Miss this guy on the Leafs. Only guy to consistently put up points. Classless Toronto media lighting a fire under his ass only to drive him out of town. I'm glad he won the cup, and go figure, the very next season after being traded.

it wasnt that he was hard to coach, it was the fact that the maple leafs didnt know how to coach him.

Exactly. Organization is just a cesspool. Socially awkward doesn't equal a coach killer or a quitter. Joke fans and media needed a scapegoat, and he was the convenient target.

    • @davidmccalla6799

And we we're trying to build a team around him and you don't build around players like Phil.

    • @seanmclellan7094
      @seanmclellan7094 8 ปีที่แล้ว +9

That's a joke. If you actually believe management did a reasonable attempt at building a team around him you're an idiot. Who did they bring in that was close to his talent level? Noteables include: Lupul, Phaneuf, and JVR. Over the course of 6 years? Is that acceptable to you? Because other than JVR, none of those players would be first pairing or first line players yet they were the best the Leafs had to offer in those 6 years. That's a pathetic attempt at building around any player let alone Kessel.

It was definitely a fun roster and those guys seemed to love playing together. The early 90s Pen' s roster will always be the best in regards to pure talent. It might be one of the top 3 teams ever constructed with Ron Francis, Stevens, Jagr, Lemieux, Joe Mullen, Straka, Murphy, Doug Brown, Coffey, Samuelson, and Tocchet.

At all the Pitt fans shitting on Toronto fans, a lot of us where cheering for Phil in the playoffs and understand what he offered our team even if the shitty Toronto media didn't. And if we weren't its because we wanted your pick to be higher. I'm happy Phil won himself a cup.

So - did you tell the shitty Toronto media to shut their yaps? Of course Pens fans are going to make fun of ya. Toronto paid a good bit of Kessel's salary while he went on to become the leading scorer in teh playoffs.
So management must have been happy to get rid of the fat hotdog man as well. And we all know the best way to build a team is to get rid of the best player on it.
Thanks though, we kinda like the guy. Maybe you can see the cup when he brings it to Toronto.

Not sure why anyone was surprised with his performance. He had a history of elevating his play when playoff time came around. He did it in Boston. He did it in Toronto. And as this video suggests, he did it in Pittsburgh.
Also, he was robbed of the Conn Smythe. He was better than Crosby for at least most of the playoffs.

its good to see kessel doing so great i hate to see a guy like that sad or in a slump...we watched him in toronto he scored 37 goals avg for 3 years then we had to trade him cause we needed changes but we will get him back in toronto in the future ....he has to always be doing great and feeling rich n happy i hope he gets 40 or even 50 next year back to back penguins should get him running for 90 point season next year practice makes perfect i wonder how much money he got when won the stanley cup he should always be chillings feeling good go phill kessel Go

Easily the best player in that playoff. Should've won the Conn Smythe IMO.

100% agree, i'ved talked about this once a month since he was hosed! HBK line was the reason the pens won, and Kessel was the best of them. My man carried the load!

Phil was tortured and disrespected in Toronto by his coach and GM, and the media. Enjoy your 3 rings PK.,
Toronto got what you deserve too, ahhhh 1967 love it ❤
Honorable mention to Kadri too !

You have to realize that many fans are idiots. He was his own person and more introverted and individualistic. Some people can't stand that. Some fans always blame their best players if the team loses. I remember the trade Sundin crap early in his career. Phil was nothing but first class here in Toronto. A gifted scorer who can generate offense by himself. I am happy for Phil, he put up with so much nonsense here.

All I know, is what I experience, and Phil Kessel had more points on the board, than crosby, the day he was traded to pittsburgh he scores he assists, Hockey is not a game of I like You? or I don't Like You? some coaches wish to blame their shortcomings on players, and Kessel, is an easy target, after the media hounded him out of toronto!
Don't listen or talk to the media, does he score, find a coach that has the mentality to be able to influence their players to just" Do the Right Thing" on the ice! coaching is a partnership with each and every player, many coaches are unable to comprehend that?
