You can whistle a bonded horse and it will buck off a would-be horse thief. This is honestly one of my fave 'wild' encounters that happens from time to time in single player.
Oh really, I need to remember this the next time I encounter a possible horse thief…I usually just lasso the rider and commit “totally family friendly content” against them or shoot them outright lol

True that! I usually don’t go over a trot on pavement, just because my horse just doesn’t seem to appreciate it. Also, it looks like she doesn’t have horse shoes, so it’s def hard on her feet.

Someone's probably brought this up but I expected the fact that horses actually have realistic body language to be mentioned because its super cool and is an actual useful and practical mechanic. If you want to loot a stranger's horse, especially bounty hunter horses, you can watch their ears and head and they'll actually start tossing their heads and moving their ears back as they get more and more agitated. They'll also do those little agitated steps like they're trying to move away.
I think the only one that you missed and can even see in the video is a horse sweating. When you gallop and ride your horse a lot in RDR2 you can see white sweat at the end of your saddle.
When you do this bareback the sweat will form all across the horses back too. If I remember correctly, the area a saddle coveres won't have sweat even if you take the saddle off. Downright insane the amount of detail they have added for the horses alone.
If you gallop a horse consonantly (say Rhodes to Valentine, I think was when I figured this out) they will lather and sweat, this can be seen barely under the saddle, without a saddle, or even in their stalls at the stable, I think it’s a cool little detail :)
Another detail about the personalities me and my friends noticed with our horses is that when stationary some are more fidgety than others and the way they fidget can vary! Some will kick the ground or shake their head more etc. Also the mechanic for walking backwards is the same to riding backwards on a real horse, pulling on the reins and kicking, another amazing attention to detail!
The only one I didn’t know was that you could free wagon horses, this is some nice information tho to know more about horses on red dead even if it’s a mare or a stallion they’re still different from what personalities they have or breed they are. Really enjoyed this ❤️ c:

Additional small fun fact about player owned horses for both Singleplayer and Multiplayer: there's chance for players horse to lay down on it's own while being idle, for example when player is using or relaxing at wilderness camp or even simply being idle while off the horse Sadly as far as I know there's no way to trigger this faster, you'll have to wait for this one btw very nice video showing the details, keep up the good work and as somewhat veteran player (just only about 1k hours in this game overall... give or take) there was nothing new to learn for me
You mentioned one but there’s more to it! Horses poop yes, but their poop also changes depending on their health and condition, a skinny or sick (maybe obese too but not sure) horse will have runny poop whereas a healthy horse will have healthy looking poop, I absolutely LOVE this detail honestly just because how in depth it is and all
I was never fully sure about the horse personalities but that's neat! I had a shire as my first horse for RDO and he was a champ. I got rid of him after my second horse (Thoroughbred, I think) who spooked easily with gunfire so I decided to go back to a shire but the horse was maybe just as cowardly.🤣
Bro, the shire Hosea gives you is horrible! I love him (I named him Raven) But he is so skittish and I can barely control him when he gets agitated LOL
@@firefly_the_rescue9308 I believe his personality is autogenerated each play through as i have used him several times and he has been different on each.
I think I knew all of these but one. I was kind of suspicious about the personalities because all of my horses act differently. My favorite is an Andalusian who's an absolute champ when hunting. A cougar caught me off guard---ran right on top of us---but he did not spook and run. Wish I could find this personality more often.
Wagon horses also have a different walk, they walk just like one would if it was pulling something, so they take smaller steps to attack the ground strongly and get grip.
I knew all of them, as I love red dead and I love horses even more- one of my favorite things is Arthur’s ability to do a flying lead change x’D he’s incredible at it! Also, as you bond with your horse, you can do little trick gates. My favorite one is “horse drifting “, which is just essentially having the horse walk sideways like the walking horses do In shows. Pretty cool! Also! I had a suspicion about the horses and their personality’s but I had no idea it was true! My thoroughbred Calypso is very antsy, and refuses jumps pretty often (although I’ve been practicing with her and surprisingly she’s getting better). Very scared of predators and gunfire. My American standardbred is a lot more brave and level headed, and she’s a natural at jumping. Super cool.
Your horse will pick herbs with its mouth too, instead of you having to get off and pick them by hand. Just stand over them and it should work, super cute.
I got RDR2 relatively late on a sale about a month ago and now I can't stop playing the game. It's just so beautiful and serene and then there's the horse system. They are so gorgeous looking and actually made me interested in learning more about real horses. An absolutely masterwork of a game this is. This vid right here makes me appreciate and praise the game and its realistic horse system even more.
The only one I didn't know was about the testies getting smaller. I also like that the hooves make different sounds on different things, i personally LOVE the sound of horse hooves so this is awesome to me. lol
Another cool detail that's not only for horses but still a cool one is that if you're walking on rocky slopes, certain rocks will slide down the slopes as if they were kicked out of the way. It's very noticeable on horses so I figured it'd fit c:
RDR2 is my favourite game out of all the games I have played in my life. The attention to detail (not only to horses) is just breathtaking. One thing I didn't see in this video is the fact that you can see the horses' muscles working. Especially on the hind legs (I htink there is a shot in your vid where it's visible). And it gets more pronounced when the horse is malnourished. Also, you can see the spine and ribcage more clearly when you don't feed it regularly and the hindlegs/hips look less round (looking from behind). Horses also get nervous when the game weather turns stormy with thunder and lightning. And leaving your horse dirty for a long time will negatively affect the health bar. This game is just fascinating
You forgot that there is another way to tame a horse. Actually, aproaching them in a different way. You can walking slowly towards and try to calm them. When you are closer, you can mount on them and start taming. But i don't know if we can get closer enough to pet them, give food and gain their trust without mount it.
The jump-to-horse feature in this game is also in the first game! You can fall from a height and land right on the saddle. First game doesn’t get enough credit for some of its features it had for 2010!
@@xxyouramy I believe you have to go onto online options, then select horses, can't remember exactly but there's privacy options so other players can't get onto your horse if you choose to set it that way, or you can do it so only posse members can access your horse. You probably have it set to no access to any other players 😊
All my life I've grown up around horses, I've been rolled on, stomped on, bit, kicked, had a horse deliberately stand on my foot refusing to move, crushed between a stall and a horse, with intent from the horse 😂 and finally yes I've stepped in it 😂‼️ when I see this in Rd2 and NPCS being dumb around horses I find it hilarious, thank you for another wonderful gift, Semper Fidelis, Oorah Carry On and Beyond ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😂😀💥💥💥💯💯💯‼️‼️‼️
Sadly you can’t have two horses out on online rdr2 expect for tamed ones, stolen npc horses, or a friends horse to annoy them if in a possy of course. If there’s a way to have two horses out on online mode, please tell me! Because I want to so badly.
With your “personality” one, I’ve noticed one trait that drove me a bit mad in the game. The man who races you on his horse (was it a nokota?) to various spots on the map, I remember that he shoots his horse for losing but, if you shoot him before he gets the chance and you take the horse, the horse is forever “skittish” and will constantly whinny and kick up like it’s scared no matter what. I was trying to hunt bears and took his horse from him as my temporary horse to hold more pelts and it was non-stop reacting to nothing, making me even more nervous that a bear or cougar was close by when it just wasn’t. 🤦♀️
@@lucasmartinez5703 I can’t even tell you how many times I aimed at it (even though I know I couldn’t kill it) and punched it in the arse for annoying me. I think I eventually just set it on fire or something, ‘cos it was driving me too insane. Edit: I’m not known to get mad and rage in games but this one horse was really trying me.
one thing i have so far found to be true for all horses in the game is that they hate uncontrolled fires. shoot out a lantern and the structure it was on catching fire will lead to a panicked flight reaction (unless you're riding it, then it will just show its discomfort). same goes for burning bodies and pretty much any fire that isn'ta camp fire or lamp. also, you don't need to lasso a temporary horse to lead it. simply whistle for it and it will stay on your heels. it's a great help to make hunting trips more lucrative, as you can now carry two big game pelts. it usually makes more sense to ride the temporary horse and have your main horse follow though, as your main horse is usually faster and like that you don't risk accidentally taking off and leaving the other horse behind. also, every step riding a horse helps bonding with it.
I really wonder how many floats the developers put into these horses. As in how many values go up with specific interactions. I know bonding plays a big role even in how close your horse approaches you when you whistle. Level 1 horses tend to just stand put a little further away while Level 4 horses come a lot closer. One of my horses in online was super skittish around bears and wolves, bucking me off pretty fast if I didn‘t spam pat it and move away. Today it really doesn‘t care anymore, I can get in really close without much of a problem. The thing is this had nothing to do with the Level of bonding, because it was still the same at Level 4. I really wonder if there are some kind of hidden mechanics happening with just positive reenforcement or if I‘m imagining things.
Have you jumped on the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign? Its a shame Rockstar is abandoning this masterpiece to focus on GTA, a celebration of the worst elements of society.
The kick animation is also in the first game! Though nothing else is haha I love the spooking stuff because I didnt even realise it was a thing until the epilogue of the game. I had a they grey hungarian halfbred horse the whole story and she never spooked or threw me off once, super reliable. I also love how their ears swivel towards sounds that are made around them, if its loud and close they will also look in that direction and watch whatevers going on. When camps are attack in online if you dont engage from a safe distance you can see your horse watching the drama.
Another thing I noticed is that if you gallop for an extended period of time while covering long distances on the map, your horse will actually produce lather. This is especially visible in darker horses and will disappear as they dry off or if you brush them 😁 I love this game so much!
i absolutely love that horses have personalities. racehorses are usually more skittish but my beloved blood bay thoroughbred Blaze once brushed flanks with a grizzly and didn't toss me.
Speaking on the behaviors, 3 of my stables horses all buck me off when they see wolves, and they were all stolen, however my wild buckskin I tamed does not even spook at the wolves, it’s a awesome detail
6:22 when I figured this out I found out it’s a decent method for stabling 2 horses at once it can get a little frustrating at times since the temporary horse feature gets in the way a little but it still has helped me get a few of my horses
I can confirm that the horses have personalities! I got a turkoman and i got it to level 4 bonding but it was a very skittish horse especially near gunshots and wildlife! With the smallest threat it was throwing me to the ground! So i decided to get another one just to try! I bought the same horse, same coat and both are females! The 2nd horse now at lv 3 bonding is fearless compared to the first! I was standing next to a bear and it didn't throw me down! Same with the wolves! :) i really find this fascinating
Проработка всех деталий в этой игре зашкаливает и проработка лошади мне очень нравится так как сама ездию верхом. Много узнала парод лошадей которых у нас нет.
IK I WASNT THE ONLY ONE WHO NOTICED THE PERSONALITY!!!!! Even if its with the same breed same gender and same color they all have there own little personality.
One very interesting detail is that when riding at full speed for a long time, there will be salt build up around the saddle from all the sweat that was under the saddle.
Horses drink too! Its not easy to see it but sometimes if you stop near water theyll go and drink. I saw horses in Valentine in the paddocks drink and mine too when i was hunting near a river
I remember once I had just tamed a wild Mustang and a pack of wolves attacked us, the Mustang bucked me off but my dear and loyal Paula did not flinch and I could mount and scape while shooting them off. Had she been more flinchy I would have been killed for sure.
I knew all of then besides the stallion's bits shrinking in the cold! I don't usually pay attention to the genders of the horses I get since I usually just get them because they are pretty and I want a nice horse (and usually end up sticking with that horse for months at a time), so I've never noticed it!
Nice video. I have one more. When you are on standing horse for very long time (day), it have little energy, get head down and shaking legs. I found it when i was mounted up, dont stop game and go akf xD
Wagon horses or horses bought from the stables usually have horse shoes! Over time they will fall off one by one creating the horse to become bare-footed!
and the different types of horses r good for different things - like the arabian is good for racing, war horse is good for carrying heavy pelts or animal carcasses, etc etc
I noticed the wagons horses have horseshoes but when freeing them and taking them to the stables their shoes disappear since they won’t be pulling a stagecoach/wagon anymore!
"Unhitching" horses from wagons is only in single player game. Unfortunately not online. (At least it's not a selectable option) HOWEVER, online it is possible to free horse from wagons by having an accident/crash (unlevel ground/rocks, or dynamite in the right place... risking killing the horse, but I've freed several horses. Great way to check out a draft horse test ride before buying one)
I have something funny atm in my second playthrough of the story. I'm in chapter 2 atm and since I'm avoiding a certain Strauss mission ( people who played the whole story know what i'm talking about :D ) AND because I'm petty and therefor keeping Micah in jail for the moment, I'm pretty high in honor. So mayby it's because I'm high in honor so early in the game. Anyway; to keep a certain fate on the backburner for now, I'm doing some challenges and was working on the gambling challenges. Since playing a few hours poker emaciated my horse who was outside the saloon I brought him to the stable, so he would get his feed. PLayed poker for a few hours and went on to the next challenge. So I go outside the saloon and whistle my horse; completely forgetting I stabled him and so ofcourse he wasn't coming. But I didn't realise right away so I whistled a few times.....and what do you know; a chestnut horse that I didn't know came to me; no saddle or bridle, but that doesn't matter in the game anyway. So I hopped on and rode to the stable, sold the chestnut and got my own horse. But thats not even all; now every time Arthur spends some time in the saloon gambling that same chestnut is waiting for me outside the saloon. I think I sold him 4 times already. I don't know if it's my high honor that gave me somehow a strange horse to hop on without getting negative honor or being accused of stealing or it's some glitch that never happened my first playthrough, because during the first playthrough I always had my own horse waiting outside. But I'm not complaining; saves me alot of running to the stable to get my horse back; I now can simply ride on some friendly chestnut that seems to have a liking for Arthur. If it happens again I will keep him/her, because now I'm writing this I realise how faithfull that little chestnut is so now I feel a little guilty having him sold several times now :D
While it could be a glitch I'm pretty sure that's actually "Scraggy Nag", who is the game's backup horse should yours be unavailable (usually because it's been killed).
I've noticed a lot of realism similar to rdr2 in botw horses. Of course the similarities aren't as realistic as rdr2, some of the things kind of surprised me. When in colder areas, you can see ur horses breath, they shake when it stops raining or if you bring them into the water and links outside and inside legs move correctly when you turn the horse. There are some mistakes thought, like when you first tame a horse they keep their nose down in "protest" when it's actually the opposite irl. Also when backing up, they shove their heads upwards. Sorry this is really long and I'm kind of ranting, but I've been wanting to point these things out for a long time.
I remember a playing with a friend of mine and he walked up on his horse. He didn't realize he needed to actually keep up his horse so I did it for him. Poor things head was basically dragging on the ground 😭
There’s one you missed horses will protect the rider if there is a snake or a. Cougar I am not lying it happened to me my horse booked it wen it got to close and then gallup and and chased it away
I know how to train my horses to go into the water when I whistle for them. I tryed my own technique one time and it worked. When I swam to a deep part of some water and whistled for my horse he came with out even hesitating he just jumped right in I’m really happy with our progress👍😁😁😀😄❤️💕

Additional small fun fact about player owned horses for both Singleplayer and Multiplayer:
there's chance for players horse to lay down on it's own while being idle, for example when player is using or relaxing at wilderness camp or even simply being idle while off the horse
Sadly as far as I know there's no way to trigger this faster, you'll have to wait for this one
btw very nice video showing the details, keep up the good work
and as somewhat veteran player (just only about 1k hours in this game overall... give or take) there was nothing new to learn for me
You mentioned one but there’s more to it! Horses poop yes, but their poop also changes depending on their health and condition, a skinny or sick (maybe obese too but not sure) horse will have runny poop whereas a healthy horse will have healthy looking poop, I absolutely LOVE this detail honestly just because how in depth it is and all
Also I knew twenty three of them! :)
An other detail I love is how the sound of hoofsteps change depending on the ground you’re walking on.
I think I knew all of these but one. I was kind of suspicious about the personalities because all of my horses act differently. My favorite is an Andalusian who's an absolute champ when hunting. A cougar caught me off guard---ran right on top of us---but he did not spook and run. Wish I could find this personality more often.
I love when game developers take the time to make horses realistic! This is one of the things I love about this game.
they also salivate/drool when they are running and getting tired it's easier to see it if you have a collector lantern on ur saddle
Tamed horses in the City are wearing horseshoes, the wild ones of course not :)
That is a great feature, and it's quicker than my character picking herbs. To get it you need to level up one of the roles, I think naturalist.
@@lonestarbuckeye6889 It’s the collectors role!
I always free wagon horses after I’ve robbed and killed the driver, I may kill and rob people, but I have enough good manners to free the horses.
Amazing video! I actually didin't know all of them which is pretty cool! I especially like the personality one ^^
small detail but,
the players actually lean back and forth when going up and down hills
The only one I didn't know was about the testies getting smaller. I also like that the hooves make different sounds on different things, i personally LOVE the sound of horse hooves so this is awesome to me. lol
Another cool detail that's not only for horses but still a cool one is that if you're walking on rocky slopes, certain rocks will slide down the slopes as if they were kicked out of the way. It's very noticeable on horses so I figured it'd fit c:
i almost peed my self watching this is swear 🤣 first the shrinking balls then you "dispatching" that one dude like i cant 🤣🤣🤣🤣
You also missed the feature that if you try and run your horse into a rock, it will avoid it
My fun fact is that the best mount in RDR1 Online is the Zonkey, a donkey painted like a zebra!
I knew them all. I’m a die hard red dead fan ❤️
We're two! I also pointed out a horse detail she missed! A pretty cool one. ~
how do another player go on my hourse it dont work
Same here! Apart from the testicle thing... Lol
@@xxyouramy I believe you have to go onto online options, then select horses, can't remember exactly but there's privacy options so other players can't get onto your horse if you choose to set it that way, or you can do it so only posse members can access your horse. You probably have it set to no access to any other players 😊
@@michaiahvanmuysen2354 I don’t know why I checked but I knew it
All my life I've grown up around horses, I've been rolled on, stomped on, bit, kicked, had a horse deliberately stand on my foot refusing to move, crushed between a stall and a horse, with intent from the horse 😂 and finally yes I've stepped in it 😂‼️ when I see this in Rd2 and NPCS being dumb around horses I find it hilarious, thank you for another wonderful gift, Semper Fidelis, Oorah Carry On and Beyond ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️😘😂😀💥💥💥💯💯💯‼️‼️‼️
You forgot when you run and jump on the frozen lakes up in the mountains you can hear the ice cracking and moving. It’s pretty cool.
Sadly you can’t have two horses out on online rdr2 expect for tamed ones, stolen npc horses, or a friends horse to annoy them if in a possy of course. If there’s a way to have two horses out on online mode, please tell me! Because I want to so badly.
2:34 oh the physics are oh so realistic
So horses can get traumatized in this game too? Wow.
Jesus Christ you could have just told it to flee or something lol.
@@lucasmartinez5703 But then it comes back when I whistle for my regular horse! What’s a girl to do? 🤷♀️
workers for RDR2: ''how realistic you want this to be, manager?''
Manager: ''yes.''
one thing i have so far found to be true for all horses in the game is that they hate uncontrolled fires. shoot out a lantern and the structure it was on catching fire will lead to a panicked flight reaction (unless you're riding it, then it will just show its discomfort). same goes for burning bodies and pretty much any fire that isn'ta camp fire or lamp.
also, you don't need to lasso a temporary horse to lead it. simply whistle for it and it will stay on your heels. it's a great help to make hunting trips more lucrative, as you can now carry two big game pelts. it usually makes more sense to ride the temporary horse and have your main horse follow though, as your main horse is usually faster and like that you don't risk accidentally taking off and leaving the other horse behind. also, every step riding a horse helps bonding with it.
I always try to get dishonorable in RDO but always gets honorable maxed out back when I am taking care of the horses.
Have you jumped on the #SaveRedDeadOnline campaign? Its a shame Rockstar is abandoning this masterpiece to focus on GTA, a celebration of the worst elements of society.
I LOVE THE RED DEAD VIDS ❤️ keep ‘em coming Abi! Literally you are the best gaming TH-camr
The kick animation is also in the first game! Though nothing else is haha
I love the spooking stuff because I didnt even realise it was a thing until the epilogue of the game.
21/25, and ive only had the game a week! Im enjoying hunting and riding, and occasionally taking on quests
7:39 Not only that but at times they will tilt their heads towards you while brushing, patting, etc. :)
RDO horses = chef kiss honestly o-o
This!!! ♥
The dark bay turkoman has to be my favorite horse in this game.
Love it when your kust standing next to your horse taking I the view then you hear "pfffrrrrrrrrt"
One very interesting detail is that when riding at full speed for a long time, there will be salt build up around the saddle from all the sweat that was under the saddle.
couple years late but one of my favourite details is how the horses get foamy around the saddle after you really push them in a gallop for a while :-)
Horses drink too! Its not easy to see it but sometimes if you stop near water theyll go and drink. I saw horses in Valentine in the paddocks drink and mine too when i was hunting near a river
The blood from deer is showed on the horse! SUPER cool!!!
I love how in some areas in the early mornings, steam will come off the horse’s body’s. I love this game!
It isn't just expensive horses. I got a ton of NPC compliments from a Grullo Dun Mustang found in the heartlands.
Nice video.
I have one more. When you are on standing horse for very long time (day), it have little energy, get head down and shaking legs.
I found it when i was mounted up, dont stop game and go akf xD
I love watching you play rdr2 it makes me so happy!
Wagon horses or horses bought from the stables usually have horse shoes! Over time they will fall off one by one creating the horse to become bare-footed!
Abby I love your videos💖 you have inspired me in so many ways and you are just awesome!!!💖 Stay safe!!
and the different types of horses r good for different things - like the arabian is good for racing, war horse is good for carrying heavy pelts or animal carcasses, etc etc
I noticed the wagons horses have horseshoes but when freeing them and taking them to the stables their shoes disappear since they won’t be pulling a stagecoach/wagon anymore!
Abi you also missed one. When too horses get too close they pin their ears.
"Unhitching" horses from wagons is only in single player game. Unfortunately not online. (At least it's not a selectable option)
HOWEVER, online it is possible to free horse from wagons by having an accident/crash (unlevel ground/rocks, or dynamite in the right place... risking killing the horse, but I've freed several horses. Great way to check out a draft horse test ride before buying one)
It's the small details that make this game incredible
🥰AMAZING! 🥰
🔥I LOVE YOUR VIDEOS! 🔥
Their ears points out if a horse is aggravated or calm
I know how to train my horses to go into the water when I whistle for them. I tryed my own technique one time and it worked. When I swam to a deep part of some water and whistled for my horse he came with out even hesitating he just jumped right in I’m really happy with our progress👍😁😁😀😄❤️💕
The black wild horse was gorgeous

I knew only a few. If there are more, I would love a part two! But in your tribute to Spirit, horses give birth correct?
Nah, sadly that's still not in the game. They did talk about adding wild horses fights, foals, hooves' care and more, but they ended up not doing it since they kept their attention on Player and World's details. Which with I am not dissapointed. ♪
