I cover the shaft with a plastic bag ( to prevent the clip to fly off) then, to re-install, I use a socket and push on it by hand. Perfect comes with practice. Your method works fine too.
The best way to put on those clips is to have someone else do it. I hate those little buggers. But you did a great job with the gear replacement. Thanks for the video and the education.
Good to see another video Bob. Those little c clips can be a pain to deal with I have lost more than one in my time. LOL Hope everyone in the family is doing well. Wishing you and the family a healthy and prosperous 2020 Buddy!!!
Good video. Now to see if my starter motor gear needs replacing, and if I can do it without the special tool. I'm sick of pull starting my snow blower every snowfall.
wow thanks bob ... now if you only come fix my snowblower it would be great .. still surges and a new carb just like the old carb .. have a good weekend .. †
Im going to a starter shop in Regina tomorrow, get them to sell me or order me a new bendix gear. My gear teeth tore off because the starter was juuust a weee bit loose on those two TOPSIDE hold down screws. Ill putter together with locktite. I'll rub anti sieze on the axles whiles im in the area as well. Thank you for this tutorial.
Those motors are way under $100 on Amazon. Ya ya...I know ya get what ya pay for. BUT if you don't burn em out by holding down the start button they'll last. Thanks, pretty good video.

the chisel worked way better than a screw driver. i also used a flap visegrip to get the ring back on. worked great! thanks for the video!

Best part of being a mechanic is making it happen with out special tools
Every thing is possible
If you listen carefully, you can get the clip land on the floor. Love those vids man!
The ring faces away from the spring such that the opening/lip faces the end of the shaft. When released, it covers the retaining ring.
I noticed that too. The lip on the ring acts as a retainer for the clip, so it can’t spread open and come off the end of the shaft.

Nice fix, I said a lot bad words trying to replace those rings. Thanks for the video's.
Nice fix Bob tricky job well done.
Great video! keep them coming
Thanks for the tip sir. Be safe. Peace.🇺🇸
I found putting duct tape during removal and installation of clip on starter helpful. It keeps the clip from flying off and unable to find.
Oh the old c clip.. the vain of my life lol great video bob.. hope all is well mate
Those rings are a PITA!!
Do you have pliers to replace avil rings on impack tools
Works great

Govener issue, causing the surging? What did you end up doing?
Would it fall within reason to change out the C-ring for a snap ring instead to make future fixed easier?
Nice job

At the end of vid the top ring slides up over the C-clip to capture it on the shaft
yes, I noticed it when I edited. I'm on it. Thanks
You put the ring that sits on top of the spring upside down.
The ring is upside down .
