Seoul is the city of brilliant lights. Underneath those lights, there are also young people who’ve been hurt by others and who are wandering along the dotted line of lostness. The new album of OnlyOneOf, who has come back as a group after a year, is named “seOul cOllectiOn” for a reason.
The 6 members have sung the dreams and hopes of young minorities by presenting “undergrOund idOl,” the diary of the youths, one after another last year. The reason stories are woven together with the voices of all 6 members this time is that the album captures the stories of Seoul’s loneliness and solitude, and those who are hurt in this city.
The title track “seOul drift” starts the engine of the song with a car exhaust sound-synthesizer line and races forward. The loneliness and wandering aren’t painted with silent darkness. Rather, they are sped up to the verge of hallucination and to their very limit. They are raced to the extent that they can no longer keep up and get exhausted. This song of Leftfield bass genre puts together Seoul’s glamorous lights and the dark reality on the city’s other side as music.
Seoul is now one of the most prominent cities in the world. K-pop has also become a genre that not only Koreans listen to. Everything in this city has become more glamorous and bustling, but that doesn’t mean everyone is happy.
OnlyOneOf always sings about loneliness and pain or the stories of those whose love isn’t blessed. We often simply brush them off as something minor, but they are stories that someone should caress and embrace.
OnlyOneOf hopes that there will be unknown gods’ blessings in these difficult steps being taken, and that there will be blessings from our fans whom we appreciate and whose names you may not know.

화려한 불빛의 도시 서울. 그곳 불빛 아래에는 타인에게 상처받고, 방황의 점선을 따라 방랑하는 젊은이들도 살고 있다. 온리원오브가 1년 만의 완전체 새 앨범의 이름을 ‘seOul cOllectiOn’라고 정한 데에는 그 이유가 있다.
작년 한 해 숨돌릴 틈도 없이 내달려왔던 청춘의 일기장 ‘undergrOund idOl’을 내 보이며 마이너한 젊은이들의 꿈과 희망을 노래했던 이들이, 6명 전부의 목소리를 겹쳐 이야기를 직조한 것은 서울의 외로움과 고독. 이곳에서 상처 받은 이야기를 담았기 때문이다.
타이틀곡 ‘seOul drift’는 자동차 배기음 신디사이저 라인을 시작으로 음악에 시동을 걸고 질주한다. 외로움과 방황이 정적인 어둠으로 그려지는 것이 아니라 환각에 가까울 정도로 속도를 걸고, 자신의 한계에 끝까지 다다르게 달려본다. 더이상 지쳐 힘이 나지 않을 때까지 달려본다. 레프트필드 베이스 장르의 곡으로 서울의 화려한 불빛과 그 이면의 다크 한 실상을 음악에 접합했다.
서울이라는 도시는 이제 전 세계 중에 손꼽히는 도시이다. K-POP이라는 장르도 비단 한국인들만 듣는 장르가 아닌 게 되었고 이 곳의 모든 것이 화려해지고 숨 가빠졌다. 그렇다고 모두가 행복한 것은 아니다.
온리원오브가 늘 주제로 삼고 있는 외로움과 상처 혹은 축복받지 못한 사랑을 하고 있는 사람들의 이야기들. 우리는 그것을 쉽게 마이너하다고 얘기하지만 누군가는 보듬어주어야 할 이야기들.
온리원오브의 그 어려운 발걸음에 이름 모를 신들의 가호가 있기를.

my theory on how i think this mv connects to undergrOund idOl:
i'll go pairing by pairing
first some assumptions i'll be going off of:
the cranes in undergrOund idOl symbolise patience
the phone booth is a restrictive world view (kind of like the closet)
kyubin and yoojung:
in this mv we see yoojung back at the phone booth, patiently waiting for kyubin to pick him up (1:20). similar to how in be1 and 2 he was waiting in the phone booth with an open door (his patience was shown by him folding paper cranes). not quite ready to step out himself but open to someone else entering his life. kyubin had to basically barge in bc yoojung wouldn't make a move but his door was open as he was waiting for someone else to be brave enough
this time we see him drive away, leaving the phone booth and restrictions behind (2:49 and 3:00)
rie and junji:
in be3 and 4 lyOns commonly theorised that the problem in their relationship was how junji was out and open while rie was still closeted and too scared to be seen in public (he was happy when they were alone, but looked uncomfortable when there people around and he was closed off in the phone booth with junji standing outside of it). back then junji knocked which at least made rie hang up (possibly meaning he stopped listening to others) but we never really saw him step out and be free. in the because mv we see junji run out of patience as shown through him knocking over the paper cranes, leading to their argument.
in seOul drift we see rie in the phone booth once again hanging up (0:47) and not only stepping out but holding a pride bag while doing so, a determined look on his face. he goes to meet junji, pride bag still in hand (0:59), and we see them play around cutely (2:39), seems like rie has finally gotten the courage to come out
mill and nine:
they are the only pairing that doesn't interact with the phone booth this time whatsoever which was what originally made me intrigued enough to come up with a theory.
in be5 and 6 mill is basically out already (possibly against his will as he seems to be getting bullied for it) and so fitting to that he was already not properly inside the phone booth but was standing in the open door, and immediately stepped out completely for nine. so they were already out in undergrOund idOl which is why their story didn't need a coming out conclusion here, they had already left behind restrictions and society's views.
even in the be series they were the only ones without origami cranes, many lyOns theorised that this was because they had no patience to begin with, they went into the relationship head first and were themselves even in the face of danger
which brings me to my last point: the missing origami cranes in seOul drift. i think this means all the couples have run out of patience with society and don't want to hide anymore. this song is about being yourself and following your own path. so they have no patience left (no cranes) and finally leave restrictions (the phone booth) behind to be their most authentic selves!
and that should wrap up the series

From the description, we know the the dark concept OnlyOneOf is going after the dark reality many people have not fully recognized or are willing to admit. Kpop songs are usually upbeat, and Kpop idols are trying to portray positive energies to cheer people up. When the concepts go dark, they are usually more fantasized or abstract. I appreciate OnlyOneOf is addressing real-world issues through their music and bringing comfort to people who feel marginalized and lost in the modern world, which can be extremely isolating. An interesting TMI is that all OnlyOneOf members are not originally from seOul but from different places in Korea, so themselves are a form of cOllectiOn in seOul.
Edit after the premier: There is a lot of pay attention to. The overall impression is that OnlyOneOf never repeat themselves in terms of music, choreo, MV, and message while there is still a coherent theme going through all of them. I love there is always something new to enjoy with every release! I hope to see a choreo video in the same cyberpunk dance scene with the red outfit!

This song is so different and unique yet it feels very familiar. I love how this song has that powerful, loud and messy sound and structure we hear often in kpop but with OnlyOneOf's sensual and smooth touch. And that's why this group and their songs are so special. They don't go with trends, they just keep on doing their own thing and they're not afraid of experimenting with very different and challenging concepts, songs and choreos. This comeback is definitely their most powerful one, almost all members rap and the energy is so high and intense. The mv captures that really well, just love the aesthetic of it so much, it goes well with the song's title name, meaning and sound. And I love how they kept their pairs and included some elements from their underground idol stuff, it's a very nice way to conclude all of them into one complete group's comeback mv. This comeback makes me even happier that I found these hidden gems and got into this group. Even tho I wish them the biggest success and that more people would appreciate them but at the same time I'm kinda glad they didn't become popular and didn't achieve everything right away just from their debut what is very common in kpop nowadays. They might have more difficult and challenging path into success with them being in a smaller company but what matters at the end of the day that at least they have a good professional team behind them which supports their artistic freedom and provides them very high quality videos. Everything about this group feels so raw, authentic, honest and real. They're not here for money or popularity, they're here for their passion - art, music and the stories they want to share with us to help, support and inspire people. I respect them a lot for not trying to suit the public's taste, for spreading such messages about the topics that are very sensitive and sadly still not well accepted and understood in today's society especially in a country like South Korea. I hope they don't really care about some negative opinions, they just need to know that they have their own special audience that truly love, understand and appreciate them and will continue to support their slow but steady journey to success. I hope that one day their wish to get a first win will come true, we have to always work hard for them. But with or without a win they're still the same insanely talented group with only the best quality of content. I'm very proud of them^^
