Great discussion and a lot of good points. I do agree that grit and determination is a huge component of a good martial artists. The one thing I would add is that if you have two people that never quit and both super determined then what distinguishes one above the other. Long term I would also add the ability to continue to challenge oneself and really be able to pick up those small things that are being taught (or shown). The best students really have that ability. We talked about that what makes a good (uchi) deshi as well and that ability to be one step in front of the sensei and know they need etc. That is picked up by always watching and paying attention (and of course never quitting).

David Ito Sensei seems determined to get the word "determined” out to us.
“He would need to break it down” into several things to teach it to someone. What are those things?
If we are determined we can achieve Dan grade in 8 years, knowing the situation and preparing for it, we achieve Dan grade in a much shorter time - Aikido protocol determines the time, just saying.
You don’t need to be determined, just, research, repetition, focus, perception, then into the 7 principles. Determination doesn’t exist when we are on the journey/going through the process.
Two Aikido student start out at the same time to achieve Shodan.
One of them goes everyday and practices, in a linear fashion up the grading ladder and gets Shodan, as a shoulder wrestling technique because of determination. He then spends the next ten years softening it up and getting into it in depth.
The other student goes very often, as possible and focuses on accumulating the Aikido principles, layering them and incorporating them into his technique taking the experiences away with him. He achieves his Shodan by going sideways in a non-linear direction which is possibly equivalent to Sandan on his arrival. In the long run he gets there faster with a greater understanding. IHis style is powerful, soft and fluid and works from the centre. This is not because of determination.
Student can’t get something because you tell them to be determined.
These days - You can be determined not to catch this virus, do all that the government tell us to do, then get the virus because the pcr test is fixed! then after two years find out that there is no such thing as a virus, just the body detoxing.
Determination can be is a dangerous delusion

41:48 - Not sure what you mean when you say "fake", sensei. Competing in judo, against other trained judoka is a very challenging task, and it teaches you the very thing you are talking about in this video - determination. Because if you haven't trained hard, and you're not focused and determined, and you enter a judo tournament, you're gonna get thrown on your back, or maybe on your head, in one second. Or you're gonna get taken down and choked or arm-barred until you tap. EVEN if you have trained hard and you are determined you still may get dumped on your head for the simple reason that the other judoka is just flat out better than you are. Whatever the case, judo is a rough, high-impact sport that teaches you a lot about yourself and it tests your ability to persevere even when you're getting rag dolled day in and day out.

28:27 - I'm actually kind of surprised that Furuya sensei behaved in this manner. Eating snow cones when others are still working. However, in order not to avoid making assumptions, is it possible that, perhaps, someone bought the snow cones for them and handed it to them? And so to be polite, they accepted them and had to eat them? A snow cone isn't like a burger where you can just put it on the side and save it for later. But if they ACTUALLY purchased the snow cones themselves, before the work was done, then, yes, I'd say that's rather rude of them, and I'd be upset as well.

In my thought I believe the point was as a martial artist it would be rude to be eating the food/cone, etc when you fellow students are putting away the dojo/mats. I am not sure I heard in the story, but it also sounded like they were also giving orders / direction to those students while eating. It is kind of like at the end of class and everyone is cleaning there are always a few slackers that go slow and don't contribute. Just a thought

your podcast is great but you need a new co host he's just to passive or as Furuya Sensei once said he needs to develop a mean streak.
