I would recommend The Luminaries by Susan Dennard, Drinks and Sinkholes by S. Usher, Evans (I think you’d really like this one), and Beauty Reborn by Elizabeth Lowham. They may be a little long higher in the 200’s and low 300’s but very easy to read in a day.
How about some festive tear jerkers? 'Shining Brightly' by Ingvild Rishoi, 'Cider With Rosie' by Laurie Lee, 'A Tree Grows in Brooklyn' by Betty Smith, 'Little Women' by Louisa May Alcott or 'Small Things Like These' by Claire Keegan. Red noses are fashionable this time of year right?
My goal this year was 1 book per month & now i'm at 29 books! I've increased the challenge 1 more book to try for another one just bc i think i can make it ( i'm in the middle of one & have several others i could pick up)
Emily! It happens all the time! Watching your video, I think "why my cats are meowing? I was sure they were sleeping" before realizing it's your cats somewhere in the background 😆😆😆
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, The Last Dragoners of Bowbazar and The Six Deaths of the Saint are the best short stories I read this year! also Alix E. Harrow is turning tSDotS into a novel so that's really cool!
The sequel to What Moves the Dead, What Feasts the Night, is stunning!! And the main character is trans coded (technically, you’ll see) and queer. It’s amazing.
Every morning the way home gets longer and longer is one of my most recommended short books. I loved it so much, and yes, it made me cry. But I just thought it was beautiful. It’s also my most annotated book. I love Backman’s writing.
I read I Who Have Never Known Men about two years ago. I don’t remember how I heard about it but I loved it too. I recommended it to my daughter and she loved it too. I’m so glad you loved it. I like your description of the book. I’ve recommended it to many people but sadly it’s not for everyone. Really enjoyed this video. Thanks for all these interesting recommendations.
So glad to see a recommendation for Kaelen Patrick Burke! I love his brand of horror - his collection of short stories, Guests, I thought was great, and he’s an amazing artist as well! So he’s illustrated some of his books. Super underrated.
whilst I may be overthinking it 😅 to me it seems a mixture of all humans (past and present, and from all walks of life) being connected as one "Every time you victimized someone, you were victimizing yourself. Every act of kindness you've done, you've done to yourself. Every happy and sad moment ever experienced by any human was, or will be, experienced by you" and also not really knowing the human experience until you have lived every human life and all there is to be seen "Once you've lived every human life throughout all time, you will have grown enough to be born". I think the connection of people is particularly interesting as, even from 2009 when it was written, we have become more individualistic as a society and sometimes forget that connection still exists regardless of our differences
I thought it was interesting, a great way to say "hey stop being a terrible person, you're only being terrible to yourself in the long run" - but maybe that's over simplistic.
I have recently seen I Who Have Never Known Man in the airport bookstore! I picked it up and explained to my beau that it must've been you who singlehandedly brought it to the spotlight! Which is great, because it is a superb book.
Lately I instantly get cheered up when I see you've uploaded a video. I like your recommendations and they way you talk about them. Keep up and thank you! 💕
Ahhhhh, perfect timing! I've been reading short books lately to get myself out of a reading slump and reach my reading goal🤣 been reading the Shady Hollow by Juneau Black at the moment and now I have more short books to read. Thanks Emily your perfect timing and book recs😆
Last year I found “I who have never known men” at a book sale and couldn’t buy it fast enough. I read it along with “the wall” and thank you for the rec! This year I’ve already 100 books!! Next year I’ll read more classics so I won’t achieve 100.
Okay, you convinced me to try Octavia E. Butler! My library has two of her books: Kindred and The parable of the sower. Do you have a recommendation to start with?
@ i would also recommend the amazon short story collections. The obsession collection is wonderful, and theres one called forward i believe. Theyre each about an hour long.
I read Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism. It's eye-opening. When women live under better socioeconomic conditions, they are going to be less anxious and have more time and energy for sex and intimate relations. Who would've thought...(The book is more about socialism being a better system for people in general though).
Emily!! I have read most of the books you have recommended so I know my taste matches yours. Can you also recommend some good books to read on audible included in the subscription?
add 8 pages to your criteria and City of Thieves by David Benioff would makes this list easy. It reads so quickly. If it's still on your shelf you must forgive it for being WW2 historical fiction.
Last year I've read 55 books. The year before 65. My goal this year was 40. I am currently at 20. That's what you call a massive reading slumb. 😢 A few good short books could help me find out of it. Thank you for the recommendations.
Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny, 296 pages. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy story about a space colony run by humans who have turned themselves immortal and are now gods of the Hindu Pantheon. One god opposes them and tries to restore balance. It’s really good!
If you want a book to make you cry, highly suggest Airy Nothing by Clarissa Pattern, I just finished it and I have not devoured a book like that in a long time
Because of your recommendations... Read: Galatea, I Who Have Never Known Men, Bloodchild & Sour Candy. (Enjoyed/Loved them) On my TBR: Piranesi, Horrorstor, What Moves the Dead. Currently reading: The Wall (feeling the bleakness.)😂
Have you read Morgan Stang’s other books? They are the absolute best murder mysteries I’ve ever read. Lots of supernatural/horror elements and twists I didn’t see coming. They are self published and incredible
I reach my goal (50) in May 🤭 and the expanded goal (100) in September. Right now I'm reading the 144. My goal for December is to read tbr fantasy books I want to reduce the list.
I kept looking for the egg by Matt Haig 😭😭😭 then my one remaining brain cell actually worked 😂 I’ll be reading it this week and come back for the spoiler discussion 💚💚💚
I didn't vomit at the end of my Ultra- did I do it wrong? 😂 50k is my longest (so far 💪) but the hardest was Lyme Park Half Marathon - nearly 2000 ft of elevation. Bloody loved it though
Completely off topic with the video, but I just found two black and white cats that will most likely join the two black cats that I already have, so I too currently have four various degree of black cats 😂
I'd love to encourage you to read other non-fiction books besides books about feminism and self help. Maybe you would find new favorite topics and widen your horizons. ❤
What short books would you recommend? 📚
I know you are ify about stephen king, but The Long Walk or Carrie would work
I would recommend The Luminaries by Susan Dennard, Drinks and Sinkholes by S. Usher, Evans (I think you’d really like this one), and Beauty Reborn by Elizabeth Lowham. They may be a little long higher in the 200’s and low 300’s but very easy to read in a day.
The Yellow Wallpaper is an excellent short story/book (I think it is 68 pages). It is old but mighty!
How not to drown in a glass of water, The Ballad of Black Tom, A prayer for the crown shy, Seanan McGuire series, and bomb shelter.
I read ''I Who Have Never Known Men'' because you recommended it, and I did indeed read it in 1 day!!
I would also recommend Small Things Like These
My goal this year was 1 book per month & now i'm at 29 books!
Haha I don’t even notice it when editing because they’re meowing in real life at the same time 😂
same!! i’m always looking behind my back to see what they are doing
I'll do you one better, I'm always answering in meows and then look back to realize I was meowing to myself since MY cats are sleeping lol
And it always seems to me that my daughter has woken up and is screaming in the back room, that's really scary 😂😂
Thank you for recommending short books. As a mood reader, I greatly appreciate this video. 📚📖
The Ones Who Walk Away from Omelas, The Last Dragoners of Bowbazar and The Six Deaths of the Saint are the best short stories I read this year! also Alix E. Harrow is turning tSDotS into a novel so that's really cool!

I recommend The English Understand Wool by Helen DeWitt at 69 pages
Also, The Six Deaths of the Saint by Alix E. Harrow at 30 pages
Every morning the way home gets longer and longer is one of my most recommended short books. I loved it so much, and yes, it made me cry. But I just thought it was beautiful. It’s also my most annotated book. I love Backman’s writing.

Incredible timing! I needed this video. Thanks Emily :)
I always recommend reading plays to boost reading numbers.
Thank you, I forgot that but aslso read them for pleasure and joy of the form too.
It’s so impactful when you find the right plays for you to read 🎊 😊
What did you did of The Egg?
Spoilers in the comments
Tbh i dont even remember what happens 😂 i read it bc you recommended it and enjoyed it, i thought it was a great way to prove scifi can be accesible

It was very interesting. So many ways to look at it. I love books that are short but have so much meaning.
I thought it was interesting, a great way to say "hey stop being a terrible person, you're only being terrible to yourself in the long run" - but maybe that's over simplistic.
@@Taralovescoloring I can see that too! Love how 3 pages can be interpreted in so many ways
I have recently seen I Who Have Never Known Man in the airport bookstore! I picked it up and explained to my beau that it must've been you who singlehandedly brought it to the spotlight! Which is great, because it is a superb book.
Great list, even outside the "hit your list" hook. Sometimes it's nice to read a few short books in between larger novels.
Lately I instantly get cheered up when I see you've uploaded a video. I like your recommendations and they way you talk about them. Keep up and thank you! 💕
That’s so nice to hear! I have a long one going up in a few minutes ❤️
Ahhhhh, perfect timing! I've been reading short books lately to get myself out of a reading slump and reach my reading goal🤣 been reading the Shady Hollow by Juneau Black at the moment and now I have more short books to read. Thanks Emily your perfect timing and book recs😆
Thank you great video theme. Sometimes I read two books at once and this would be helpful! :)
great recs! this year I loved Binti, The Crypt of the Moon Spider and A Psalm for the Wild-Built 😊
I finally bought I Who Have Never Known Men! I’m afraid of The Wall. 😳
Last year I found “I who have never known men” at a book sale and couldn’t buy it fast enough. I read it along with “the wall” and thank you for the rec! This year I’ve already 100 books!! Next year I’ll read more classics so I won’t achieve 100.
LOVED FINNA AND DEFKT. Such good short books ❤
@@jensbookden me too!
Okay, you convinced me to try Octavia E. Butler! My library has two of her books: Kindred and The parable of the sower. Do you have a recommendation to start with?
Kindred!
Currently reading I Who Have Never Known Men because you recomend it. I have been liking it.
I would also recommend the free short stories Tor publishes, theyre very short and usually great premises!
Thank you so much, I’ve been looking for short fiction with compelling premises 🎉😊
@ i would also recommend the amazon short story collections. The obsession collection is wonderful, and theres one called forward i believe. Theyre each about an hour long.
*each short story
My reading speed is too slow to do anything longer than 100 pages in a day😅, but since I like short books these recs are always appreciated 💖
I read Why Women Have Better Sex Under Socialism. It's eye-opening. When women live under better socioeconomic conditions, they are going to be less anxious and have more time and energy for sex and intimate relations. Who would've thought...(The book is more about socialism being a better system for people in general though).
Thanks for the recommendations!!! I´m behind my goal of the year by 9 books soooo this is just perfect!!!!! 🥰
The Penric & Desdemona series is really good. I blew through the first 10 audiobooks in about 10 days
A wonderful list of books - thank you!
Emily!! I have read most of the books you have recommended so I know my taste matches yours. Can you also recommend some good books to read on audible included in the subscription?

Thanks for these great suggestions!
I really want to read sour candy!
Yay the first poster!!!🎉🎉🎉
Lord of Light by Roger Zelazny, 296 pages. It’s a sci-fi/fantasy story about a space colony run by humans who have turned themselves immortal and are now gods of the Hindu Pantheon. One god opposes them and tries to restore balance. It’s really good!
That moment when I need something to space out while working and Emily just uploaded a new video 1min ago 🎉
I was wondering how long it would take you to bring up "I Who Have Never Known Men" - to be fair, such a great book.
If you want a book to make you cry, highly suggest Airy Nothing by Clarissa Pattern, I just finished it and I have not devoured a book like that in a long time
Add To Be Taught If Fortunate by Becky Chambers to your list! Super quick read and probably ,y favorite read of 2024!
Because of your recommendations...
Read:
Galatea, I Who Have Never Known Men, Bloodchild & Sour Candy. (Enjoyed/Loved them)
On my TBR:
Piranesi, Horrorstor, What Moves the Dead.
Currently reading:
The Wall (feeling the bleakness.)😂
They all sounds amazing, im going to check yhem out❤
Any book by Claire Keegan!
Have you read Morgan Stang’s other books? They are the absolute best murder mysteries I’ve ever read. Lots of supernatural/horror elements and twists I didn’t see coming. They are self published and incredible
Murder at spindle manor is the first one
Yep my goal was 140 and I'm at 159 right now!
💪 woot!
I need to keep up. Starting next year. A little too late for this year
Can you review Chronicles of Chiney B Honey by Author Chiney B for me?
I think House with good bones is short and it was very good.
I reach my goal (50) in May 🤭 and the expanded goal (100) in September. Right now I'm reading the 144. My goal for December is to read tbr fantasy books I want to reduce the list.
I kept looking for the egg by Matt Haig 😭😭😭 then my one remaining brain cell actually worked 😂

We're both struggling 😂
All sound very interesting!
I didn't vomit at the end of my Ultra- did I do it wrong? 😂 50k is my longest (so far 💪) but the hardest was Lyme Park Half Marathon - nearly 2000 ft of elevation. Bloody loved it though
I’m reading the first book in a romantasy series and I hate it. Kind of want to not read anymore because of it
No Becky Chambers? 🥺
I didn’t want to repeat recommendations from preview videos!
which books by her do you recommend
The egg feels like cheating 😂😂, you might as well add "the lady or the tiger?" By Frank Stockton
Completely off topic with the video, but I just found two black and white cats that will most likely join the two black cats that I already have, so I too currently have four various degree of black cats 😂
No way we're living the same life haha
I ♥ Horrorstor
murderbooooooot
I didn't have one.
I have just one for 2025🙀
Perks of being a wildflower one of my favorite books! I love the film too 💚💚🎄📚📖💚🎄🎁📚📚📙🎄🎄🎄🎁🎁🎄💚❤️💚🎄🎁📚📚📚📙📙🎄💚
