A lot of those college basketball games with low attendance numbers were neutral site games and it happened to be on the week of Thanksgiving with games in places like Palm Springs CA, Fort Myers FL and Nassau, Bahamas.
That doesn’t explain the low attendance at home. I’ll concede the neutral sites during the thanksgiving break nobody should expect a big crowd against d3 schools. The highest attended home game was (no surprise) against Notre Dame and that was about 7-8k. That arena holds 10k at least.

Great update. Thank you for talking Kentucky. I am a new fan to women’s basketball. (Brought into the fandom by way of Caitlin Clark Iowa vs LouisvilleI elite 8 2023) been a men’s college basketball fan since the 80’s and going to games and cheering on my men’s Kentucky Wildcats whenever I can. This year I started going to Kentucky women’s basketball games. People are missing out if they aren’t attending. I plan on getting season tickets next year!
They think that their college 'star' players are like Caitlin Clark. Tip: they aren't. CC is generational. None of the college players look generational at the moment.
@@csr2120 You must not really be watching, or only see what you expect to see, the soph guard for USC ,JuJu walkins is breaking records of CC already, clearly the best women college player and may be the best woman player on the planet, she remind me of Cheryl Miller, the best to ever play.
Also these pseudo-microtournaments are also often sometimes played in hotel ballrooms which in some cases only seat 500-1500 people (especially in the case of the ladies) the purpose for taking these extra games is to boost their RPI, also when you play in more games it gives you more wins or if your a mid level program another opportunity for an upset and to test your team against better competition than you might face in conference. I really want to see them get off the crap streaming networks like Flo that want 30 bucks for a single month. They need to get them onto at least ESPN+ or maybe Amazon to get Amazon into college basketball. Also you got to be die hard to leave he states during the holidays, and these games are often up against College Football for the next month so traveling becomes an even bigger issue if you a fan that likes to also attend your school football games.
The UConn men's basketball team went to Hawaii for the Maui Classic and lost all 3 games they played there. I think that traveling to Hawaii was a factor, not the long flight and jet lag, but being in Hawaii and enjoying the Aloha state.
I guess the other teams were from Hawaii. UConn has a lot of new players and they will need to improve a lot or they will lose a lot until they get to conference.

@@jessicaputnam1450Ya’ll don’t get it. It’s not the medias job to promote the games. The games need to be interesting enough to draw viewers. So far they’re not.
I'm an Iowa fan. Lucy Olsen tripped and fell off the elevated court and cut her knee, requiring a bunch of stitches and didn't play against Rhode Island or Byu in Cancun. We are in trouble if she ever gets hurt! We have no experienced ball handlers when she is out!
Even with Lucy in, I have a feeling we might start to see the limits of this squad against a difficult SEC team like Tennessee. Addison O’Grady has a cool layup and a jump shot, but she sometimes looks like she might be too sluggish to keep up against more athletically gifted players. Maybe they will have to use Ava Heiden instead.
They need to clean up the turnovers but they got it together a little more against BYU, at least. Hannah and Addi have been consistent. The freshman are young and it shows, but LOVE their energy/confidence and we should get better as the season goes on!
Also on December 17, the Basketball Hall of Fame Women's Showcase at the Mohegan Sun Arena where LSU plays Seton Hall and UConn against Iowa State. The WNBA returns to Boston on July 15 when the Connecticut Sun plays the Indiana Fever, Caitlin Clark's debut in Boston.
I covered both Duke games in Las Vegas (My current home). Duke was excellent. Their passing and defense were unbelievable. 38 assists on 40 field goals was insane. You can see me Courtside for much of the Duke/Oklahoma game. One of the best college games I've ever seen. Raegan Richardson is making a push for an All-American selection. Ashlon Jackson dropping 30 was huge in the K-State game. They were down 0-11 early, but made a huge run. Great week for Duke.
The Great Alaska Shootout was a premier college men's basketball showcase. That and the Maui Invitational Classic were my go-tos as a college BB fan. The Carrier Classic up in Syracuse (in December 1977) was my one and only chance to see this kid named Erving Johnson. Needless to say, he was the MVP of the four-team tournament, even though host team SU won the classic.
Agree on Feast Week. Iowa State fans would show up. In fact we have moved our Thanksgiving get together in the past to align with traveling family members to be able to go to an Iowa State game while visiting. I do think that having the opportunity to play South Carolina (even though we lost badly) was a great opportunity to play against top-level players early in the season, so I like that aspect of it. Thanks for great content Quita!
It is tough to need to fly to the Bahamas or Maui or Cancun during a major holiday with family week. I’m not surprised that there’s not a ton of people there, if they were in major cities, I’ll bet that they would get attendance, especially if they were nearor anywhere close to where the teams play. I know Mohican son last year had a doubleheader that was sold out for a long time, but it was not Thanksgiving’s
One thing I can say about feast week is that I was forced to search up some radio feeds and listen to some of the games. I have to say it was fun listening to those radio announcers. TV announcers have gotten lazy IMO, and they just want to chit chat about stuff that I could care less about. Sometimes the TV announcers even stop calling the games during some good basketball. Maybe in the future I'll start watching games sound off and listen to the local radio feed. Like I do when Quita is calling a WNBA game. Thanks, Quita for all you do. Much Love from Kentucky. Go Cats!!!
I would LOVE to see accessible TV coverage for women’s sports across the board. I ended up watching Iowa’s game the day after due to accessibility issues. It seems that you have to subscribe to several pay channels to have an opportunity to watch women’s sports. When they were building the NBA, PGA, MLB and NFL they had network coverage
I blame the media. The media is so desperate to crown someone/anyone the next Caitlin Clark of WCBB & that has only made diehard CC fans more entrenched & invested in proving them wrong. As Regina George so famously put it, the media just needs to "stop trying to make fetch happen!" If the media stopped pushing a few players & would give all the teams the exposure they deserve, the fans will naturally find & gravitate to players & teams they like. CC's popularity was very organic. The media really only gave her attention when she was too big for them to ignore. If anything the media downplayed CC & her abilities, because she was at Iowa & they have a tendency to only push stacked teams & players on those stacked teams. The media often miss the fact that many fans love to root for the underdogs or the diamonds in the rough. The media needs to stop putting so much pressure on a few young players to be the next big thing. Will any one college player have the same level of popularity Caitlin Clark had anytime soon? Most likely no. But I don't think that is a bad thing. There are a lot of talented young women in the NCAA right now, so there is nothing wrong with the college fandom distributing their support among several players & teams.
What's good about this site, Has anyone heard of Clara Strack yet outside of KY and the teams they played? you'd never think it listening to all the ESPN hack going off on say Juju. Come here to hear about these players if you really want to stay in tune with what's going on across the country.
Why not have some of these tournaments near Philly, NYC, DC? Try to build it with high school kids, locals, etc. Make them holiday tournaments but not so far away.
I hate this tournament week. The LSU games required an additional pay for view to watch live! It was at a high school stadium in the Bahamas and the stadium was empty. I’m so done with all these pay for view!
You are missing one of the points. Sure, the Alaska Shootout and the Maui Classic began as a workaround to schedule a few more games outside the lower 48 states, but they also exist as a "preseason" showcase for locales that don't normally get to see such high level sports. You need to let people living in places outside where the big programs exist get a chance to see the games in person. There are a great many folks in the country who don't live close to a major university that has big-time athletics. Still, they should be able to see a game once in a while. These are not conference games. The big programs will have plenty of time to get up to speed.
I could have easily gone to the one in Ft. Myers but u completely forgot until I turned on TV and saw the game. I was planning on going but The day prior I was traveling all day.
yeah i have seen people use those number to dunk on women basketball, i stop listening to those people, i don't like the gatekeeping by the old guard but some of the new media making everything about caitlin clark vs everybody is getting tired also
The problem is the media are too desperate to crown the next Caitlin Clark & CC's die hard fans are too desperate to prove the media wrong. Both sides need to stop comparing these college players to Caitlin Clark & realize it is OK that no one college player is as popular as Clark. The fans will find new players they like & want to support. And it is not a bad thing if that fandom is smaller but spread among many more players in the future.
Thanksgiving is a very expensive time to travel. I just don’t see many Americans going to tropical places over this holiday to do a basketball tournament. Much easier to watch from home but then you need to buy another subscription. Good news is the players get a vacation and might be less pressure to play in a gym with more attendance on a neutral territory. It would be interesting to get a rotation on these tournaments and would LOVE to see Iowa in the mix. We should show up, no doubt! I think the poll this week seems appropriate. Glad to see Iowa in the Top 20. I’d like to see Utah get in there! Loved seeing the upset against ND! Looking forward to them playing Texas this week! Should be a good challenge for both teams. I got Texas tho 🧡🤍
There are too many of these things right now and there is no promotion or easy TV access. @@QuitaLovesSports Agree! UConn fans travel well when the men or women's BB team plays a game in New York City at either Madison Square Garden, Barclays Center or even the UBS Arena on Long Island, the site of the 2024 WNBA Commissioner's Cup Final between the Liberty and Lynx. As for the WCBA (Women's Chinese Basketball Association), Chennedy Carter went off for 35 points in Wuhan's 79-72 win of Heilongjiang on December 1.
@@QuitaLovesSports Yeah but it will be very very cold there. I think the players & their families probably love getting to travel to a warm locale in late November.
You made some good points. However, you missed the most important one in my opinion and that is the cost. I was looking to attend UConn last year in the Bahamas, but the cost was crazy. Could I afford it? Yes. But rather go to Europe for a week. Even Paige said in a post game interview about her parents attending? She said “They can’t afford it. Everything is too expensive down here”.
I think the low attendance numbers are because of poor marketing/advertising and the timing (Thanksgivings week). I saw men's game that had low attendance as well.
Hello, Quita I love your intro to the show. I wish it was longer. Anyway I know Iowa will be different because of no CC but I love the fact they are 8-0. Let's go, Hawkeyes. Another thing, Quita I know this is way too early but have you heard about the number one girls high school basketball recruit in the nation, Aliyah Chavez, who is a phenom and is Mexican American? She averaged 37 points as a junior and 35 as a senior. I'm so excited to see her and I think she might go to Texas. Have a great day.
Unfortunately Chavez is too money motivated. While it’s good athletes are getting paid with the level of exposure, she turned down LSU for money and between the marketing LSU put behind Flajae, Reese, gymnasts Livvy Dun in NIL I don’t think she’ll ever be satisfied playing less NIL driven schools.
Go Gamecocks! You know we just beat our arch enemy Clemson on the football field. AND the women came out for blood after their loss. They needed that loss. I'm a mid 50s guy and I don't watch men's ball any more. I find women's ball just has more fire. My male buddies gave me a bunch of smack at first. Now they watch the big women's games. Keep up the awesome work. Love your reporting more than any other outlet.
Empty Seats at these venues means basically ZERO. It's all about expanding the BRAND of Women's basketball and that is DONE via the internet and the vast number of streaming services, not the venues themselves. It's a NON issue at this point. Those stating otherwise really are NOT basketball FANS.
@26:49 - What about a [stronger / more effective] marketing campaign(s), respectively, for the local communities that the Feast Week games concern? 🤔 S/O to Mr. President! 🐕
They need to start having tournaments in major US cities during feast week. People wkuld attend! The NCAA needs to also give automatic bids to the tournament (to force top teams to play each game ther early in season)
I get the idea of using automatic entry into the tournament to entice teams to play each other, but the problem is that it is those top teams who always make it to the tournament that we would want to see playing each other. So I don't see how an automatic entry into the tournament would entice those teams to play more games against each other early in the year.
There are quite a few people doing in this comment section. Despite what you said in the video, they couldn’t miss an opportunity to say: See no one cares about anyone but Caitlin Clark! See!! 🙄😭🤣 Lawd.
If you want to see the game grow, they should continue. So what if attendance is low and who cares about people that want to clown the game?. Let them. If you take these games to popular places, it will have attendance but the game will not grow beyond those places you mentioned. And you want to ruin the vacations to the players and their families. :)
It's not marketing, it's style of play. The womens game is too 1 on 1 centric, not enough movement and passing. They need to lower the net 18 inches (same as volleyball) so that passes to the inside can result in higher percentage shots, not just dunks.
I agree having these tournament weeks where the big schools are and good fan base. I beleive they try to set these women up to fail to push the negative and false narratives. Good job Quita.
I don't think they are meant to bring in large crowds based on the locations & facilities they play in, but I do think some of these games need to be nationally televised. But then maybe the location & facilities they choose to play in limits the ability to produce quality TV too.
@amyk6319 True because I didn't know USC and Notre Dame was playing so soon and on peacock I had to search it. They need to market these teams and women.
I feel what you’re saying but the league shouldn’t make decisions based on individuals clowning wbb. They’re gonna do that regardless if they want to 21:39
I say this as a CC fan myself, both the media & CC fans need to stop with the comparisons. Let these players just play their game & stop trying to make them the next big thing or compare them to CC. There are lots of great players in women's college basketball right now & it is OK for there to be several players & teams whose fandoms are smaller than CC's, but still add up to a continued large amount of fans supporting women's college basketball overall. If the media would promote all of the women's college basketball teams instead of only pushing a few, fans will discover new players they like & choose to support them. Many fans often don't like being told who to support, they instead like feeling of finding a new players themselves. There is often this sense of pride at "discovering" a new young player or following them before they became really popular.
I've seen a certain delusional fan base blame the fact that a certain woman is no longer playing college basketball for the low attendance. I won't say the woman's name but her initials are Caitlin Clark. LOL
They should honestly stop doing these bahamas, hawaii etc tournaments. Its clear the locals dont support it and show up. now if you had these games somewhere like England, Italy, Spain etc they would likely be packed out 💯
Quita, numbers may be low because of the family tradition of Thanksgiving. I don't need to rehash Thanksgiving family traditions for you. It's a bad time to hold an insignificant bb tournament in an insignificant women's bb location. Your idea to hold these things, if you're going to hold them anyway, in proven women's bb Meccas is valid. I mean even Greenville, SC, where the SEC tournament is often held, and other neutral, but proven locations of fan interest would be more feasible than the setup the way it is now.
It’s football season…the NBA can’t even get viewers/fan until the season ends…MTE is like the in-season tournament or Cup as they call it now. Nobody cares about it 😂
Feast week slow anyways bc college kids go home for the holidays. These games always going to be lower than a regular one. Let them kids enjoy a paid vacation.
I'm sorry, but Flo Hoops' streaming service sucks. I tried watching some of the games on there, and it kept lagging, skipping, and the volume sucked badly on there. I canceled my subscription right after that.

It’s a holiday week people have plans!!!’
APOTI IN THE HOUSE
I saw Iowa vs Kentucky and Iowa won that game !
135 people in attendance my local high school draws bigger crowds
Empty Seats at these venues means basically ZERO. It's all about expanding the BRAND of Women's basketball and that is DONE via the internet and the vast number of streaming services, not the venues themselves. It's a NON issue at this point. Those stating otherwise really are NOT basketball FANS.
Nobody beats Big Ellie 🗽 and the Aces were cute. Lynx stay salty 😂 oh well.
I feel like georgia tech should be ranked they are hooping right now
@26:49 - What about a [stronger / more effective] marketing campaign(s), respectively, for the local communities that the Feast Week games concern? 🤔
S/O to Mr. President! 🐕
Nice intro.
How 'bout we let college BB athletes actually spend Thanksgiving at home with their families. Whoa, you say.
The new intro is great! But I wish the cords didn't go across your face.
I’m guessing these are more like hard-core scrimmages practice games for the teams I’m just guessing
There are quite a few people doing in this comment section. Despite what you said in the video, they couldn’t miss an opportunity to say: See no one cares about anyone but Caitlin Clark! See!!
🙄😭🤣 Lawd.
The storylines aren’t the same, no drama
See that is where we differ. The drama of the WNBA is my least favorite part. I just want to see good basketball.
135 people wanted to caddy for CC22!
Do them in LA, Vegas or NY. Not Hawaii
I feel what you’re saying but the league shouldn’t make decisions based on individuals clowning wbb. They’re gonna do that regardless if they want to 21:39
I think it's good for the players to get away to bond play ball. Do things together, then get back to business.
Simple, CC raised the bar to impossible height for players to achieve. Solution: Someone, please break CC’s records!🤔😂🤣
There is often this sense of pride at "discovering" a new young player or following them before they became really popular.
it’s about a chance to take a break in a warm climate like you said the players and their families have fun. Can you say fall break?
quita go live again sometime soon
I've seen a certain delusional fan base blame the fact that a certain woman is no longer playing college basketball for the low attendance. I won't say the woman's name but her initials are Caitlin Clark. LOL
100% true. Players got no motion now. Numbers don't lie.
So, this early last season, all the college women's basketball games were sold out during this time?
@@roee78 More than this year's attendance fosho.
They will likely continue saying it even after she’s retired in 20 years. They seriously want every other woman/young girl to fail. It’s crazy.
@@leiannb.wrytes8893 Here we go 😂😂😂
Quita is there a salary cap after December 2024 since WNBAP opt out?
Yes
what if they gave free tickets to pack games?
Quita... Maddie is Better than Raven in the open court. Ijs
AND DAWN KNOWS IT😉
MADDIE IS ITCHING TO TAKE OVER THE TEAM.
You cannot teach height 😄
They should honestly stop doing these bahamas, hawaii etc tournaments. Its clear the locals dont support it and show up. now if you had these games somewhere like England, Italy, Spain etc they would likely be packed out 💯
Iowa is going to save Sports women basketball
Quita, numbers may be low because of the family tradition of Thanksgiving. I don't need to rehash Thanksgiving family traditions for you. It's a bad time to hold an insignificant bb tournament in an insignificant women's bb location. Your idea to hold these things, if you're going to hold them anyway, in proven women's bb Meccas is valid. I mean even Greenville, SC, where the SEC tournament is often held, and other neutral, but proven locations of fan interest would be more feasible than the setup the way it is now.
Since she's not acknowledging Thanksgiving maybe you do need to rehash it for her.
Jackrabbits? Shouldn’t SDSU be Jill-rabbits?
It’s football season…the NBA can’t even get viewers/fan until the season ends…MTE is like the in-season tournament or Cup as they call it now. Nobody cares about it 😂
Feast week slow anyways bc college kids go home for the holidays. These games always going to be lower than a regular one. Let them kids enjoy a paid vacation.
I'm sorry, but Flo Hoops' streaming service sucks. I tried watching some of the games on there, and it kept lagging, skipping, and the volume sucked badly on there. I canceled my subscription right after that.
You started out giving the history, how it's a NCAA thing, and then you went on to ignore the NCAA rules!
How?
Well sc fans show up!!
Yeah right look at she's balling huh Kentucky got some ballers huh
NFL is only one day a week and one game two days a week nfl doesn't really compete with other sports except on Sundays
