I'm just waiting for when GW writes in some Zerg tangent. When tyranids find that they can stop devouring and potentially cultivate that they may create genetically accurate mimics of some races. Only to find out it was the necrons somehow co opted the tyranids to control and make organic bodies for themselves
Tyranid ruled 40K Galaxy?! A Galactic scale graveyard with the bulk of the nids moving on to the next galaxy and the remaining ones in the Milky Way going feral or killing each other off in a last deperate attempt at getting more biomass. The Milky Way mostly re-starts from microbial life and in a couple of billion years, new races emerge to assert their dominance of the Galaxy..before the Hive Mind is unwittingly alerted again and rolls back into town to start nom nom noming everything all over again..
That's what i thought, they just grow bigger and fatter while there is plenty around for each fleet/queen/hivemind!? At some point it will get more and more difficult to find new biomass and they start feeding on each other. Others might be fat enough at that point to survive the trip to another universe and simply leave to the next. Perhaps as has been speculated they already send out smaller fleets to scout other universes for when the moment comes they run out of biomass. I dont think all the Tyranids are under one hivemind, there probably is a hierarchy in hiveminds, but more likely it is each "hivemind" for themselves and as long as there is an abandunce of biomass for everyone they dont bother to much with each other. I imagine they are devouring as much biomass as possible to become the biggest and strongest hivemind among many so they can take on any rivals. With an estimated 200 billion galaxies to feed on and no way of knowing how old the Tyranids are and how many universes they already strip minned a single mind for all tyranids in existence anywhere seems highly unlikely. A single hivemind has no reason to leave a universe, it could simply reduce it's size so a single galaxy can sustain it for 100 of millions of years even endlessly with some good management to not fully strip planets so they revive quicker.
In Warhammer 40K the biggest food for the Tyranids are the Imperium with more than 1 Million planets and the Orks who know how many planets they have, The Taus are just a snack.
If the Nids can eat enough Celestials that they can reverse engineer their mind control effects, whole planets might start instantly surrendering to the Greater Good (of the nids).
My personal speculation on the Tyrranid end game also ties into the reason for their coming to our galaxy in the first place. The idea comes entirely from outside the lore and is all because I grew up with a bee hive in my back yard, but the behavior of real life hives seems a likely inspiration for tyrranid motives and engagement is engagement so ill drop it anyway ; ) Bees reproduce on an individual scale but one of the most fascinating things to witness is how they reproduce on the scale of a new hive. The way in which a bee hive comes to be has a lot to do with the life stage of the queen. An infant queen landing in a suitable hollow and beginning a nest looks much different from the power struggle of an elderly queen at the end of her fertility becoming replaced in her own hive by several rising queens. What I find relevant to the tyrranids is between these two, when a hive in its "golden age" the middle of a thriving queens life cycle. Hives in this stage will grow to fill the confines of their location, and actually send out a colony mass complete with an nascent queen out of the hive when the hive has essentially grown too big. A fully mature and fertilized queen can't actually fly, they are bound to their established home. So when an offshoot colony forms they form around a young still maturing queen. This pre-queen will perch near the original hive, and near half of the colony will be "ordered" to go with her. They form a protective mass around the future queen, piling all around in a shield of bodies, keeping her warm, protecting her, and bringing food to her from the outside of the mass in. From this roiling pile you can observe individual bees flitting off, scouts searching for the colonies ideal location. When a suitable location is reported this staged colony will leave the area of the original hive and form a home elsewhere, rich pollen not competed over, and a safe structure to form a hive within being ideal. What I find so interesting about this is that this is done under the sort of direction of the "old" queen. It is a kind of pragmatic move, culling her own hives population by half lets her sustain her reign all the longer. Remember, she alone cannot fly, so her management of where she stands is what matters to her. Further a nascent queen reaching full maturity inside her hive will lead to conflict. Either her workers sensing a new healthy queen will side with the new queen and kill her, or she will win out and kill this new queen. Therefore the future queen must be sent away while she can still fly off. Essentially this colonization is in a species sense a means of reproduction, but to the queen it is a move of survival. All this is just to help us imagine if the Hive Mind where in a similar cycle. Perhaps it is physically rooted in its home galaxy, and some biological trigger has led to the seeds of new not yet mature Hive Minds being born. The tyrranid fleets we see are still under the orders of the original Hive Mind but they won't be forever. The Hive Mind could be ensuring its own survival by casting out these off shoots to other galaxies. Culling the population of its own. Perhaps the home galaxy they hail from is significantly smaller than ours, and the Hive Mind is a mass so titanic and established, sitting upon some unmovable source of nourishment or psychic power that it cannot be moved from. The bees sent with a nascent queen are at first of the old hive, acting on the direction of the old queen, with a powerful drive to propel far from their home hive to ensure her safety and thriving. Given time though the new queen will become their drive. I wonder if the tyrranid away fleets are surrounding Hive "seeds" lifeforms that are slowly turning into fully separate and powerful Hive Minds, too dangerous to be near the original. While the Hive Mind still has dominion it must order the dangerous soldiers of its kind to a far flung galaxy to make it impossible for a new Hive Mind to compete with it. I think then that maybe the tyrranids have an end goal for our galaxy beyond just stripping it clean. I think they could be guarding Hive Minds to be, and our galaxy is a proving ground for one to emerge as a new queen to rule all the tyrranids within our galaxy. It is observed that bee hives have distinct personalities and adaptations. Hives retain a kind of memory and trauma, for example two hives of the exact same species might have different levels of hostility to human handlers. One hive having been mishandled in the past might be automatically more aggressive than its neighbor that regards humans as pretty much harmless. So again fully speculative, maybe the different tendrils with their differing strengths could be separate colonies originating from the same single Hive Mind. Each is carrying a unique Hive Seed, a different future Hive Mind. For now they are all still under the one influence of the Hive Mind... but eventually each queen will mature, and root itself as a nearer more overwhelming influence. The old Hive Mind will be forgotten as the Gorgon, Kraken, and Leviathan queens establish themselves into rooted and unmoving entities that must compete for the field of bio mass they have all landed in. It is often bandied around in the 40k community that perhaps the Tyrranids we see are running from something. I think this theory brings some truth to that, but rather it is the Original Hive Mind sending these ticking time bombs as far away from it as possible. The Tyrranids we see are not running, they are being desperately pushed away. For the seeds they carry are perhaps the only real threat to the Hive Mind Itself!
The thought of the Tyranid Hive Mind devouring/recycling the soul as well as the body is genuinely disturbing beyond belief. Sounds like something out of Berserk.
omg can you imagine the souls of creatures from their previous feeding trying to scream out warn us but all people hear is the screams of a Tyrranid as it rips apart the populace? ahh and then having to watch as the body its trapped in toss itself into the digestion pools and feeling themselves melt again and thier soul gets dragged back up into a hive ship and queued up for another body...
"All Subjects Incinerated." I absolutely love the survivor records and first-hand accounts you do like this and the one on the titans. You could do an entire series like this.
While the other survivor records were pretty good, as you said, that first survivor record was _awful._ It sounded like a girl recording her senior year "last day of highschool" prank, and absolutely not like someone surviving an invasion by perhaps the most nightmarish creatures in the entire setting
@@orbitalbutt6757 Agreed, mostly. That doesn't in any way negate my compliments to previous guest performances, but it is, upon another listen, a bit jarring. If I had to explain it away... my version would be that these survivors had been contaminated by genestealer implants. I know those mostly cause confusion and mind-haze in the victims, but as a 'working guess '..?
I recently rewatched your Octarius videos and was just thinking this. Super excited to see how you break it down. Thank you for the videos and hard work, as always. Blessed be the Loremaster.
Well Tyranids won. Its heading for Sol system soon. Tyranids succeed in killing the Overfiend of Octarius and smashing his empire but scattered fighting continues Cordon Impenetra stable. Some of lore point to eldar intervention next.
24:00 there are books where the mechanicus had captured some bits of 2 tyrranid fleets for study, and they instinctively hated each other and would chew off their own limbs if it meant getting even a single blow against some part of the other fleets members, importantly ignoring anything else to get to them, they would ignore electrical charges that previously nullified them to push through and kill the other if you put them in adjacent cells, at first the imperial observers thought they were trying to join up together to form a larger force and break out, but they just murdered each other as brutally as possible with an anger they never show against any other enemy. source: The Greater Good - Caiaphas Cain book 9
I imagine the Tyranid's preferred megaproject would be an initial Dyson swarm (unintended pun there, nice) that instinctively forms massive rings of biostructures at the poles of a star, resulting in a starlifting phenomenon that increases the amount of matter they obtain from it and maximizing the time they can milk every main sequence star. until only a red dwarf is left for them to use as a waypoint. Red does suit a Tyranid galaxy better.
Organic Dyson sphere is actually a brilliant idea. Drawing most of stars energy changing the star into huge troops production facility, or whatever would be needed. I can't imagine Tyranids creating anything else than more Tyranids though 😂
The organic Dyson sphere, or Star eater, would itself be a giant tyranid. We know that they have the biological ability to manipulate gravity, so they could harvest both matter and energy from a star while also being able to move itself around. That combined with space based bioforms harvesting raw material from near by solar systems, asteroid mining etc, would result in a massive near inexhaustible tyranid factory.
Really happy with the ending of this and a few of the previous videos. No insanely loud hardrock music. Probably not alone in listening to your videos when I go to bed. Nothing worse than falling asleep and being blasted awake at the end of a nigh 2h video.
Also I don’t think the nids actually can “win” by consuming all the galaxy. Think about what happens in nature when a preditor or herbivores gets too good at their job. They either eat everything in their region and starve to death, don’t all starve to death and find a sweet spot population or hyper nation cycle that syncs up with their prey’s reproduction (suitability evolution /farming), or they start competing with eachothers and turn into different species (loose their oneness like what happens with ants and bees and how at one point they all use to be one species now warring different from eachother. Best case scenario for the tyrnids is not eating all the galxy and moving on leaving the previous imposible for life to re-emerge! That’s just asking for the starvation scenario. I think Tyrinds actualy just want to evolve and eat enough to continue their evolution but not too much that it’s impossible for the galaxy as a whole to no longer sustain them and push them forward. Maybe the nids are not written badly after all they loose and not conquer all on purpose 🤣
@@wastelesslearning1245That's what they might need to cross galactic distances. Wherever they are coming from, it's likely they degraded during the trip. Being almost god like at their heights, but entropy and radiation degrades their DNA over long enough time scales. Eating the Milky Way would give them enough gusto and time to move on. Possibly splitting into a bunch of hives, as a form of reproduction. As they say; a galaxy is only big enough for one tiger.
Getting back into my artwork after almost a decade of my talent being shelved by my own choice! This type of content is almost perfect background entertainment that allows for my escape into my craft! Thanks brother for your diligence in keeping escapism somewhat healthy for me!
It would be hilarious if the Tyranids, now that they're not 100% roaming consumers, are building massive fleshy (or chitinous) dyson spheres to turn harvested systems into giant sugar farms.
If the Tyranids are as smart as they're supposed to be, that should be their end goal for the galaxy. It would still make sense for step 1 to be to devour all life, because biomass is super easy to use and it will eliminate any possible threat to their long-term plans, before beginning the much slower process of harvesting *everything*
neither plants not algea grow out of nothing and the nids can use the minerals more efficiently only farming that makes sense for them is orks, making uncorrupted matter out of the warp, wich they have already done
Imagine being a Necron, waking up for the first time in 50 million years. You step out of your tomb complex and yawn, feeling the warm, friendly, rays of a star. It's a strange feeling, a unique feeling, but then you hear a vast rumbling which turns into the slavering of trillions of small teeth. You quail, not in fear for such emotions were lost to you in the bio-transference incepted by The Deceiver, but maybe the memory of fear. Out of the mass of insectoid creatures steps a massive, multi-limbed, creature. By the way the rest of the things draw back you know this is their leader. As it's mind probes yours you realise this is The Queen. Your necrodermis begins to secrete a cold, clammy, salt-like substance. Then the alien mind breaks contact with yours. "Nah!" it says "I can't eat that! At least not without some sauce!" As the creatures skitter away towards the horizon you decide to go back to sleep. It's been a long day and your undergarments require reconstitution.
I thought I remembered a book passage where some Space Marines (Space wolves?) hid on an asteroid from a passing hive tendril and saw so many bioforms over so long it broke their brains a bit. Looked a couple times but I can't remember what it's from. But that times however many hundreds or thousands of tendrils...
And that's how you start the weekend... Thank you Luetin brother.. you got me into the Warhammer world almost a year back.. didn't look back since... Regards from India
Fantastic Video as always. I'm sure there are many who would want to see an "If the Imperium ruled the Galaxy" but I want to see the Necrons. Who most likely would conquer then go back to inter-Dynastic feuds, held in place under the sway of the Silent King. However, I can't see Trazyn enjoying this new state of existence, without other species in the Galaxy, there would be nothing to collect, which might lead him to unleashing his vast Archive to restart the system as it were, and bring life back, in the hopes that it would let him collect more, now imagine that happening, "What if Trazyn's collection got loose?"
Fun video! I do like speculating on these types of scenarios, I think a fun one of these to do would be the Orks or Necron. Also I loved the dataslate readings, Nat did a fantastic job!
Same... the (potentially) millions of years it could take to travel between galaxies would be pretty irrelevant to an immortal collective like the Tyranids. I tend to lean towards the end game hypothesis where they don't entirely leave the galaxies they consume and move on, because a "consumed" galaxy would be brimming with life again in a "short" few million years. If the hive mind's sole purpose is to grow in perpetuity, it would make more sense to either use it to farm biomass, as Leutin suggested, harvest it in cycles (like the Reapers from Mass Effect) or some derivation thereof while extending tendrils towards other galaxies to repeat the process.
@@ComicGladiator the same place life came from when earth was a lifeless, airless ball of rock. A temporarily lifeless world doesn't mean it will stay that way, on cosmic timescales. And that's saying nothing about other worlds in a system becoming habitable and evolving life once conditions change. As our sun increases in luminosity it's entirely possible that we could see moons around the gas giants become habitable, for example. (Additionally, if the Tyranids were actually focused on net positive resource acquisition, they wouldn't bother stripping the atmosphere or water from a world because there's plenty of those elements out in space and it's way easier to get at then pumping it off a deep gravity well like a planet. Water, especially. Water ice is one of the most common molecules in the universe.)
I get a chuckle every time someone says “fighting Tyranids” I’m convinced the sole reason why the Hive Mind haven’t sent their full force into our galaxy is simply because they haven’t accurately estimate how much bio mass is in our galaxy and if it’s even warrant a full-on deployment of such force.
1:27:17 I haven't finished but a bit like Jupiter Awakening (the film) whereby Humans have millions of planets which are like Earth - a farm for the "harvesting" for their potion to make them live indefinitely.
I always thought that maybe the Tyranids started as a type of autonomous exploratory lifeform from another civilization millions of millenia in the past. They were perhaps sent out as a tailor-made, self-replicating organism with the intent of either exploring or flagging new places. Then somewhere along the way, they adapted a bit too much.
Perhaps the Tyranids, if given enough biomass and genetic information, might start collecting it in one spot in the galaxy to do some serious number-crunching and evolution. Then they spit out new bioforms of all sorts built on DNA from all over the galaxy and use the final battles as a test ground for them before packing up for the next galaxy. Wasn’t there some sort of bio tower the Nids were constructing on some world that the Imperium couldn’t figure out? Idk, that would support my idea vaguely if I’m not just making it up.
I think you’re right. The fact that it’s a psychic beacon makes me feel more confident actually. Draw in the hive fleets when they’re ready, start the process of accelerated evolution that makes the regular rate of Tyranid adaptation look slow and clumsy, develop new abilities nobody saw coming.
@@edderz101 because they don't need them, they already know where is our galaxy, if main hive fleet truly exist - it not so far already, it doesn't need any guidelines.
Actually, if the goal of the Necrons is basically to sleep while they wait out the extinction of the other races in the galaxy and the Tyranids just seek to consume all the biomass in the galaxy and then move on to the next galaxy why would either one of them even bother to even consider taking on each other? Their two goals seem to naturally align perfectly.
The Necrons are not a unified force. Theirs generally three separate goals for the Tyranids. For the Silent Kings faction they want to restore their bodies and free their people and in order to do that they need life to continue in the galaxy because theirs no point in having bodies in a galaxy devoid of planets with an active biosphere. Another group is fine as is an likes being what they are, then another group who’s notable character is Orikan the Diviner wish to transcend the physical world altogether and become beings of pure energy like the Catan. For most of them they fight the Tyranids because “that planet is where I keep my stuff”
They align perfectly except those who wants biotransference into a new host. You can't download your consciousness into humans or whatever, if they're all eaten.
unless, and i think Luetin has a point... when the nids win, they might... "move in" to a galaxy. They might turn the entire thing into a sort of nexus/living organism that transmits the will of the hive mind to other tendrils. what we see in 40k, if it is just the tendrils, could actually be just the violent end of their organism. when the violence is done, their 'builder' fleet arrives. it begins smashing rocks together, turning most of the gained biomass into a sort of super synapse. perhaps there exists such a creature in a neighboring galaxy that is currently strategizing the invasion of the milky way. and when/if one arrives here, its entire purpose would be planning for the next galactic hop. maybe these super synapses are also psychic radars that scan for signs of life/sentience. maybe this is what the pharos beacon actually noticed. but my i think my favorite fan theory is that the nids are doing on an intergalactic scale, what kryptman was doing on an galactic scale: depriving some greater creature form accessing biomass/growing its influence.
16:05 The name of the ship cracked me up. Quote: "Here: Out of the mists of history, the legendary Esquilax! A horse with the head of a rabbit and the body... of a rabbit! Oh, it's galloping away..."
Luetin, I listened to this video while I was putting together the play kitchenette for my daughter. It's her birthday. And I remembered the I was listening to another one of your videos while assembling the crib two years ago. Funny how you'll always be part of those big moments.
The last stand of the solar system would make a really cool story. I imagine it something like the Alamo where you have all these legendary figures standing their ground and fighting to the death.
The ability of the Tyranids to absorb the genetic material of the biomass they consume made it supremely reckless of Dante to give Gabriel Seth the feather of Sanguinius on the eve of battle during the events of The Devastation of Baal especially since it also contained the pure blood of Sanguinius. Imagine what would have happened if the Tyranids had absorbed the pure genetic material of The Great Angel and apply that logorythmically to say...a Swarmlord.
I think if you're chaos your best bet is to just entrap large numbers of tyranid bioforms in the warp and possess them. They're basically animals once you disconnect them from the synapse creatures so it shouldn't be too hard. Once you send them back, the WORST case scenario is you have a bunch of organic daemon engines - the best case scenario is the hivemind reconnects and your daemons now have the run of the hive fleet. I suppose the Nids could always evolve an anti-daemon immune system, but that would itself make for some good lore, no? But imagine if Slaneesh got ahold of a Norn Queen - the result of giving them a limitless army of super-psychic tentacle monsters hardly bears imagining.
Very interesting - I enjoyed this video a lot. But it made me wonder about a few things. 1.If the Tyranids could in the future set up planets as biomass farms, why aren’t they doing this already? D Leaving worlds dead has some advantages, but mightn’t it make sense to leave some, at least, producing biomass behind the front lines? 2. Following on from this, do the Tyranids make much use of chlorophyll? Set up either on planets or suitable space stations, that’s a bit of an easy source for biomass. 3. Why are the Tyranids so focused on producing, basically , carnivorous animals? Ecology and biophysics indicates that you need a lot of plants and herbivore to sustain one carnivore, so if the aim is to maximise biomass, why are the Tyranids pursuing what, intuitively at least would seem to be a costly strategy? 4. Does the last point suggest that the goal of the Hive mind is not what we are commonly led to believe? I just want to add that I’m not trying to undermine the concept of the Tyranids here - these are just nice puzzles for writers and fans to grapple with to expand the narrative. Cheers again.
Really great video, love me some nid based exestential horror. A couple of things - i think Hive Fleet Tiamat may well be the 'farm' you are describing, or at least the start of the beacon for the formation of the 'mega swarm'. Also the silent king has been defending the galaxy for quite some time it seems outside the galactic rim, and treats them as the greatest threat to the galaxy. Szarek is the oldest, possibly greatest mind in 40k, and if he is taking it seriously, you know it's a big problem. I have to wonder how many of the awakened necron dynasties are being sent directly to the front lines against the hive. I think an alliance between the Lion and Szarek/Guilleman and Sarek is more likely than anything else, at least to push back leviathan in the short term.
Because the Tyranids are a fucking meme. They've got the depth of a puddle and they exist solely to be basically the equiv. of a saturday morning cartoon villain for the *actual* factions in the setting to beat up on. The super over the top prose making the Tyranids out to be the biggest threat ever is just to keep people that care about that sort of thing engaged, because there can be no victory for the Tyranids, if only because GW knows now that conducting something like an End Times scenario for 40k ala what they did for Fantasy is financial suicide for their brand.
I have the idea that EOM was a Tyranid asset and IOM was a paddock for Tyranid, but CHAOS foiled it thus the current IOM was born due to the meddling CHAOS.
The datalogs were simply awesome. In my eyes, it's one of your best videos so far, thanks to these logs! Thanks for the great content! I can't wait for the next video!
Luetin you've been putting out a lot of great content lately. I look forward to seeing what more you have planned. Will you go through other factions in this galactic domination series? Edit: so you make it clear this will be a full series. Makes me wonder about a video on what if the Imperium dominated the 40k galaxy? It's counter-intuitive because it already does in a sense but I mean a true domination and not the slow decline and stagnation we have at present, I'd be interested to hear your take on what that would look like.
There's an absolutely legendary quote from the DoW II: Elite Mod, where SM in their matchup against Nids, will sometimes say "You'll find me a sour meal, alien!". I like to think that in an event when the Imperium would face certain doom and be consumed by the Tyranids, the human nature would eventually show its ugliest part, which in the realm of 40K is probably something that would even make the gods of chaos uncomfortable. Just what exactly that might be is irrelevant to the argument. What really matters is that if you look at all of the factions in the universe and speculate what to expect from each one when you push them to their absolute limit, then you obviously have the Necrons who were by all means pushed to their limit and showed exactly what they're capable of. With the humanity finding itself at an impossible odds, there isn't a line that they wouldn't cross either, but while as Luetin correctly pointed out, they would mostly turn against each other, there would be chaos and confusion, there is always the propability that they would not, and a capable individual or a group would enact a "plan" that would make even Kryptman look like a reasonable guy...
The tyranid win condition seems to me like a quote from "The Shape of the Nightmare to Come", where a new ork-tyranid hybrid ravages billions of worlds before rushing to a seemengly random galaxy, and those who observed that galaxy, can see it´s light slowly dim from millenia to come.
I think that it is potentially possible for a swarm of tyranids to evolve to a point where other tyranids view them as hostile, similar to ant colonies. Not sure how this would work, but i think it would be interesting to have a hive fleet hostile to the others.
@@datsolisYea but on a bigger scale Like a tendril/fleet just evolving so much, another tendril/fleet views them hostile Not just one a single planet scale
They're essentially an organic paperclip maximizer, if they determined their process was more efficient than an enemy hive then they might assimilate them to speed up the conversion of the galaxy's biomass. No hostility, just efficiency. Besides that I don't see a reason for them to fight.
I thought my weekend started out good when I saw Oculus Imperia posted part 2 of The Betrayal at Calth, now it’s fantastic with a Tyranid video from Luetin. Great as usual!
The Fall of Shadowbrink is really a cool look on how the Tyranids have dealt with Chaos. With four greater daemons of each God being defeated by the Hive Mind and as far as I know no Swarm Lord was involved. I have always personaly seen the Nids as either a naturaly evolved super organism or as a fail safe made by the Old Ones. But those are only my personal theories. Anyway thanks Luetin, entertaining as always.
I think that the failsafe made by the Old Ones theory has legs, even if it’s only used to give a sort of Noah’s Ark-style theology to the Genestealer Cults. “Hey, we pissed off something really powerful with all of the constant warfare and it’s gonna wipe the galaxy clean with a huge flood. BUT if you join us you get reborn after the flood recedes in a perfect utopia”, that style of thing. The Tyranids could even create a few pleasure worlds for Genestealer Cults instead of just killing them all the time to act as propaganda.
In line with W40k, Tyranids are most likely equivalent of Men of Iron for some exogalactic Old Ones that had gone wild. Though Ian Douglas in 'Galactic Corps' proposed - as explanation to Fermi Paradox - ultraaggresive species that is driven by extreme Darvinian paradigm to kill off all competition, in time becoming Complex Autonomous System no longer aware what and why it is actually doing.
14:04 ---> do we know if tau did encounter necron lore wise? because in a hypothetical situation where some tau would happen to to survive an encounter and learn about blackstone, we could assume they would want to try replicating that (especially as tau themselves don't rely on psykers, so, it would only be pros and no cons for them)
I remember from Pharos book of Horus Heresy when Pharos beacon is overloaded during the conflict with Night Lords there is this breath taking epilogue suggesting this event triggered Tyranids probe and brought their interest in 40k galaxy.
There is another instance of the Tau defeating the Tyranids that Luetin (and many others) forgot about, albeit it involves the Farsight Enclaves, not the Tau Empire proper. A tendril of Hive Fleet Kraken once attacked the Enclaves core world. Through sheer weight of numbers, the tendril overran Tau defenses and completely enveloped the capital world of Vior'los. However, ultimately defeated the hive fleet by developing a fast-acting genetic virus that caused the entire Hive Fleet to break apart when it absorbed the Tau that had injected it into themselves. This event is very interesting, and it's a shame it's not talked about more because it's the only instance I know of where a virus attack isn't just effective against the Tyrannid, but catastrophically destructive. It suggests that "poisoning the food" might be a valid (if risky) strategy when dealing with the Tyrannids. It is also quite impressive that the Enclaves managed to fight an entire splinter fleet by themselves as, while it is nowhere near the size of the ones the Imperium faces, you have to remember the Enclave is tiny even compared to a faction like the Dark Eldar.
Poisoning the food. "Fire breaks" that are created once a hive fleet had stopped to it said "poisoned food", some 4 to 5 systems forward from their direction. With everybody "Tyranid side" being turned soldier, "poisoned" and thrown into fight, whole everybody "non-Tyranid sode" being evacuated OR turned navy personnel and also thrown into fight.
That's actually a common concept to defeat an overwhelming enemy in a lot of fiction. But, just like with real life organisms, bacteria, insects, even rodents - survivors and their offspring might develop an immunity. This works once and might never work again. You might destroy one Hive Fleet and the Overmind absorbs survivors that developed an immunity back into the swarm, giving everyone else immunity against this weapon. In the end, naturally, it's whatever the author wants the outcome to be.
Personally I think there are several options and you touched upon all of them. Just in basic 1.) They really harvest the galaxies (multiple) and hivefleet tendrils are those mentioned "probes" to test viability of the next galaxy in that direction, as time itself is not a concern for the fleet if you have galaxywide biomass factories 2.) They consume the galaxy and hibernate or go to a enegry saver mode while traveling to the other ones just taking chance (that would again suggest they already consumed multiple galaxies and the whole fleet is just ONE of the countless ones spreading all directions from their first point of origin) 3.) Or they really consumed entire universe already and Milky Way is the last one to be eaten ( that would explain why the fleet tendrils arrive from multiple directions and even from the "bottom" of the galaxy) and in that case they would eat this galaxy and then slowly starve, leaving entire universe a dead rock until the heat-death of the universe itself
Loved the video as always, a masterpiece. I do have a thought that was not covered in the speculation section. I know its a lesser held belief but an interesting one in my mind. What if in fact, the Tyranids are an artificial construct. A collective precursor for another organization that do not themselves take to the battlefield. Another sci-fi universe to use this concept is that of the Pacific Rim, but in the case of the Tyranids expanded to the 40k scale. Purely destructive agents sent to scour resistance and will eventually consume itself for the benefit of the end benefactor. The theory in my mind is something to the effect of this. Following the War in Heaven, some of the Old one genetic master manipulators who survived and were forced from our galaxy have reconstituted in a neighboring galaxy. Driven to revenge and justice against a galaxy full of species of their own creation who in turn murdered them and drove them from it. Old ones, seeking to wipe the board clean and try again. The Tyranids have a means of detecting Necron worlds meaning they have inherent knowledge of them that other species in our own galaxy struggle to achieve. Just a theory, but one I enjoy playing out in thought.
I wonder what happens in a scenario when they consume everything and they are all that remains. Do the turn on each other in a massive civil war or would they hibernate until something came along.
They remind me of stellaris the scourge basically the same thing they are running from something I would guess a stronger foe and trying to evolve to face it plus they love all you can eat buffet
@Luetin09: Thank you for your contribution and commentary on your channel. Your library of knowledge is astounding to me. I’m a complete newcomer to Warhammer and only that through the knowledge acquired by random watches of your videos. I hope your work is recognised for its academic brilliance. Compared to normal academic study, eg, history of Christianity,, your work goes beyond that. Anyway, I digress- thanks for the channel!
I pulled away from 40k for the best part of a year, still can’t stop with your videos dude. Keep em coming, looking forward to you getting back to your post apocalyptic series though!
"All subjects incinerated,"? Emperor damn you Luetin... Seriously though kudos to your VA, she does great work. She's got a delicate tone that really sells strength and vulnerability at the same time. Perfect for scared imperial citizens staring Grimdark in the face!
Great video! ALL are terrifying scenarios. Tyranids have always been the greatest threat but as you point out we do not know what they think “success” is.
I can only see the Tyranids as the most realistic end game faction. You cant tell me that something like this that has stuff like genestealer cults under their belt, on top of sheer battlefield terror and numbers is going to lose. No way, its only inevitable.
The ending was quite horrifying. What makes it worse was she was praising the Emperor only to get incinerated. But if she was praising the Four Armed Emperor I would have felt better.
I have a feeling that if anyone could defeat the Tyranids, it would be Nurgle. He would probably be the only one who could craft some kind of disease that would actually be fatal to them and override their adaptations permanently, or create something that was constantly evolving one step ahead of them for maximum damage
Yeah it’d be chaos and the necrons. Especially nurgle but both factions have little to no biomass for them to consume and both at the end of the day need living beings in the galaxy for one reason or another. It’d be a really long fight but they’d win out in the end. Or make it not worth it and force the tyranids to leave
Amazing stuff. That last audio log gave me the chills because I'm 100% sure there's a genestealer on board their ship and wherever they landed will be dead in a century or two.
An advantage that the other races have over the tyranids, is that they aren't very efficient. Most of the mass and energy in the galaxy is in non organic compounds. The other races can use these to generate ships and living space and food and population. The nids, just use the biomass. Which is less than 1% of the mass in the galaxy. The imperium can put a domed colony, on a world wiped clean by the nids, and use local resources and energy from the local star, to build and grow and repopulate. The tyranids are incredibly wastefull. The nids are like a nomadic hunter gatherer civilisation, all the other races are settlers and farmers.
After listening to this I just had following random Idea in my head. Tyrannids: "We cant beat the Necrons or Chaos! What can we do!?" "The Way of the Farseer holds many Powers some would deem, unnatural." - said Darth Eldar "Is it possible to learn these powers?!" - asked the Zonethrope. "Not from the Hivemind!" Eldar Gods holding Dominion over the Warp, and beating the Necrons into a million Years Slumber ... I am very sure the Nids would love to learn to do that :D
So, I'm not a physicist, if there's one in here, correct me. Assuming there's a given amount of biomass, that biomass has a certain amount of energy saven within it. Now if you take that biomass and create whatever creatures from it, you'd spend some energy in the form of the work required for that creation. If you then re-absorb that creature back into your ... sludge(?) and make something else, you again spend energy etc. So, can the Nids run out of energy or are they a perpetuum mobile?
I have a request - long-form content where you tell a story of how each race conquers the galsxy and what happens to each race subsequently. You have the perfect speculative mind for something really cool
I think we need a video dedicated to comparing the technological advances of each faction. Something doesn't add up about the Necrons.. they basically won the war in heaven (against psyker races I might add) and their technology is unmatched according to 40K lore, yet they aren't accomplishing much.
I wonder if it would be possible for the hive mind to reach such a psychic mass that it could collapse on itself into some kinda of psychic black hole, destroying itself.
Watching this for the third time now. WTF is wrong with me? Tyranids are just such a cool concept. And Luetins narration makes the whole thing even more epic.
I really like this video. I keep coming back because I’m starting to realize the Tyrannids are my favorite faction. Overtime their lore compiled together, they are a massive nigh ultimately unassailable threat to everyone. It will literally take a long lasting alliance for centuries to stop them, and you know there will be war on the side, and I just see that happening. Nids are going to eat everyone, starve chaos off, and if they obtain enough biomass from convergence and consolidation from all hive fleets, they might have enough time before chaos implodes in the warp. Leaving just in time to move on and leave the Necrons with a shattered irreparable galaxy, left to wallow in the their own madness. Perfect 40k ending. The Tyrannids might be the only one’s to have a chance for a net win in the bigger picture.
Luetin my man you are the lore king. I love your ability to draw from such a massive body of knowledge and speculate so accutely. Absolutely captivating
thoughts; these are awesome. you and a few other super lore fans are the entire reason i care about 40k lore, and over the years ive actually learned a ton off lore from you guys, its really nice listens ^^
the main issue i see with tyranids is that they rely on biomass, and destroying biomass is insanely easy compared to creating and gaining it. so if you lose more biomass than there is ready to harvest on a planet you would lose troops continually (and it is garenteed you will see more biomass being destroyed in an extermination defence than there would be left to change into biomass.
Seeing the *all subjects incinerated* flash across the screen broke my heart man. To think that they had even the slightest miracle of finding a planet and the Machanicus just determined that they were to far gone. Welcome to 40K
imo this is why big E was so hurry to end the crusade, didnt pet the fallen primarchs and was so brutal to humanity .was all a strugle for mankind survival. i think he was blind to the herecy possibility due to Tzeentch. (as i have mentioned to a past video of yours as well) ,

Give me Tyranids vs the biggest weed-growing planet. Let's see what Rowboogie can do..
All Praise The Lore God!!!
You nailed it.
Once they rule the galaxy, they put on their straw hats and overalls and become vegetarian farmers, living simple, peaceful lives.
Intergalactic garbage disposal like the Langaleers from Stephen King
We’re actually in the third iteration of this process.
I didn’t know the Tyranids thought of the Tau in the same way I do 😩
Soylent Blue, wonder how they taste 🤔
Tyranids are the snowball effect. The more area they cover, the bigger they grow.
@@kingtonsiljockey528 tastes like chicken^^
If the Nids can eat enough Celestials that they can reverse engineer their mind control effects, whole planets might start instantly surrendering to the Greater Good (of the nids).
I like how for the Orks the Tyranid invasion is not a crisis, but rather an opportunity.

No a solid nid fleet wins. The fact they grow better on a biological level utterly trumps the orks getting bigger an stronger
My personal speculation on the Tyrranid end game also ties into the reason for their coming to our galaxy in the first place. The idea comes entirely from outside the lore and is all because I grew up with a bee hive in my back yard, but the behavior of real life hives seems a likely inspiration for tyrranid motives and engagement is engagement so ill drop it anyway ; )
Bees reproduce on an individual scale but one of the most fascinating things to witness is how they reproduce on the scale of a new hive.
That is an impressive line of thinking I had never considered
Fascinating stuff re the bees, thanks for that
This makes more sense than almost anything else I've heard just on your biological reasoning.
I like this theory, it adds a a layer of depth that is had to create for animalistic creatures like the nids.
God damn that's a long comment! I like the theory and the reasoning behind it plus I learned something new. Well done!
The thought of the Tyranid Hive Mind devouring/recycling the soul as well as the body is genuinely disturbing beyond belief. Sounds like something out of Berserk.

same
omg can you imagine the souls of creatures from their previous feeding trying to scream out warn us but all people hear is the screams of a Tyrranid as it rips apart the populace? ahh and then having to watch as the body its trapped in toss itself into the digestion pools and feeling themselves melt again and thier soul gets dragged back up into a hive ship and queued up for another body...

The ultimate form of the tyranid, in my mind at least, is an organic Dyson sphere.
More like the ultimate form of a ctan. I guess the star wouldn't last long though and it would have to migrate to another one.
Thought you meant the vacuum for a second
Really happy with the ending of this and a few of the previous videos. No insanely loud hardrock music. Probably not alone in listening to your videos when I go to bed. Nothing worse than falling asleep and being blasted awake at the end of a nigh 2h video.

Nids winning is the equivalent of "rocks fall everyone dies".
Imagine the nids using the emperor’s consumed dna to enhance their gene stealer cult process and their psychic creatures!
Better than chaos I guess

The last recording right at the end brought shivers to my spine. Great work once again.
The dataslate segments were a great addition to the video and to the horror of the tyranids. Excellent work Luetin!
I've always imagined the Tyranids moving through galaxies like a slime mold through a petri dish.
Same... the (potentially) millions of years it could take to travel between galaxies would be pretty irrelevant to an immortal collective like the Tyranids.
@@OJAbrey They turn every planet into a ball of rock with no water or atmosphere, where is the new life coming from?

And that's saying nothing about other worlds in a system becoming habitable and evolving life once conditions change. As our sun increases in luminosity it's entirely possible that we could see moons around the gas giants become habitable, for example.
(Additionally, if the Tyranids were actually focused on net positive resource acquisition, they wouldn't bother stripping the atmosphere or water from a world because there's plenty of those elements out in space and it's way easier to get at then pumping it off a deep gravity well like a planet. Water, especially. Water ice is one of the most common molecules in the universe.)
I get a chuckle every time someone says “fighting Tyranids”
I’m convinced the sole reason why the Hive Mind haven’t sent their full force into our galaxy is simply because they haven’t accurately estimate how much bio mass is in our galaxy and if it’s even warrant a full-on deployment of such force.

“But, of course, sadly, not Rogal Dorn, as he is dead.”
Love the quiet Imperial Fist shade. 😂
I thought that was pretty funny too. Can't help but think that was him ribbing Valrak
I believe you're thinking of hive fleet tiamats psychic beacons near the fringe

Their two goals seem to naturally align perfectly.
The Necrons are not a unified force. Theirs generally three separate goals for the Tyranids. For the Silent Kings faction they want to restore their bodies and free their people and in order to do that they need life to continue in the galaxy because theirs no point in having bodies in a galaxy devoid of planets with an active biosphere. Another group is fine as is an likes being what they are, then another group who’s notable character is Orikan the Diviner wish to transcend the physical world altogether and become beings of pure energy like the Catan.
And they eat "everything" even down to bacteria, minerals, and the atmosphere. There isn't much to rule in a galaxy of useless empty rocks
After what they did to Warhammer Fantasy, please no.
They would need to lead up to it mcu pre Infinity War style or it would be a dud
It would make for a pretty cool "what if" story
WE GET ANOTHER VIDEO ALREADY? Praise the Luetin. Thanks for including me in your amazing video!!!
greatly appreciate your contribution. Added so much to this vid.
The voice of the Inquisitor? If so well done.
I think the Emperor would have to step in too burn the hive fleet down like he did to Nurgles Garden

Leaving worlds dead has some advantages, but mightn’t it make sense to leave some, at least, producing biomass behind the front lines?
How writers have passed on writing Tyranid farm worlds where humans live in the worst possible nightmare is beyond me.
Farmimg humans makes no sense at all. To little return on investment. Better to grow some mushrooms or plants to maximize biomass creation.

Love that read!
I think that it is potentially possible for a swarm of tyranids to evolve to a point where other tyranids view them as hostile, similar to ant colonies.
Not sure how this would work, but i think it would be interesting to have a hive fleet hostile to the others.
I like the idea of the Tyranids not simply being one single hive.
Nids fight nids all the time
Loser gets assimilated
@@datsolisYea but on a bigger scale
Like a tendril/fleet just evolving so much, another tendril/fleet views them hostile
Not just one a single planet scale
They're essentially an organic paperclip maximizer, if they determined their process was more efficient than an enemy hive then they might assimilate them to speed up the conversion of the galaxy's biomass. No hostility, just efficiency. Besides that I don't see a reason for them to fight.
The Emperor’s Loremaster returns with another brilliant offering! I love the Tyranids and the idea of the Tyranids in general. Great work Luetin!
but could a seven nation army hold them back??
Awesome episode! Love the audiofiles it gives an very vidid picture of the scenes described.
I absolutely love Tyranids lore above all else. I have liked and shared 😊
@@ecta9604this idea is eerily similar to the Precursors and The Flood from Halo.
Their numbers imply they haven't been around long. Trillions of units per fleet, whereas the earth's biomass is 500 billion tons.
A 1 hour 30 minute video on the tyranids taking over the galaxy??? Count me in on watching it!

I bet Nurgle was taking notes in his garden
Poisoning the food.
"Fire breaks" that are created once a hive fleet had stopped to it said "poisoned food", some 4 to 5 systems forward from their direction. With everybody "Tyranid side" being turned soldier, "poisoned" and thrown into fight, whole everybody "non-Tyranid sode" being evacuated OR turned navy personnel and also thrown into fight.
Yeah, im honestly surprised Luetin on this one. I thought he extensively researched the topics he discussed?
That's actually a common concept to defeat an overwhelming enemy in a lot of fiction. But, just like with real life organisms, bacteria, insects, even rodents - survivors and their offspring might develop an immunity. This works once and might never work again. You might destroy one Hive Fleet and the Overmind absorbs survivors that developed an immunity back into the swarm, giving everyone else immunity against this weapon.
In the end, naturally, it's whatever the author wants the outcome to be.
wow thats bloody amazing, its like the independence day moment, poison the heart and the rest dies off.
Where do the Tyranids come from? What are their goals (apart from more Biomass)?
Excited to learn.
Thanks for all the great work!
Extragalactic, they've entered the Galaxy from 3 different vectors
Personally I think there are several options and you touched upon all of them.
Just in basic
1.) They really harvest the galaxies (multiple) and hivefleet tendrils are those mentioned "probes" to test viability of the next galaxy in that direction, as time itself is not a concern for the fleet if you have galaxywide biomass factories
2.) They consume the galaxy and hibernate or go to a enegry saver mode while traveling to the other ones just taking chance (that would again suggest they already consumed multiple galaxies and the whole fleet is just ONE of the countless ones spreading all directions from their first point of origin)
3.) Or they really consumed entire universe already and Milky Way is the last one to be eaten ( that would explain why the fleet tendrils arrive from multiple directions and even from the "bottom" of the galaxy) and in that case they would eat this galaxy and then slowly starve, leaving entire universe a dead rock until the heat-death of the universe itself
you've earned my sub, THIS history is incredible
My goodness I envy you, I would love to go back to discovering luetin again. His lore videos are so immersive and in depth.
They were just vibing in the empty void before
I expect they load up into their hive fleets again and then go into hibernation while they make towards the next galaxy to eat.
they'd leave the galaxy and go into million years sleep or something.
They remind me of stellaris the scourge basically the same thing they are running from something I would guess a stronger foe and trying to evolve to face it plus they love all you can eat buffet
they fight until only one hive fleet remains, the strongest survives, and move on to the next galaxy to begin the process again

Thanks again for a fantastic video and food for thought.
Plus, wow! Space Aussies!
Amazing video, as always.
I, particularly, loved the dataslate addition.
Amazing stuff. That last audio log gave me the chills because I'm 100% sure there's a genestealer on board their ship and wherever they landed will be dead in a century or two.
In a way Tyranids winning and consuming the whole universe is basically the path of less suffering.
Heresy!!
That Eldar saw his doll would be stuck in the Tyranid Hivemind and suffer, just like Slaanesh.
What can we do!?"
"The Way of the Farseer holds many Powers some would deem, unnatural." - said Darth Eldar
"Is it possible to learn these powers?!" - asked the Zonethrope.
"Not from the Hivemind!"
Eldar Gods holding Dominion over the Warp, and beating the Necrons into a million Years Slumber ...
How could this question possibly warrant an hour and a half answer? I can't wait to find out :D
I would like to hear about the orks, like what would they even do when they destroyed everything. Endless infighting ?
Probably that and some more adventurous ones wandering off to waaagh other galaxies, who knows
I’d love to see your head cannon on if tau took over and united the galaxy in a video.

I think we need a video dedicated to comparing the technological advances of each faction. Something doesn't add up about the Necrons.. they basically won the war in heaven (against psyker races I might add) and their technology is unmatched according to 40K lore, yet they aren't accomplishing much.

The Tyrannids might be the only one’s to have a chance for a net win in the bigger picture.

thoughts; these are awesome. you and a few other super lore fans are the entire reason i care about 40k lore, and over the years ive actually learned a ton off lore from you guys, its really nice listens ^^
the main issue i see with tyranids is that they rely on biomass, and destroying biomass is insanely easy compared to creating and gaining it.
so if you lose more biomass than there is ready to harvest on a planet you would lose troops continually (and it is garenteed you will see more biomass being destroyed in an extermination defence than there would be left to change into biomass.
A fantastic video as always sir! I like the female voice actor too!
