Wow, sis--there is so much inspiration wrapped up in this video! ❤️ I had to pause the video to look up that scripture, which is found in the book of Habakkuk 2:2-3 (KJV) 2 And the Lord answered me, and said, Write the vision, and make it plain upon tables, that he may run that readeth it. 3 For the vision is yet for an APPOINTED TIME, but at the end it shall SPEAK, and not lie: though it tarry, WAIT FOR IT; because IT WILL SURELY COME, it will NOT tarry. U guy's are awesome & are most definitely my inspiration to not give up, go at my pace but not procrastinate) Do it dept free, is my plan also. I'm sitting here folding laundry cheesing because I'm so proud, & happy for u both. Girl y'all don't need gym memberships the way y'all be working your homestead. Blessings on top of blessings to y'all!
So Inspiring! And the blueprint you mapped out is exactly how your barndominium looks :) Thank you for sharing! me personally, if gives me much hope and inspiration!
I love the content in how you started. I bought property in Paradise. I'll be putting a manufactured home. Gods will be done 2025. I love that you do all things in Jesus, amen 🙏
Appreciate you including the prices for all these different things. Really interesting to have an idea for what stuff like this costs. I think $6500 for the septic was a very fair price. I still think if you all ever decide to get the water tanks from the same contractor, it was a fair price too (he might have to charge a bit more since time has passed and materials probably got a little more expensive). You could install gutters and downspouts that fill those big giant water tanks Guthrie would install and it would help reduce or eliminate your need to haul water. Since I know the size of your metal building now (30' x 60'), I can give you a pretty accurate estimate of how much water you can harvest off of that roof when it rains. The rule of thumb is that for every 1000 sq feet of roof, you can harvest about 625 gallons of rain from a 1 inch rain event. Your building is 1800 square feet (the roof will match that), so in a one inch rain even, you can likely harvest 1800 x .625 = 1125 gallons of water. Your area tends to get around 7 to 8 inches of rain a year (with most of it coming during the winter and the summer monsoons). During some of those summer monsoons, I do not exaggerate, sometimes 2-3 inches of rain will fall in just a few hours. Those kinds of storms can be massive and can cause flash flooding/etc. The reason I share this is to stress that it's best to size your tanks and gutters to handle a bigger event like that and always make sure you have enough space in the tanks to accomodate new rain (especially as you head into the monsoon season or just after a big monsoon rain). I can't remember now, but I think Don Guthrie quoted you around $7500 for two 7500 gallon tanks. That is a fair price and if you ran gutters along each side of your barn's roof, and each gutter emptied into a downspout that drained into one of those two tanks, you would be set able to harvest 7000 to 8000 gallons of water a year just from rain. I know what you pay at the fill stations isn't much, but just account for the fuel and wear and tear on your vehicle hauling the water, and also your time going back and forth. I'm not trying to say that 8,000 gallons would be enough for the entire year either (it would only fill big tanks like halfway). But if you have those big tanks in place, you're able to capture and use that rainwater for all kinds of purposes: -Entirely unfiltered, you can just use straight from the tank it to water your trees, garden, animals, even some washing like spraying dust off of your vehicle, mopping floors, etc... -With minimal filtration (just a broad sediment filter to protect your water pump), you can use the rainwater to flush your toilet, do laundry, even wash dishes as long as you're sure to let the dishes dry 100% before using them. Oh, and you can use it to shower as long as you're not swallowing mouthfuls of water while you shower. -With full filtration, you can use the rainwater to cook and drink, brush teeth, etc. There are ways to build inexpensive but effective/safe compositing toilets too that would save you an enormous amount of water (a ton of water is wasted just flushing toilets, but if you have a little toilet/outhouse kind of area near your house, you can use those facilities to decrease your water use and ultimately, that stuff can be composted and spread on trees/etc. It might sound crazy, but there are approved plans for the state of Arizona and you there are several youtubers who are already using those kinds of systems. Also, with a bit of adjustment to your pipes (or maybe when you install everything), you can set up your drains to where your toilet and kitchen sink/dishwasher empty to your septic system, but your bathroom sink, shower, and washing machine can be diverted to different pipes that will water your trees instead. In the dry months when there is no rain, being able to divert some of your "safe" gray water into basins where you have plants growing is an excellent way to get multiple uses out of water. It will make your septic system last a lot longer too and need far less service/pumping/cleaning.
P.S. Once you have big tanks like that installed, another benefit is that you can have a local water company come with a big truck that will fill your tanks. I think it's not too expensive per gallon, but there is normally a service fee for the truck to even come, so while it's not super cheap, I think it would a lot easier than having to haul water a few hundred gallons at a time in your IBC tote. I'd be curious to know what water delivery costs in that area. If you ever talk with Don Guthrie again, he would likely know.
Thank you for the detailed feedback and tips! We appreciate your insights and knowledge! Yes,we are still planning on going with him for our water system!🙂
