Greatest version I’ve heard since my personal favorite rendition by John Lucien. I love his phrasing his particular timing and rhythm. It’s like having an intimate conversation with the woman that he’s talking with and that’s another thing that he does great in this song it’s like it’s in an intimate conversation he’s having with her that the rest of us just eavesdropping on. Fantastic beautiful job.
One of those special songs that I thought nobody else could come close to singing it like Bill Withers. I bought James' cd because of it. He nailed it!
The Bill Withers level is too subdued and predictable for my taste. Not throwing shade on Bill Withers at all, but JJ here add more colors to the song his phrasing is unpredictable and his ending especially makes it seem so conversational and that there’s more to come that we don’t have access to hearing. Matter of fact, his whole phraseology makes it seem like this is an intimate conversation that we just happen to be eavesdropping on.
@ I understand what your saying about Bill Withers. To some degree I think it helps a lot to have lived during the 1960s and 70s to get the vibe of what I was trying to say. There was a certain mindset or feel that differs (but not necessary better) from way we see things today. It’s hard to put into words but if you were alive during that time, you’d know exactly what I mean. In any case, I still think JJ’s rendition is very good too!
