The Syrians, by comparison, had no AWACS and were flying 2nd generation MiG-21 with 3rd generation MiG-23s. The latter were used primarily for ground attack. Let's not forget too that in 1965, the Mossad convinced a disgruntled Iraqi Christian pilot, Captain Munir Redfa, to defect to Israel with a brand new MiG-21F - so the Israeli Air Force practised against that MiG-21 to find their weakness. So, it was absolutely no surprise this was a turkey-shoot.

I remember that in the late 80s the Israeli Air Force was considered the best in the world, and all the whining about the F-15 ceased immediately. Also interesting to see how far the Sparrow had come since it's disappointing performance in Vietnam.
You see that now with the F-35. so much whining about budgets and capabilities mostly from people who have no idea what they're talking about. No we see it's a plane that can play around in hostile airspace thousands of miles away and come back without a scratch
The Sparrow was always capable. It was the radar that was inadequate during the Vietnam War. Non-PD radars meant that US pilots could only fire at targets flying high but NVAF planes flew down low so the F-4’s radar couldn’t track them (well this wasn’t even the biggest problem, the lack of IFF meant that F-4’s needed visual identification in order to fire their missiles so they had to fly in close to ID the radar contact by which point they didn’t have the advantage of SARH missiles)

First of all- well done on a great and informative video. ❤ This operation was described in books with many details missing due to military classification. It took Israeli military forum "Fresh" years to get these additional details, so please try to hold your horses with comparison to these books. Just a few comments: 1. The F-4Es didn't use just AGM-88. Many different A/G standoff weapons were used, including GBU-15, Walleye, and some Israeli-made EO bombs like "Tadmit". The various EO weapon videos from this operation are available on youtube. 2. In 1982, UAVs were used for intel only. No UAV was directly dropping ordnance on SAMs- those 1982 UAVs were small- but still bigger than an RC toy plane. 3. In the dogfights, the usage of AIM-7 wasn't that common. From Israeli F-15 sqn 133's scoreboard- most Migs were downed by F-15s with AIM-9s and the rest with AIM-7s and cannons. F-16A,Bs only had AIM-9 and cannons. And anyway, F-16A,B never had AIM-7s. 4. Another then-secret aspect- Israel developed ground-launched versions of the AGM-88 and AGM-45 , launched from various APCs and six-tracks. The missile had an extra booster. 5. One of the F-4E pilots was able to spot an escaping SAM-8 battery, had no bombs so strafed it with the cannon- he got decorated for that.

The Israelis not only had 4th Gen combat aircraft, they also had AWACS which boosted the radar signature of the Syrians so it was far easier to identify them.
I wasn’t aware Israel also got their hands on a MiG-21. I knew the US did, but I’d always just assumed they’d shared the data.

Im from beqaa valley, its a vast flat earth surrounded by 2 big and high mountain chains, i wasnt born back then but i can imagine how they used the mountains overlooking it as a surprise element. Israel just casually inventing both drone warfare and modern SEAD in one battle.
Wrong on both counts. The MQM 57 Falconer entered service in the 1950s. The first F100 Wild Weasels began operation in 1965
@thekinginyellow1744
The MQM 57 was not a modern drone capabilities wise and was not utilized within the modern context of drone warfare. It had very rudimentary remote piloting capabilities had no live feed from its cameras and was used as a miniaturized spy plane rather than a combat or tactical drone.
As to wild weasels that's why I said modern SEAD. Mole Cricket 19 was the first use of anti radiation missile equipped planes in concert with other air assets to achieve complete air dominance over defenses using planes.
@@AlbatrossCommando do you understand what the word "invent" means? clown

I wonder if, and when, full details of the recent Israeli strike on Iran will emerge. It will be quite interesting to say the least.
So much have happened since this video came out.

First of all- well done on a great and informative video. ❤
This operation was described in books with many details missing due to military classification. It took Israeli military forum "Fresh" years to get these additional details, so please try to hold your horses with comparison to these books.
Just a few comments:
F4-E is such a remarkable aircraft. I "ve seen them firsthand for the last time about 10 years ago, the last ones flying overhead in Arava Desert.
