My dad came here when he was 14 from El Salvador with nothing. He slept on used mattresses in the alley and was screwed over many times because he was illegal, now my dad is a US citizen and is owner of a company, has 5 cars, and and 4 houses. So proud of him, he’s such a hard worker and has always provided for us.❤️😢

My grandparents came from Mexico in the 40s and they were fortunate enough to be able to come here legally. My grandparents open a shutter business and did many sets on Hollywood lots. They made the decision to only hire undocumented workers and my grandmother would spend her days getting their paperwork done so they could become citizens. I feel like there’s a special place in heaven for her.

This is beautiful it made me tear up since my family is from El Salvador also. And my parents left during the civil war also. When I tell ppl my story they can’t imagine the struggle my parents went through. I am a first generation immigrant and i am proud. Ily curly !
I feel you! My Papi, two tios, and my abuelos all left during the Civil War because my abuelo was a teacher, and they were targeting them first. They tried leaving illegally twice, but they got caught and were deported both times. Eventually, in 1979/1980, they managed to come here legally and moved to New York, along with all my tias and tios, and my bisabuela, too

My dad left El Salvador when he was 17 during the war and went to Los Angeles! From time to time he tells me the horrors he saw from the war and his story of how he crossed the border.
My dad also left during the civil war, he was only ten. He also tells me the horrors of war
Same he left to the USA in 1990. He was in college and did not want to fight in the war bc of the corruption. He opened up to me during the pandemic, I had no idea I got emotional and started crying. He gave up his life and his career to flee the violence of the country. An immigrants story is full of sorrow, appreciate and love your immigrant parents always.❤️

My dad and I were talking about this the other day and he was like mija no crees que no extraño también mi familia en Guatemala ? Mis padres se están asiendo viejos y también mis hermanos y hermanas .Deje todo lo que conocía para venir para acá y solo era para unos años y ahora tengo 22 años aquí . Y si fuera yo , desde cuando me iría peté te tengo a ti y a tu hermana y quiero que tengan la mejor educación. I swear I am so proud of everyone who crossed the border to survive and make a life here even if they don’t want us , it shows how strong they are and how strong we should be too ❤️

My family's Guatemalan too. They say their plan was to only be here some years, save up some money and go back. The majority stayed for the same reasons as your dad. I'm so grateful for their hard work and sacrifice. Those who hate on immigrates have no idea what they have gone through. ❤️🇬🇹

My family is from Poland my grandfather fought and him and his sister juacinta who is a nun and was exiled to Siberia came to America it’s a long story but he’s now 89 years old married my grandmother for like 46 years and still going strong even though my grandmother is Hungarian and had Alzheimer’s every immigrant has a long amazing story

My father had to leave El Salvador in a similar way. Hearing that story again, but from another person with the same experience and seing that story - my family‘s story represented on such a big platform fills me with so much pride!

My mom and her family are from El Salvador as well, it took her about three months to come to US when she was only eight hears old. She doesn’t remember much but she’s grown up for most of her life in California & when she was younger she became a citizen. People don’t understand how much courage it takes to just leave the place you call home. Both of my parents are immigrants and they haven’t visited their countries since they left more than 20 years ago. I’m so thankful for my mom and everything she did, Abuelita Gladys’s story is similar to my families and so many more. Immigrants are what make this country, I truly hope this hatred will end before I die. No one deserves this🇸🇻 #savetps
My grandma's parents fled Czechoslovakia during the start of WWII as they were Jewish (so obviously wanted to get out of there!). They took a boat to Ecuador and my grandma was born there and they stayed for a few years. They then acquired visas somehow and got into America. That's about all I know, but I think it is pretty badass!

Lizzie W Back in the day some countries in South America where able come to the US without a visa, and were granted tourist cards at the moment of entry.
Actually, you know what?! Many countries in Latin America took refugies during WWII. My family is from Cuba and we know for sure that in those time they had lots of refugies, especially Jewish. So many that the Cuban government together with the american issued a special permit which allowed them to live for a year in Cuba and then were transferred to America. Many stayed and settled as business owners becoming also Judaism and important religion after Catholicism

My dad came over during the war fleeing the Salvadorian government. He was a 20 year old college kid who had to make the decision to either die or leave his country. He got papers pretty fast and then brought my mom over. During the war my dad had to keep fleeing because the government wanted to kill him due to his involvement with fmln. My mother had her father killed by the government soldiers because they thought he was a communist. They weren't poor illiterate people, they simply came over to feel safe.
My family is from El Salvador as well, my grandparents and their two kids at the time (my mother and oldest uncle) left to live in Bakersfield, CA. They also left because of the civil war. Me personally haven't went to El Salvador yet but I also heard its beautiful so I hope one day I get to go there.
My dad is from Belize, Central America and he is undocumented. I dread the thought of him being taking from me. I've mention to him for year's to go get his papers and he fears that if he go attempt to get his papers they'll deport him on spot. The thought alone makes me want to break down in tears.
Why didn't your Dad do his paperwork before? Sorry but the law is the law.

My family fled from the war in El Salvador when my mother was 12, and I love to hear the stories my grandparents, tias and tíos would tell me about El Salvador, but they not only told me about the good but the bad and the loses that had happened to our family and their struggle.

My parents fled mainland China shortly after the Cultural Revolution. It was a traumatic time and they don't talk about it too much. They crossed into Hong Kong by hiking through mountains to evade the authorities until they reached the shore, then swam through tides until they reached the other side. I heard the story when I was a child and I always romanticized it as some kind of adventure. Don't get me wrong, it was badass, but I've only now begun to appreciate what a dangerous and desperation-driven trip it was. They wouldn't have been able to get a visa to the US from the mainland. And it may have been one of the most physically-demanding points of their migration experience, but reaching the US and being an immigrant here isn't sunshine and miracles, it comes with its own process.
"Borders are set up to define the places that are safe and unsafe, to distinguish us from them. A border is a dividing line, a narrow strip along a steep edge. *A borderland is a vague and undetermined place created by the emotional residue of an unnatural boundary.* It is in a constant state of transition. The prohibited and forbidden are its inhabitants." - Gloria Anzaldúa ❤️
P.S. If anyone is interested in more immigration stories, Credible Fear by PBS is a great documentary that tells the stories of people who try to enter the States though the asylum process because they fear persecution in their country of origin. Even pre-9/11, it's a long and bureaucratic process wherein they have to prove they are in clear danger, and the agent looking at their case on that particular day can still deny them. It's their job to look for very specific language to make that determination, but there are unaccompanied toddlers who have trouble expressing themselves well even in their home languages to try to present any kind of case for credible fear, and it's impossible for interpreters to translate their interviews 100%. Everyone, including the immigration officials, agreed the system is inevitably subjective and flawed for something that has huge consequences for people's livelihoods and society at large.
I’m Salvadoran! And this just warms my heart bc it reminds me of my parents. They crossed over to the US in the late 70s, hearing my parents story totally changed me, it also made me grateful to have them

My mom (shes Mexican) came to the US (illegally obvs) when she was 16 with a baby that was only a few months old! She took my brother with her ppl! She cross the freaking border with a baby! My dad (he's from Guatemala) did the same thing. They met in the US and after struggling for a while they became citizens in 2012. So proud of them

I remember when I was six years old I came home from school I entered my house and my mother was very happy she tu rned to me and my sister and I still remember those words. " ustedes van al estados unidos" it tokk a few Months, an few shots when finally my dad came from the us to get me and my sister, it was February when I got to America and boy did that freezing temperature hit me like a tree. 6 years I've lived in America. I miss my family and El Salvador.

My mom is Puerto Rican- Dominican, but she came to Utah from Puerto Rico, so she had no problem, my dad came here with a student visa to learn English, then he returned to mexico and came back with a work visa, he married my mom , and my dad for a little bit was technically illegal, but he used some fake papers for a while, but then he became a resident and then a citizen

Thanks to the Bracero program in the 50s-60s, my Abuelito Ignacio moved to the States and eventually mi mama, tios, tias, and Abuelita Maria moved to the states after mi Abuelito sent a lot of money over many years to mi familia. Now mi mama has a family with mi papa, my brothers Maynard and David, and myself. You reap what you sew in life, and if it wasnt for mi Abuelito, I wouldnt be here. Te quiero mucho Abuelito Ignacio y mi Abuelita Maria❤🇺🇸🇲🇽

So thankful for those that were brave enough to make it to America with all those beautiful Latin cultures and traditions. Loved this video.
First od all curly you look amazong. I woild.like to say your grandmother is amazing. My parent are drom El salvador as well. It was hard but they came over and prosperend and now we jave better opportunities.
Seriously testing up while watching this! Such a beautiful video. It reminds me of my grandparents' immigration story from Cuba. They fought in Cuba's revolution and ended up on the run. My abuela gave birth to my uncle and then they had to leave the country about 10 hours later. If they're done then they say they took a raft to Mexico and then went to America legally, but if they're drink then they say they took a raft to Florida and claimed political refugee status in order to stay. My abuela left behind 2 kids with her ex husband and my grandparents picked fruit until they got on their feet and more family came to the United States. My abuela always said that every struggle and moment of fear while coming to America was worth it because she wanted her family to have a better life and more opportunities. She missed Cuba dearly.

Fatima Usman TPS means Temporary Protected Status. El Salcador had a terrible earthquake hit them in 2001, so El Salvadorans could come here to stay only for like 6 months to 2 years legally. But, Bush and Obama kept extending it with different reasons like for example gang violence. Now Trump is giving El Salavadorans until September 2019 to get their stuff sorted to go back to El Salavador. He said that it was supposed to be temporary and 17 years is not temporary. He is going to do that with the Haitians and other groups with TPS who have been here very long. But many of these people have had children born here in the years they have stayed. I wish they could give the adults who have been here many years an opportunity to get Residency. But with Trump in office, I don't think it will happen :(

Every time i hear someones immigration story it makes me think and then i get emotional cause my aunt told me when she was crossing the desert going to the U.S with her husband hand they almost got caught twice and could have been shot and killed and at that time she was 1-2 weeks pregnant with my cousin and she didn't know she was pregnant until they got here and they were suprised she didn't die cause they didn't have enough food to go around and had to rasin 2 gallons of water in hope that they would make it quickly.
so humbling and heartwarming to hear your abuelita’s story. her and tia alicia are such strong women, i couldn’t even begin to imagine the extent of bravery and perseverance you’ve got to hold in order to do all of this and live again in another country, starting back from scratch. thank you for sharing this story 💛
