  • In this video you can hear my rendition of Johann Sebastian Bach's “Toccata and Fugue in D Minor” (BWV 565) played on my Hauptwerk organ. I have chosen to use the sample set of Rotterdam, created by Sonus Paradisi to get that grand sound this piece demands.
    The most famous organ work ever written - simple as that! For many people the Toccata and Fugue in D minor stands out as the epitome of what organ music sounds like. Some organ scholars such as Peter Williams and Rolf-Dietrich Claus have made publications where they argue against the notion of it being a work by J.S.Bach. In 1961, Antony Davies remarked that the Toccata was void of counterpoint but other Bach scholars like Christoph Wolff however has defended the attribution to Bach and pointed out that it is a youth work.
    There is no copy of BWV 565 by Bach himself. The only near-contemporary source for BWV 565 is an undated copy by Johannes Ringk which clearly states that it is written by J.S.Bach.
    So I'll go with that ;-)

      To me sounds a little too muffled, the high's are not distinct enough.

    I did not listen to this video before as I have heard so many versions of it and have a favourite recording, But to my surprise, I really enjoyed it. I like the relaxed style , the freshness and richness of the sound which is fantastic from your instrument. The fugue is a very fine innovative composition and I think one of the best that Bach wrote. You do it great justice.
    One day I hope you will play the other Toccata and Fugue in D minor (Dorian) by Bach . While I love this Dorian Toccata, I have never been able to appreciate this Fugue. I would be interested to hear how you interpret and play the fugue which may enlighten my perception of it.

    • @philipaggesen
      @philipaggesen  ปีที่แล้ว

      THANKS Stuart. I haven't played the Dorian one and I feel the same as you. The toccata is brilliant but the fugue not that much. I will try and find the score and perhaps make a rendition of it.

    • @stuartmclaren2402
      @stuartmclaren2402 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@philipaggesen Yes I feel the fugue doesn’t seem to go anywhere and drags on to the finish. Perhaps a good reason not to learn it. Talking about the Fugue in G major BWV 541 I feel it is also not Bach’s best but in saying that some listeners have stated they do enjoy both. In learning it I am trying to decorate some of the monotonous repeated notes with ornaments (turns, mordants, trills etc) to try and make more interesting. If I have a PDF copy of the Dorian Toccata I will email it to you

    Well played! I love this piece dearly, so allow my some questions and remarks...
    I wish you would have chosen the Noordbroek set: the Rotterdam is swamped in reverb taking away any possible definition on the voices in the fugue. I would chose 'dramatic' instead of 'grandiose' anytime for this piece, as definition is as important as vehemence I think.
    Also, have you tried to play the last Recitativo and Presto with staccato phrasing? (Having two registers in these Recitative and Presto for right and left hand can add so much to the melody...) The final cadence (7 bars) I would play much slower (it is Adagio and Molto Adagio anyway) and non-legato on the main chords to let it breath and crown the piece with this magnificent progression, with the final three chords with a persistent upper D but otherwise non-legato.

    Hej Philip,
    undskyld mit dårlige dansk, jeg bruger google oversætter. Jeg faldt over din kanal, mens jeg surfede på nettet. Jeg blev straks begejstret for dine numre, jeg lyttede meget til. Alle dem jeg har hørt har været i top.
    Jeg kunne ikke sige, at noget stikker ud, da alt er fantastisk
    afspilles. Men Hauptwerk er også fantastisk software, det lyder godt
    som en original.
    Jeg kan ikke følge med dine "færdigheder", men det, jeg måske kan tilbyde dig, er min version af Gigue BWV 577.
    Hvis du har tid og lyst, kan du lytte til dem.
    (Det er dog anderledes, end du måske forventer😉)
    Mange varme og frem for alt musikalske hilsner fra Tyskland ønsker dig...

      godmorgen Philip,
      Først og fremmest mange tak for den fine kommentar.
      Men jeg kan bestemt returnere komplimenten med den "gode musiker". Jeg havde nogle orgeltimer i kirken som barn, men det var længe, længe siden (ca. 40 år).
      Men der vil også være den ene eller den anden titel på et to-manuelt orgel med fuld pedal.
      Mange hilsner
      Martin
