Much as I like the other sects more (especially in V5) I think the sabbat is probably the most versatile sect as they’ve rlly been portrayed in so many ways, there are things that remain the same of course, but lots of them have also changed since their introduction and it gives a lot of room for them to be moulded to a story, if you’re playing them then a more humanish organisation of zealots seems better for prolonged exposure, but if you’re not sabbat then perhaps it’s better to see them as the monsters of monsters they’ve been portrayed as before, they truly can go any which way the storyteller needs, more so than the other sects in my opinion

I was almost convinced there, for a moment only, that you were nothing more than a very skilled TH-camr explaining how to play a role-playing game. And in that bravo!
The horrible truth is that you ARE Clan Nosferatu and this is all part of an elaborate scheme to hide the fact of those that walk in the night.

my current version of the V5 black hand book story where the Sabbat attacks Alamut and supposedly diablirizes the old man of the mountain, my take on this is that Haqim is actually that massive pool of blood in Alamut where the Assamites put the blood paid for their services, and the Sabbat who survived the attack are actually taken over by Haqim so now the Assamite antedelluvian aims to control the Sabbat and use them as a weapon vs. the other antes.

The Norwich long running Sabbat Larp is setting back up on Halloween this year so I get to play the Bishop of Leeds again, yay!
    Palla Grandé here I come!
Our game has been running for a decade and a bit and it is hard to gather new players going hard into the religious aspects of the sect, but ibe been trying to portray Bishop Darren, conqueror of Leeds as the kind of zealot described in the video. He was, once, a conscientious objector during the Blitz and still has his white feather that he makes a point of coating red when he diablerizes as a symbol that his soul was always destined to be bloody no matter how he would have denied it. He rounded up the coterie of leeds and broke them to heel to the Sabbat, stripping their humanity with his Priest allies with dozens of rituals and games and lead them in sermons where he revealed probable truth to his flock and interspersed it with the propaganda.
It is an ongoing process and there is every chance they will turn on me at Palla Grandé or some other night, but it seems to be working...
I should check the abyss to see who is going to leed the revolt against me...

    Started in 93'.
I didn't care for the Camarilla or the Cammy-lite anarchs.
    Humanity 1-10 was horrible.
Then the Sabbat Players Guide & Storytellers Guide came out &
    WOW.I was in love.
    Obsessed,really.
I became the forever ST,except for one long game where we took turns.
I was a variation of my younger self,City Gangrel & became the pack priest, although, after many years,I became an Archbishop of Barovia Yugoslavia.
(A friend that played was a Country Gangrel named Bill, who wasn't a cop)
The pack was involved in the East Coast Crusade & my character converted many to the Sabbat (prior Barovia&becoming an Archbishop)
Most of the pack had the old version of the Path of Harmony(not the newer version & this was the Path I converted others to,mainly.
Although 5E is cool in it's on way, especially altering the Road of Humanity to being basically a concept, they ruined the Sabbat (in my opinion)
    No subsects.No factions.
All pack members are the same Path.
Clan wasn't important, but it still existed.
Certain clans acted simular, even if they followed different paths.
If I were to ever play/ST VTM again in 5E
    Homebrew
    Sabbat ONLY.
Unless it's the spy before the Crusade style (again).

  • @TheSalubri
    @TheSalubri ปีที่แล้ว +1

I had two Sabbat character concepts that I am about to play. First one is the warrior "Salubri Avenger" (a 15th century Hungarian knight who spent several hundred years in torpor, in order to avoid the rising power of Camarilla and who was recently awakened by Salubri of the Sabbat), the one who unleashes his ferocity upon Tremere (especially) and Camarilla (slaughtering, or diablerizing the kindred and kine who serve them without mercy, as he finds justification for his deeds in centuries-old desire for retribution), but rarely gives in to the beast and always trying to find a way to avoid unnecessary killing of innocents. Sheltered by the likes of Adonai, his usually sticks to his own kin in the sect, avoiding interaction with higher ups, especially if they are Lasombra, Tsimisce or (especially) Tremere. He is bound by an archaic "chivalric code" that hardly has a place in modern times (Sabbat as well), but he does his best not to lose a grip on it as he regards it as the most defining trait of his being (also, his views on the world are rather "obsolete" as he has difficulties to understand modern society and tech, especially because he was awakened relatively recently).

    • @TheSalubri
      @TheSalubri ปีที่แล้ว +1

The second guy though...well, he was a Spanish civil war propagandist, who eventually become a part of the secret police and hunted his opponents with fervor, never caring about collateral damage. He is actually a certified psychopath, who simply cannot process feelings of empathy and care, but is methodical thinker, very skilled in manipulation of others and acts like a true "Social Darwinist". Fun fact...he is a Toreador (surprise, not Lasombra), who was embraced by a Sabbat member who literally stole a rival Lasombra's future childe, out of spite. The conflict between his sire and the Lasombra vampire who was his rival ended up in our guy's favor, because he eventually betrayed his sire (who was relatively powerful, but impulsive and vain) to the Lasombra in exchange for favors within the sect. To the kine presents himself as an altruist and humanitarian, while in fact he is a despicable monster obsessed with gaining more power within the sect, and who knows that the more monstrous you present yourself to be, to better chance is to advance in the Sabbat's power ladder. For every private clinic that caters to homeless that he opened, a bunch of organ traders and blood slaves were hidden in its shadow. For every humanitarian aid that gathered money for, he would then cause the even worse disaster in the future and snatch the victims in its wake. Our toreador knows the power of propaganda (due to his past) and good PR, so he works hard on altering his public image in any way possible (among humans - kind and generous, among Sabbat - a monster without equal, dedicated to the sect.) His concept is "Deviant benefactor" and he even has its own small Elysium and bunch of humans who are enchanted by him, oblivious to his true nature, as his ability to "mimic" human emotions and behavior is second to none.

The first guy does belong in the Sabbat. Funnily enough most of the Humane and honorable clans and fraternities have membership in the Sabbat. All Paths incompatible with the path of humanity joined the Sabbat, Paths of Heaven and good Paths too. Brujah, and Banu Haqim two founders of the Sabbat are Humane. The Salubri are largely good, Lasombra have the most actual Christians too
Not to mention the Sabbat is the only Sect who takes hunting Infernalists and hellspawn seriously.

Wanna know an interesting way to do Sabbat characters? Play a former Revenant. Yeah the decent into madness is great storytelling, but…what would it be like to play a character that was never fully human? It’s a lot like playing a Lupus in Werewolf. You have to explore alien moralities, find out what it’s like being born in the service of animals like the Sabbat.
Take my Bratovitch boi. He was never human, not even close. He was an attack dog doing an impression of a man, and he was a pack animal. He didn’t even need the rites to be willing to die for his packmates. The Sabbat were his God, and everyone else was a potential meal until they saw the light.

This was insightful and sparks my continued interest in molding something of my own for a Sabbat character, if not a plot or narrative. I find them somehow more fascinating by being both the most bestial and yet the most organized of sects, their structure and system seems more intriguing... makes me wonder how playing a session or video game with them in the player's hands could go. morbid? likely, dark, most definitely exciting, hopefully so.

When it comes to the Sabbat I am rather fond of the Sept when they are played properly. When making Sabbat characters I avoid going the bloodthirsty murder hobo route (because that is boring). Those bloodthirsty murder hobos are just the canon fodder and aren't true Sabbat. With Sabbat characters I tend to go the ruthless religious fanatic route. I view the Sabbat akin to a Vampiric Al Qaeda. They have driving goals and reasons for what they do not just murder for murders sake. If my Sabbat characters meet a fellow Sabbat that does torture mortals for their own amusement their response is "Immature child" while their personal stance on mortals is "I enjoyed my meal very much thank you". Like they're still monsters but they can at least show some degree of class. Hell that is mentality I would go with when playing a Tzimisce.

Thanks for the compliment, I really appreciate that!
As for your question, I believe that V5 captures the battle between the Beast & Humanity much better than other systems, similar to willpower (check out my V5 review for more insightful explanations).
And more simpler, the newer fans are playing this more than other versions, if that is something that interests you.
Other than that, it really depends on what you and your players feel most happy with. It is quite easy to pull the metaplot into V20, for example.

Sabbat are the closest to being the Good faction. Tldr: The Sabbat is a collection of allied beliefs that fight for dominion and evolve but never entirely. The Cam are a amoral survival and power focused faction. Hence more extremely evil and extremely Good vampires will go Sabbat

as of 2023, the Sabbat has become a lot less centrally organized and very disorganized. gone is the Sabbat governance structures and now the pack rules, might makes right. So a former Archbishop who goes to a sabbat area and demands obedience may well be challenged to mono combat rites to prove his worthiness or killed outright.

Not strictly speaking true, the book gives us the info with intent on using them as antagonists, but they give you all the info you can use to just make a sabbat PC too. After all the paths of enlightenment are there and all the info on their structure as far as we know. It kinda got amped up in the public view that way but it’s highly unlikely we won’t be able to easily adapt the material we have to a PC vampire.

I use V5 for STing a Sabbat Campaign. Their free book was helpful. I had to house rule a few things things (like certain disciplines not listed in V5) to make it work. As well as pretty much take a few things and basically shake up politics for the area I was setting (because there is next to no data about it).

Justin Achilli stated on the WOD interview on the V5 sabbat book that everything you need to play a Sabbat character is in the book and he is sure that many will get the book with the intent to jump straight into a sabbat game and that's great.
Even in past editions Sabbat have typically been antagonists. Even main characters can be antagonists in a story.
