I've heard so many great versions of this, but to me, this is the most beautiful version I have heard. He doesn't break the phrases to breathe in the middle, and I love the way he caresses the word Divin. Most singers take a breath before the word, but he doesn't. And his pianissimi are gorgeous. Simply exquisite.

You are entitled to think what you will of his timbre and interpretation, but his vocal talent is undisputable. I can't for the life of me understand how you can call his singing "harsh" in any way - he has one of the most velvety voices i have heard. His timbre is not dark by any means. In that case, you're confusing darkness with fullness. He sings light lyric reperoire, and btw his vibrato is perfectly fine - a fast, even vibrato is rather a proof of good technique that the opposite.

Very "different" from the majority of other singers if not from everybody else. Who cares, this is tremendously good & vocally thrilling! (yes, the french pronunciation needs improvements but only people who know the correct pronunciation will notice)
For me, Fleta is #1 in this aria. That's why I can't imagine it without a crescendo on a high note. However, this performance is beautiful in its own way and sustained in a purely lyrical manner, without presenting vocal athleticism to the public, which is hardly available.

The only statements true are the ones that are concrete; i.e. the shortage of air at some places. This is definitely due to nerves, not ability. No one would sing that aria, in a competition to boot, without normally being able to sustain the phrases. He looks relatively young and has a lot to prove - He did a great job under such circumstances. Operatics critique about his voice; imo incorrect - the vibrato is perfectly fine. it's a lyric voice singing tenderly and it's def. not too dark.

Fritz Wunderlich hatte, wie die anderen wirklich "grossen" Sänger, einen absolut unverwechselbaren Sound und eine unglaubliche Stimme. Es gibt Aufnahmen von ihm (z.B. der Tamino Arie oder, natürlich völlig anderes Genre, des Schlagers Granada) wo man sich fragt: wie bekommt der Mann das hin? Wo kommen diese Töne her? Wie bei Pavarotti das hohe C in der Rodolfo Arie während des Auftritts in Moskau. Oder ein "Esultate" del Monaco's. Oder das ersterbende Piano am Ende der Aida Arie von Franco Corelli (live gesungen). Die wirklich "Grossen" haben sängerisch Dinge vollbracht, die Profis und Laien gleichermassen erstaunen. I would like to hear Helene Fischer sing this. On her annual Christmas show. There ARE versions in English, if she doesn't fancy the French. I have never heard it in German. However, Ms Fischer is aiming for a shortened lifespan, through her public display of Akrobatik nonsense. Alas, her fans just gawp passively, when they should be protesting. So unfortunately my wish may never be fulfilled. What a waste of a beautiful lady with a beautiful voice. The song is SO sad that I shall think of it when Ms Fischer is no more. Daniel does a very good job with this exquisite aria, by the way.

Kraus version is the best... Because his technique mainteined his voice fresh and healthy for 71 years.... Never lowered down an aria...never sang in falsetto
