I have learned since the recording of this video that RGT85 is currently in hospital due to a heart issue :( - Be sure to check out his original upload, wish him good health and subscribe to his channel to help him reach 500k subs this year x - th-cam.com/video/uZN5ct_UJQo/w-d-xo.html&t
I had to get away from original hardware due to increasing prices mostly, but honestly it shouldn't matter how you play the games, just have fun. Personally, I've gone the mini console route for the most part, I really enjoy the Sega and Nintendo classic minis especially.
Hi there, as for me sometimes I use original hardware, some other times I use modded hardware, emulation or my trustworthy, jailbroken nes mini, as long as I can play the games I love, feel nostalgic about or want to share with my loved ones I don't really care about how I play. I watch videogame content to share with others and listen about their gaming related stories. Happy gaming everyone
I play my retrogames from time to time and it makes me feel good. In my opinion, everybody can enjoy it despite the age. If people played games more often, the world would be a better place!
I think people can enjoy the old games whatever way works for them. I've sent my digital copies to friends with emulators. They don't have the systems like I do but like the simplicity of the old games and enjoy them. I like having the collection of old systems too. They can be a conversation piece in themselves. I also think the new compact 20k game systems that just plug into your TV are great for those that don't want a room full of old consoles. If I didn't have what I do I'd buy one of those. There's no shame in it.
@@a3970010 I absolutely agree with you. These gamers think that an "actual" gamer must have all consoles in an original state with original game cartridges, CDs, etc. and exact gamepads or joysticks. They also think that the original tv or computer screen must be used in order for you to be an "actual" gamer. Bullcrap. Bullcrap. Bullcrap. Bullcrap. They also assume none of us had the "original" pieces...as though it matters. Who cares.... They also assume you can't be an "actual" gamer unless you know the sku# right down to every number, know every single person involved in making the product, know the type of glue used to put the sticker on a cartridge, and know the chemical compound of the materials of everything that makes up the cartridge, cd, game case, booklet etc. I mean these folks have such bizarre expectations about who a gamer is...they are totally lost in their own minds?!? Honestly. The products are on a shelf...and guess what....ANYBODY CAN BUY THEM AND ANYBODY CAN USE THEM WITH THE LITTLE OR NO KNOWLEDGE OF THE PRODUCT. Any product.

I am in my early 60's and I didn't have these consoles growing up. We couldn't afford it. I have learnt so much of what I know about retrogaming from channels like yours. I am happy that I recently gave one of my retrogaming handhelds to my daughter's friend and he is using it. Sadly, it seems like whatever interest I follow, I see gatekeepers saying, "you can't do that!" or "that's wrong". I don't care about me, I'm way past that. It's the people without decades of thick skin that suffer.
I’m confused because they didnt exist while you were growing up. I guess the original Atari came out when you were probably 17 or older. Sorry just confused by what you mean and wondering if it was a typo or something?
@@MoviesGamesMusic Our first games console was a 10 in 1 pong clone (circa 1976, the year I turned 15). I also played on the apple II+ (circa 77), the Exidy Sorcerer (Circa 79), the Texas Instruments Ti99a (Circa 1980). The point I was trying to make was that, over the years, I have been involved in many different activities (amateur radio, amateur theatre, car rallying etc...) and in every group there were gatekeepers who would challenge newcomers with "That's wrong", You can't do that" and I watched them drive people away. They were the old timers who felt they had the one true way to do things. Things changed over time, but slowly. Where was the typo?
Very well said! I have no time for gatekeepers. I play retro games on new gear and old gear and my sons join in too - more power to those who just want to have fun!
Seeing 20 to 30-somethings playing and reviewing games that I enjoyed as a child warms my heart. When I played NES or SNES games, or other systems of that generation, that technology was state-of-the-art. Today, with so many superior options, younger players can review these games more objectively than I ever could have. This rule doesn't apply to games I missed back then. I can judge them quite honestly, though I still appreciate a younger set of eyes.
Right? It's nice to see what someone decades later with all they have available to them thinks about the things I grew up with and love. Getting a new perspective that I could NEVER ever have. If anything it actually makes me kinda jealous of them honestly, I'll never be able to know what it's like to play all these games "new" from a 2020s perspective....
I feel like I'm the opposite of a gatekeeper. If someone of a younger generation is getting interested in something I know a lot about I love gushing out answers to anything they may have questions on and if it's something physical, I tend to give things away to stoke the fire of interest. I'll give them an extra copy of a game or a hard to get a hold of cable or anything else to help them along on this new journey they are on. Part of the fun in gaming for me is seeing other people have fun too. And if they've some nugget of knowledge on the subject I've never heard before it's a bonus for me, not a badge of dishonor lol
Thank you for this video and the reminder to speak up against these bullies. I have long been against generational divides / gate keeping and as I age, I try to listen to younger people and welcome them into my circles and fandoms.
no; shitpost back 🎉 if we brought back bullying we wouldnt have this issue anyone in the wrong needs to be corrected publicly this ends the liberal mind disease
Well said. I think it's a shame as I remember growing up and wanting to share stuff like this. Best time I had recently was having a beer and playing Ninja Turtles at the gaming cafe with a friend. And it's especially sad when someone can't share in a parent sharing their joy with their kids.
Gatekeepers are a blight upon internet discourse among any fandom. Shining a light on them, and making it known that such behaviour is not okay, is important. Thank you for this video.
This isn't Gatekeeping though. The hobby is the same regardless of setup. This is like saying youur D&D group is gate kept because someone demands the use of a sharpie on the character sheets or something.
I just wanted to give you a message of support. My wife and I regularly watch your videos and find them to be interesting and entertaining... and perhaps most importantly, easily accessible. As someone who has lived through the eras of 8 bit, 16 bit, 32 bit and now 64 bit computing and gaming, please be assured that not everyone is like those that you are unfortunately running into online. Yes I even had a ZX Spectrum... two of them over the years in fact! Some of us are actually really happy that our passions can be understood better and shared by others and you are really helping with that. Keep going, your channel is brilliant.
Couldn’t agree more with your video. You speak a lot of sense here and painful truths of this hobby. It’s a hobby for everyone to enjoy regardless of age, gender or knowledge. Love your work.
This was a great video. I've had people give me hell for using mini consoles and emulation because it's not "pure." I grew up playing the original consoles on crt's, I had my fun with it back then. I just want something cheap and easy to hook up, so I can still play games from my youth with my mom. And somehow that's a bad thing? Loved your argument on this, and can't wait to watch more!
Some people seem more obsessed about HOW a game is played rather than IF a game is played. I couldn't care less about what some snob thinks about me for using an emulator rather than trying to get a 30 year old console to work or paying ridiculous prices for games that have been discontinued for decades.
@@fattiger6957 seriously some SCART/CRT people gotta realize these are JUST console games (for the most part). Nobody's restoring a '67 Corvette here with OEM parts, nobody's bulding a fake Ferrari on top of a Pontiac Fiero... it's just a damn game. And if we WERE being picky, why don't I ever see these people complain about original hardware when it comes to games that NEED original hardware? Like Arkanoid/Kaboom needing a paddle/spinner or fighting games needing arcade sticks and button on a controller with a heavy metal base? Shit, keep the energy THERE rather than directing it at people playing Yars Revenge on a D-pad!
@@fattiger6957 my thoughts exactly. Either you need a modded console, an og console with an upscaler, or an aftermarket one, then the games. Which can get stupidly expensive.
Yeah man. My mum threw my C64 in the bin, I gave my mega drive to a charity shop, and handed my playstations on. I'm never going to source and buy all that stuff again. Most of these people spend more time masturbating than they do playing games. They're retro collectors, not retro players. Watching my children playing Bubble Bobble for hours is thanks to a free emulator, and we love it
I appreciate your videos where you air out your experiences. I've been playing games since the NES/Game Boy Era and truly enjoy your content. Keep up the good work!
I am in my 50’s and have an absolute passion for retro gaming. The hardware and the software. I have a small collection of kit and back in the day I would buy quite a few magazines each month relating to different platforms. But this has changed and wonderful people like you and many others bring fantastic content to me every week! I might know a fair bit about a certain platform or computer but you know what? I learn new things because of your channel and other similar channels. I do hope these “nay sayers” are a minority but for me, please keep up the fantastic work and share all that you have with us more open-minded people who really appreciate your time, effort and input into what should be an enjoyable hobby/pastime for everyone!
Have you seen metalJesusRocks, AVGN, triplejump, radical reggie, John Hancock? Just to name a few. JayZ2cents, reviewtechusa. and many others. Check them out. They review retro games and new. the last two are different. Jayz2cents does PC builds reviews, and Reviewtech, does controversy and news some reviews. but the rest are into retro gaming.
I stopped collecting older games during the pandemic. I felt the prices were crazy but also the people in the community got crazy. Very critical, like why not complete in box or the stupid crt tv thing. I recently starting buying older games again and it brought me so much joy. I bought yoshi’s island for snes and i am enjoying it so much. People need to chill out. We need to be encouraging future generations to play older systems so they dont get forgotten. Great video :)
Well said, Lady Decade! I might know quite a bit about retro gaming, but I STILL learn new things from people like you. Thank you for being a shining example of a helpful person in the retro community. Keep doing the great work!
I've given up on collecting old videogame stuff because the price of everything just went way up beyond what I can pay. And if you think the market is awful right now for people living in UK or US, imagine living in other territories were those products were always more scarce even 30 years ago. I already bought most stuff I wanted so I'll keep cherishing those instead of being mad for not being able to buy more stuff that I'll probably won't use anyway.
No cap bro. Keep up the videos. So happy to see you shout out MAH BOI RGT85. You are totally on point tho.. it's just old bullies taking the chance to bully others. So cool to see someone like yourself talk about these topics and I consider it refreshing and interesting !
Gatekeepers, Gamergate, Girls in tabletoprpgs.... the history over and over again just because a few think they could decide what is ok or not. I'm a dude, almost in my 50's so I live throug lot of the "retro" ages, and I can assure people like you are making great for gamer community.. Your videos are awesome and full of info, info that a lot of people apreciate. Don't matter if you are from an age A or a gender B.... There is no place for exlusion or bigotry in any kind of hobby, the only thing that matters is had fun, discuss/talk with everyone and play. I keep a few of my old consoles, and I could use emulators or retro consoles cause the price of some games at 2023 is really skyhigh. And I could appreciate the same a game. Let's hope that that kinda people slowly will dissappear because they are the kinda people that made the world toxic.
Well, for what it is worth, I hope you continue to enjoy retro gaming, even if it's on a modern screen and emulated hard ware. It should be all about having fun and learning about history. ^_^
All i'll say the more the prices go up, The more people will use emulators and get the games for free, The joke in the end, Will be on wata and those like them, I personally love videos covering all these old computers and consoles that i never got to play on or know much about, I grew up from the atari 1600 / zx spectrum 48k + onwards, Where arcades were considered state of the art, I will always love them days of gaming so much, As much as the evolution of gaming and its hardware, Great video Lady Decade 😇❤
Glad I waited until the end to comment because you brought up so many points I was going to echo to you. First, glad to know you enjoyed RGT's video... going by the title I was wondering if you had. I personally LOVE when someone like yourself or Scott the Woz talks about 8-bit games and systems or even Genesis/Megadrive titles. Sometimes I wanna hear the same information (yes, even about Doki Doki Panic) over and over and over again from different people because I not only love the topic but the style of presentation... In your specific cases, your humor and shared love for the topic. When I see well researched posts from "My Life in Gaming" or "Hard4Games" or "The Gaming Historian"... I really got prepare myself to be intent and follow this whole drawn out drama. I subscribe to them but I can't watch videos like that every day! Your channel, Scott, a few of those TripleJump videos are well researched, I learn something, I hear the same points but from different sources (ie, did Atari see Donkey Kong playing on The Adam? Or on ColecoVision? Or was that just rumor and not fact?! Was or wasn't Atari really going to sell Nintendos or did they just want to delay things??)... I can listen all day to different topics.. you're all entertaining! Lastly, I said this on RGT's video: imagine you playing a Beatles CD or Spotify list for your kids and some random oldhead telling you they should be listening to the Mono recordings on original vinyl or over an AM radio! Utterly ridiculous.
Great video! People get too caught up in a hobby as their identity. As long as you keep in perspective that it is a thing you do and NOT who you are, it doesn't get weird
The content on my channel is more general as well. I know that there are people out there that know all there is to know about consoles and rare and obscure games. But there are people that don't know and enjoy learning about these things. And that makes me happy. Keep bringing us the great content.
You are 100% correct Look original hardware is great, and I would love to own a lot more, but its so expensive, so instead I try to concentrate on replica controllers, cause that goes a long way to replicating the feel, and at the end of the day, its the software that counts!
I can safely say the majority of Saturn fans are not gatekeepers, and actually encourage emulation etc due to the high cost of the games. Like any fandom, there are always a few unkind people.
I have the same issue with certain members of a vintage hi-fi sub genre forum (I'm admin). Our moderation team (I'm the youngest in my mid '50's) and we do not tolerate such behaviour. I still play retro games on a PC emulator so I'd go down well on this FB group. I've learnt quite a bit on this channel about what went on in the background. I didn't care when these machines/games were new - I just played them and still do. My favourite games of all time are the Amiga version of Speedball 2 and PS2 version of SSX Tricky. For the last few years I've played them on an emulator. Do I still enjoy them? Of course I do. It's odd that Steam had a remake of Speedball2 on offer a few weeks ago for dirt cheap and it's fantastic. Burn me at the stake! Any hobby/pastime should be for any age group and what they find convenient/afford. It should be encouraged and they shouldn't be disparaged for not whanting the most authentic gear at a huge cost. Gaming is for everyone.
The biggest problem with roads is that those who are in a rush have to share them with folk who are not. Retro gaming is many things to many people, for some it's collecting, for some it's raspberry pi's, some it's just nostalgia. You should only be concerned with your own happiness and should not be concerned with how others get their happiness.
You're 100 percent correct. Just because there's hundreds of videos about Final Fantasy 6 out there, doesn't mean I would mind hundreds more about it from different personalities. I love seeing people's takes on it, whatever it is.
I love this video so much. You hit the nail on the head with regard to all the toxicity and gatekeeping! Personally, I’m 37 and grew up with or was at least exposed to most of the stuff you talk about….but… I certainly never knew much more than the superficial facts/details. You do an excellent job telling the STORY and giving details that I never knew! Keep up the good work and cheers to you standing up to bullies and jerks!!
The first 2 minutes really hits home. Youre right. I know a lot now about this stuff but I learned from videos like yours, and was able to learn quickly thank you
Thank you for this video, I had a similar experience posting a video of playing street fighter 2 with my kids on a retron 3. I didn't see rgt85's video but I'll watch it now. You're my go to for retro gaming btw. Thank you m'lady!
I'm not a boomer... I'm gen X... but still... I've been a big gamer since I was a kid. I grew up with an Atari 2600, ColecoVision, C64, NES, Sega, Amiga, etc. I enjoy playing these games to this day. When I hear of people in the younger generations enjoying these games, my thought is "Welcome aboard! I hope you enjoy!" I don't care what hardware they are playing on. I think gaming is something to be enjoyed by anyone. I don't play on an old CRT, even though that's what I played on back in the day. Heck, I actually started out playing on an old TV with an RF adapter. Nowadays I'm playing on my Steam Deck. I guess that's not very "old-school" to be old-school. Why all of the gatekeeping? It only pushes people away.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything related to this video in the retro communities I’m part of, but what I will say is that every fan community has these people somewhere. In my experience it’s best to ignore them!
I've been active in gaming for nearly 27 years by now and I must to say these attitudes are sooo embarrasing by far to many of us, because aren't we supposed to enjoy? That's nothing to do with the oldest hardware you can find: I'ts about passion and bringing joy doing something you love. Sharing it with youngers SHOULD be just fine. Regardless of conditions (or any dumb rule set by... who?) In this long time I have welcome every change, every innovation, every upgrade and because of that I don't think I'm making a sacrilege for playing Final Fantasy VII on Switch and with a flat screen TV. All that matters is that I can FINALLY play it. In the 90s I didn't have a PlayStation. Last for not least, youngsters can be amazing retrogamers like us. I personally know many of them.
Great video! I got into retro gaming when I was 7 or 8 (1997/98) and never in my life did I imagine that retro gaming would become a big deal. Then flash forward to 2006/2007 and its a phenomenon! All I can say is I couldn’t be happier that it has become so popular, I encourage every parent to let their kids play at least a handful of retro games, wether it’s on the actual hardware, game store download or a reproduction console. As long as they get to experience it in one way or another that’s what counts. And who knows they might get into the hobby themselves when they grow up. These Gatekeepers are just petty and miserable people.
There may be multiple videos covering topics about the same thing over and over again but honestly, I do find enjoyment in watching and hearing other people talk about things in their own voice with their own opinion; men and women alike... There's nothing wrong with that. And yes, there will always be someone who didn't know a super common thing about a thing and those who are like "Man, everyone knows this! Why are you talkin about it?", Not exactly. And that's why you and many other content creators who make videos like this come in to help. I appreciate you, RGT, and the countless others who make similar content that provide information of things we may or may not know about. So with all that said, Thank you all.
*High fives* and *round of applause* Mrs Decade. As a 50yr old male who grew up not only playing retro games but still loves them to this day, I couldn't agree more with your comments. The gatekeeping and elite-ism needs to stop. Bravo and keep up the great content my friend :)
Sometimes I already know about a topic, sometimes I don’t. Even if I do, I still think it’s nice to get another perspective on it. I almost always learn something new when I look at a topic from multiple perspectives. Your SMB minus world videos for example- I thought I already knew that topic, but you revealed a couple of points I never knew. These people need to relax and stop taking this so seriously. It’s supposed to be a fun hobby for anyone at any level.
I was about to say that I would have called them out but then again... I don't actually hang out in that many retro spaces. I mostly just do my own thing, exploring the landscape at my own pace. I seem to recall this attitude being prevalent when I was more active in this space. Maybe that's why I stopped?
i really appreciate your style, and come to your channel specifically for your delivery. The way you present things and say things evokes the tabloid/'lifestyles of the rich and famous' style of presenting that has long been associated with british media here in the states. keep it up and dont sweat the haters!
creater vs haters... this fight is as old as internet. i wish i could help you with that issue. maybe that can help if i say that i love watching your videos. take care, i really admire your spirit and your point of view. you're not a robot without emotion. you're an human. that makes a big difference between you and other people.
i haven't watched all of your videos but i thought your bayonetta video was fantastic. your presentation style, research, and delivery are great. didn't know you could catch so much heat from a video about the sega saturn!
@TE_LE GRAM ME OfficialLadyDecade I actually have two functional original Atari 2600 with a few games including pitfall. Every now and again I fire those baby's up and when our friend come over we play Frogger, pitfall, etc. To think, those were amazing games in those times. I loved the late 70s and 80s gaming. Hahaha!! My son works for Blizzard so I get to see the inner workings. It's amazing. Your videos help bring me back to my childhood. Back before I had to do this adulting thing. LOL.
I love your videos, I am a retro gamer and 50. Your doing a great job. What's your favorite retro console ? I have collected many , love the nostalgia of retro games so much fun. Have a good day.
So much would be better if people would remember the simple fact, games are meant to be fun, so let people have fun. Also I'm glad for people, like Lady Decade, uploading videos even if "nothing new was shared", because it can be new to me or someone new just by the nature of how TH-cam randomly recommends something. And if it's not new? Well maybe it's just refreshing old memories and that can be fun on it's own. Let videos be fun.
I've learned a few thing since I've subscribed recently. I love hearing about consoles and partnerships that never were, but may happened in an alternate dimension. Plus, you have brought something to the table: you've got a great personality. Lady Decade: A Necessity For Gracious Living.
Gaming, Retro or otherwise, is for everyone. Always was. Gatekeepers need to take a long hard look at themselves, their shiny retro hardware, then their lack of any friends and their stinking Karma. More power to the proud Dad. Also, thankyou for all of your videos. Every episode, even ones on subjects that I already know loads about, always present some facts that I was unaware of. It makes no difference what age you are, or whether or not you were there for launch. Your journalistic ability is always on point. :)
Me personally, I would prefer original hardware but I agree, at least there playing retro games. The fact that the younger generation is even INTERESTED in retro games is a plus. You keep making video just the way you are because they are all great!
My father has always been a gamer. But he is more focused on the modern graphics of the time rather than on the nostalgic ones at that time, so to speak. He had an MSX at the time and some others apparently. Nowadays we have a PC, because here in Brazil it is very expensive to have consoles. Besides that, we use it for other things, like school or taxes. And he doesn't do gatekeeping to anyone cuz of it. Just for reference he's in the middle of his 50's and i'm in the middle of my 20's. He is very interested in tech and gaming in general and pretty chill about it.
Hi Lady decade, 👋 thank you for you video, I agree with what you said. I'm a retro/vintage enthusiast and as a 2nd hobby a ham radio operator. Where we have the same problems, multiple by 5 since we have to stick to certain laws, which can sometimes be outdated. Hopefully the future retro community doesn't have the same problem a ham radio , where the people think of an old man in his 70s sitting in front of old desk being boring.
Everybody in every age and gender should be allowed to play retro games in the way they prefer. For people who didn't grew up in the 80th or 90th there is no need to buy the original hardware just for to try out some retro games.
Thanks for raising this issue, I didn't realise it was so prevalent. I've noticed that the Analogue Pocket subreddit sometimes is filled with some very toxic people and wasn't quite sure where the attitudes came from.
You know, part of what I like about your videos is that when you talk about stuff I know, my Asperger makes me feel at home bt being reminded of all this cool part of history. It's like watching your favourite film -- You know each line of dialogue, but you still love it. Also, it's not what you speak, but how do you speak -- I love your humour, your research and your hardworking efforts to share the history of this beautiful hobby. Not to mention, more often that not, I stil learn a couple of things here and there and I appreciate your content for that. I guess I'm not hardcore enough for the gatekeepers lol. Gatekeeping is kind of paradoxical. First they will tell you that only what they like is good and that only if you like the same stuff as they you have value. But then when you try to take their word and get into their likes, they will not allow you, because, as you put it, you were not there and therefore you're not a "real fan". Thus, it makes no sense. On the other side, and please don't shit on me... You know, I have to admit there was ONE time I was a gatekeeper myself. Back when Pokémon first came out in the west I was already a fan because of the anime, and by 1998 when the games came out, since I was already in middle school I was bullied for liking a kiddy game. And by bullied I mean I was beat up by other kids at school and some hard stuff that to this day still impacts my self steem. Then when Pokémon Go came out and it became cool among adults, I witnessed those very same bullies being addicted to PoGo, and I was like "What?! You bullied me back in the day for liking Pokémon! You made fun of me, humilliated me, stole my lunch so many times just because I liked Pokémon, and now all of a sudden you claim to be a big fan? You're a hypocrite. You DON'T DESERVE to call yourself a Pokémon fan!". I still feel uncomfortable from time to time, but I'm coming to terms with that under the idea that they grew up and learned to cherish that kiddy franchise free of prejudice. Although I never gatekept against new fans. I've always welcomed Pokéfans who joined the community through Go and I don't care if they were not even born when "the original 151" was the deal and whatnot. End of rant.
As usual, thoughtful points well made. I raised my kids to appreciate gaming both retro and contemporary. I have various consoles and a 2nd hand crt but also various emulators.
same probleme on tinder. you say hello and girl get mad "i received hundred of hello, be creative". people are blased (jaded?) of everythink. they consume so many media and culture, they all think they already know everything about everything, and they don't have any new lesson to learn from life.
I would LOVE to be able to play retro games on a CRT. I play retro games all the time, more than I play modern games, and I’m always finding more rare games from the past to try out. I’m a sucker for French Obscureware. Unfortunately I live in a one bedroom flat with a single living room. If I put a CRT in my living room next to my two monitors and flat screen tv and a normal person came in, they would probably turn around, walk straight out and call the police. Not to mention it would also mess with the room decoration and look absolutely hideous. To have a CRT these days you need a dedicated “retro” room to really enjoy it. And I can’t afford that. The best I can do is apply CRT overlays and a CRT-Royale shader. But even then I absolutely love how it looks!
Yeah, having a CRT is a privilege these days. I think it's always good if someone can play a game the "wrong" way over not playing it at all. If it wasn't for emulation, I wouldn't be able to afford to play old games.
@@xenos_n. Yeah, I mean the CRTs themselves are still relatively affordable. You can get a PVM from £129 upwards on eBay. But god forbid your wife sees you lugging that giant paperweight into the living room or the bedroom you both share. You’ll be handed the divorce papers before you can plug the damn thing in. What I’ve always dreamed of is a spare room away from the “normal” part of the house that I could furnish just like an 80’s or 90’s bedroom that my 10 year old self could have enjoyed. Kind of messy but with all the furniture, cool memorabilia and toys from back then. A CRT would look right at home there.
Great points! I started watching RGT85's vid when it came out, but didn't get past the intro. Felt like it was about politics of a community that I"m not really part of, so I moved on. Thank you for synopsizing what it was about and adding your take. Though they're different issues altogether, I feel like this is a good follow-on to your vid defending the use of emulators. Thanks again!
If I want to play an old game on a microwave, is my problem. Games are supposed to be fun, and a personal experience. There is not a right or wrong way to play.
A true retro gamer would be happy to share the experience with the younger generations. I always think it’s amazing when a younger person has an appreciation for a retro game even though they may not have the nostalgia associated with growing up with it!
Nice of you to talk about something like this and standing out for this guy and the shame he got I don't know everything about it but the fact you took a problem and talked about ways to oppose it was awesome but sadly these people will prevail but glad you shed some light on it
i run a solo board gaming channel myself and we have similar issues with gatekeeping in our community.... however its usually around playing digital versions of board games as opposed to the cardboard analogue... but the way i see it if my kid discovers board gaming through his tablet he more likely to want to join me at the table there is literally no downside to playing old games on new hardware. great video Stay Hexy!
Only a minute in and I have to agree, it's very sad that that dad was berated for getting his kids into retro games. While playing on a CRT is nice, most people who haven't kept theirs from back in the day will find it hard to get a good one. The newest ones are probably at least 15 years old at this point and shipping on them will be super expensive due to the weight.
Thank you for calling this out. I’ve seen this kind of behavior in other communities too (I’ve collected vinyl records for over a decade and the audiophile space has the same kind of gatekeepy attitude - don’t you dare use the wrong gear, but also don’t buy high-quality gear because casual people like you are inflating the prices, etc.) and it feels like there’s no winning with these folks besides not participating in the community at all. It’s so counterproductive. If we want the legacy of classic games or any other media to live on, we need to make efforts to welcome new people into the fold. I’ve learned a ton of new things from your channel and also appreciated hearing fresh retellings of stories that were already on my radar. Keep doing what you do 💪
Ya know. Even if I did know everything that is in one of your videos,.. your videos are still always wonderfully enjoyable! Sorry you have to deal with toxic people.
The gender thing was always a pain point for me growing up since it was seen as strange for girls to be huge gamers. Seeing that not be a thing nowadays, and seeing content creators as passionate as me over their niche of gaming that just happen to be girls, too, is such a delight for me personally.
many females i dated share this sentiment, its human nature to judge & difficult for most to overcome. i got tons of crap growing up being attractive & not fitting the "gamer" stereotype like if the guys lost to me they were worse than losing to a normal opponent or something 😅
HOLY SHIT
i hope he gets better, i wish him the best
I will, Milady. RGT 85 is an awesome mouthpiece.
most retro gaming is my laptop but "original" controlles... with emulators
i am just 42 old retro gamer even real retro machines, but it just easier to try some rare games and rare hardware with just emulators!!!
Oh no, I hope he's okay, will do, thanks.
I had to get away from original hardware due to increasing prices mostly, but honestly it shouldn't matter how you play the games, just have fun. Personally, I've gone the mini console route for the most part, I really enjoy the Sega and Nintendo classic minis especially.
It only matters how many sealed originals you have - nothing else matters.
@@witness1013
I nearly opened that cart today;
the game is ours, just not to play.
All these words I don't just say.
And nothing else matters.
The Everdrives have made that experience more affordable. :)

I play my retrogames from time to time and it makes me feel good. In my opinion, everybody can enjoy it despite the age. If people played games more often, the world would be a better place!
But even Osama Bin Laden played! :D
Hell no lol. Rage quitting and raging does exist especially in competitive games probably makes someone wants to go fight somebody.
@@a3970010 I absolutely agree with you. These gamers think that an "actual" gamer must have all consoles in an original state with original game cartridges, CDs, etc. and exact gamepads or joysticks. That is why social media sucks. It's not just retro games. There are idiots who will shame anything out there because they are miserable people.
Mid 50’s gamer here 😂 Happy to share my love of games with anyone else that loves them . Even my 10 year old niece who is just getting into games 😊
It's gaming. It's about the games. Sharing the games is all that matters.
100%
50% agree depends on what you trying to achieve in your point
I used to wake up when my dad came home from 3rd shift to play Super mario on NES. he taught me how to get 99 lives with a turtle shell on the stairs!
I have long been against generational divides / gate keeping and as I age, I try to listen to younger people and welcome them into my circles and fandoms.
no; shitpost back 🎉
if we brought back bullying we wouldnt have this issue
anyone in the wrong needs to be corrected publicly
this ends the liberal mind disease
I've seen some gatekeepers justify their stances, insisting that it's "necessary." Really dumb.
You there Gatekeeper, you are a blight
This isn't Gatekeeping though. The hobby is the same regardless of setup. This is like saying youur D&D group is gate kept because someone demands the use of a sharpie on the character sheets or something.
@@markcollins2704 Gatekeeping gatekeeping? Too meta for me.
Watching my children playing Bubble Bobble for hours is thanks to a free emulator, and we love it
Here's the secret to playing games properly. Ask yourself, 'am I having fun?' if the answer is yes - congratulations! You're doing it right.
Well if we are being completely honest there have been times over the decades where I was defiantly not having fun, but still enjoyed it anyway. >_
Jayz2cents does PC builds reviews, and Reviewtech, does controversy and news some reviews. but the rest are into retro gaming.
i think its great to see young Gen-Z people like you take an interest in things that were before your time - keep it up!
she surely isnt Gen-Z, is she? i thought she was in her 30s.
I’m sorry you go through this. Most every person in the retro gaming community are understanding and great people who show great joy for their games.
I ran a Facebook gaming page a few years ago , some people are cool but there's a nasty element too . Facebook is toxic so I left 👍
I am a game lover and collector and i am 61 years old. I agree with everything you said in this video. Keep up the great work
I'm 60 and can't believe how many people our age play games. It's awesome
Unfortunately, gatekeeping is a tale as old as humanity.
Lady Decade, a necessity for gracious living! Way to go!
You are 100% correct
Look original hardware is great, and I would love to own a lot more, but its so expensive, so instead I try to concentrate on replica controllers, cause that goes a long way to replicating the feel, and at the end of the day, its the software that counts!
I can safely say the majority of Saturn fans are not gatekeepers, and actually encourage emulation etc due to the high cost of the games. Like any fandom, there are always a few unkind people.
Odd. I'm part of a ColecoVision group and frequently mention my Flashback (not OG hardware) and no one seems to have an issue with it.
I retrogame using an emulator box. It’s less expensive and more convenient. It’s called a “Super Console X Pro”.
The problem, as always, is the gatekeeping.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen anything related to this video in the retro communities I’m part of, but what I will say is that every fan community has these people somewhere. In my experience it’s best to ignore them!
Brilliant as always! Sending good vibes from across the pond.
Regardless of conditions (or any dumb rule set by... who?)
In this long time I have welcome every change, every innovation, every upgrade and because of that I don't think I'm making a sacrilege for playing Final Fantasy VII on Switch and with a flat screen TV.
The problem are some hardcore game (system/pc) collectirs, any age.
You are amazing! You are one of my favorite TH-camrs! Thank you so much!

LOL.
I had the CRT goon squad come at me for playing PS2 on a modern tv. They are insufferable.
I love your videos, I am a retro gamer and 50. Your doing a great job. What's your favorite retro console ? I have collected many , love the nostalgia of retro games so much fun. Have a good day.
You are really Knowledgeable about all this retro stuff and I like your opinion on the subject
Thanks again for your perspective i love your videos Ladydecade and for keeping the memories of gaming from our childhood alive
As long as the kids are having fun it shouldn't be a problem.
I have a modded SNES Classic with 8 console game types in it.
Thanks! As Always. BTW, have you ever covered the PC-Engine/Turbografx-16? It was my favorite..
Thank you! And no not yet as it is one of the few well known pieces of hardware we don't own and we like to get shots of the physical hardware.
I really enjoyed this shoot from the hip and speak from the heart type of video! Spot on takes!
8:24 what are those controllers? Some sort of knob dial like in the arcade Tron?
I love your Videos ...They are fun and informative and i love your attitude... Please keep on Going Much Love
I've noticed that the Analogue Pocket subreddit sometimes is filled with some very toxic people and wasn't quite sure where the attitudes came from.
you're awesome and thank you for the content and being retro-normal ! have fun, learn a little history, and be kind :)
Thank you so much. Im trying to teach my children about retro games. Its the way to go❤
You know, part of what I like about your videos is that when you talk about stuff I know, my Asperger makes me feel at home bt being reminded of all this cool part of history.
Lady Decade, your videos take me back to my childhood and its great reminiscing. Keep up the amazing work!
This needs to be talked about more and thanks for the video.
Why? She said it was a small minority of people.
I'm old but I don't mind when young people are trying to get into stuff I used to be into. It's flattering
My mom always told me whether you’re doing good or bad people will always have something bad to say.
Fandom turned into obsessive nerddom in more than a few cases.
Keep doing what you do 💪
Intersting point of View ! Thank You Lady Decade !
Ya know. Even if I did know everything that is in one of your videos,.. your videos are still always wonderfully enjoyable! Sorry you have to deal with toxic people.
The gender thing was always a pain point for me growing up since it was seen as strange for girls to be huge gamers. Seeing that not be a thing nowadays, and seeing content creators as passionate as me over their niche of gaming that just happen to be girls, too, is such a delight for me personally.
many females i dated share this sentiment, its human nature to judge & difficult for most to overcome. i got tons of crap growing up being attractive & not fitting the "gamer" stereotype
like if the guys lost to me they were worse than losing to a normal opponent or something 😅
a moderately attractive musician? he must SUCK at vidya 🙄
