a child. Think it is the unique sounds they make 😂
Get someone to let you have a good, long drive of the best bus ever Fuzz, a Routemaster. We used to start in auto 2nd (which is the same position as 4th), push the gear lever to 3rd when it changed up, get the most out of that then pull it back to 4th. Leaving it in auto only it would change into top too early. Of course with the wheels up front, point them around the corner and the rest would follow without having to worry about the overhang.
Pleased to see you don't slam the gears through. I'm convinced that why a lot of my former colleagues have bad backs. A little rev between downward changes as well. It was quicker as well as no gear slip. I also loved the air box leopards & atlanteans that we had on Trent
Does the bus have power steering. Also, can you talk about how the semi automatic gear box with its short gear stick.? My father was a bus driver in Hong Kong in 1950 to 1990s. We have Leyland fleetline double decker buses then Thank you so much.
A good driver (which I'm sure your father was!) can make the smoothest changes possible with the pneumocyclic semi-automatic gearchange......but a bad driver can make the bus - and the passengers literally jump up and down!
I wish you could have explained the gear shift mechanism. I remember the same gear selector on Bristols and that was a pre-selector so you could just whack through the gears and each time you lifted off it would engage the next gear. Similarly on the Leyland Nationals I remember drivers just keeping their foot flat to the floor while shifiting and you would get a rev-out while it passed through neutral. So I am not sure what sort of gear set up this is where you have to match revs on the shifting in what appears to be a semi-auto.
I remember being in a WMPTE Fleetline hitting the trees going down Wake Green Road - but I think it was probably only the tips of the branches; nevertheless, they didn’t half make a noise…
Great stuff Fuzz. Next time I see you drumming I will have to pop over to say hi. ps if you and Tim are bored I have a XK 140 fhc that needs a total restoration
Great video! I was a bus & coach driver too. BTW did SOS eventually turn into Top Gear? Looked like it was headed in that direction. Shame if it did, SOS was my all time favourite car prog.
Wow, I did my apprenticeship as a mechanic working on Atlantans and Bristol VR and yeah did every job possible on those from setting up the indicators that they went off after 20 seconds to riveting brake bands on gearbox brakes 🤦♂️ lol
I remember when i passed my PSV 35 years ago..i was told to remember that i am carrying the most Precious load in the world ..other peoples kids and Parents etc . I've retired now due to Ill Health
When I drove a bus in service with that gearbox, we drivers just banged them through the gears! None of this letting the revs die down rubbish as we didn't have time! Especially around the London area! I drove a Leyland Atlanteans, Leyland Olympians of various years, Leyland Nationals and Dennis Darts to name just a few. All with semi or fully auto `boxes. One company I worked for also had coaches with manual boxes .. I could drive them as I also had a LGV1 licence but the crews that drove them guarded the jobs very closely as they were higher paid! Like your bus Fuzz, its a beaut!
Amazing video Fuzz!

I really enjoyed that, thank you.
Fuzz needs to make a TV series ....... restoration & driving classic British buses ...... could be more successful than bangers and cash 🇬🇧👍
I do love a vintage bus! And she isn no exception.
Lovely video! Pure Fuzz
Thanks for the ride Fuzz.👍

Hello Fuzz as an ex-bus driver I drove Leyland Atlanteans (Charles Roe) every day, we then drove MCWs and Later Scanias, comfort and safety of passengers at all times.
The MCW Metrobus was my favourite bus when I was a kid, especially the "TimeSaver" limited stop service with the comfy coach seats.
I truly envy you, I'm 64 and have loved Buses all my life. I have a large collection of model buses', however my dream has always been to drive one. That's a grand old lady you have there. Best wishes.
Another great video Fuzz, watch out for those trees!!
I drove an ex London transport Routemaster for the first time the other day. Loved it.
Brilliant film. I think Fuzz has that personality that can engage people with anything. More of Fuzz's fleet please...
What a great combination - one of my favourite presenters driving a bus.

During the 1970s I would ride one of those exact same buses, Livery too, to school and back every day in Walsall. Takes me right back. 🙂
Yes it’s the wmpte colours, I used to travel to school in Walsall in one of these, always fascinated me how such a small lever changed gears
That bus reminds me of the ones that used to run out of Digbeth bus station in Birmingham before we moved to Lancaster in the 70's when you had Lancaster city buses and Ribble buses. Nice one.
Takes me back to my bus mechanic days, 1970's,80's and 90's and the many road tests, breakdowns etc. I attended during that time. 😊

Just to say I enjoyed that!
Great ride Fuzz. As a kid I always liked to sit upstairs at the front above the driver.
Excellent drive and video Fuzz. Most of my 35 years driving career in Fleetlines. Thanks for the memories.
you can take me to work anytime Fuzz 😃
Imagine that's your gran walking down the aisle my instructor used to say. I never forgot that.

They used one as ours too, in Wales but still in WMPTE colours.
I’d love to ride that bus(z)
Enjoy the ride fuzz what a beautiful old bus I'm a bus enthusiast myself I call them big boys toys.
I remember buses like that in Coventry, but they didn't have the middle door.
Never drove an atlantian but we had titans and bristol vr's when i drove in Swindon many years ago
used to ride them a lot when visiting the rele's in Brum.
Thanks fuzz I was a bus driver for 34 years when I first started we VR Bristol ps you couldn’t fix me beloved focus up could you 😁👍
Landsail Tyres are fabulous and extremely good quality and value for money.

hi fuzz a great introduction to driving a double decker bus
that bus is so cool
Great video and great driving there 👍🙂

Really enjoyed your bus 🚍 run Fuzz. Keep up the good work as I love your work Pal. 👍
Great videos Fuzz. I knew exactly where you were on that trip, about 10 miles from my front door.

Fuzz, you're the classic.😄You have some amazing vehicles. Life is too short to drive anything boring. 👍
I passed my test, on a parking's diesel double clutch. Nobody ever started a bus in first gear. Only exceptions were steep hills.
What an effort to drive that bus, fair play to the drivers of old.
Had to smile when Fuzz said that the important thing is the comfort of the passengers. Try telling that to nxbus drivers, I've almost been on the floor or through the front window more than once and at 70 years old and with arthritis that's no fun. Great vid though
I just about remember them buses with the middle door

Lovely bus Fuzz. Why is the steering wheel so flat? l would have thought it would make it harder to drive? Specially if you had a bad back!
I suppose in Brum that would be known as the Fuzz Buzz!
Wow, I did my apprenticeship as a mechanic working on Atlantans and Bristol VR and yeah did every job possible on those from setting up the indicators that they went off after 20 seconds to riveting brake bands on gearbox brakes 🤦♂️ lol

Lovely we are all in to are children in my self yes we love it
Great drive, nice bus. Pretty busy with the steering wheel is that due to the wind or is the steering really vague and unsteady ?
Nothing wrong doing what you want especially when you can afford it! Id love to have a go driving a bus and HGV!
