You can also use half-beams for the piston rods to save parts, and I find using sticks with grabbers and mini guns and 1m snap pins works well for making eccentric cranks.
If I wanted an internal cylinder system, I’d use those triangular Technic pieces for the frames and the half-beam driving rods

Excellent video! Thank you for all the ideas! Here's a tip from me: the way that real engines' valve gears never jam is through what's called "quartering". This method puts one side's valve gear 90 degrees ahead or behind the other. It runs beautifully and never jams! I've never had to use gears. Just thought I'd let you know! Happy new year!

You could easily make it a 2-6-0, just add another wheel and maybe use more gears. I'd also use L wheels rather than XL. The block isn't that hard, just copy what I have used there, and fill in the plank spaces with two extra cams.

    Brilliantly done.
I can’t help but think though, after seeing the “Tight fits” example, with the technic half beams as side rods. Might it be feasible to do a more realistic Walschaerts valve gear with another small half beam? I admittedly don’t know if there’s something like a 2m Cross and hole half Beam to act as the eccentric.
Though now I’m wondering if trying to make motion out of official pieces wouldn’t just make it stick out to far.
Either way, best of luck on your current and future builds!
