So it looks like I need to address a few things. First of all I did not “forget” that Stan Lee and Marvel were involved in Sentai at one point and that he tried to adapt Sun Vulcan. I just didn’t wanna go into too much detail about the pre power Rangers stuff. I had said “particularly by one man” meaning a lot of the attempts were by Haim but NOT just him. It’d get very disengaging to not be directly talking about Power Rangers for so long especially considering this video is long as is and seems to have more non fans as part of the audience than usual. If you want elaboration on the pre history, watch this, I highly recommend it th-cam.com/play/PLE6OVIVzh5D8-CWaqQrSyV-WAe449E4oM.html
Second of all, I did kinda fuck up by not making mention of the Boom Comics or Lightning Collection. They aren’t as much of centerpieces to the brand as the shows and movies and main toy lines but it was still worth mentioning, for that, I apologize.
Lastly, big shoutout thefestevil for the extended Dino charge music for the neo saban section, check out the vid, it sounds sick 🤯 th-cam.com/video/hOfxroGALuc/w-d-xo.html

I grew up with Samurai, remember bits and pieces from Jungle Fury, mostly the theme, and honestly kinda liked Megaforce, since at the beginning it called back my favorite show, obviously being Samurai. I also loved the anniversary special where we saw the return of several rangers, especially OG Green, but I can see the flaws, especially since I’m older now and not completely clouded by my love of superpowers, transformations and swords.

    • @pockylovingranger
      @pockylovingranger ปีที่แล้ว +7

For me, Samurai started off decently enough even with the minor nitpicks I had, but that was mostly due to changes from Shinkenger. The moment Antonio showed up, it all went down hill for me cause they totally BOTCHED his character next to Genta, his Sentai counterpart. I HIGHLY recommend checking Shinkenger out if you haven’t cause it’s a THOUSAND times better than Samurai, and the team up with Go-Onger is LIGHTYEARS ahead of the shitfest that is Clash of the Red Rangers. That had continuity errors galore, unresolved plot threads, and they randomly threw in plot bits from the Shinkenger movie for some stupid reason.

The idea for the Power Rangers didn't originate from Haim Saban, it existed earlier than that. Stan Lee from Marvel almost adapted an earlier season of Super Sentai in the early 1980s called Sun Vulcan (after already licensing Spider-Man to Toei in the late 70s which they created a live action TV show out of).
Lee (with Margaret Loesch), pitched his Sun Vulcan idea to several American TV networks, and they all rejected it.
So when Saban got his hands on Sentai, he wanted to adapt Bioman (which was the season that was airing in Japan at the time) and he too got rejected by American TV networks. Saban at least produced a pilot that never aired, but the show sat on the shelf for nearly 10 years until he pitched it to Margaret (the same one who worked with Stan Lee years earlier), and she was the one who gave Saban's Power Rangers the green light.

Then with power rangers, he became a big figure behind Fox Kids as a whole with things like the Digimon dub, bringing TMNT into the block, etc. Heck, he later became a big investor behind a major presidential campaign in 2016 (it was the one that lost though 😅)

To shed a little light on the Disney Era I want to share that my daughter grew up watching Power Rangers with me and after the Zordon era ended I noticed a big shift in her when returning from school.
Usually she'd come back with daily stories about what she and other kids at her school thought about the current season and now (post In Space) she and the other kids had far less to say. There seemed to be true interest only in the twist of the pink ranger in Lost Galaxy and the ending of Time Force. And I remember that none of the kids seemed to like Forever Red very much but that might have to do with color preference as most of them hated the color red and I guess that had an influence on which rangers they were and weren't drawn to.
Then Ninja Storm happened and there was an obsession among my daughter and the other kids at her school. With the first female blue ranger Tori, with the ninja motif that offered the rangers inherent abilities separate from their Morpher granted ones, with the hamster mascot Sensei, with Cam's journey to green samurai ranger, with Lothor and his nieces Marah and Kapri too.
It was very clearly a season that renewed interest and ratings and feedback seemed to concur. Rather than being the return to form I think Dino Thunder just capitalized well on the success of Ninja Storm. I also feel it worth mentioning the Ninja Storm and Dino Thunder crossover was the most talked about thing for my daughter and the kids at her school ever. This crossover was for whatever reason the epitome of badass to them.
They all collectively stopped caring about the franchise in general after Dino Thunder outside of checking out the Once A Ranger crossover from Operation Overdrive and having praise for it. Along with IMHO inevitable talks of a future season with the Retro Rangers team featured in that until they realized it would never happen.
They really liked seeing Tori and Kira again and the fact that Tommy wasn't the ranger at the center of the team.
After that crossover the last time my daughter had any kind of story to share about Power Rangers was one where she mentioned that her circle of friends who still even payed attention to the franchise wished Antonio was the main character in Samurai/Super Samurai and how annoyed they were at the botch that was the handling of the first female red ranger Lauren.
I myself lost interest circa Zeo, but it was interesting seeing each season and examining the highs and lows in them. I enjoyed seeing the different ways each tried to evolve the franchise's formula.
IMHO there's not really a season that was bad just some that were better than others and it boggles my mind that so many people still put Mighty Morphin at the top of their list when ranking them from best to worst as in retrospect all of Mighty Morphin was pretty gosh darned rough.
The low budget is so obvious from the presentation and production value. Some of the acting (sweet Jesus) and dialogue (product of its time though it might be) there also hasn't aged gracefully. You can really see how much Kimberly's actress in particular had to grow into her role watching it again blessed may she be.

I’d say my peak of Power Rangers fandom was from Lost Galaxy to SPD (and watching many replays of the original arcs in between). I was feeling Ranger fatigue when Mystic Force was starting up and when I watched the premiere episode, I just couldn’t gel with it and the characters didn’t exactly leave a strong first impression on me. But I certainly don’t envy the task of having to follow up Dino Thunder and SPD, they were seriously tough acts. Plus I was turning 13 at the time so I was feeling pressured to move on to other interests. I’ve seen bits and pieces of subsequent seasons throughout the years since, but that run of Ranger seasons I was on really was tv magic for me. My first Power Rangers were S.P.D and Dino Thunder. They used to air S.P.D repeatedly in India and every kid knew Doggy Kruger. It's like a childhood nostalgia. S.P.D was my favourite, from it's morphin sequence to songs to characters. I still remember them. 😭 Same goes for Dono Thunder.
Alongside, I absolutely loved Ninja Storm for it's light hearted environment and thought the fight between Thunder Rangers and Wind Rangers was a huge deal lol. The crossover between Ninja Storm rangers and Dino Thunder Rangers, that Japanes/Super sentai reference everything is nostalgic and beautiful for me.
I wasn't a big fan of Mystic Force and kinda liked Operation Overdrive but that's because it was interesting to see them fight, pull out their weapons in style and I liked the concept of magic and adventure.
However, the true MVP is RPM which I failed to completely grasp at the age of 10 but now that I look back, I absolutely get blown over by how detailed and well-crafted this show was. Despite some hiccups in plot, it took it's characters seriously, was genuinely funny at times, poked fun at it's own morphing and roll-call stuff, dealt with themes that are hard to portray with ease and so on.
Fast forward to Dino Charge, I already was in college and it was my younger sister with whom I sat down to watch it. Before this, I was disappointed with Samurai as it felt a bit too empty. Megaforce was a snooze fest and made me so angry because the characters literally were just cardboard cutouts. They even shamelessly copied every scene with no improvisation or even attempted to add anything. Dino Charge was interesting and I liked the characters and the whole hunting for 10 dinogems was a cool concept. The side villians were interesting and I was looking forward how that half-human half-monster being would torture rangers in its super season. Dino Super Charge was, unfortunately, just okay. Not too engaging or depth like it's predecessor and I also ended up dropping it coz I got busy.
I haven't seen any more power rangers but I tried to watch few clips on youtube and it's not that cool anymore. That Ninja one was as bad as it could be, I did see the potential but it went to waste.
The Hasbro power rangers brought back a bit of a personality to their characters but I don't know, it wasn't going anywhere for me. It felt like they think kids cannot handle darker themes and conflicts seemed to be resolved way to easily.
Dino Fury looked interesting (I think it's the current season with its super season as well). I have watched few episodes and was thinking to continue further since I liked an awkward red ranger and green girl seemed to get more footage but I kinda liked her and her brother and the whole bad parenting troupe (I stopped at ep 6 so don't know if I m wrong, no spoilers plz)
Overall, I would say I would like it more if they set up charatcer's personal motivations and make them face their fears with their whole power ranger duties either coming in their way or changing their perception or something but they're not really setting up interesting charatcer arcs for past few seasons. Like everybody's (except one or two ranger) so cool with their powers? No struggle, no personal motivations interesting enough to create conflicts, no dreams? They're not even funny or quirky anymore.
This is the reason why I am getting over power rangers.

We need some key people who really care running and creating the show. It should be as good as the comics...that's what and possibly who we need working on the show. Don't stop doing adaptations either Hasbro, come on.

Probelm is Saban and to a lesser extent Hasbro gradually killed the show by trying to make Samurai onwards a clone of MMPR. Yet Hasbro blames the sentai adaptations. Had they allowed their writers to be creative and create an individual show for each season I'm sure the show would've done well, I mean look at some original takes like RPM, Time Force, Ninja Storm, In Space, Galaxy, Lightspeed, Dino Thunder. But the team just wanted MMPR copies that slowly killed the show. Also we had this anniversary season with Megaforce and it clearly feels like something they did because they were force and not something they did with passion for the fans. I mean look at Gokaiger all the work that went into that beautiful season and Megaforce they just slapped whatever together with hollow characters. That sad part is they were forced to behave that way because a lot of them spoke out and said they were told to dumb down their acting. I 100% believe if the MMPR mandates were dropped and Saban was operating like he did in his earlier. years this franchise would have been much more successful. What's sad is that Hasbro kept the MMPR mandates. If you want to relive MMPR again the best way to do it is Dino Thunder write a modern take of the story not copy the phrases and the characters.

I think a big part of the branding is the suits. The Nickelodeon era really didn’t put too much love into them, with mostly solid color spandex with simple designs, when before even solid color suits like the Mystic force suits looked really good. The silver super mega force and the gold samurai rangers where a big step away and I remember liking them a lot more than the others as a kid. The MMPR suits are simplistic but have a common pattern of white and red then just being red with white accents

We got the best pink Ranger of all time, Jen, and even with Katie, the females weren’t just damsels in distress like most of the ones before them. Katie was actually the strongest of the 5. This statement I have reflects on the show and not the toys:
Back when I first became a Power Rangers fan, I used to like Samurai and Megaforce. But around the time I was 16 during Dino Supercharge, I came to my senses and saw all the flaws in Neo-Saban executions. I even spent a whole year binge-watching every Power Rangers season there was, MMPR to Dino Charge, and that point on I started to learn how Saban Brands and Nickelodeon underestimated both children and fans, forcing MMPR aesthetics like it’s still 1993, and neglected to understand modern society in 2010s and 2020s (smartphones, fashion, fidget spinners, etc.) I see this problem being Saban Brands’ budget because it was formed in 2010; it was a small company. Big brands like that meant more than Saban could handle. I wish to say that if Haim Saban wasn’t a billionaire.
With Power Rangers under Hasbro, I was hoping for major improvements for Beast Morphers. I had mixed feelings for it and the flaws stick out to me once again; while it tried to not rush the lore over the fillers, unnatural dialogue and lack of impact with the plot was still there and could have killed my interests. I wished Beast Morphers Season 2 had a better ending IMO; didn’t like the human Steel thing and didn’t fit his characteristic. With Dino Fury, I was hoping the show gets better and it still improved in some parts. I wanted Hasbro to hire new writers and executives for the show. But by that time Dino Fury S1 aired, I started to distance myself from Power Rangers in favor of retro and indie gaming and a bit of Kamen Rider. Overall, I have strong hope that Hasbro should know how to make Power Rangers enjoyable and relevant again.

It wasn't until the 2017 movie came out that I decided to pay attention to the franchise again. I watched some seasons I missed that I was recommended and enjoyed (Jungle Fury and RPM). I tried watching some of the shows from the Neo Saban era, and I couldn't bring myself to finish it. It felt like a massive regression from all the progress the brand had made to this point, all to capture the glory days of MMPR and to milk the nostalgia for all it's worth. Then I was introduced to the comics and Hyper Force and fell in love with them because they provided me with everything I think the shows haven't for over a decade. I got into power rangers with Light speed as a very young kid seeing re-runs in Europe. What I think has been lost the most in the evolutions that Saban originally under took was it had a story or themes that were more mature in some ways like in Light speed with the silver rangers arc and the whole car accident into watching your child potentially fall to their death. I think during the Disney era SPD also did a good job with some more complex ideas simplified to allow younger viewers feel like they are understanding a bigger picture and for those who missed it/didn't care it didn't destroy the shows pacing.

Also: Even as a guy i found it awesome, when Leo ripped his shirt away to fight Dracina with only the Quasar Sword.
After that, i didn't had the TV capabilities to watch other shows so i never watched Lightspeed Rescue and Time Force. My reentry came with Dino Thunder and that thing was awesome. A new Team and with Tommy as Mentor.

In India, when there was no kids' content much in 90s, the power rangers were introduced which was dubbed in many Indian languages and it took channel's TRP to a whole new level. And in 2000s, that's when mystic force, Dino thunder, ninja storm came, the TRP of Jetix (channel that was telecasting power rangers at that time if I'm not wrong) sky rocketed and almost every kid was addicted to those shows. But I guess RPM was the last nostalgic power rangers. Later, despite samurai was good, the fandom gradually reduced (atleast here in India). Power Rangers was so popular here in the USA, it even aired in Japan when it wasn't supposed to, originally. It even got a Japanese dub and Power Rangers was actually pretty popular in its' own right over there and they consider that and Sentai to be two separate shows, since they made enough differences. It is pretty cool that Japan is one of several regions to where they had both the original Super Sentai and its' U.S. adaptation Power Rangers released dubbed. But it is a bit confusing and has its' own history over there, like how Kamen Rider had a history here in the west.
MMPR was given a Japanese dub and made its' debut on October 5, 1995. Only Season 1 and most of Season 2 of it was dubbed, only 100 episodes total. For some reason, the dub voice cast was changed for MMPR after episode 49. But the rest of Season 2 (the last 12 episodes did not get shown) as well as Season 3 wasn't dubbed, despite it actually had pretty good ratings and even aired on TV Asahi, the same open broadcast network as Super Sentai, but was on a different timeslot to avoid conflict with Sentai. As for the MMPR movie, it was dubbed but with a different voice cast. Yet, because Season 3 wasn't dubbed, it didn't lead them to Zeo, which was also skipped.
After the 100 episodes of MMPR and the movie, they then just went straight to Turbo, as they aired the Turbo movie on TV in 1999, then later aired the series. But unlike the other seasons, they did dub both the movie and all episodes in full. As well as In Space and Lost Galaxy, as all episodes were dubbed from those two as well. With all episodes of In Space being dubbed, that even included the crossover with the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles from Ninja Turtles The Next Mutation, making it the only time Japan ever saw any form of it, and the only time Venus de Milo got seen by Japanese audiences. TMNT is also popular in Japan too.
Only 24 out of 40 episodes of Lightspeed Rescue were dubbed as some episodes were skipped. But Time Force and most of the Disney era shows did not get dubbed nor even subtitled. Although they did dub SPD in 2011 and Mystic Force in 2012. Interestingly for SPD, Toei got back the Dekaranger cast to reprise their roles to dub over their western counterparts, as commemoration of the 35th anniversary of Super Sentai while Gokaiger was airing, as a first of a part of Toei's "Power Rangers Japanese dubbing project."
The last of the PR series to get a Japanese dub was Power Rangers Samurai. Megaforce was only shown with subtitles. And the very last PR project to get a Japanese dub, was the 2017 reboot movie.
When it comes to the most popular Power Rangers seasons to air in the country and given that they were dubbed and aired in full, Japanese fans usually pick Lost Galaxy and SPD, which I can understand why the latter got popular there.
It's not likely if Toei will ever dub or subtitle more PR in the future, given they also have Super Sentai already. But as I said earlier, they are two separate shows.

@@ToQ_Ridergou When MMPR got a Japanese dub and was airing staring on October 5, 1995 on TV Asahi, they were also having Chouriki Sentai Ohranger on, at that time. 30 episodes were already airing up to that date. Episode 30 aired on September 29, 1995 followed by Episode 31 airing October 13, 1995. There was a bit of a gap given how most new episodes usually air once every week on one after another.

Thanks haha. Yeah I just turned 17 and I’ve been a fan since Samurai when I was like 5. Being apart of the fandom for so long made me stumble upon a lot of old messageboards where I’ve seen the insane amount of hate for Overdrive (which hasn’t changed much) and quite a bit for Jungle Fury too (which I think has changed). I also very much feel where a lot of the criticism came from. When I rewatched in 2016 or so I remembered it feeling so unlikeable.
And that RPM comment, man it makes me really hope that I can get an experience like that with Cosmic Fury or whatever comes after as I’m about the same age now as you were then and I wanna get deeply invested in a currently airing rangers show. Anyways thanks for watching and enjoying my video! The support always makes me happy!

Now as for best arc, I think the best Arc ever in power rangers history was the psycho rangers arc. That was so interesting. Not a monster of the week, an actual arc. There there was the whole big bad being his sister and turning into the pink ranger. The rangers being part Turbo, which were part Zeo. The Titanium ranger thing. The ships. Everything was so awesome, and even when it turned "Lost Galaxy" and it has the Astrozord too it was just such an awesome period for power rangers.
Now the Samurai arc was apparently a good arc for lots of people too. But I never loved it quite as much as the psycho ranger arc. And this coming from someone who watched MMPR premiere live.

Psycho rangers arc is the best arc in the whole power ranger history.
Even in Lost Galaxy, that arc is superior for being the connecting eps for the pink ranger change. And i thought it was scripted bcs the pink is the first one to die in In Space, and she’s the last one to die in Lost Galaxy.

As someone who generally grew up in the Disney Era of Power Rangers I recall Mystic Force being less of a 'failure' and more split between more recent fans versus people who'd been around since some of the older seasons as it was definitely the series (at the time.) changed a lot of the usual Power Rangers formula starting with thematic (though that in part has to do with the Super Sentai series.)
And while there is a lot of 'flak' given to Samurai by older fans it 100% did get people back into Power Rangers and I feel like a lot of that flak comes from the next series being Megaforce which yeah no matter the Era of Power Rangers you were a fan of at the time you 100% probably felt annoyed with it.

I wont nitpick certain things but as someone whose been with the series from the start, dropped out early into Disney era and just went full sentai, your video does help me gauge where the series misteps lay and why its been hard to get back into it. @ToQ_Ridergou  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Yeah man. Well what season in particular did you drop off with in the Disney era and was it because you didn’t like it or did Sentai itself make you disinterested?
I feel like you should definitely check out RPM if you haven’t already. That one was super super different from Go-Onger and definitely worth everyone’s time for just executing a great concept very well. I also think you may wanna check out Dino Fury even if you don’t end up liking it as it gives context as to where power Rangers is right now in its direction. Jungle Fury you might wanna check out if Gekiranger wasn’t for you. The word on the street is that everyone always likes one and not the other, they’re like different takes on the same show essentially.

    • @ZEOAGITO
      @ZEOAGITO ปีที่แล้ว

@@ToQ_Ridergou I dropped out a few episodes into SPD's airing, from then, I did swap exclusively to Sentai. Since Magiranger was my first Sentai week to week and Dekaranger was watched at the same time, I felt a slight "been there done that" feeling. Also there was a Toku-Snob side I had developed when I first discovered the source material, but thats long passed.
But since I have seen Sentai Week to Week SINCE 2004, theres only a handful of seasons I NOPE'd out of during initial viewing and Go-Onger was one of them due to the Go-Onwings. So RPM sounds like a good contender, meanwhile Gekiranger was one of my Favorites at the time so I'm a little hesitant on Jungle Fury for that reason.

Very great video, Id like to add that ninja steel began well but did have a decline similar to dino charge. NS toys did always sell pretty poorly, I blame the 2017 film for taking up all the attention toy wise. So many kids were confused over what figures to buy, even a amount of the 2017 toyline took a hit. I always blamed the 2017 film for the franchise’s decline financially but critically i guess it was declining since samurai. Speaking of which I definitely need to watch shinkenger, I always hear of samurai taking too much from it but hearing it really is a watered down version of it is wild.
