The Soviet-made AA-2, used in the engagement, was a copy of an earlier Sidewinder (B) model too. One "captured" by the ChiComs and given to the Soviets after it failed to detonate and got stuck in one of their aircraft.
The original AIM-9B was mediocre. By this time however the AIM-9D/E/G were in service, which were a significant improvement over the original (and it's Soviet copy, the AA-2 Atoll).

Side note: The Soviets, just like the Americans, abandoned aerial combat when Air-to-Air missiles were first introduced. But then high losses of Soviet-trained North Vietnamese pilots and their own losses in Egypt convinced Soviet high command to relaunch air combat schools, which became the Soviet version of Top Gun, Center for Combat Development 1521 at the airbase Мaryy, or "Мaryy" for short. Ironically, Maryy was the airbase where the Soviet fighter regiment was sent to sharpen their skills before they went to Egypt, the very regiment that was bested by the Israelis in this video. Thanks for the excellent video. The War Of Attrition is surely one of the most ridiculous wars in terms absolutely unbelievable engagements as well as the surrounding politics. For example, at the time Israel operated an armored special forces unit known as White Bear, which consisted of amphibious Soviet-made tanks and IFVs, that used to cross the Suez Canal in special circumstances. In one such operation this unit crossed into Egypt and accidentally ran over a Soviet general and killed a few more, all while doing horrible damage to a number of Egyptian military installations. I highly recommend looking into the research of Boris Dolin, I don't think he was published in English but might have.

Israeli pilots don't lie about mistakes in battle. Every training session or operation ends with a "debrief" where each participant evaluates his performance and offers ways to improve.
Some people here are rewriting History (because this is what they learn at school in Egypt). They claim this 1973 War was a victory for Egypt against Israel. If so why Israel returned the Sinai Peninsula to Egypt only on April 25, 1982? 9 years after the war! This restitution followed the Israeli-Egyptian peace agreements signed in 1979, known as the Camp David Accords. These agreements, mediated by the United States, led to the normalization of relations between Israel and Egypt, as well as Israel's withdrawal from the Sinai Peninsula.

Because without the war, Israel would have never returned the Sinai. They couldn't guarantee a future victory, so they decided peace at any cost was the best option and gave back the Sinai. Israeli generals gained respect for them and were terrified of fighting the Egyptians again. That much is true. But they did not win the battlefield. At most, you could say it was a draw since neither sided wanted or could continue, and they both wanted a ceasefire. Don't forget that both sides had their wmds pointed at each other (Egypt had Soviet supplied nukes) and ready to fly.

The war of attrition was quite I conclusive in a stretegic sense, though Israel did dominate the Egyptians. The Soviet ground based air defences were much more lethal and were too much for the Israels to break through, but again the Israelis never really tried to get into a proper knife fight with the Soviets

That's a rather far-fetched conclusion though. Generally speaking, Egyptian and Arab pilots in general were and probably still are mediocre because of various reasons. They rely heavily on central command (ground-controlled interception) and display poor tactical behavior and creative thinking. Many don't even understand how some parts of their aircraft work. More likely, Soviet pilots of that time were similarly mediocre as Egyptian pilots were.
@@BlueBockser if properly trained Egyptian pilots would fair much better* than they did and mediocrity is a relative term,however the Egyptian Airforce command structure,training and control was largely based on the Soviet system which left little leeway in the way aerial combat is conducted.Control and direction from the ground not only prohibits initiative it allows the opposition to take advantage of the situation…*the N Vietnamese Airforce used the Soviet system a lot more effectively than the Egyptians and in some instances was able to take advantage of the the restrictions and constraints placed on American pilots so yeah mediocrity is a relative term …

As capable as aircraft are, and as fast as they can go, and as far as they can seemingly fly, they are very limited in terms of the area and duration that they can fight. Good tactical decision making and planning is critical in terms of setting up a Battle space and executing a mission. This is due to how little time aircraft have to fight and how short air battles last.
I've been subbed to your channel for years and really enjoy all your content. But I want to give a couple important bits of feedback that have been on my mind for a while. 1)Display the important info regarding the setting of the conflict ON SCREEN as you say it. Most videos I need to rewind to make sure I understand the setting, time and location wise. 2) A channel of this size and consistent success should maybe consider providing subtitles for their videos, rather than counting on the auto-generated ones. Deaf and HoH communities would thank you, but they would still be beneficial to all your viewers such as myself, especially since you use so much specific military terminology that the auto-subtitles won't pick up. Again, love your work and I give these suggestions out of love

There's some info missing. For example, at the time of the engagement, Israel managed to bring down the Russian long range communication channels, which was one of the main reasons the extra 8 MiGs never came to the battle and the Soviets later kept quiet about it.

? In 1979, Egypt and Israel signed a peace treaty in which Israel agreed to withdraw from the entirety of the Sinai Peninsula. Israel subsequently withdrew in several stages, ending on 26 April 1982.
Because it was, Operation Badr in particular really shook the Israelis and forced them to admit that negotiation was necessary. For the first time the Egyptians managed to bloody their nose.
The following ceasefire was not a coincidence. Israel used this battle to pressure it, and promised not to tell of the Soviet humiliation in return. Indeed, the Soviet humiliation was only recently revealed, long after Israel and Egypt signed a peace agreement.
Israeli leadership is seeking peace as acceptably as they can. when you deal with a religion like Islam which is seeped in hatred, revenge and envy it's difficult to find a trustworthy concession with that.
Israeli fighter pilots are the most experienced in the world, I would argue the most skilled pilots. US F-15, F-16 and F-35 first seen combat are by Israeli pilots. Israel was the first to battle test those fighters

Just as the Egyptian Air Force had been under the tutelage and training of in country allied Soviet pilots to fly MiGs so were there fellow Communist North Korean pilots assigned to Egypt. Some participated and failed in initial air attacks upon Israel.

Egypt already requested many times Israel to withdraw from Sinai before 1973 and Israel refused
After 1973 war the situation was different the objective was getting Sinai back and objective achieved first stage by crossing Suez Canal and getting Egyptian forces back to Sinai, stop the counter attack, then the rest came after ceasefire

Using a book written by Henry Kissinger as his sources. I just told him to go to the page where Henry concluded that Israel won that war. Haven't heard of him since.
The war of attrition was quite I conclusive in a stretegic sense, though Israel did dominate the Egyptians. The Soviet ground based air defences were much more lethal and were too much for the Israels to break through, but again the Israelis never really tried to get into a proper knife fight with the Soviets

They were Soviet made, but what I'm talking about is the initial positioning of the Soviet air defences for operational badr + the Soviet air defence crews in the war of attrition which taken in isolation were quite effective against the Israelis

@@westerncitizen114 the F-4 rarely lost to the MiG-21, the F-4 maintained 151 victories to 41 losses in air combat throughout the Vietnam war, the MiG-21 maintained 85-95. all this in consideration that the F-4s would usually perform multirole missions, carrying bombs and rockets rather than pure air superiority and interception missions like the MiG-21s. regardless, the MiG-21 had the majority of its recorded kills happen in the first half of the USA intervention in Vietnam during operation Rolling Thunder which saw the Americans deploying mostly F-105s with full payloads and heavy bombers with the addition of some early models of the F-4 Phantom which predated the MiG-21 models the Vietnamese possessed, once the operation was over the F-4s were upgraded to Echo and Julliet models(very little remained Charlie and Delta variants) the ratio of MiG-21s scoring victories reduced catastrophically. most F-4s in the war would be lost to Surface to Air Missiles, as most of their sorties were medium to low altitude bombing missions.
It was widely known that the Egyptian pilots quietly celebrated the Israeli “victories “over the Russians,feeling fully vindicated and realizing that they were not mediocre after all…
That's a rather far-fetched conclusion though. Generally speaking, Egyptian and Arab pilots in general were and probably still are mediocre because of various reasons. They rely heavily on central command (ground-controlled interception) and display poor tactical behavior and creative thinking. Many don't even understand how some parts of their aircraft work.
More likely, Soviet pilots of that time were similarly mediocre as Egyptian pilots were.

As capable as aircraft are, and as fast as they can go, and as far as they can seemingly fly, they are very limited in terms of the area and duration that they can fight. Good tactical decision making and planning is critical in terms of setting up a Battle space and executing a mission. This is due to how little time aircraft have to fight and how short air battles last.

I've been subbed to your channel for years and really enjoy all your content. But I want to give a couple important bits of feedback that have been on my mind for a while. 1)Display the important info regarding the setting of the conflict ON SCREEN as you say it. Most videos I need to rewind to make sure I understand the setting, time and location wise.
2) A channel of this size and consistent success should maybe consider providing subtitles for their videos, rather than counting on the auto-generated ones. Deaf and HoH communities would thank you, but they would still be beneficial to all your viewers such as myself, especially since you use so much specific military terminology that the auto-subtitles won't pick up.

You get ready for military Service at age 14 or 16 and then by Age 18 you're serving in the Defence Forces be it as a Paratrooper, an Tanker or just a Standard Infantryman.
There's some info missing. For example, at the time of the engagement, Israel managed to bring down the Russian long range communication channels, which was one of the main reasons the extra 8 MiGs never came to the battle and the Soviets later kept quiet about it.
i think we also interfered with their communications by adding our own messages from russian speakers.

Because it was, Operation Badr in particular really shook the Israelis and forced them to admit that negotiation was necessary. For the first time the Egyptians managed to bloody their nose.

The following ceasefire was not a coincidence. Israel used this battle to pressure it, and promised not to tell of the Soviet humiliation in return. Indeed, the Soviet humiliation was only recently revealed, long after Israel and Egypt signed a peace agreement.

Just as the Egyptian Air Force had been under the tutelage and training of in country allied Soviet pilots to fly MiGs so were there fellow Communist North Korean pilots assigned to Egypt. Some participated and failed in initial air attacks upon Israel.

Seems a tradition that soviets always have high losses, especially as the conflicts get more technologically advanced. The more you need well trained personnel and high performance equipment, the less soviets seem to succeeed in battle.

Awesome account of the battle! I have a question; how the HECK does anyone know who's who when its a 20+ aircraft dogfight like that? :D
The aircraft look very different, pilots are communicating with each other and most importantly pilots spend a ton of time studying to identify enemy assets.
That is why pilots train for years before becoming an actual combat pilot
