Lawson's issue is not Red Bull; it is that the rest of the teams are rather lazy and/or reluctant with moving on to new drivers. It is also likely that teams want drivers with "certainty" as crashes are expensive and eat into a limited budget. That makes teams risk averse. We need more teams on track and at least some changes to the budget cap (such as reserves for parts and maintenance).
Alfa becoming Audi in 2026 means 1 less team that can sustain rookie drivers ( they will also have the cash to chase experienced A grade drivers ) plus HAAS only have mature age drivers now. Lawson and Oscars results prove that rookies can be competitive drivers in there 1st season ( the downside been rookies won't be given long to prove themselves from now on as we saw at Alphatauri)

If I’m Aston Martin I immediately try to sign him, perfect driver to build around in this market. Red Bull are idiots, sticking with Ricciardo (fair enough) and a driver who is not good enough for Red Bull
Hot take: No one know exactly if the Alpha Tauri car is bad because there is no consistency in the drivers skill. Imagine if the car is actually good enough to fight for p10 and p9 for most races, but because Yuki jumps from p20 to p12 every race we think the car is trash and whenever Yuki gets points or close to that we celebrate him for doing what the car is capable of

@@WilsonTheArchitectI think that Devris was probably just below average, not horrible. But, to be fair, his competition was Latifi, so maybe his Monza performance wasn’t as impressive as we all thought. So Yuki could very well be doing just average, and would be beaten if Gasly was in the other seat
It's all Marko's fault for insisting on De Vries based on one race performance. It got even worse when they placed PR sunshine Ricciardo in the seat, as now they have to choose between him and a kid who's on fire. If Lawson ends up joining any other team, Marko should step down from his position.

There is no long term future in Red Bull for Yuki, won't matter because when Honda moves to Aston Martin in 2026, they are probably taking him with them to replace Stroll who is already giving signs he is on his way out. They will also want Daniel due to his experience to help with the re-building of the renamed Alpha Tauri team next year. Lawson, as good as he is so far, is the odd man out for 2024 at least. He will need to wait for 2025 or later or join Williams.

The situation for Red Bull is more complex than what was outlined in the video. Even experienced drivers like Ricciardo and Perez have struggled to keep up with Verstappen. When compared to Verstappen, almost any driver appears less skilled. This is compounded by the immense pressure of driving for a 'traditional' top 3 team, causing many, like Gasly and Albon, to falter. While Perez faced a slump, he managed to recover most of his form. AlphaTauri serves as a talent pool for Red Bull, and Ricciardo's performance during Silverstone testing demonstrated his ability to quickly approach Verstappen's times. For Helmut Marko, choosing Ricciardo seems like an obvious decision. Tsunoda has been performing well, and replacing him with Lawson might seem unjust. I can understand why, after the De Vries experiment failed, Marko opted for Ricciardo. De Vries appeared promising but couldn't deliver. Without testing, it's challenging to assess whether someone like Lawson has the potential for F1 success. If they had let go of De Vries during the summer break, they could have tested Lawson. However, introducing a rookie with no F1 experience in Hungary might have seemed riskier than going with Ricciardo. On the other hand, Ricciardo's abrupt departure and the decision to pair a rookie with Verstappen caused the musical chairs situation at Red Bull. Sergeant's father's involvement as a major investor in the Williams team likely played a role in securing his seat for 2024, so that wasn't a major surprise. Overall, I'm quite impressed with Lawson's F1 performance. If either Tsunoda or Ricciardo underperform in 2023, Marko has a reputation for making changes, and there's a possibility that Lawson could secure a seat in 2024...
Nice video Andy. I’m interested mainly in why you feel it’s a good thing for the big teams to have their driver programmes. Not so sure myself although I’m no expert.
Initially it seemed a good idea because I thought it might help talented working class drivers get a better chance (the success of Hamilton and maybe Mansell too shows how much better F1 would be if everyone got a fair chance). Thus I thought they’d set up their own karting schools and develop talent from early on-you know the kind of thing which would have found us several Tommy Byrnes. But the impression I get is that they don’t do that at all. Instead they just take first pick from the current establishment of rich kids and pay drivers. This further strengthens their competitive position and makes it yet more difficult for smaller teams to discover top drivers like Toleman did with Senna. What do you think?
I think he’s looking really good relative to Tsunoda because he has had a combination of bad luck and a mistake. Id like to see him drive more just to see how it goes. He seems like a good driver and a good dude but I think it’s a bit early to jump to conclusions of him being THAT good.
Tsunoda’s not that special either, only teammate he’s ever consistently beaten is De Vries Meanwhile Ricciardo outqualified and outraced him on his first race back And for those who bring up Spa, track limits for quali and then gambling on rain like McLaren did for the race…
I wouldn't rush him into a car next year. They can give him a property year of preparation next year, then give him the drive for 2025. There is literally no rush and no other red bull driver seems viable.
From RBR's perspective, they're better off holding on to Ricciardo and Lawson. Yuki might be better off in Williams. I think that's best for all the drivers and both teams.
What's the point of all the Red Bull junior drivers when they don't get a chance. Tsunoda isn't good enough for the 2nd Red Bull seat so why keep him on Ricciardo has more value for the new sponsor and Lawson looks to be the real deal . To keep Honda happy take Iwasa as a reserve driver.

My guess, which ever wins the battle between Danny or Yuki take checo`s seat in 2025, the other one stays where they are with Lawson lining up next to them.
I've heard that Sargeant got his seat because his father paid for it, plus he is an American. I agree that Liam Lawson should have an F1 seat for the 2024 season. Tsunoda is clearly not cutting it in his third season and because of that I think they got rid of DeVries in order to get in Ricciardo. If Tsunoda had been performing better I think they may have given DeVries more of a chance, because DeVries wasn't too far off Tsunoda for pace and it was his rookie season.
Simply put, Lawson is just that good. Not picking him, and choosing a has been driver like Ricciardo, woukd be like Alpine overlooking Piastri, which means, now that Lawson has shown he is a real talent, and a 22 year old, a lot of teams may end up eyeing him. And Ricciardo?... I doubt it.
Not going to happen with Honda, Red Bull isn't going to drop Yuki as an active front line driver until the end of 2025. Those whispers were from Lawson fans. In fact, the legit whispers coming out is that AT confirming Yuki for next year at this GP weekend. Red Bull is going to have to choose between Lawson or Rick.
RB+AT should have VER+TSU+RIC+LAW, dropping Perez, who is underperforming quite badly and is not on ascending trajectory. All others here seem to have room for (bigger or smaller) improvement, while PER is just like throwing a D6 dice for each race, while he can roll maximum 4 on it.
Perez would destroy Yuki over the course of a season. Yuki has done absolutely nothing impressive in 3 years in the sport. And is almost behind in the championship to a guy that has only 3 races in the same car lol.
5:26 one of the worst before the upgrades. The upgrades have created a better car that Tsunoda hasn't benefited from yet. Lawson didn't drive the tractor.
I fully agree with you about Tsunoda, Sargeant and Lawson. I would pair Ricciardo with Lawson so that you have a real benchmark for Lawson to improve next to. And Sargeant is not worthy of F1 and i don´t see him becoming a superstar if given more time.
It doesn't sound like there is much hope for Lawson despite an incredible performance. Truly the best he could have done on track. As they say though, 3 in 1 does not go. It's a shame if rumors are true, it will be the third time he is passed over for the seat. It's just wasted talent at this point.
What are the chances, F1 post confriming that AT is Yuki and Danny with Liam as reserve for 24 just whilst I was reading comments. If Liam gets poached, that could have been a short sighted decision
If you dont want to compete stay with the old drivers who haven't competed. Why take a punt that could add excitement to your team, doesn't make sense I guess
The only thing stopping Lawson getting that seat full time is money unfortunately. The only reason Alpha Tauri have stuck by Yuki despite some very below par performances is because of their relationship with Honda. And the only reason they'd want to get Ricciardo in that seat is because of his marketability and also because Horner is in love with him.
"Red Bull" is no longer the "hottest ticket" in town. Since Christian Horner has effectively removed his outfit (RBR) from the equation the "move up" route is no longer an option. On the one hand, you can't blame him, dominance in Formula one is rarely gained and maintained with some aspiring young "hotshot" in the second car. So I wouldn't be too surprised if Liam Lawson is tempted to explore alternative avenues. His statement in Singapore, "I will not settle for anything less than a seat in F1 in 2024," was pretty stark warning to Red Bull. As for Williams, I don't think they're very keen on Red Bull "parking" one of their junior drivers with them, even if RB pay for it (they refused to sign Albon unless he severed all ties with RB).
@@mikespearwood3914 Oh, he did say it... in a one of his post race interviews. His exact words were, "I don't think I can settle for anything less now." It wasn't the one on Sky F1, I've seen it later on Channel 4 I believe and thought to myself, "Wow, that's a pretty bold statement, young man." ;) Whatever his contractual obligations to Red Bull may be, if they won't give him a clear perspective pronto he has every right to look elsewhere, Red Bull isn't the only show in town and real top talent is always in high demand... Liam seems to be head and shoulders above anyone to come out of Red Bull's Junior Team since Max Verstappen. Not only is he fast as f*ck but also "cool as cucumber", calm and level-headed, he hasn't put a foot wrong in his three outings, a pretty rare trait in a young driver.
Williams is saying Sargent will return, not sure why but they seem firm on that. A third option is Austin Martin. AM will be under pressure from sponsors and investors not named Stroll to to get a better driver in the second seat. Lance looks like he's kind of done, he just does not look like he's enjoying himself or that he still has the passion. Lawson would be an option should Lance retire or his father buy him a seat in LMP/Indy. Lance has to be getting tired of everyone slamming him as a crap driver and Alonso absolutely embarrassing him on the track. His father is very competitive and it has to be frustrating for him -(and his co-investors and sponsors)- watching AM drop like a stone down the Constructor Standings. Austin Martin the car company that Stroll invested in is losing money hand over fist and that does not help alleviate the pressure the Strolls are under focusing on F1.
When you consider the entire background story of why Williams chose Sargeant, you'll understand why they would keep him. 1. He was promoted 1 year ahead of plans(originally planned to promote to F1 in 2024) because of the 2022 silly season. With De Vries picked by AT, Williams gave Sargeant the conditions, gain enough SL points to promote by the end of the year and he's in. Williams promoting him amidst Alpine failing to secure their junior driver a seat is a subtle move to other junior drivers that the Williams academy is viable. 2. Williams is fine with letting Sargeant cook in F1 to get the experience he needs and to get used to the F1 environment. James already said it, as long as he shows improvements he keeps his seat. 3. Williams' plans are all long term plans. Between their need to upgrade their facilities and their need to attract strong engineers into the team, its all stuff that will take years to happen. They would gain a lot more pace overall from getting a solid engineering team/infrastructure than they would signing the second coming of Aryton Senna. Not to mention other factors such as junior drivers having little to no testing time(Sargeant's first F1 laps were done last year), its really unfair to compare rookies like him on his 1st year against strong veterans like Albon. Not everyone is a Max Verstappen.
@@junsengjs I don't think Sargent should be compared to Max, or Lewis, or Alonso. I do think he should be compared to drivers like Russel, Norris, Charles... in their rookie seasons though. The canyon of difference between Logan and Piastri is much more than the car or team. Look at Piastri's early season when Mclaren was slow and how Oscar was still able to our driver the car. You present a false choice between upgrading a driver and getting engineers. Driver salaries are not counted against the budget cap. In fact having a stronger second driver helps engineers develop the car. How do you understand problems and potential improvements when the main issue is the driver? Albon has shown the Williams is not a total crap car and that Logan is under performing the car. Lawson has a worse car and yet manages to out perform Logan with far less experience and under tougher circumstances. Logan has two thirds of a season under his belt there is no excuse for under performing a last minute replacement rookie with three races in a slower car. At no point this season have I looked at Sargent and said 'OK, there's a future podium challenger'. At no point has he looked like it is just rookie mistakes but he's improving. He is a lot closer to Latifi than a driver deserving a seat.
The best route for RBR would be to promote Tsunoda as a real sink-or-swim moment next year, giving Lawson the Alpha Tauri seat. If Tsunoda flames out, he's been given every chance and they can choose Lawson or Ricciardo for their second seat
No lawson for the second seat, i am afraid the same will happen with lawson what happened to albon.. yuki or daniel in the rbr and the other one in the AT next to lawson.. when the RB fails put the other one in.. i want lawson to succeed and not rush him into the red bull
Tsunoda has never beaten a single team mate over the course of a season (and Lawson might still beat him this season lol) why would he ever deserve a RB seat, wtf. Max would destroy his career in the first 4 races.
I'd say it's time for perez to move on. Bring ricc back to red bull for a couple of years and put lawson in the AT next to tsunoda. In a couple of years 1 of the 2 maybe ready for RB. And Danny ricc has time to find another seat
AT has a different set up from Redbull, AT the moment is about their new sponsors What n who the sponsors want It has gone far from the very reason they exist..
Look I like Lawson. I think he has potential there but you all have to get that unless he really pulls that car beyond its limitations he was never getting that seat next year. Yuki is Honda's boy and as long as Red Bull have a contract with them that seat will always be taken by japanese driver. I don't like it but thems the politics of an F1 race team. Now I know that sounds a bit racist, but its a fact of doing business with any manufacturer in F1 that they like some home boys in the car for promotional use, not to mention its well known that it has always been part of the contract process. It is the same reason Takuma Sato was in that Honda race team so long. If Lawson did an Alonso, scoring a point back when the points only went to the top six, in a Minardi. The worst POS on track scored a point and it showed that he could muscle that thing to perform. Unfortunately scoring a 9th and finishing where the updated car was expected to finish just isn't enough these days, especially if you have sweet F all backing in sponsorship money because you come from a racing backwater cou ntry like New Zealand where the only thing sponsors give a damn about is Rugby, Cricket and sailing.
Riccardo has not impressed for several years, Bottas lacks interest, and Sargent doesn't have it. I would replace all three w/ Lawson, Porchaire, and Drugovich.
One should remember that he's only a few races in. Don't immediately jump on the bandwagon just because he's had a few good races(Remember De Vries). That said, RB themselves will have the proper data of his performance to compare with the other drivers. And they will need drivers that they have lots of data on to really test if the 2024 AT car is good. A new driver isn't that much of a help in that regard. Give him a year to cook further while RB/AT sorts out their car(and driver) situation. Perhaps the FIA should consider 3 car teams.
At the end of this year Checo should retire, and Liam be given the 2nd Red Bull seat. (I think the only person who would not be happy about this, is Danny Ric!)
Lawson is lucky Yuki didn’t get to start monza and got crashed out by perez on lap 1 in marina bay. I guarantee yuki wouldve been in points scoring positions and ahead of lawson if he got to complete the races. This stinks of de vries part 2
Liam has proved that F2 drivers are more than capable of performing well in F1. Liam was never as good as Pourchaire, Bearman, Martins, Doohan or Shwartzman. He was similar to what Iwasa is now and Liam has done a great job in F1.

To get into F1 a driver not only has to be very good but they have to bring money in the form of cash or sponsors, its been like that for 60 years😊
I fully agree with you about Tsunoda, Sargeant and Lawson. I would pair Ricciardo with Lawson so that you have a real benchmark for Lawson to improve next to. And Sargeant is not worthy of F1 and i don´t see him becoming a superstar if given more time.
Lawson to williams sounds right
Lawson and Yuki should be the drivers. Goodbye Daniel.
the right although unpopular decision is to drop Riccardo
Yuki will likely move on to AT, Riccardo to RB.
Flying Kiwi
If you dont want to compete stay with the old drivers who haven't competed. Why take a punt that could add excitement to your team, doesn't make sense I guess
*Liam Lawson for sure to RB only Carlos Sainz can trump him ATM for 2025*
Let Ricciardo go. Problem solved.
Red Bull could eat Checo's money, promote Daniel to the main team and sign Lawson for a 1 year trial.
Checo is not going anywhere, ford want him there, he is already making a bunch of commercials for them. Ford have too many plans with perez.
Rrb-max/nor
AT- Law and someone new
Checo can go to McLaren
If he said that that is an absurd statement. He's not really in position to demand anything.
@@mikespearwood3914 Oh, he did say it... in a one of his post race interviews. His exact words were, "I don't think I can settle for anything less now." It wasn't the one on Sky F1, I've seen it later on Channel 4 I believe and thought to myself, "Wow, that's a pretty bold statement, young man." ;)
Whatever his contractual obligations to Red Bull may be, if they won't give him a clear perspective pronto he has every right to look elsewhere, Red Bull isn't the only show in town and real top talent is always in high demand...
@@twinkharrylwt226 I said Tsunoda should get the RBR second seat, learn to read
@@teenybopper777yeah and you said when he fails maybe get lawson in it, so i replied to that..
Tsunoda has never beaten a single team mate over the course of a season (and Lawson might still beat him this season lol) why would he ever deserve a RB seat, wtf. Max would destroy his career in the first 4 races.
He hasn't really, They're going Riccardo and Tsunoda. No debate. He won't get a seat next year.
Why does Magnussen still have a drive? Haas does employ crap drivers
I'd say it's time for perez to move on. Bring ricc back to red bull for a couple of years and put lawson in the AT next to tsunoda. In a couple of years 1 of the 2 maybe ready for RB. And Danny ricc has time to find another seat
Losing Liam is a mistake for RB
AT has a different set up from Redbull,
AT the moment is about their new sponsors
What n who the sponsors want
It has gone far from the very reason they exist..
He deserved being on the grid ever since he got robbed of a championship in the season finale by a dirty move.
Tsunoda/Lawson is the best choice for Alpha Tauri.
A not-so-wild guess. Perez will get sacked. Daniel will partner Max and they keep Liam with Yuki.
Perez is being so underrated. Yuki and Daniel sooo overrated. Daniel hasnt done anything in 3 years. Yuki never did anything.
No real Problem, just drop Riccardo.
Riccardo has not impressed for several years, Bottas lacks interest, and Sargent doesn't have it. I would replace all three w/ Lawson, Porchaire, and Drugovich.
He should take Danny's slot
He has been average. Not the next verstappen that’s for sure
Lawson is lucky Yuki didn’t get to start monza and got crashed out by perez on lap 1 in marina bay. I guarantee yuki wouldve been in points scoring positions and ahead of lawson if he got to complete the races. This stinks of de vries part 2
I guess they went to the mistake again lol
Funny how this is irrelevant like less then a day later
This Nick “Debris” rerun is a yawn.
I hope Red Bull take in Logan Seargant so he can crash cars and other teams can win.
Aaldert
is a joke Law doesnt get a seat
lol
Remove subpar Perez.
Liam has proved that F2 drivers are more than capable of performing well in F1. Liam was never as good as Pourchaire, Bearman, Martins, Doohan or Shwartzman. He was similar to what Iwasa is now and Liam has done a great job in F1.
^ This is point on. Liam has been doing the hard yards and always shown raw pace quickly@d-marie Liam has also beaten Yuki and Alex Albon is other formulas.
@d-marie I agree alway looking to improve and resilient. Piastri has that also.
@d-marie Dream Team and McLaren like stealing talent when others make a mistake
