I"m a Bengali from Calcutta.I studied in Calcutta University, though I studied Finance and Mathematics,I have deep love for History. Actually in Calcutta University,Sir Jadunath Sarkar was a great and great scholar student and Prof of Calcutta University long time back. A renowned Indian historian and scholar. He was most distinguished historians of medieval India. Sarkar's work on the decline of the Mughal Empire and the rise of Maratha power remains influential in Indian history. The Marathas indeed faced a historic defeat in the Third Battle of Panipat on January 14, 1761, against the Afghan king Ahmad Shah Abdali (Durrani), he got the permission from the Ottomans, very few Historian knew it
. This battle was a turning point in Indian history, weakening the Maratha Empire and setting the stage for British colonial dominance. MARATHAS LOST IN THE ANGLO -MARATHA WAR.
Before the battle, the Marathas sought alliances with various regional powers, including the Jats, Rajputs, and Sikhs, to counter Abdali's forces. However, these groups, wary of Maratha expansion and due to their own regional concerns, refrained from joining the Maratha cause. The lack of support isolated the Marathas, making their defeat in the battle even more decisive.HINDUS WERE DIVIDED AND STILL TODAY THEY ARE DIVIDED.
This intense conflict resulted in tremendous casualties, marking it as one of the largest and bloodiest battles fought in the 18th century. The Marathas' defeat drastically weakened their influence in northern India, enabling British forces to strengthen their hold on the Indian subcontinent.THE MARATHAS ARE THE BRAVEST PEOPLE IN INDIA. Kulkarni Sir,a great knowledgeable person. Thanks Sir.

History writing is a contentious topic and is the reason for much debate and discussion. Over the years a new breed of Historians have begun to challenge the status quo through books that look at periods of our history from an indigenous/non-Colonial/non-Marxist lens. Dr. Uday S Kulkarni is an eminent example - he has written 10 books on Maratha History and has done painstaking research on the period. Although we have hosted him on Bharatvaarta many times, this was our first in person interaction. We discuss many aspects of the fascinating episode of Narayanrao Peshwa's assassination and what followed after in this very engaging conversation. Thank you to my friend, Amit Paranjape, for his support in enabling this interaction and also the production crew for their meticulous effort. Hope you enjoy this podcast, friends! If you do, then please so share it with your friends and family - and please also buy Dr. Kulkarni's books (links in the description). Happy Deepavali in advance! 🙂🙏
PS - In the intro, I have mentioned Naraynrao as son of Madhavrao, while he was the younger brother. Regret the error! 🙏

Some people say that Marathas went to fight Abdali just because Najeeb and Abdali killed Dattaji Shinde (one of sadars of Marathas in North) and not to defend the nation. So, even then I mention about Ahamadia Karar (1752) between Marathas and Mughals in which Mughals declared Marathas as their protector from its adversaries like Afgans, can there be any better counter argument to the point that some say about Marathas and their will to defend the nation, all the people who spread this narrative that Marathas didn't want to defend the nation but take revenge of Dattaji's murder by abdali and najeeb are mostly found to be lefitist its my observation

Narayanrao Peshwa was not Peshwa Madhavrao’s son as mentioned by the host. He was his younger brother. And he was not ‘ very young’; he was 18 years old, married with a son who later became Peshwa himself. These are extremely well known facts. I’m just surprised and a bit disappointed at the level of research that these podcasts do.

Reality is after 1749, means after Chatrapati Shahu Maharaj Thorle(Satara)passsd away,
Maratha Empire got more decentralised, which obviously is helpful for administration purpose.
But it created more independent powers, who wanted to overpower each other, which unfortunately leads to peshwa bajirao 2 signing a stupid treaty with brits in 1802 and empire starts falling down.

Yes what about it? Groups in other religions are identified as per the sects within(catholic, protestant, salafi, wahabi etc..) but Hinduism is deliberately forced to identify by their professions now known as "caste system".. although it is also possible in Hinduism (vaishanav, shaiva shakt, etc.) but western foreigners were afraid of unified martial groups like Hindu-Sikhs..so the game of identity alienation began. And you still fall for it.

Mr. Kurkarni vilified the Mughals of looting the country and filled their coffers. The Marathas also "looted" from Bengal several times irrespective of religion and the term " BORGI" were labelled against them meaning plunderers. The Marathas like the Mughals and the other invaders were only interested in expanding their empire by looting. A cannal was dug in and around the city of Calcutta to ward off the Maratha " looters".

Of course the Marathas looted. It is an inevitable part of warfare.
What happened after the conquest is what defines the historical perspective of the conquered.
None of the people in Gwalior, Jhansi, Vadodara, present day Maharashtra, Karnataka, Tanjore remember Marathas as oppressors. They are remembered as patrons of civilizational values like protectors, patrons and builders of public structures like temples, ghats, libraries etc
Who knows how people of Bengal and Orissa would have remembered Marathas if their raids had succeeded in establishing Maratha hegemony.
Mughals and their Islamic predecessors are not reviled in present day history because they conquered, many invaders from the same geography have already invaded and conquered parts of India - hunas, sakas and created empires with Kings like Kanishka.
The reason Mughals and their ilk are historically resented is it was the first conquest where the conquerers were so contemptuous of the conquered that they denied any space for their civilization to exist in dignity.
Even the Mongol invasions of Asia and Europe were brutal, but Chengis Khan never had the same level of contempt about the religious and intellectual values of the conquered.

@@maheshpurandare8980I am an Indian Christian. You write mughals and their ilk are historically resented........
I think, you should write mughals and christians.
Kindly Google Papal bull 1452,1453, 1492,1493. The church authorized the colonial powers to CONQUER, CONVERT and ENSLAVE the world.
Unlike SANATAN DHARMA which is based on EXPERIENCE, SELF-REALISATION and leads to WISDOM, KNOWLEDGE and ENLIGHTENMENT, abrahamic religions are based on belief. Belief means to accept without proof. They are usually enforced. They lead to ignorance and enslavement.
In the name of SALVATION they lead to world domination.
We, as sanatanis should NEVER forget this distinction.

The reason why Marathas did that was because Bengal was a European colony by that time. And they wanted to oust Europeans.
In Kanpur and Jhansi the same Maratha leaders were crowned as Peshwa and as Rani.

This is why Hindus lose, despite being extremely blessed. They do not follow the path taught to them by Narayana Paramathman, via Rama & Krishna avatar, to uphold what is right. Greed has its place, but in excess, there is karma.
