    Great idea Tony for variable shutter button but even simpler would be a firmware update for all existing cameras so you could customise your shutter button when using back button autofocus so that the half press gives you single shot or low 3-5 fps and full press gives you maximum frame rate.

    So often I don't realize that I am missing a feature, and then you propose it, and now my camera feels limited without it! I love the idea of the variable frame-rate shutter. I would upgrade for that. I'm still waiting for Sony to incorporate their Android phone tech into my next camera (as you've pushed for), rather than the tech trickling towards the phone division. Keep thinking of new ideas and pushing for them! Thanks as always for the videos!

    Curious if the haptic feedback will cause shake and end up softening some shots. It would be a case-by-case basis and I'm sure there is a way to turn it off, for example on a tripod. Handheld there should be enough dampening from the flesh grip. Interesting.

    • @nomadben
      @nomadben ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I would assume that the haptic feedback would be triggered just before or just after the shutter cycle so as not to shake the camera during the exposure. But it is a good question.

  • @edwardamo

    I love your shutter button throttle idea, and the great thing is it wouldn't even require any new hardware. All cameras already use a shutter button that differentiates between a half-press and a full-press, for those who don't use BBF, so all the manufacturers would have to do is give us a software update that lets us configure the half-press just like we can typically configure the other buttons. Then we could configure the half-press to take a single shot (or use a low-speed continuous setting), while leaving the full-press to do high-speed continuous. Easy-peasy! Why haven't any of them already done this???

    A haptic shutter button seems like an awful idea. What photographer wants to add shake to their camera just as they press the shutter button? This seems like a crazy.

    Tactility doesn't require active mechanisms to provide feedback. I just want a good shutter button with a tactile bump (or a few stages of tactile bump as pressed deeper down). Linear shutter buttons should be dead.

  • @DavidHarrisGRI
    @DavidHarrisGRI ปีที่แล้ว +8

    I would be concerned that the haptic feedback would be for an electronic button which may be unreliable in damp conditions or with wet hands or gloves. As long as it is a real mechanical button then I like the idea.

    • @TonyAndChelsea
      @TonyAndChelsea  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, their patent shows a real mechanical button, probably because they need it to be two-stage to separately activate autofocus. However, a flat button like on the old iPhone's would allow it to be totally waterproof.

    • @barneylaurance1865
      @barneylaurance1865 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If it was a capacitive sensor I agree that could be unreliable. But it could also be a MEMS (microelectromechanical systems) force sensor. That should still be reliable in damp conditions and with gloves - it would measure force but the button would have almost zero travel.

    The new cameras should be head-mounted, have a 360-degree lens and record 16k video at 1200 frames per second, so that the photographer does not have to worry about composition and focus, but can choose a composition in post-processing that it also likes to extract 132 megapixel stills from 16k videos.

    I would love a 3 or 4 position ring around the shutter button, 1st position single shot , 2nd position 3 shot, 3rd position slower unlimited burst, 4th position highest or variable high speed burst. I think that would be intuitive. Also allow 2nd position to be set up as bracketed for exposure (-), (=), (+) for HDR shooting or focus/dof stacking.

    haptic feedback in lieu of a beep is a great idea. the idea of a analog shutter throttle is also a good idea, but i don't think it's doable on the shutter button - maybe low and high stages, but not variable. on canons, can you make the lens control ring adjust the shutter speed? remember the annoying slider on the canon R? slap one on a long zoom where your off-hand thumb could actuate it - that could be a solution.

    I usually back button focus so even just touch to meter, half press low frame rate, full press high frame rate as a camera option would be good enough. Touch to meter was a thing… now you could make the button capacitive sense but my old 80s minolta had metal contacts that sensed when you connected them with your skin to do that and was a single press button for simplicity.

    The Sony Star Sphere satellite isn't launching until the spring. The signup is for s pre-registration. It's probably on a rideshare with a bunch of other cubesats, so the exact launch date will be hard to pin down.
    I'm surprised they are able to do it. I worked on a cubesat project and there are very strict regulations in the US for satellites that do any kind of imaging. You need to register for a license with NOAA and specify what focal lengths and angles you will be capable of shooting. They are less concerned with you photographing the Earth and more concerned with you capturing other things orbiting the Earth, which may have classified orbits. Even though this is in partnership with JAXA, expect some restrictions on when and where you can shoot.

    Unfortunately at the moment, the cost of propellant to maneuver a satellite for creativity just isn’t there yet. However, I would imagine that SpaceX will start a new industry refurbishing and refueling them on demand. In other words, a orbiting gas station and repair shop for satellites including the Hubble Space Telescope.

    Maybe a rocker switch could work for a variable shutter release. Press it down to mid position for 1-3 FPS and all the way down to max out. Regarding Panasonic, I can see them challenging Sony with their version of an A7(S) Mark 3 but the full-frame market is already very crowded. I shoot the G9 for wildlife and love the light-weight and portability and would hate to see Lumix give up this very interesting niche. I would gladly pay two-grand for a G9 with phase detect autofocus. It's one of the most comfortable cameras I've ever held.

    The haptic shutter button will be a boon to future camera bodies that don't have a physical shutter button, removing the physical button will in a small localized area improve that location for waterproofness. My concern is how much of a battery drain will it be? I know it won't be massive, but camera batteries don't last that long as it is and do we need something else to drain the battery?

  • @kaminobatto
    @kaminobatto ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Hmmm... Wouldn't haptic feedback impact IBIS performance? Or would they do the haptic feedback just before the actual shutter release? But then what's the use especially if you're in AF-C? With regards to the half shutter press thing, it sounds like a cool and intuitive thing to do, but then it would work probably only if you assign focus to the back button otherwise you'd have interference between the two functionalities if you are acquiring focus and determining the burst speed with a half pressed shutter release.

    • @kyyuhl
      @kyyuhl ปีที่แล้ว

      They could adjust the IBIS to compensate for the predictable haptic motor so this would probably be a non-issue.

    • @kaminobatto
      @kaminobatto ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kyyuhl I thought about it but then how many stops of vibration compensation do they have to add? And how many stops of image stabilization do you need to counter it? Is it even feasible?

    • @kyyuhl
      @kyyuhl ปีที่แล้ว

      @@kaminobatto i don’t think it would be much more than what already exists. those motors aren’t that strong, i can barely feel the one in my iPhone while typing this comment. Unlikely for that force to travel from the shutter button to the sensor that easily. Unless they plan on putting it in across the entire camera body.

    • @kaminobatto

    In regards to the Japan price raises, electronics in general are way more expensive here in Japan compared to the rest of the world. A 400 or 500 usd tv could cost over 1000usd in Japan. For cameras, especially Sony's, they'll a lot of the time even take out English from the system menu and only have Japanese

    I already get a lower number of shots or higher number based on how quickly I tap or feather the shutter button on my R7and my A7iv. I can get for 4-7 shots, 10 to 20, or the full + rate. I'm not sure I would want the shutter button deciding independently what the burst rate was. I just like controlling it with finger pressure and amount of time on the shutter.

    I love the throttle shutter idea, but I'm not getting excited about the haptic feedback. It's bad enough having to cope with shutter shock on mirrorless in the 1/100 range (usually suggested solution - a not very good one: use electronic shutter and therefore introduce rolling shutter on slow shutter pan shots such as passing trains or other vehicles) without introducing another potential vibration problem.

  • @JohnDrummondPhoto
    @JohnDrummondPhoto ปีที่แล้ว

    When I shoot my R5 electronically, I can very slightly feel a vibration from the body. I don't know if that's truly haptic feedback or if it's the sensor's IBIS invoking. I haven't done it without the IBIS on.

    If cameras are getting motorized physical controls, I want motorized knobs, rings and dials. My stereo amplifier has a motorized volume knob, that turns when the the volume is adjusted by remote control. The physical device should not have rotational symmetry, and the camera firmware should be able to set it to a particular position, not just turn it clockwise or anticlockwise.
    Could be the same for focus rings, exposure compensation dials, maybe dials customizable use on for shutter speed, aperture, anything else. Could be on toggle switches too.
    Would allow the best of both worlds between automatic & by-wire control, and physical control. You'd be able to tell the current state of a setting just by feeling the control, and move it to wherever you want it.

    Not all satellites fly around the earth. A lot of them are in what’s called geosynchronous orbit. They are placed at a certain distance from earth where they orbit at the same speed as the earths rotation. That’s how satellite internet and tv work to provide a constant signal. My guess as to how those companies take photos is probably with certain satellites within their allocated geosynchronous space (measured with degrees °) It would make more sense that they’re just waiting in line for other customers photos to be taken and transmitted to earth.

    Panasonic didn't confirm they will be adding PDAF to their MFT cameras, they said they "will consider installing PDAF depending on the characteristics of the model" so it seems that some cameras might get it and others may not. I also don't think they will completely move to Full Frame only and abandon MFT and still will focus on both with Full Frame taking the front seat. MFT is still better for rolling shutter, higher FPS, smaller lenses, especially for wildlife with smaller lenses like the Panasonic 100-400mm and the 2x crop benefit for that. There isn't a full frame equivalent 200-800mm lens and if there was it would be large and expensive compared to the Panasonic lens.
    I have read quite a few of comments from people who still want a smaller MFT body camera like an updated Panasonic GX8/GX9 and there are people still wanting a G9II so the market is still there even if it might seem to be a bit more niche these days.

    Japanese have learnt from Italians (I'm kidding obviously). Japanese are still printing their own currency so they can purposely devalue their currency to help exports. It's a small price to pay (in Japan) to keep exports flying out of the country at the speed of light. This technique was often used when Italy used to print its own currency - not anymore, sadly. When we did though, we experienced an economic boom!

But lets face it, when do the camera companies ever really give us what we want. Surely all mid to top end cameras should have an LCD screen at least as good as our phones? They should all have internal storage? Be able to transfer images as quickly as our phones? Waterproof? Oh and detect and delete blurred images? Turn into a 4x4 .............................too much?

    Haptic feedback button? Great …
    something to create vibration. 🤦🏻‍♂️
    something else to fail. Complexity is a liability.
    SKYFI looks awkward, yet very useful to cartographers.
    The problem is that constant satellite readjustments require stressing flywheels to torque the sats into specific orientations. The motors moving the flywheels and independent camera fine adjustments are heavily used and likely require some sort of reduction in lifetimes or super costly maintenance.
    They also must be in low Earth orbit, making them vulnerable to thermal expansions of the atmosphere as the solar cycle approaches its periodic maximum.

    So Nikon will establish a re-sellers "grey market" for new cameras in Japan. What next, waiting list? Preferred customers that need to have a buying history? (think luxury watches).

      It has been used for decades - the very reason Digital sensors CCD came about in the first place . I have NO idea as to why tony would - after decades of Space Staion use - suddenly makes such a claim ?? .

    It’s all about the economy and the need. Is a camera your working tool for your business or are we talking about photography a hobby? World economies are seeing inflation because of the U.S. Dollar falling in value. Japan had to increase camera prices because they own much of the U.S. Debt. Camera companies have kept U.S. prices level cutting profits with the effect of moving merchandise. However, this will slowdown as the recession worsens into 2023.

    Please convey to canon and other camera producers too: I want them to change the location of the battery pack, or change the location of the, er what do you call it, the door to the battery housing, which is usually at the bottom, to one corner. Reason for the need of the critical change: when I'm happily shooting away at my subjects, then oh oh my battery is gone, I need to take it out and replace it with my backup battery, but oh oh, in order to do so, I need to first unmount my camera from the tripod, but oh oh, if I do so I'd be disturbing where and how I set the location and angle of my camera, and I want it to be static at the same spot and angle throughout the shoot 🤔

      Um - so simply use a thing called a - Battery Grip . Then you can go from 1 battery to 3 batteries in many cameras . Pretty simple , and the very reason they were invented in the first place . ...
