As someone who heard this song when it first came out on tik tok and got obsessed with it I wanted to say how happy I am with how this turned out! To me, this song isn't saying that life is pointless and that we don't matter and we should just give up like I've heard some people say about the lyrics, to me it's more along the lines of the philosophy of optimistic nihilism. We are here for only a blink of an eye in the whole timeline of the universe. Each of us are tiny little ants on a giant rock hurtling through the infinite expanse of space. In that respect, yes, we are small and unimportant. As individuals, we statistically won't make a big enough impact on the world for our legacy to be remembered for more than a couple of generations. But I don't think this song is saying that means that what we do here doesn't matter. We mattered because of the butterfly/ripple effect, the idea that our very existence on this earth changes the lives of those around us and subsequently the lives of everyone on earth. We matter because we are here. We also matter because we are a small part of a collective group. Part of optimistic nihilism is that belief that, because there is no inherent meaning to our lives and we were just brought into existence by a long string of coincidences, we get to decide what our life is going to mean. That's what this song means to me. I'm here for such a small blip of time, I am going to spend my blip creating my own meaning, getting as much out of it as I possibly can, and not sweating the small stuff because no one will remember me in 1000 years anyway. For me it's this temporary nature of our existence that makes it so beautiful. The world will move on and forget me when I'm gone, but for now I am alive and my existence is causing a ripple effect that will still be felt long after my name is said for the last time. Anyway, that's just the way I see the song, so take it with a grain of salt, all I know is I will for sure be blasting this non stop for the foreseeable future.
