36:01 there are patterns that include TH-cam videos. The video links are only available to those who purchase the pattern so just something to look for! 😊
@ not yet! I’m super intimidated by clothing! I’ve done a kindle sleeve 😀 I’m loving her vest, I think the vest or the lane pants will be my first make! I’m binging her channel currently to watch her processes and see what looks the easiest 😂❤️
Frogging is a natural part of working in the fiber arts! No matter how good you get, you're always going to have to take apart projects (even fully finished ones) for any number of reasons. Give yourself more credit, making something for yourself out of yarn if a HUGE accomplishment!
Beautiful crochet items!! I am a knitter myself and I just wanted to validate the fact that your garments grew a lot in blocking, you're not doing anything wrong and you're not crazy!! Unfortunately, superwash yarn is known to block out A LOT so you have to account for that when you choose your size and/or be very careful not to tug on the wet item at all or it will stretch like crazy. This is probably also why you didn't see the growth in the gauge swatch, it doesn't have the weight of the whole garment behind it. For garments, I would highly recommend just using 100% wool instead of superwash. I know the wool part sounds intimidating, but it is super easy to care for and the fabric itself has self-cleaning properties so you don't have to wash the garment often at all. Also highly recommend you get into knitting if you like the idea of making sweaters 🥰
As a seasoned crocheter, I have to say you have done a PHENOMENAL job on your sweater!!! No criticism here, just understanding because I totally understand the frustration of messing up and having to redo your work!! You’re doing amazing!! ❤❤
The three costers are cute it's actually called African flower granny square and its available for free in youtube or other platforms so don't worry it's fine to share 13:10 and it's great that you did all this progress in 5 months really talented ❤ god bless you 😊
Cardigan: Superwash always blocks bigger and stretches out after wearing it. Because they take some of the natural squish out of it when creating the yarn it doesn’t have as much memory in the wool.
All of your finished projects look amazing! I'm also a beginner (I knit instead of crochet)and a few things I have learned is superwash wool blocks out more than a non superwash wool and you want to make sure to block your gauge swatches the same way you block your final garment. Also try to make sure that when you are taking your pieces out of the water that you aren't letting them hang out of your hands ( the weight can make your project stretch out). 😊
Crocheter for over a decade, knitter of about a year and a half; your I Smell Snow sweater is gorgeous. The yarn has beautiful drape, the color is amazing, it looks fantastic. It does not look like a beginner made it one bit! Most knitting/crochet patterns, unless they’re specifically for beginners, will not have pictures. Undoing and re-doing, or learning to live with mistakes, is part of the craft, and has taught me a lot of patience! 🥲 You’re off to a phenomenal start.
Fellow sewist who has been wanting to learn a new craft that I could take w me to work when in office or while traveling. I signed up for a crotchet class @ a local Upcycle shop and it’s been so awesome just to have the instructor give me tips etc. Our first project hasn’t been too exciting tbh (mug cozy) & I had to redo it a few times also because as you said, it’s hard to see the stitches; and it’s still a bit wonky but I want to move onto more exciting projects! A few things I’ve struggled with is the counting aspect (hoping stitch markers will help) and the lack of diagrams, if any for patterns. I’m such a visual learner, having learned sewing from TH-cam mainly that I’ll read a pattern and blank out. Your crotchet journey is so inspiring & love all your projects so far! 🙌🏼
I am so proud of you for doing so many different projects. Your feedback on each project was so helpful to me. I appreciate that you have included where you got your patterns and your honest feedback about each one. I love your sewing patterns and crochet myself so I am excited to try a couple of these crochet projects.
I’m so glad you’ve gotten into crochet! I just started getting into it last year and I relate to ALL of the struggles you mentioned 😂 the green sweater did turn out great for all of your toil! 🤍
I started crocheting to feel closer to my grandmother after she passed. It was her favorite thing to do. TH-cam has been one of my most helpful resources. The ability to slow down the videos, rewatch and rewind has been super helpful and helped me to catch on pretty quickly when I first started. If you’re worried about ethics, I only watch people who are posting tutorials of their patterns. I understand wanting to learn how to read patterns and it sounds like you’re doing well with that. But this platform has been the most helpful for me and I have found some awesome channels that are perfect for beginners!
i love this video so so much! Your first projects are exceptionally well-made and you should be super proud, I was not doing these types of projects as a beginner crocheter. As someone who knits and crochets, a couple of tips on fibers and blocking: In general, for wearables, non-superwash wool is the "easiest" fiber - it keeps its structure and elasticity and does not grow much with blocking. Superwash wool, alpaca, and plant (cellulosic) fibers - so cotton, linen, bamboo, viscose - all of these tend to grow, sometimes quite a lot! With that being said, you can plan for this by blocking your gauge swatches! this can help you see how much the fabric will grow - just measure before and after blocking. Fibers that are blended with a synthetic (nylon, acrylic, polyamide) also grow less. Another note on patterns - unless they are specifically written for beginners, most knitting and crochet patterns do not have pictures or tutorials - this is pretty standard and assumes you have a base knowledge of certain stitches and garment constructions. This can definitely be frustrating! But the trial and error of learning how to read patterns well is so worth it. I look forward to seeing how you progress in your crochet (and think you should definitely take up knitting... not that I'm biased or anything lol)
Great video. Aged 68 years I have attempted to learn to crochet several times. I can knit and I sew but crochet seems so tricky! My granddaughter asked me to help her learn so now I have to figure it out. I'm a week in using TH-cam mainly and my brain hurts!! It's the simple things like 'how do I know which stitch is the last on the row', ' what should this stitch look like' 'where exactly do I insert my hook'.You've given me confidence to persevere knowing now it's not just me. Look forward with interest to learning the crochet language (I believe UK and US are different) Would love to watch any other crochet content from you. You're a great communicator and teacher. Thanks
I think the sweaters look amazing, Sydney! And yes, I learned crochet first, than sewing. And the sewing patterns/tutorials I've found have a lot more explanations/pictures than crochet ones do!
I absolutely love all your crochet creations! You really did well as a beginner! That scallop pillowcase - omg I am in love!! Looks so adorable and definitely suits your studio! I totally recommend trying tapestry crocheting - i started to enjoy crocheting again after few months of hiatus and it gave me lots of fun and ready pieces look absolutely amazing! Looking forward to seeing more of your crafty vlogs!
I have been crocheting for 15+ years. It was my first craft that I ever learned. I saw the pillow in the background and wondering all video where it was from! I love it!
Great video! I learned to knit before crochet and it took me years to gain the confidence (and skill) to read a crochet pattern. It’s a really interesting point you brought up about the way crochet patterns tend to be more bare bones than sewing patterns . I’ve never heard that perspective before. I think we are headed in a more inclusive direction with patterns , and it would be nice to see more patterns written with beginners in mind. I may not be a beginner anymore but there are still skills and types of crochet that I am still a beginner with. I think it takes a lot of skill and talent to write a very clear pattern, as you know!! Looking forward to your next video!
Loved this! I’m on the struggle bus with learning to crochet. It just doesn’t click and my hands won’t cooperate! Definitely need to invest more time instead of just reverting back to sewing all of the time. Thanks so much for sharing your honest journey so far and brilliant makes! 🫶🏽
Everything you made is incredible! I don’t think you give yourself enough credit. :) I especially love the pillow cover and I really love hearing about the process and not just a perfect “here’s what I made” exhibit.
As a consistent crocheter of 5 yrs, I honestly think you did a great job considering some of these projects were def meant for a more intermediate maker! Just wanted to say that messing it up and getting frustrated means you're getting there. It took me about a year in to really get my "AHA!" moment and truly understand what I was doing. Also thanks for all of the great sewing tips since I am trying to branch out into other crafts myself! 💞
I love seeing your crochet journey! It can be so deflating to frog something over and over but the sweater turned out sooo cute! If you haven't already I'd really suggest making Ravelry account. You can find both crochet and knit patterns for anything from clothes to homewares. The patterns have reviews, comments, and projects that other people have made. I've found it so so helpful when choosing a pattern to make because you can learn from the experiences of others. I started with crochet too and now have been knitting for a year. There is a learning curve but now I feel like knitting works for me so much more than crochet. Coming from a sewing background as well, it is much easier to kind of "tailor" knits after the fact using lifelines and other techniques. If you are interested in knitting I'd so recommend it!! Love this kind of video from you
Lovedd this video! Watched it while crocheting😊 I find COSMAUDI patterns very nice and thorough, clear instructions and pictures & video’s as well! Very curious to see your progress on this new craft during the year. It is honestly so impressive what you already made in these first few months!! Keep up the good work❤️
Aaah congrats on learning how to crochet! I'm first and foremost a knitter, then a sewist (mostly thanks to you) and I'm planning to elarn to crochet this year to make accessories so it's so nice to listen/see your journey! I don't like the result of crocheted clothes (especially sweaters or tshirts) and that's why I will always do them in knitting so big kudos to you to pick up such big projects too!!
I’ve been crocheting for almost 3 years now and there’s still soooooo much I’m learning 🫣 from what I’ve learned in my experiences it stretches A LOT. And sweaters are rather challenging to make, I’ve only completed 1 sweater so far. Personally I prefer to crochet smaller projects like- winter hats/bucket hats/amigurumi/sweater vests/etc. That’s why I’ve been so excited to get into sewing!! I look forward to making pants/dresses etc. I’m working on sewing my first project right now, the tote bag :) I personally wish I would’ve learned how to knit first, because I think it stretches less and I also personally prefer the look of a knit sweater. I have heard that knitting takes more time, but uses less yarn than crochet.
I’ve been crocheting since I was 5, so going on 20 years!! The best thing you can do is just practice over and over. Different stitches and techniques may seem difficult or confusing but they become so natural over time! I started with amigurumi as a child and probably exclusively crocheted amigurumi figures for 10 years. I’ve still yet to make myself a sweater but want to!! I mainly crochet accessories now, for myself and bonnets and bows for my baby (and I sell them!) I’ve been knitting since I was 10 but always preferred crochet, 2025 I’ve started seriously knitting and so far I’ve knit myself a raglan sweater and I’m 90% done with a frilly sleeve top! Practicing a different craft than your main one is so fun 💛 also your sweaters look amazing!!!
Random question: what sort of projects did you make when you started at 5 years old? I have a five year old son who loves watching me and is begging to learn but I don’t know where to start with him!
@ my first ever project was a veryyyy long chain to put as a garland on our Christmas tree! Chaining was all I could do for a bit lol. But then I practiced making coasters out of just square single crochet swatches! I didn’t learn single crochet till I was 6 and getting better hand coordination and that was the only stitch I knew for a while after that!
@ also! I’d definitely suggest getting him a veryyy chunky hook with some semi chunky yarn to practice chaining! A big hook will be easier for him to hold and learn with, and yarn smaller than suggested for the hook will help him see what he’s doing!
I learned to crochet amigarumi with a Woobles crochet kit. Each kit comes with a pdf pattern, and a step by step video for both Left handed and right handed people. Also crocheted an afghan with AnnieKnits club. They send you a kit each month for part of the afghan and also a link for step by step videos. I found it very helpful!
Your perseverance is so motivating! Its so easy to be pessimistic and give up. Good on you for frogging and making a wearable piece, I’m still too scared to even try a sweater 😂
As a crochet pattern designer, I so appreciate you talking about what you liked and disliked about patterns! With what you were saying about crochet patterns feeling rushed with not enough pictures, this probably has to do with the fact that the crochet pattern market is super saturated right now, as well as everyone putting tight deadlines on their designs. This sometimes means less time goes into one pattern and less pictures are taken. Another thing, most patterns are labeled for their difficulty. If you are a beginner, you need to look for beginner patterns unless you are ready for a challenge. Beginner patterns tend to have a lot of pictures and descriptions. Intermediate to advanced patterns have less because the designers are likely counting on the maker to have a decent amount of knowledge already. With all that being said, as someone who has been crocheting for 10+ years, I really loved the perspective from a beginner. It reminds me what a beginner crocheter needs and what I should add to my beginner patterns! So thank you!
I didn't see anyone else say anything about this but often Amigurumi is done in a spiral! It means that there is no seam. It took me a few projects to figured that out because nowhere mentioned it
I would totally recommend CIO Handmade for beginner friendly crochet patterns! I recently tested her newest pattern the Ella cardigan and the amount of details & photos is like nothing I’ve ever seen before! For reference the cardi pattern has 42 pages FULL of photos, everything is super clear and she even included before vs after photos of the blocking process!
I LOVEEE your videos! I know how to knit (veryyyy simple things) but have always thought crochet looked fun! I might have to make that scrunchie SO CUTEEEE thanks for sharingggg
As a knitter and crocheter, I have noticed that crochet patterns share way less details than knitting patterns. I can’t figure out why? Even crochet pattern descriptions are quite vague. For example, a knitting pattern description will share the type of yarn to use, size needle, how many yards you will need and these details are left out of many crochet pattern descriptions. Which is a deterrent to me because I’m not going to buy a pattern if I don’t know the details ahead of time. I usually pick patterns based on my stash. Then when I open a crochet pattern, it’s the Wild West compared to knitting patterns that typically leave links for tutorials or tips and tricks etc. They explain stitch counts per row, photos for reference. I also want to share that many crocheters do not use Ravelry! This blows my mind. I didn’t even know ravelry existed until I learned how to knit, I think it’s weird that many crochet patterns are only found on etsy but Ravelry is such a huge database for yarn creations. Crocheters never seem to talk about it or utilize it. Ravelry is great because you can see how many people made the same pattern with different yarns and they leave notes that you can learn from.
i’m a confident beginner and i just made the estrid scarf by tanjascrochet and i LOVED it!! i definitely had a learning curve with some of the stitches but it was so fun and i wear it all the time!!
Your channel popped up for me today. I’m glad I clicked on. I’m a newer crocheted also but a lot older than you 😊. Wow you have done so great ! Love your sweaters, they are beautiful. I would love to make them but scared. Can I ask would you blocked with? I haven’t blocked anything yet and that seems scary also. How did you learn to block? Thanks great video, I’m so happy to find a new crocheter who is talking about how to with frustrations included. I’ve been trying to make large dragons and I’ve gotten stuck a few times. Please keep crocheting and sharing info. I don’t sew but maybe someday 😊
I am also working on the justtheworsted Sweater at the moment and have made mistakes. I misread a few things, which can happen, but I think because everything is written in one paragraph for one row, it cannot be very clear if there is more than one thing to do. I bought it specifically because another TH-camr said it also had a video tutorial, but I was not able to find it. I am taking a break because it frustrates me too much at the moment.
also maybe if you did a video showing some of the mistakes that you made and how you fixed them? I love learning from you, you do a good job of explaining things :)
it is crazy how much you have done in just 6 months! I started about a year ago and still have a lot of issues keeping the tension consistent through the whole project and all of your stitches look so uniform right off the bat! I have never tried blocking before, it might be helpful if you gave a tutorial for that?
I also think your frustration with crochet patterns is very valid, there are many times I have bought a pattern and never finished the project because I got too confused. Most of the projects I have made have been from free patterns or videos on TH-cam that do actually show the process of each individual stitch as you are making it. Also starting with smaller things like a hat can be helpful to learn some of the more common stitches. You are killing it so far though you should be really proud of yourself!
Also, TCDDIY, here in TH-cam has 8 ish years of videos, I love her to pieces because she explains everything so well and has taught me (crocheting for 27 years) so many new things. Just don’t give up ❤
20:27 actually in crochet it would be easier to make things smaller rather than bigger because it's more manageable as you can block it or even add more rows ...
Hi, I’m new here. Breathing yarn spoke about you. I’m a crocheter and knitter imo you can get it better from a lot of sources. I’ll now learn to sew for me because I habe long arms and long legs and all things are to short on me 😢. I will peruse your channel!
I want to get into crocheting but I seriously don't think I have the patience. Your green sweater is adorable but that story was a nightmare! I 100% would have abandoned it... Crocheting might not be for me. Maybe if I ever get bored of sewing but I doubt it lol.
I feel like sewing is easier to start because good sewing patterns have waaay more instruction than knitting and crochet patterns... I feel like knitting and sewing patterns use so many shortend versions of words and no pictures..
I used this video making my airpods max covers th-cam.com/video/O4eQaRjBGOQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, at the time I couldn’t find any other instructions on it (If you want it to look like the pinterest picture, you could jist make a granny square in the middle and then work your way around it - experiment with it a bit) But there are way more videos rn from what I’ve seen just looking it up, so maybe you can find something you like I think since you are a visual learner, maybe it’s better to find in depth video tutorials instead of a patterns? Maybe you talked about why you want to use patterns instead but I don’t recall you saing that Anyways, everything you made is super cute🩷I know unraveling projects is super frustrating, but it’s always gonna be part of the process i fear, I probably unraveld more things than I have actually finished😁
As a crocheter who is using YOU as my sewing resource, this is awesome! It’s so scary to try something new!
36:01 there are patterns that include TH-cam videos. The video links are only available to those who purchase the pattern so just something to look for! 😊
Wow fellow crocheter who is also using Sydney to teach me to sew! 🪡
@KatieYoungArt yay!! I just attempted making shorts with her lane pant pattern and it was going good until it wasn’t 😂 have you made anything?!
@ not yet! I’m super intimidated by clothing! I’ve done a kindle sleeve 😀 I’m loving her vest, I think the vest or the lane pants will be my first make! I’m binging her channel currently to watch her processes and see what looks the easiest 😂❤️

I’ve been knitting since I was 10 but always preferred crochet, 2025 I’ve started seriously knitting and so far I’ve knit myself a raglan sweater and I’m 90% done with a frilly sleeve top!
@@EricaCecilia This is super helpful, thank you!! A garland for the Christmas tree is a genius idea, he’d be so excited to do that!
Superwash wool generally grows quite a bit during blocking ☺️
A 46 min Video, what a treat ❤
The pillow case is super cute 😍😍 , I’m learning how to crochet! I’m excited to see how my first project turns out
I learned to crochet amigarumi with a Woobles crochet kit. Each kit comes with a pdf pattern, and a step by step video for both
Left handed and right handed people.
I am kind of a beginner, and I taught myself to crochet. My favourite hook is the clover amour hook.
You did great! I love your sweater and cardigan!❤
I find that the panty hose type hair ties are so good for scrunchies. My hair is on the thicker side so they have plenty of stretch
I know you're frustrated and overwhelmed by the process of making the green sweater but that looks awesome!
Everything looks amazing! You did great!
I really like the pillow!
Ravelry is great because you can see how many people made the same pattern with different yarns and they leave notes that you can learn from.
love the pillow !!
i’m a confident beginner and i just made the estrid scarf by tanjascrochet and i LOVED it!! i definitely had a learning curve with some of the stitches but it was so fun and i wear it all the time!!
When crocheting in the round, you still need to turn your work, that’ll help the seam stay straight-ish
I love the pillow! I think you forgot the pattern for that one? Would love to know!
37:38 noo I soo agree. The patterns out there are so not beginner proof😅
Hi, I’m new here. Breathing yarn spoke about you. I’m a crocheter and knitter imo you can get it better from a lot of sources. I’ll now learn to sew for me because I habe long arms and long legs and all things are to short on me 😢. I will peruse your channel!
You did amazing 🎉🎉
I wrote to soon! Superwash merino and bamboo is equal to learn sewing with silk 😂
The green sweater is knitted
Bravo for redoing something to your like!
I'm a beginner. All I've done is a few granny squares, but I don't think I like crocheting😹😅 it's so confusing
I used this video making my airpods max covers th-cam.com/video/O4eQaRjBGOQ/w-d-xo.htmlfeature=shared, at the time I couldn’t find any other instructions on it
(If you want it to look like the pinterest picture, you could jist make a granny square in the middle and then work your way around it - experiment with it a bit)
But there are way more videos rn from what I’ve seen just looking it up, so maybe you can find something you like
I think since you are a visual learner, maybe it’s better to find in depth video tutorials instead of a patterns? Maybe you talked about why you want to use patterns instead but I don’t recall you saing that
Anyways, everything you made is super cute🩷I know unraveling projects is super frustrating, but it’s always gonna be part of the process i fear, I probably unraveld more things than I have actually finished😁
