watching the whole series third time. everytime I find new things and get inspired. I got confident to do fashion design job while being a textile designer in Dubai just becasue of this channel. two years back this channel saved me and still Zoe the great is the one continuously providing with the greatest info possible. the best part is that as I am growing and coming back to watch her tutorials, I understand it more. I wish I meet Zoe some time in life and thank her with a huge hug. You are my fashion teacher Zoe. God bless you
I'm not a fashion student or in the industry but I love to learn about color theory. Your tutorial is excellent and can make sense to a variety of audience. Thanks for breaking this down in an easily understandable way. My wardrobe thanks you for it :)
currently doing my final year design collection and whenever i am lost somewhere or need a serious advice on how to go about with things i always watch your videos ..such an inspiration you are .Just love your videos
Even after school and working I still have to remind myself of color theory, I agree colors are very very if not most important thing ! And it takes practice to get your colors down ! Very good video !
This explanation of color theory is so interesting. My teacher was more focused on the ideas of tints, tones, and shades. He didn't go into such depth and application.
Do you have a video on icons of fashion or fashion history . Your amazing at breaking everything down. My semester is over and now I'm in a Zoe Hong bootcamp.
There was a great book I read on the most influential and popular fashion designers throughout the century, I wish I could remember the name... But it was great learning about all of them: Vivienne Westwood, John Galliano, Oscar de la Renta, Calvin Klein, Bob Mackey, Rei Kawakubo, Coco Chanel, Christian Dior, Diane von Furstenberg...the list goes on and on! You can find lots of books at the library on the most innovative designers.
I've always wanted to learn about color theory. I'm not in fashion, but I'm fascinated at how stylist can make or break an outfit just with how they put colors together. You can tell the masters from the amateur. For example, Rihanna's cover for Harper's Bizarre China. O.M.G...freakin orgasmic. Color is everything.
My goodness, I'm so happy to discover your channel after a decade of struggling with colors. I'm a dentist entering design and it's such a struggle to find authentic and practical information.
I love these videos. I am ~changing my whole career direction~ and want to go into fashion design. I'm trying for a fashion internship here before starting chool so I'm trying to learn the process on my own and these videos are invaluable. I thank you for the time you put into all of this!!!
omg..so so helpful video. Cleared so many things for me. your knowledge and the way you explain it is out of this world....so grateful that i came across your channel. thanks a ton :)
**Rabid Fan Alert** Hey Zoe! if it wasn’t for your videos, I’d literally be in the dark as far as preparing my portfolio for school. You’ve taught me such an array of tools I can use as a designer in a few short, yet complex videos. Idk dude you’re just so inspirational. Its really like you have more talent and teaching ability in one finger than my entire school faculty put together. Cheers!!
Your videos are incredible! I'm an artist just getting into fashion design, and your design process will be incredibly helpful for me in both fine art and fashion. Thank you for these videos, just stellar content. :D
your videos are so informative yet comical at the same time. I stumbled across your channel last week and have learned so much, down to denim furs hair, how it's a shape and not a whole bunch of strands of hair. I can't wait until your book is released. stay blessed and keep the videos coming.
I actually started sewing for fun and i already played around with fashion sketches Cinna is my inspiration from the hunger games the dude had a vision
yes you did pluck up a page from your chicken book haha! Also, I'm working my way through this playlist + it's super helpful - thank you so so much, Zoe! I'm just starting secondary school but ever since I was about 5-6 I've been wanting to become a fashion designer so I'm so happy to be applying all of your knowledge :))
I've been playing those colors before when I was a visual merchandising designer in UNIQLO Philippines, now I get it more and more thank you so much for this. 👍😉
I love your videos, so informative! I'm already starting to learn how to put together ideas using these tips! I'm learning to collect ideas and material before I even start sketching. So that way my ideas are fresh and not just recycled material! Thank you for this! I think all fashion majors should watch and learn from your videos!
Where's that button where you can donate money to a creator (I see it on some channels but not others)? I am so grateful to be able to watch your videos for free but you def deserve my coins. Over the years I've paid a ton for courses only to find the material presented in the most uninteresting way. I literally look at the world differently because of your colour lessons series. I'll be in traffic and look at cars and wonder how a colour was created. I'll look at the sky and try to mix colours in my head to get that exact shade. I'm much more interested in my surroundings now and I owe it to you and your wonderful way of teaching. Thank you so much!
+ViJo Stgo Hey, that's awesome! Welcome! (Nonfashion) Illustrators and animators like to take my illustration classes too. I'm glad to be of help to anyone who wants to learn!
Hi Zoe. I have been binge watching your channel. I would just like to say. Thank you so much. I am not a student of fashion, I love to art journal and craft ( love all of it ). You are so inspiring.
I been working a lot in color theory and until now it takes practice its a pain staking and continues process ...as a visual merchandiser and window dresser.....color is important or otherwise the collection will have a tendency to look cheap or trashy thank you so much Zoe!!!!!! 😊✌
Zoe you are brilliant! thank you for these videos. Your construction cone comment cracked me up! Btw totally gonna look out for the extraordinary chickens book, that was wonderful
I'm going through the fashion design process series and having a blast learning so much and taking so many important notes! I'm a bit confused though about how I can implement this knowledge practically since I'm an absolute beginner. I can't start working on a collection following these steps just like that, right, since I have absolutely no prior experience in fashion design. How have you guys been implementing all this knowledge so far?
u are just so amazing, i cant stop watching ur videos. its a third day :)) your content is super quality and u have great skill to explain all the information. im so happy i found u, i'm a lost soul, who always wanted to be related with colors somehow, and this videos are gold in cave or brilliant stone in nutshell for me :)) ⭐❤️
Hi Zoe, love your videos so much, they are just so clear and preciese. I leterally spend a whole day just to finish all the videos and started practicing, cant wait for the Fabric video to be posted. --Peng
Zoe Hong Checked that video.. U explained nicely about leather.. And u said it right.. being fashion designers..we need to attend workshops n we need to always keep ourselves updated wth th textile related things.. 👍👍
Zoe, you're the best! I'd like to binge watch all your videos when the semester ends. lol Also, can you make a video about designing itself? I'd love to get to know how your mind works in transforming concepts into designs. Thanks a bunch!
+Nicole Wong Hey, thank you! The designing part is coming! This video series on design process will include a video on how to develop silhouettes and details from your visual research, but after a video on fabric, because you always pick colors and fabrics before you start designing.
I love your videos ❤︎ Thank you for making such great videos always :) I have a quick question - when you pick colors for your collection, do you consider trend colors for the season you're designing for? Or, can we just choose colors based on your preference/inspiration? Apologies if you've already made a video on this - pls let me know which video to watch in that case. Thank you so much!
Could you do a series of videos on a approach to design where the approach is more abstract and conceptual based and explores the idea of none tangible references. In the style of a conceptual artist approaching fashion design like Rei Kawakubo?
it was really helpful,i wonder why my teachers didn`t tell me these things about color theory and design process. really great!! i was wondering if you could tell me how we incorporate or work with the color trend forecasts and the colors we derive out of our inspirations.???? because at times the colors we derive from inspirations are not at all in the forecasts of the seasons.
>>because at times the colors we derive from inspirations are not at all in the forecasts of the seasons. Fashion forecasters are not psychic. What's the definition of Undertone. I've searched all over and can't find a definition of it (a general hint I've found is that an undertone is something like a hue family). I know what it means generally but not in the context of fashion. Is an undertone the temperature?? My best guess/interpretation of what you said in this clip at frame 5:11 ("You would use a cool tone red because it has it shares a blue undertone...") is that since red is warm and blue is cool, by mixing a cool red with blue, we're transitioning to the blue, therefore a cooler temperature, as such, they share a common temperature (cool). Is this what you meant? Is that the definition of Undertone? I'm dying to figure this out. Bugs me that I don't understand the term undertone in this context.
About the color theory... your specs are soo cool With red in the bottom of it(looking great with cheek tone) and black in upper section(looking great with eyebrows) Am I going in the right direction?

The "same burgundy" trick sold it. Let me go sign up for this color theory class now becauseee I am mind blown!
Do you have a video on icons of fashion or fashion history . Your amazing at breaking everything down. My semester is over and now I'm in a Zoe Hong bootcamp.
I'm going to do a costume history series next year if there's enough interest.
Yes!! I can't wait for that! I love costume design!

I personally don't, but many do. You can check out what Pantone's up to, sign up on fashion forecasting websites like WGSN for inspiration.
Thank you! I'll check out their websites. It's also good to know that it's not a must to follow the trend..
Zoe Hong can you tell me the main difference between warm and cold colors

You are very sweet teacher. thanks for this video
You're welcome!
Thank you for everything thank you so much
..😊😊😃 great job .
I am in love with color theory and your video broke down the concepts what the maximum amount of colors you can have in your color scheme??? thank you
There is not maximum and there is no minimum. There is only what works for you and what you can make look good.
it was really helpful,i wonder why my teachers didn`t tell me these things about color theory and design process. really great!!

Thank you so much you are wonderful 👍
About the color theory... your specs are soo cool With red in the bottom of it(looking great with cheek tone) and black in upper section(looking great with eyebrows)
Am I going in the right direction?
Yes! Looking at the whole picture and what colors work with the colors around them, and not just the color by itself. Yes.
yeeeessss. your reply inspires. thanks
I really enjoy these series and I learn a lot. Thank you!
I was wondering if you could write down the designers you mentioned during the video. I'm not a native English speaker and the subtitles didn't help me at all lol
Muy bien! Gracias por compartir esta información 👏♥️🇧🇴👍
What happens if your customer is someone like me who noticed that the burgundy was the same colour? 🤔
Id probably go all out on color of course punchy and oversaturated color has kinda been my thing im always told i color way too dark and that my choices are insteresting i do this thing when i wear stuff it ends up being miss matching patterns Im just now starting to figure out how style works
p.s. and ur smile is something high level! 🌞🍾
I love watching you and this was really great to watch, but it also reminded me of how unreasonable art teachers are regarding "magazines". The sheer amount of money it takes to buy 3+ magazines per month, every month, in order to have access to the kind of imagery you want to represent in your final project is pretty suffocating financially and morally. I'd rather not contribute to pollution and that my teachers would be levelheaded regarding my disposable income lol.
😍😍😘Thanks. So informative!
+Lena Ne You're welcome! :)
thank you so much!
I see Zoe likes to name drop alot of the Asian designers: Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Rei Kawakubo (Commes des Garçons), UNIQLO...I see you Zoe, not mad at that lol. I would be giving a shout out to all the peeps that look like me too LOL Although there aren't much well known black designers out there.. 🤔
What's the name of the markers or colors you use? -thank you -Noah
you're my hero
Zoe, how to determine customer profile ? Is it by choosing a muse as in celebrity ?
No, it's more involved than that. It's figuring out who will buy your clothes. This can include but is not limited to: gender, age, income level (broke college kids trying to look cute on a budget? older women with extra money looking for better work clothes?), hobbies and lifestyle (are they athletic and wear a lot of sneakers and yoga pants? do they love going out dancing at night and need cute dresses?), style preference (minimalist? ruffles everywhere? lots of black?) all those sorts of things.
lightness, saturation and temperature, how do you account for hue?
maam if I want to develop prints how will I reach to that part through this?
color and texture ❤
Thanks 💙
Did you ever teach for the art institute nyc?
nope
what subjects do you teach? and where?
Thank you teacher
superb
zoe what is the main difference between warm and cold colors
Warm colors: red, orange, yellow. Cool colors: green, blue, purple. And then you can have cool reds by adding a little blue, you can have warm greens by adding a little yellow, etc. Warm pinks have a little more red/orange/coral undertones, cool pinks have more blue.
Zoe Hong 👍👍
wow you are awesome!
What if you have multiple muses
Pick one per collection or you'll get scatterbrained and lose cohesiveness.

+Zoe Hong continue making more videos and hope you know about me very soon :) I'd love to watch a video from you talking about the working process of Alexander McQueen or maybe explaining about him and how important is him for the fashion world! That'd be amazing and I'be really thankfull. XOXO
I really don't know much about Alexander McQueen so I can't really do a video on him.
Best in the bunch ;) I recommend to watch this video from the very beginning to the end! 👍👍👍 great concept of color! Thanks :)
Thank you and you're welcome!
Really enjoying your videos keep up with the good work!
