  • Paul Koslo shares behind-the-scenes stories of co-starring with John Wayne in ROOSTER COGBURN and with Clint Eastwood and Robert Duvall in JOE KIDD. In COGBURN, Koslo was part of the outlaw gang with Richard Jordan and Anthony Zerbe. In a nice revelation, Koslo says that Duke turned him into a true believer. "I never liked John Wayne as an actor," the versatile actor remembers in this exclusive interview. It wasn't until working together in Duke's reprisal of his Oscar-winning TRUE GRIT role that Koslo saw Wayne give a surprising performance that changed his mind about the beloved icon.
Filmed in Lone Pine and Old Tucson, JOE KIDD featured Koslo and an array of solid character actors and stuntmen supporting Clint. What could be "off color" during the making of Clint Eastwood's JOE KIDD for director John Sturges? When the Big Wind blows in the High Desert with Robert Duvall, something's bound to happen! Paul remembers and tells all.
One of the busiest character actors of the 1970's, Koslo (June 27, 1944-Jan 9, 2019) was a co-founder (with James Gammon and Timothy Scott) of the acclaimed Los Angeles M.E.T. Theater. Among Paul's early roles was the cult classic, THE OMEGA MAN, with then SAG President Charlton Heston who helped get Paul and William Smith some well earned back pay on the biker flick, THE LOSERS.
Paul joined producer/host Rob Word for this full, fun conversation, May 18, 2016, at The Autry

Interesting interview, Rob. I am a fan of Robert Duvall, Charleton Heston, and John Wayne, of course, not only of their acting, but also their politics. A lot of actors today want to complain about the politics of Charleton Heston and Ronald Reagan, but as Clint Eastwood said, maybe they should give up the better salaries and residuals that those two won for actors as presidents of the Screen Actors Guild; with that Clint made the actors shut up above expelling President Reagan from SAG.

Rooster Cogburn was a fantastic movie. As Rob said, John Wayne and Katharine Hepburn had a chemistry very reminiscent of Humphrey Bogart and Hepburn's great chemistry in The African Queen (1951), all while Duke channels that great Rooster character he did fantastically in True Grit.
John Wayne is an absolute legend. Katherine Hepburn is without a doubt my favorite actress ever.
Thanks so much for the Paul Koslo interview, Rob!

He was always cast as the bad guy and he played his part so well that you did end up not liking him. In real life he really seemed like a great guy. I’m glad you got to put that one to rest. Fun anecdotes from Paul. Joe Kidd is one of my Eastwood western favorites, in large part because of that great supporting cast that included Paul, Robert Duvall, John Saxon, (Ulzana) Juaquin Martinez and Don Stroud (another guy with great stories presented here).
Glad Paul came around to appreciating Duke's acting, which I think is still underrated. And Heston, who I always felt if his career had taken a path more in the direction of westerns instead of those toga and sandal things he became more or less locked into, could have been near as big a genre icon as Wayne or Gary Cooper.
Proved it with The Big Country and the much later Will Penny.

    • @hiramnoone
      @hiramnoone ปีที่แล้ว

Heston btw was one of many who turned down the Gary Cooper role in High Noon. As did Gregory Peck who later said it was the biggest mistake of his career.
Hard to believe today, but Cooper at the time in the midst of a career lull was way down the list of choices.
Lucky break for him, we fans and motion picture history he got it.

Paul was one of those great ‘bad guy’ character actors who face you would always recognize but whose name you never knew. I would love to have heard about his father’s transition from Hitler’s army to moving his family to Canada after the war. We had similar neighbors down the street when I was growing up in Midland, Texas. The dad was an officer in Hitler’s army and relocated to Texas after the war. They had three Volkswagens and I had a crush on the youngest daughter. 😄 Paul must have died not too long after this interview. I’m so glad you were able to get interviews with many of these fine character actors before they passed. Thank you!

Always a highly enjoyable character actor, who was also a part of the huge cast of HEAVEN'S GATE, playing the Mayor. Paul eventually worked with Paul Newman on THE DROWNING POOL, did a few films with Charles Bronson, and besides a tremendous amount of television work did movies like VOYAGE OF THE DAMNED, FREEBIE AND THE BEAN, THE LAUGHING POLICEMAN, and LOLLY-MADONNA XXX. I still haven't seen his movie THE BOOTLEGGERS (1974, co-starring Slim Pickens, Dennis Fimple, and Jaclyn Smith before she did CHARLIE'S ANGELS) but THE LOSERS is a lot of high-energy fun and features a battle scene where motorcycles are fitted with rocket launchers.

ROOSTER COGBURN the westernized version of THE AFRICAN QUEEN, was never going to be as good as TRUE GRIT, but it was entertaining... and so is character actor PAUL KOSLO...
Koslo, was at its best and most goofiest during the 1970s as in MR. MAJESTIK with Charles Bronson.
The stories you get to here and the guests Rob finds for us, they're always fascinating that when you re-watch the movies they mention with that insider knowledge, it just adds so much to everyone who has never been on a film/TV production set.
