Barcelona is simply Spain’s best city and Madrid can’t compete with that. Madrid’s only leverage is being the country’s capital in the middle of nowhere. Barcelona has acces to : France, Andorra, Pyrenean mountains, Mediterranean sea, Ibiza, Majorca, Menorca and a lot of destinations in Italy and Morocco through ferries.
