What a treat for the locals folks to be included in the digging, I'd love to do something like that, and imagine myself digging archeology when digging my garden for vegetable planting.
I love Time Team dearly...also the dog in the foreground at 24:24 is adorable and clearly trying to figure out why these holes are being dug in his garden.
How I would have loved to take part of such a dig. In my younger days I got to help with some archeological volunteer work in California but I would have loved to do a Time Team one in the U.K! So much more history!

Not cruel. It is funny tho. I remember my dad doing this back in the 90’s early 00’s. We are from a different time my friend. But I would love to see someone do this today and walk around a neighborhood.
It's really annoying that they retread these old episodes slapping new dates on them intentionally refusing to admit how old they are. Mick Aston died in 2013 (rest his soul). It's not "Archeologists uncover...." It's "At least ten years ago, maybe 20 archeologists uncovered.... and you've probably watched this already, maybe a couple of times. " Archeology is science. Put a date on it.

To pretend that viewership and watch-time isn't a metric the people who run this channel have to abide by is a bit ignorant though. This is one of 5 outlets that has to juggle licenses and legal crap that come from these documentaries being featured on cable television, back when that was the main source to get high-budget docs. This is also a funnel for their History Hit subscription service. A lot of metrics are being considered here. Nobody is going to title their videos "Hey this is a good old interview with Ruth Goodman to watch while you're taking a shit."

A great episode, but it's yet another that is already freely available on Time Team's own TH-cam channel. What is missing? The early episodes that they don't post - the first three or four seasons when everything they found was a 'first' for the team seem to have mostly disappeared.
All of these history outlets seem to work in tandem with each other, and much of what is uploaded to YT are BBC (and others) documentaries that still have licenses from when they were featured on cable television. There is an etiquette to how they're uploaded, and some of it is indeed legal. "Chronicle" and "Timeline" often feature much of the same material, but compiled from different documentaries in a different order. But after a while, you come across videos you've never seen with interviews you definitely have seen, in them.
Watching this, my heart goes out to all those people who lived there, had families and built their lives around their church, and finally passed away; yet, in the chaos of time, they were all forgotten. But God hasn't forgotten any of them, and many of them will be around again for Believers to make their acquaintance into eternity. God is simply amazing.

An overhead observation seems to have been an ideal 1st look, plus a Stewart perspective of the landscape. But hey, I'm a Sociologist/Behavioralist and Historian, not a Geologist or Archaeologist.

Can anyone explain what they mean when they refer to "a ditch." Do they mean a ditch for dumping things?
I think it's like a moat except a moat circled completely around the structure and a ditch would've been more or less a straight line and it didn't necessarily need to have water in it. A river on one side would be a natural boundary and a swamp on the other would be a boundary. The ditch would've been deep and wide enough to create a boundary where there wasn't a natural one. If you were coming towards the building and had to cross the ditch to reach it, it would've been too difficult or inconvenient to ride a horse or climb on foot down one side and up the other because the horse could hurt itself and people on foot would be slowed down. It would force anyone trying to reach the other side to use a bridge. If a large group of people were coming to attack the building they would be forced into the area of the bridge and it would be easier for defensive forces like archers to shoot the invaders while they're crowded together. If they tried to climb through the ditch, they would've been slowed down and archers would have more time to spot them and shoot them.

Mate, I’d love to have a BEER with Phil. It’s funny I always thought I might’ve got a chance haha. Both times Id planned a trip to the UK with my kids, the whole itinerary, meticulous planning, even to visit Wessex Archeology, I thought I’d just rock up, and ask at the front desk if I could see Phil about a pint, (my kids recon that would be ( Dad, That’s Total Embarrassment,) so, if they thought I was another Aussie nutbag, I would probably try loitering around outside and see if I could “Run into Phil” by Accident, and invite him for a pint. Alas, both times I was diagnosed with bloody Cancer before I was meant to go, very frustrating haha, understatement ! So I’ve decided I’m cursed or jinxed or both? So I’ve given up on that dream. Haha. I know there is many of us out there who have dreamed about it? I wonder if he gets Time Team stalkers? I could listen to his stories all day! I also heard he played a mean guitar too? Not sure if it’s true though. I’d also loved to have a jam with him too! Ha. I’ll just stick too watching old time team episodes instead haha. Very fascinating, and I love the involvement of the community, but it's a shame they have to do the frantic 3 day shtick.
That is so an unimportant discussion, that I have stopped looking after 10 minutes. Discussions about who has invented something are always unimportant. Inventions are often done simultaneously or unrelated at different points in time and on different places on earth. Important is to discover the links between diiferent aeria's on earth and if it could have been dispersed in some way by those cultural or economic links. Because mummification is after this in Africa only practiced in Egypt, those people have probably have taken this to Egypt when they went there when the Sahara dried out.

If we have to dig down to discover our past, does that mean the Earth is growing, or does it mean older things sink into the ground?
Soil washes up over areas or is put down to build over while soil erodes in other areas. Also, water is pulled from the ground, so the ground can collapse. That is why they try to go in layers even in areas dug out before or robbed out for stones. ❤

it means erosion is a thing. the surface of the earth is a labyrynth of peaks and valleys, where the peaks are eroding in every rain and windstorm, year on year, never ceasing. This sediment makes its way down the mountains and deposits in the valleys. Our ancestors lived predominantly in two types of places: along rivers and in valleys. Rivers supplied easy transportation, food, and water. While valleys offered security and screening from brigands and invaders. These low lying places are prime locations for soil depositing in flood plain during massive storms.
If it wasn't for plate tectonics and volcanic activity thrusting matter back up, erosion would level and stratify the surface of the earth to a fairly uniform plain.
That's like finding apples in an apple orchard.
